I applied but didn't realize THEY want FOUR letters cause the three everyone else wants isn't good enough for their hoity toity program, I think they just wanna have something on MGH, so.. while I wasn't too worried I would actually get an interview there, I am now sure I won't so good luck to everyone else. Who wants to live in Baltimore anyway.

if it makes you feel any better, listen to this one -- I currently have three letters uploaded to ERAS. my fourth letter, which so happens to also be the letter from the chairman at my home institution, has still not been submitted. I met with him in JULY. JULY. i have colleagues who met with him in september and even as late as october, and their letters are up on ERAS. mine is still missing. i have done everything you could possibly think of to get this letter in. i'm about to write to the dean of my school, because this is sheer lunacy. the guy should be fired. its his freaking job to do these letters, and to get them in on time. everyone knows the nov 1 deadline. so now hopkins is going to view my app as incomplete, cause i only have 3 letters in. i am so pissed right now, i might have a stroke.

so...is anyone else tired of refreshing your email? I don't even want to go to hopkins, why do I stress about this?

That is so annoying! I would definitely contact your dean. It is in their best interest to get you into the best program possible, so if a faculty member is standing in your way the dean would probably appreciate hearing it.

totally not cool man...I thought my dean was bad for getting my letter in only 2 days before...thats not fair for you at all...I think that you should say something, and if you are interested in hopkins, I think if you call and tell them, or email the program director, they may consider your app...I knew someone last year who never got one of his letters in, and columbia offerred him an interview after he called and explained the situation, and subsequently had to get a letter from another attending like rushed there (after the deadline)...but the PD was cool about it...good luck dude...I feel your pain

It's not a strong program at all. I heard it's all scutwork. If you want fellowships, aim for all the university programs.

thanks for the info - will withdraw. I applied when I still didn't know a lot about different programs and was interested in NY. Will hold out for columbia, although I feel that it prob. won't come if it hasn't yet

I mean, if you have the money, go visit all the programs that you get. But I think we all are restricted by time, $$$, and we have to be realistic on whether or not we can visit the programs.

I will be rooting for your Columbia, when you get it! 👍
I have faith in you..

dont be negative yet nick...columbia only sent out one round of mass invites, and a few select preinvites before nov 1...I think theres still a good chance (hope u applied to cornell and mt sinai too cuz they are also strong nyc programs as is nyu)...I'll be rooting for you dude

I wish more programs would also overlook a non-top anything medical school, and look at candidates based on their individual merits...I keep wondering if I will be screwed because of my med school...I have heard that for IM name of med school means more than any of your stats...oh well...I guess only time will tell...for now I have to go back and get my step 2 reading on!!

I am currently at a small state school, and I have interviews in hand from pretty decent programs so far. I was worrying about the small school stigma as well, but so far it has not been a problem. I don't even have any research. Just decent boards, grades and letters. I am incredibly good looking which probably tipped the scales in my favor.

hey loopo

you're right I have some great interview offers too...but something tells me that MGH/BWH JHU UCSF and some others MAY not be so forgiving about small state schools like we are in...like I said only time will tell...I guess we can see...

Interviews seem to have slowed to a crawl even s/p Nov. 1st. Since then, only Cedars and BU. Still awaiting BWH, JHU, BID, UWash, OHSU, U Chicago, Northwestern, UPenn. Granted they're biggies, but what's the deal, yo? Cheap plane fares wait for no man!

And with regards to the deadlines, I thought that those posted deadlines were for applications to be submitted, not necessarily completed. The completion dates are usually closer to December/January, no? Cuz if not, I'm gonna have to sit on the chair of my school to get him to send his letter. Asked about it last week to his ghost writer and she told me to "just relax."

Boo.

My list:

UIC (sched)
Cincinatti (not)
Cleveland Clinic (sched)

New Mexico (Sched)
UTMB (sched)
Emory (sched)
Pitt (sched)
USC (not)

just relax?? some of these people do not realize how important this stuff is to us. we've been working our arses off for god knows how many years to reach this point. and now at the very end of the road, we're supposed to be relaxed about the fact that the entire thing is going to be screwed up by and incompetent letter-writer and/or incompetent secretary who can't get my stuff in on time.

i can't believe she told you to "just relax". if that had been me, i would have lost it.

should I call scott walker the coordinator at JHU...I cant keep checking my email every 10 minutes...its getting annoying...at this point I just want a yes or no...arf...

if anyone is as frustrated as me and has fewer inhibitions his number is

It is certainly very annoying when letter writers delay an application. Being faculty at an academic medical center comes with the responsibility of teaching students, evaluating students, and writing letters. All of you folks applying for residencies now will eventually become attendings. Just remember that no matter how busy you are, if someone asks for a letter, and you willing agree to write a letter, write the letter ASAP. It is better to turn down the request than to say yes and then not write the letter in time.

Here man, jsut sit back, take a hit off my bowl and relax man, que sera sera man, que sera sera.

JHU - rejections are by mail, invites email so if you havn't heard then check your mail in 4 days.

Just wanted to say that I think it's great how you posted honestly and now more people are coming out of the woodwork. This site is so much more helpful when you can look as a 3rd year and find others who are like you, with both stronger and weaker aspects of the application, instead of just a handful of superstars.

Anyway, congrats on a great list of interviews. I wish Stanford would be as willing to overlook a HP in medicine as easily as a below-average board score!

I certainly don't have a superstar application either. No honors in medicine, no AOA, no preclinical honors, 235 on Step 1. I'm happy to have received some good interview invites (Michigan, Mayo, Wash U) but not from the east (BWH) or west (Washington, Stanford) programs yet. We'll have to see in this post-Dean's letter/transcript period whether I'll be weeded out.

heh,heh... yeah, i wish....

I'm waiting on several places as well. I think I have a pretty weird mix between places I'm waiting for and places I've heard from (I heard from places like Sinai, Yale, and Mayo-Rochester weeks before places like UConn and Albert Einstein-LIJ ... go figure). I think we all need to just sit back and try our best to be calm and wait.

I could only imagine a program director or coordinator sitting back and laughing maniacally reading this thread while his finger hovers over the "send" button on the ERAS mailing system (if there is a send button). It is really interesting if you think about it how a click of a button that takes no more than a second can cause such anxiety or ecstasy in so many people.

🙂 Well, good luck to all for now. Hopefully we all get what we want.

And remember, if you get a rejection from a top notch program and an invitation from another one ... it could all have been in how they read your application (person A may have just found what you've done much more interesting and "shpeshul" than person B).

I now return to watching House on my Tivo while I enjoy not having stayed in my elective past noon for a single day this past month. 🙄

Man, I was wondering.....

Finalized list of programs I'm interviewing at. There are still a couple that I haven't heard from but I'm satisfied with what I have and am going with it.

Abbott Northwestern (offered Sept.)
Creighton (Oct)
Hennepin County (Sept)
U of Iowa (Nov)
U of Iowa-Des Moines (Oct)
U of Kansas, aka KU Med (Sept)
U of Minnesota (Oct)
U of Missouri (Sept)
U of Nebraska (Oct)

Good luck to all of you! Maybe I'll see a couple of you on the interview trail.

Man, it's been a million years since I've posted anything here.

Interviews so far (applied to 10 places, geographically ltd):

BIDMC
Brown
Lahey Clinic
Mount Auburn
Tufts-NEMC
UMass
Cambridge (declined)
St. Vincent Hospital (may decline)

Waiting BWH, MGH

Wanted to get some advice re:BWH. I tried with no avail to get a rotation there. Will finally be doing one starting 11/21. Should I inform the PD of this? I was wondering if it would make any difference in getting an interview invite... Or should I wait until I've been there a few weeks and try to get a quick letter in etc?

Tx,S

Hey Serpiente,

I'd think that they would have already decided who to give interviews to by 11/21 at a program as competitive (and small) as BWH. I'd probably try to get them to know that I was scheduled for an away rotation if I were you. From my experience, the course directors/coordinators and the program directors generally aren't in touch with each other. At my away rotation, I was told on the very last day by the course director's secretary to "go talk to Ms. H, and tell her that I sent you...she'll put a special note in your application folder"

Best of luck!

bah humbug...

oh, forget it already. who cares about jhu.

I am really interested in the University of Chicago, but have not yet heard from them. I know that a bunch of people on this forum have already received their interview invitation. Do you think I should give a call and see what my status is? or is it too early still? would that piss anyone off? what about an e-mail to someone? the PD?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

It'd probably be worth it to call...I've heard of quite a few of smaller programs willing to offer an interview to an applicant who indicated that they were very, very interested in matching at that program.

ucladukes,

Not couples matching, I just had no real idea where I wanted to go. I have a low step I and a higher step II so I decided to apply widely, despite intending to do no more than 15-20 interviews.

Wishful Thoughts: UCLA, UCSD, MGH, BWH, BIDMC

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO lOVE TODAY EITHER
Only 2 invites since Dean's Letter!

Step I - 211/86
Step IICK - 237/96
Step II CS - In February
Top 150 Med School
No Preclinical Honors
Near-Honors in Surgery and Peds
Honored my Sub-I which programs probably don't know
3 pretty good letters (like everyone else)
Not AOA
Some interesting extracuricular stuff
2 non-biomedical pubs and a case report in progress

So I email NYU about my application and they tell me that my application is "on hold." They also say "please contact mid-december if still interested".

Is "on hold" the insider jargon for "waitlisted?" Or an evasive way of saying "go take a hike?"

Freaking out right now since I've only received interviews from 2 of the 12 programs I applied to (all ones my advisor recommended based on my stats). From lurking on the forums it seems like all the programs I applied to have been offering interviews for a while now.
Anybody else in the same boat? Or am I the solitary lame duck here? 🙁

rastaman,

don't worry too much, but if I were you I would carefully call each school, especially the ones you were interested in, and just speak to each of them (or the PD) and express your interest in the program. It's still early, however, and I am not sure when it would be best to call...I get nervous fast, but a lot of others here say waiting is the name of the game...please contradict me someone if you believe my advice is bad...

so, I'm starting to get concerned. I haven't heard a thing from the NE programs (Penn, Cornell, Columbia, NYU, Mount Sinai, boston programs). Is it too early to panic? here are my stats:

AOA (at a bottom tier med school)
Step 1: 250
Step 2: in 4 days
Third year honors: Medicine, Surgery, Peds and Psych (HP in ob/gyn and family med)
Pubs: 2, a few in the works, strong extracurrics (at least thats what I've been told)

I go to a school in the southeast....is this some sort of geographical bias or am I just an "above average" applicant?

For what it's worth, I did speak to Hasan Bazari when I did an elective at MGH and he said that we should hear from them around Nov. 15th or so. I imagine it may be the same for some of the other high powered east coast program (although it seems several people have already received invites from BWH and BIDMC). In my humble opinion it is too early to panic, but we're medical students here and I think panicking may be a part of the requirements - I think it was in our student handbook somewhere. As for geographical bias - I come from among the top 145 US schools 😉 so I can sympathize with you on that. Maybe some of the BWH and BIDMC interview candidates can post their general geographic location?

the fact that your score is way too high for internal medicine

and also the fact that you are from the south, doesn't really bode well at all...

I mean, hello, thats were Rosa Parks got discriminated? What are you doing studying there? 😀

(Dude, in all seriousness....all those programs are going to bend over backwards for you, just give it 2 more weeks)....thats when the floodgates will really open
