Yall should have seen my MGH dance...It was something brilliant
I called duke today (actually have been calling for the last week but got a live person for the first time today) and they said they will still be offering interviews...B/W when I called last week said they send interview invites through the first week of december sometimes...UCSF I called, but got voicemail, so no clue there...and I never called stanford, so if anyone has info on those two cali guys it'd be good...no rejection yet, but also no news...inositide said:And there we have it folks. It seems that virtually all of the invites have been sent. If Columbia,Cornell,BIDMC,MGH,West Coast,MidWest,South programs etc have not replied yet, then I think what the eventual correspondence will say is quite predictable.
After the issuing of MGH invites, I think that there are no remaining programs where mass invites are still pending. Only the "Due to the outstanding pool of candidates this year..." emails remain to be sent. An invite *might* trickle in every now and then it's less likely.
Anyone disagree?

to sum up...I think there is still some hope over the next few weeks...but don't be holding out for anything...I'd say start solidifying schedules and making travel plans within the two weeks.
Sorry Raph, I have to TOTALLY disagree with that...I am sure programs do not disregard all of your credentials when you get to the interview, but I also believe that interviews are exceptionally important, and occasionally had "made" several applicants (I am sure they could break people too)...I also think that the date when you receive the interview should not be used as a measuring stick as to how highly you rank, as different programs send invites differently based on geography, date of receipt, which members of the selection committee received your app, and many other factors...I think once an interview is granted, treat yourself as being on an equal footing, as you are most likely at minimum as qualified as every other applicant there for that spot, otherwise the program wouldn't interview you...be confident, and remember interview can help you a great deal...raph91 said:Part of me is forced to think (and I know this might not be true) that the later you get with no invite, the more likely it is a "fill in" for somebody who chose not to interview there or a lower place on their original "idealized ranking" of people. This makes me wonder how likely it is to get a good spot on their rank list because I don't believe that, come interview day, we are all placed on equal footing and then re-analyzed from scratch. I would think that except for a few people, there would be little mobility in terms of moving up or down relative to where they saw you in their applicant pool when they first read the app.
This is just my perception. Sure an interview *could* make you, but I would think that it would be more likely to break you (the well-credentialed but overtly obnoxious, annoying applicant).
Correct me if I'm mistaken. (I really hope I am.)

Non-AOA, non-top 25 med school.
Honored IM, lettered OB/GYN.
Undergrad honors thesis, did research in med school, but zero publications -- for I am the master at choosing projects that go nowhere, yet oddly take up time and energy.
My list (nothing new, but alphabetized):
Boston U
Case Western
Duke
Hopkins - Bayview
Ohio State
Tufts - NEMC
UNC
UVA
Wake Forest
Rejections:
JHU, MGH.
Pending rejections:
Yale - New Haven, BIDMC, BWH.
Best of luck to you all.

I heard if you collect all three rejection letters from the Harvard programs you can turn it in for a super secret decoder ring...
MISTERshortcoat said:HA! Somehow, I feel that my decoder ring will lead me to a secret treasure: another research project that doesn't publish. Hee he.

will start making phone calls tomorrow. no sense in continuing to be shy, as the rejections pile up...

I think the cat is out of the bag, and if we do get interviews, then it'll be slots they need to fill for their 'quota'. Let's face it! If they were truly interested they would have sent out an invitation. I think there may be some truth to the regional selection, but still....I may try calling tomorrow...can't hurt right?
doug said:oh it hurts, for sure. I emailed and called a bunch of programs over the weekend and wound up getting myself rejected from NYU, Mt. Sinai and Cornell. Still no word from Columbia.
Zolpidem25 said:so do you think that calling the programs accelerated/facilitated them rejecting you? i mean, that could be somewhat of a coincidence...
did you speak to the actual PDs of those programs, or secretaries?

AOA at Top 30 school
Step 1: 256
Step 2 CK: not till Feb
Honors in Sub-I, Psych, Peds, Ambulatory Medicine; HP in everything else, including 3rd year IM
MSPE grouping: Outstanding/Top 20%
Significant research experience, 3 presentations, no pubs
My PD also correctly predicted that my application would be quickly rejected on the East Coast primarily on my non-AOA, board score and geographical location of our school (although I managed to eke out BID). He mentioned to me that I would be throwing my money away applying to the East Coast, but since each application is only a couple bucks it is worth trying. He felt my borderline board grades would be offset by my publications on the West Coast. I was surprised about how much insight he had into the interview process after seeing my application in under 5 minutes (i.e. he skipped my personal statement and extracurriculars, went straight to the last page of the Dean's letter, USMLE transcript, asked if I was AOA and asked how many first author publications I had). Nonetheless I was glad he was brutally honest and at least gave me realistic expectations.BigBadBix said:The PD at my school predicted that some top places might screen me out b/c of my HP in Medicine without even looking at my file, so I suppose that's what's happened.

I think the PD meant borderline for the most competitive IM residencies on the East Coast. We went over the programs I was applying to and he divided it into three groups: programs that I would get interviews and probably ranked to match (Emory, UTSW, Baylor, Wash U, U Michigan), programs that I would get interviews, but not guaranteed to match (UCSF, Stanford) and programs where I probably wouldn't get interviews (JHU, MGH, BWH, BID).BigBadBix said:A 245 is a borderline board score for IM? Maybe on SDN, but I thought in the real world that was a good score...isn't that like the 90th percentile or something?
BigBadBix said:Despite the fact that I keep bemoaning my medicine grade, I do realize that's not the only problem with my app - the lack of pubs is definitely hurting me as well.
