Some of you guys are really lucky to have a PD that looks at your list of applications. At my school I felt like it was a 'bad thing' to apply out of state, and never thought about giving him a chance to look at my list. I interviewed at my program and told them I would rank them highly =)

Any thoughts about whether it might be bad to interview at end of January, early February?? I know the programs can start submitting their rank list towards the end of January, and I already have some interviews past that date....

My PD also correctly predicted that my application would be quickly rejected on the East Coast primarily on my non-AOA, board score and geographical location of our school (although I managed to eke out BID). He mentioned to me that I would be throwing my money away applying to the East Coast, but since each application is only a couple bucks it is worth trying. He felt my borderline board grades would be offset by my publications on the West Coast. I was surprised about how much insight he had into the interview process after seeing my application in under 5 minutes (i.e. he skipped my personal statement and extracurriculars, went straight to the last page of the Dean's letter, USMLE transcript, asked if I was AOA and asked how many first author publications I had). Nonetheless I was glad he was brutally honest and at least gave me realistic expectations.

AAMC makes students sell their souls to get into US school then brutely treats them like garbage. Gee, 241 on step 1, what a loser!!! And you only attended a PUBLIC US med school!! gee another reason you are a loser!! God, these academics are just assh----!! And in 2 weeks I (yes IMG) have to start interviewing with these pricks! I'm gonna bite my lower lip off having to smile if I come across one of these guys! While they sit around patting each other on the back about how great they are, US schools currently produce a deficit of doctors per year of about 6000 and the most recent statement from AAMC says that 5000 MORE PER YEAR are needed. Well, I'm coming to the rescue and luckily my application came across some more realistic PD's desk. Your PD would have a field day with my appl. but fu----! Sorry for the rant, but I just think the whole process of how we select, educate and train doctors in this country is f-----! And hopefully it will change..AFTER I pay off my student loans! 😀

I like this guy. 🙂 I completely agree. These academic programs sicken me with the attitude. I interviewed at an outstanding community program earlier this week and am confident I can get better clinical training there than at most of the university programs I applied to. Although this particular program does pretty darned well with fellowship placement for a community program, it's still not as easy to get to GI or Cards as at a university program, so I still have to count that as a potential strike against the program because they don't get billions of dollars of research money. What a load of crap.

Here's the bottom line: the best specialists are excellent internists first, but at the residency programs where you have to go to position yourself for a fellowship, research takes precedence over the clinical training.

I enjoyed phoning JHU and MGH this week to tell them I wasn't coming to their damned interviews so that I could bow before their holy throne of medicine. Get over yourselves.

I think pretty much everyone at our school (categorical and prelim) was rejected by MGH on the same day and our credentials were a pretty broad range (AOA, Step I, Step II, research). Pretty much the only thing common with each other is we went to the same school. Some of us have received interviews from BWH though.

I think school reputation (Northeast top 30-40) counts for a lot as well; your program probably has put out great graduates in addition to you that go to the top programs. I think for many of our graduates, they tend to stay in the South because of the lower cost of living and there are less of our graduates at other West and East Coast schools (hence we may look good on paper, but there is no established pedigree). Just looking at the rejections thread there are stellar candidates being rejected; often the schools that are rejecting them are not in the same part of the country where they go to school.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this assertion. First off, I don't agree that "top" programs emphasize research before clinical training. Why would you think this? Sure, some residents at places like MGH or Hopkins will do research, but it's hardly the case that this takes PRECEDENCE, as you claim, over clinical training. For example, I've seen the Duke IM program first-hand as a student over the past few years, and have found the clinical training to be absolutely superb, and quite honestly is light-years above and beyond that of other departments here. Residents don't all do research, and those who do aren't neglecting their clinical skills, since they don't spend all that much time doing research even if they want to. Furthermore, having seen a few different programs at this point, it's quite evident to me that the less "academic" and more community-based programs often have difficulty ensuring the consistency of their conferences and the quality of teaching, perhaps since they have fewer interested faculty. To me, that suggests that the clinical training would be better at a more academic, top program with more resources. This is one of the big draws of a top program, in addition to the fact that you learn LOTS from your fellow interns and residents, and stand to benefit from being surrounded by the best and brightest. It seems to me that fellowship programs are interested in residents from top programs because they are, in fact, better trained CLINICALLY.

Elitism is alive and well. Grade inflation is also alive and well. But since you can't do anything about it, there is no point in worrying about it. My school is not one of the elite schools, but the way it makes up for it is by taking a disproportionately large number of it's own alumni into residency and fellowship programs. The residency is not the big deal, but the fellowships are. This is not unique to my school. A lot of programs tend to accomodate their own if the "elitist" programs shut them out.

It was just cruel...As I opened the second one, I hoped it said "sorry that email was sent on accident...come interview!" mmm...maybe not. I was so happy about MGH but I felt that Brigham would have been a much better fit for my personality. Guess they felt differently!

Called UW today as now I'm freaking out that I'm only going to end up with 6 interviews which for me is not enough to make a proper decision. Said that they haven't even looked at my application but that decisions are "rolling" and if I haven't heard by Dec. 1 to give them another call.

What's up with Columbia and UCSD? And I don't get why I haven't gotten any Sinai love...

So sorry about BWH. This has definitely been a disheartening week for many of us. At least you have MGH!!! I am super jealous.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I think you should call UCSD. I think they are just slow. If you call the number on ERAS and not their website, you can get the Program Coordinator directly. She is very helpful and will tell you your status (I've done it twice, and the second time she told me my invite was on its way. It was definitely worth it for my peace of mind).

BTW, I would certainly expect UW to interview you. They acted like I had this amazing app when I was there (unless they were just being nice?), and yet I have been shut out by several other top programs including MGH, which you have. They are just super slow - last year someone on SDN got an invite to UW on Dec 15!

I imagine 6 interviews (5+presumably your home institution) would be more than enough to match. Based on your stats I see no reason why your home institution would not rank you.

I know I've got a spot at home if I want it but I really want to go to a new city. I love my school but I also am a big fan of change. It's hard now because 1/2 my interviews are at great programs but aren't at my ideal location, whereas the programs in great spots are not my top choices. I'm just confused and I hope that as I head out to visit all the programs, things will become clearer. Heading to Denver tomorrow...Should be fun-- I heard the program is awesome and very chill.
