What would you do if all the schools that you applied invite you for interviews pre-Dec-2?

He will probably just go to 4-5 and call it. Otherwise , he's dropping 5+ grand on just interviewing !

I think the rule of thumb is you don't drop any pre-December interviews and if happy with your December acceptances then you can do as you please after that. Affordability is a different issue altogether, but my guess is that if you spent the money to apply to 15+ schools then you are probably able to afford to interview at at least half of those. Just my 2c.

Interview #3 and so infinitely excited about this one!

How are people managing with school with 5+ interviews?

I would personally think that rule of thumb applies if u get 3-4 interviews. If somebody gets 5 interviews and doesn't make it in Dec then maybe he/she is not meant to be a dentist !! Idk if you agree with this though. This wouldnt apply to international applicants.

not necessarily. one could bat 1.000 on their pre-dec interviews without receiving offers until the following year.

just because one interviews (or even applies) earlier doesnt guarantee an earlier decision. this would explain the existence of hold and alternate lists, no?

I'm not so sure about that. I applied to 17 schools thinking that would give me the best chance of getting accepted come December (I have a below average GPA). Already have two interviews and am slightly worried about how I am going to pay for everything if I get several more. Didn't really foresee this as an issue when initially applying, but lets say I get five-six interviews (hypothetical, I probably won't get that many) and I spend $500 on travel for each one (likely to be higher, but that is just an estimation). That's $3000 which is pretty big chunk of change most people don't have lying around, especially us older applicants who work for a living. Maybe I'm in the minority, but if I got 6+ interviews I would have to think about which schools are higher on the priority list and make decisions based off of that. I highly doubt I would be able to accept all 6+ (which sucks because turning down an interview just seems...so counterproductive)

but most who get interviews pre-december are usually the ones that the school wants, correct? so if a person can get 4+ pre-december interviews(numbers must be good), and doesn't get admitted in December, to me that just shows a personality issue or not so great interview skills. just my opinion though.

I agree. I applied to more schools than I anticipated because I thought my QR score would hold me back. Had I known interviews would come like this, I wouldn't have applied to so many schools. I still plan on interviewing to most of the schools that gave me interviews, but really had to think hard about which ones to attend.

I agree with what you said to some extent but Ferneezy makes a good point. Also, if you are looking for 1 or 2 acceptances from anywhere than it may make sense to you. But you cannot predict which schools will give you those acceptances and therefore may not be left with a lot of choices. Additionally, you may be missing on some possible scholarship offers if you drop some of the interviews. I also think that interview is a good way to meet people and learn more about the school since not many schools will give you that opportunity unless you are invited for an interview. For instance, I personally didn't think much of UNLV but after visiting the school and talking to students and faculty I was extremely impressed and it literally became one of my top choices. For me it doesn't stop there. Since I have a family my decision will affect them significantly and for that reason I would feel more comfortable if I had some choice in the matter. I have also spent a ton of money (application cost, DAT prep cost, post bacc tuition, lost income since I am now working only part time) on this process and I simply can't justify not spending additional $500-600 on an interview.
I was actually PM'd by someone who has upward of 6 interviews and he/she was thinking of dropping one of them. Given the fact that I have an interview at the same school I probably should have just said 'good idea' :naughty: but I didn't.

Wow I didn't realize that I have opened a can of worms. I guess it is safe to say that people have a very different approach. I really hope that none of you waste the opportunities you have worked hard for, but I do understand the financial hardships - it is one of the reasons why I am applying as a 36 year old.

this right here, is my mindset. i sacrificed what was, by most accounts, a cushy gig to leverage most of my retirement savings, and lots of my time, to achieve this end. i will not only attend every pre-dec interview i'm granted, but attend every interview until i'm sitting on an offer.

it's only then that i'll even begin to be in a position to make the kinds of choices this discussion is centered on.

Me too. I noticed it for UNC.

I was contemplating earlier about dropping an invite.
I am hopeful that the God of Dental Admissions would at least grant us one spot on Dec 2. It would just be tooooooo cruel to pay 10% early withdrawal penalty on the saving to madly attend all the interviews that comes our ways. I'm with you Ferneezy and others-there are other cost such as opportunity loss on the wages.
At this point, the excitement of receiving additional invites has some what diminished as they say in economic term 'diminishing marginal utility'. My credit card doesn't want to come out of my wallet easily.

Same as you, I won't drop any invite until I secure an offer-I'd just have to coax my credit cards to come out more often. 😍
GL everyone here!

Hey okilito, this thing exploded eh 🙂
GL to all that got interviews.

wow pepople are complaining about the cost of attending interviews while there're ppl who would die to receive just ONE interview. LAME.

I think aadsas is conjuring some black magic.

1st interview:

School: NOVA
Date of notification: 8/25/2013
Method of notification: E-mail
Residency: WA
AADSAS mail-out date: 7/09/2013
Application complete date: Not complete
GPA (science, overall): 3.52/3.65
DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading/any section below a 17): 20/21/18/18

Surprisingly my DAT scores haven't been uploaded to AADSAS and still got an interview. Therefore, my application is not even complete according to most schools.Anyone else experience this?

So you really are the guy from the commercial:idea:

Were all the professors ok about missing lectures or labs so far?

Congrats. Are you still taking courses this Fall?

I am taking 5 courses in the fall semester. I have planned all my flights so I am gone for the least amount of time possible. My professors have been very accommodating and if I'm missing any assignment dates, presentation dates, labs or exams have allowed me to write it another day. I likely won't go to all 7 interviews, but I want to go to as many as I can. You just have to study really hard this semester to make it all work

Are there any specific days that people can receive invites? Like any day of the week? Or like every Friday or something like that.

This is my problem! I have 4 interviews all in sept. the main problemis trying to work with labs. But I figured my grades will take a hit. I would rather get into d school with a lower gpa than skip an interview for an A. Also I think I have pretty much checked out of undergrad mentally :meanie:

I hear you. As this application process doesn't guarantee anything, with the possibility of reapplying, I wanted to maintain good grade. oh well 🙄

Is anyone doing a red eye flight? for their interviews?

Yup. To get back for micro lab on a Tuesday afternoon. I leave from San Fran at about 10 PM and get back to NC in the mid-morning. 😴

I'm doing the exact same to get back from UOP interview for an Animal Physiology lab

nice to see everyone over here talking about getting 'too many' interviews to be able to afford while I'm sitting in my room freaking out that I haven't gotten 1 yet
