hey all going to Drexel!!!!

wanted to say wusup to all of you going to Philly and congrats!!
IT's soo awesome that we all got the opportunity to go to Drexel!..

i thought it'd be cool to get to know some of ya before school starts so that it'll be a blazing good time. Also if any of you are looking for room mates or anything let me know...coo?

my name is Amiethab, my nickname is Tubs just for ur own info

take care

tubs:clap:

Yippee tubs!! Are you going to go IFM or PIL? Where are you going to live? I have this cat that I would like to keep while I am in school... so I need a pet friendly apartment/roomies?

Cool thread! Hopefully lola and mgw519 get added to it.

i want to go PIL.....sounds pretty tight, and more hands on in terms of getting to do diagnoses and stuff.

gotta get that application in ASAP....

where are ya from?

where have you been tubs!? haven't talked with you in soooo long...

yipee! I need to get mine out too.

Hi!!

I'm gonna be at Drexel this fall too! I'm really excited, and was definitely surprised and impressed by the school (like everyone else, i guess). I was interested in the PIL curriculum too, but haven't gotten the application yet. how long did it take to get to you after you sent in your deposit?

I'm pretty nervous about moving all the way across the country - my kitty is TOTALLY crazy! and i don't think she'll appreciate travelling. 🙁 oh well, she'll have to deal. have you guys checked out the housing section of the drexel website?? it's got some nice sounding places. they sound VERY cheap to me, but right now I'm living in San Francisco so maybe i'm a little jaded 😉.

I really hope everyone waiting on the other Drexel thread hears some good news soon so they can join this thread!!

🙂

Hey all-

It's kind of freakin me out to see my future classmates on here...guess it makes it seem like it's really coming up soon, which it is! I'm really excited for PIL!! I can't remember when I got the application stuff for it, but it wasn't long after the deposit.

For those of you that haven't spent much time in Philly, don't worry about it...it's got a much worse reputation than I think it deserves. I've lived here for about a year now, and really like it... and I'm from the sticks in Montana.

Hope everyone enjoys their last few months of free time.

Bob

yah i gotta get that damn PIL app in...

like we should totally go out and chill once we're all in Philly (unless by sum miracle i get a USC interview and get in)....when are you guys gonna start moving out there and stuff.

Pwrpf....ur in SF? that's tiiight, i'm out in Berkeley, aka Bezerkeley. hahahahah.

i wanna get a huge apartment or house or something....and have lots of after hour parties 😉...........gotta take a break from all of that studying you know...hehehe

tubs

ps how old are all of yall....i'm 22, but will be 23 once school starts.

21, 22 a couple of months into school. When does PIL start? Is the academic calender going to be pretty similar to last years? I got my PIL application with my acceptance letter.

Orientation starts around July 30th, and the clinical practicum takes us into June a bit, I think. It's going to be a long year 🙂

hey all. I'm "cross-posting", i think (so don't tell on me🙂), but i think you could be interested.

i'm an incoming first-year at Drexel Med, PIL, looking for a house or 2bedroom appt to share with someone near drexel u. college of med. i have no leads on a place yet. do you?

i have a friendly dog (a lab), so i'm looking for pet friendly housing.

with regard to what type of housemate i'm looking for, i seek the easy-going, good-hearted tyepes.

as for me, i like to cook (spicy, meat, veggie, vegan, whatever), i'm outdoorsy, my ladyfriend is moving to phili in december (will share room), i keep late hours at times but am trying to cut back, i make art, and i'm originally from NH.

i'm looking to move to phili in mid july, but could pay rent before that if the situation was good.

email me if you have any interest in sharing a place.

[email protected]

Quick question:
Has anyone heard anything(other than from PIL or the like) post-acceptance? Financial info, registration stuff etc? For some reason the lack of mail is unnerving.

Thanks,

Bob

you got it with your acceptance?? awww, maybe they've already decided i'm not PIL material, sniff sniff. I moved up to San Fran from San Diego right after sending in my deposit, so maybe my app got lost in the mail. 😉 I'll give them a call to see what's up. The only piece of correspondence i've gotten was a confirmation of my deposit and a reminder to fill out the fafsa (that's the only thing they want for Financial aid, right?).

ucb - i'm in the exact same situation as you. i'm 99% sure i'll be at drexel unless my some miracle usc invites me for an interview...and then accepts me (at this point, i think that's probably not too likely).

I feel like an old lady compared to you guys! i'm 24 will be 25 a few months into school. luckily, i still have the mentality of an 21 year old, so i'm sure we'll be alright. 😀

Hi. I'm also in the 99% sure boat.

I received my PIL application with my acceptance at the end of January. I didn't apply though, I'm doing IFM.

Also, since submitting my deposit the only thing I have gotten is a confirmation letter stating that my deposit has been received. No further information about registration/orientation or financial aid. I'm not worried though, these things take time.

does anyone know if there is a deadline for PIL? like if you end up getting into drexel off the waitlist is it impossible to get into PIL?

hey all. count me in that 99%-sure-drexel-bound category too. i'm 22 and i'll turn 23 shortly after school starts. i'm surprised at how many people want to do pil - i think that's great, it's just not for me. i still have my application for it if anyone wants me to mail it to him/her.

pwrpf and tubs - i'm from los gatos (near san jose). i almost went to ucb but then decided on ucd at the last minute. philly will be a little different than nor-cal, but i thought it was tight when i visited.

tubs- i like your work hard/play hard mentality. i think we'll get along just fine 😉

first and foremost, congratulations to everybody who has made it into drexel! i am so happy for you guys!

i hope you don't mind my barging into your thread to ask for interview tips. i have my interview at drexel coming up and am getting kinda nervous . . . any advice on how can i can "ace" my interviews there? i thought it'd be best to get tips from the pros who actually made it in. thanks soooo much and MAYBE i'll see you guys next year. 😎

hey everyone! i just wanted to welcome you all to drexel. i really love it here! enjoy your summer and i will see you all in august (i'll be on the welcoming committee for orientation). feel free to PM me if you have any questions. 🙂

So I just called the admissions office and they faxed me a copy of the PIL application.

Lola - there's nothing on the app. about a deadline, and i remember my student interviewer saying hardly anyone is turned away from PIL. she said the application is basically to make sure you are aware of what you are getting yourself into with PIL. I bet that as long as you are accepted before the classes start, you don't have anything to worry about. (Of course, hopefully you'll be accepted any day now, and then this will be a moot point!! 😉)

Buttercup - I don't really have any advice for you - my interview was pretty relaxed and conversational. I'd say just be yourself and make sure you show them you are excited about the school and medicine in general. Keep in mind that the student interview does count for something, so don't just blow it off. My student interviewer was soooo cool, and from what i've heard, that's a pretty common situation. Good luck!
🙂

Hey so far I am heading off to Drexel and I too live in the bay area, Fremont. Crazy coincidence that we all live so close together. Maybe Drexel loves Northern California.

you know, it would be even weirder if lola and i both ended up there too. we're both in san francisco. 😛

Congrats to everyone!
Sounds like another large CA class.
25, living in Los Angeles, grew up in Pennsylvania. I'm also looking for easy-going roommates and housing near the school.

Happy 1st post, GolanT!

hey guys....

hahah we should all just live together.....phatty house. It'd be like "real world" minus the cameras....hahaha. Anyways...

oh ya....i'm a guy just so you all know. I dunno, i just thought i'd put that out there.

anyone down to get a house together?? whatever works (and saves money) and whatever lets people study hard and party hard 😉....Doc2Bee, you feelin me on dis?

my SN is ucbdancn007 on AIM if you guys wanna holla at me.....we might as well start chatting, we're gonna be buds in a few months 🙂

yah i tsucks not to get any mail....but they said that we would get stuff within the next couple of weeks to month. hope that helps.

Buttercup....relax and have fun with it. don't be uptight....just be urself and u'll be fine.

take it easy....pace

I am very excited. I have a very nice active dog that I thought I was going to have to leave at home, but maybe I can find someone on here that would like to get a place to share where we can keep them. I also have a cat.

I am sending out the PIL app tomorrow. I am really excited about class starting up.

I got into Drexel too.. but I'm still waiting on three CA schools. (UCLA, Drew, Davis) If I do end up at Drexel, we'll all be classmates! I think I'm going with IFM, just cuz I think for the amount of info we need to know PIL won't cover everything. Also, I'm too lazy to fill out the app. 😉 my aim sn is chibihamsta if you want to IM me. I'm kinda worried about winters in Philly.. it was so cold during my interview! How are all you CA people gonna get your stuff to Philly? I'm thinking of getting a UHAUL and drive across country.. my bf's going to law school in Michigan so i'm gonna drop him off along the way. =)

Hey SDNers, I also wanted to extend my congratulations on Drexel. I'm sure you'll have a great orientation now that CityIvy is involved.

Regarding housing questions:

1. There are a number of large apartment housing complexes within walking distance of school. The majority of first-years live in School Lane House or Alden Park (pricier, a little nicer). A little further off campus is The Empyrian (spelling?) which I've heard is not bad either.

2. For those opposed to having too many neighbors, there are a number of houses along Fox Lane/Queen Lane with smaller apartment complexes (The Charlwin is one). These are literally across the street from school.

3. Indian Queen Lane/East Falls. IQL hosts a number of large freestanding homes that make for cheap non-apartment alternatives. Definitely plan on getting a group of 3 or 4 together for this. It's a short drive to campus (5 min) and a safe neighborhood.

4. Manayunk
Manyunk, where I live, is crowded on the weekends with 20-something year olds heading out to Club Chemistry or the restaurants that line Main St.. Parking can be a hassle but you'll have the joy of knowing your dining options are just down the hill. The commute is 5-10 min. Rent can be high if you want to live directly on main (but definitely not S.F. prices)

5. Chestnut Hill.
Becoming very cute. Cobblestone streets and a plethora of good bakeries make this an attractive housing option. Your morning commute will cross with some rushhour traffic but I'm betting you're still only ~15 min. I actually don't know anyone living out there but if I were to move, it'd be to Chestnut Hill.

6. Center City
Our class has a few people who need to have the city close at hand. It's great to be able to escape the sight of school every so often and there is a shuttle that leaves 15th and Vine frequently enough so you don't have to worry about parking at school. It's not a bad option but you can't forget your labcoat or you'll have to repeat the 30-40 min rushhour commute.

Places to Avoid.
"The Other Side of Wissahickon". The school is located on the corner of Wissahickon Ave and Queen Lane. If you mapquest an apartment and it's on the other side of wissahickon from the school, don't bother. The area is run down and not safe.

Roxborough/Further down Henry Ave. While just up the hill from Manayunk, it's not that great. Some people live out there but I don't think it's worth the commute to pay a little less. The apartments are not that nice and even though you're close to the Andorra Mall (read: drug store, supermarket, library), I can't recommend it. It's very residential.

Last minute tips:
The DrexMed Housing is not the only resource for housing. I found my apartment by buying the Manayunk Newspaper (whose name I forget) for $0.50 on main st and calling some numbers. If you're feeling limited by what's on the housing site and live nearby, I'd come down and do some scouting and ask around.

Hope that was helpful. While CityIvy is probably much better about returning PMs, you can feel free to PM me as well. In any case, welcome and congrats, enjoy your summers and I look forward to meeting you in the fall.

jayvee

hey jayvee and CityIvy..

thanks for the advice and such....

where do you think is a good place for a first year to live? (and meet people and stuff) I'd like to get a place ASAP, but i wanna know where's the best place to be able to chill, study, throw parties. etc....

give me ur 2 cents..

thanks

tubs

hey guys..

any word on scholarships and ish???

trying to figure that out

tubs

You are a rock star. Ro and I may be coming down next weekend, I'll e-mail you with plans.

Sincerely,
Your number one stalker...I mean fan

😍

for those of you looking for housing....my apartment in School Lane House will be available beginning in june. it's a 2 bedroom apartment and the rent is $870 + utilities. PM me if you're interested. btw: i'm looking to move into a studio in the same building--the roommate thing didn't work out so well for me. 🙂

I am unsure as to whether I ouhg to search for a roommate or live alone. I see pro's and con's for both. Then again, I have a cat - and he considers himself roommate enough.

Did anyone receive financial aid package from Drexel yet. I think I remember seeing something that indicated March, but it's already April and no word yet. Any ideas when this info may be coming our way?

X

I just got the financial aid info yesterday, and I live in Philly.

Best,

Bob

I got the packet to apply for Fin aid today. Figure everyone is going to get inthe next few days.

yah guys...

i got my stuff today...and I'm in cali.....guess it depends on when you sent ur Fafsa in. I submitted mine on the 26th of Feb online...

hope this helps..

tubs

Got mine also in Cali. Haven't sent in my FAFSA for Drexel though. That is a pretty hefty price tag. But I guess so are all private schools.

Ok - So I am waiting to get my pin to do my FAFSA. I have sort of a silly uestion. I mean - when can I get access to fin aid monies - so I can make a deposit on an apartment? Is it necessary to go to Philly to look at, cement an apartment? When in the summer are you guys planning on going out to look if you are?

Hey! Welcome to Drexel!!! 🙂

I will hopefully be at the PIL orientation (depending on some family things) so I hope to see those of you that choose that route there. If you have any questions, PM me. I have an exam on Monday and Tuesday, but I will get back to you ASAP!

Btw-- Park Heights and Empirian Luxury apts both allow cats-- for dogs, you might need to get a house. One cool thing-- check out www.homestore.com and just search for apts. or rentals via ZIP code! It gives you prices and what's included at each place...

Best,
Mylaina

I visited Drexel this week to dink around and talk to people and look at housing. I am thinking about living in Center City now after the visit - because I want to be in the city proper... I also do not want to have to bring a car, and I would like to be where there is stuff happening within walking distance.

I am thrilled about Drexel. Wearing my Drexel tee-shirt. Yeah , I am a big dork.

Lisa said a packet of stuff is coming our way this week, btw.

jmwalker - you are a dork!! but when i read that i thought, oh, i wish i had a shirt. if i could fly out there now, i'd probably stock up on shirts and sweatdshirts and whatever else i could find.
🙂
it's fun being excited about a school!

Hi Everyone!

I am a potential new Drexel entree too. Just got accepted into the PIL program. As with many of you, I'm from California too but I have been here in Philadelphia for the last two years.

Looking forward to meeting everyone,

Blues

He he .... I have the hat too, they came as a set. The hat is cool. eAnd a decal. I didnt want to sound tooooo dorkie so you guys would know my secrets and all, but then since everyone knows who i am already, so what the hell.

Any new members? House head - you gonna come here??

Hi all....Graduating Senior here..thought I'd post most of our matches this year. Not terrible considering how poorly my class did on the boards..

I hope this helps. Not 'great', but not bad considering how horribly my class did on step 1 (15% failed). Things are much better now I think (around 95% pass rate).

thanks, jackjinju. it looks a lot more promising than the 2002 matchlist!

Sorry...

I added Brown to the internal medicine list. I'm sure I skipped a few accidentally...I just zipped through the list by category. I'm trying my best, guys.

Cool - thanks! It was an interesting read. (I saw some CA ones for ya, lola 😉 )
