Does anyone know how schools go about reviewing applications, or what part of the app is most important? I haven't heard from anywhere OOS (FL resident). I've seen a lot people on here who have gotten interviews at the same schools I applied to with app complete dates that are 2-3 weeks later than mine. Its not like my stats are low either, GPA(overall, science) : 3.76, 3.66 and DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading) 25/25/25/27. The only thing i can think of is my shadowing hours are a little low.

Playing this waiting game is killer :dead:

@gras10 I know a couple schools go with a point system. For example, you would get a certain number of points for a certain GPA (the higher, the more points you get), same for DAT scores, if you have solid ECs then they will get you points, same for PS and letters I guess (not sure about the last 2). Once you reach a certain number of points, you will get an interview invite.

hmmm. That could have something to do with it haha. I didn't realize any schools did that. Thanks for the help

Does anyone know what the difference is between "Received/Application Complete" and "Received/Under Review" on the ADEA application site?

Also, I have 2 interviews so far:

AADSAS mail-out date: 6/20/14
Application complete date: 6/17/14
GPA (science, overall): 3.72, 3.9
DAT AA: 19 (none below 17)

School: Marquette
Notification date: 9/9/14

GPA (science, overall) 3.72, 3.9

@tarheel616 not sure now, but a couple years ago there were many. Considering there are several schools that went from focusing on grades mainly to focusing on being well-rounded, they either stopped using it or found something else I don't know.. but if you know one of the schools you applied to cares mostly about grades and not much about other stuff, then this school probably uses that system

PS: all this info could be %100 right, or %100 wrong.. im just sharing what others have told me

Did you take your personal statement to an English professor or to the writing center? Your case seems odd.

why does it seem like the people with the highest stats dont get as many interviews as the average applications? i might be wrong but ive seen a couple 3.9/4.0 people with only 1-2 interviews and 3.4-3.5 can be sitting on like 4+. i feel like schools assume they will get interviews elsewhere or something

English is my second Language, so I asked my adviser to edit it, and he said my SOP is good to submit. I had 40 hour shadowing in Europe and 20 hours in USA when I submitted my application. But right now I have shadowed more than 60 hours but I can not update my application!

That honestly could be it. Schools might look at people with higher stats and think "even if we accept them they'll want to go somewhere 'better' so no need to even consider them"

It could be 🙁

I would disagree with that, I doubt schools would pass up people like that. Maybe they just see the high stats and not much else? It's quite clear now with the interview invite im seeing that they want well rounded individuals, high or low stats.

Man this sucks, it's their loss.
what is UCSF looking for this year?

I think what schools are looking for is students who have taken the time to investigate the field and are committed to serving their communities. They understand that a student with a 3.5 GPA and a 19 on the DAT is just as capable of completing the curriculum as one with a 4.0 GPA and a 25 on the DAT. I got an 18 on my DAT and have managed to get 4 interviews, so I think what they value is your commitment to dentistry and your community which is demonstrated through your ECs. So if you have a low GPA but also have excellent ECs there’s hope for you!!

Just got put on the waiting list for Western U... -_-

EDIT: Well, its on "continued review" whatever that means..but I guess its better than a rejection. Fingers crossed 🙂

I just received an email saying my application either has yet to be reviewed or a decision has not been made....is that the same one you got?

I think the people with less great stats have more extracurricular stuff, at least for me I knew my stats wouldn't be exceptional so I made sure I had a lot of other stuff to show I was committed!

@Digitalangel @MrsHawk44 my stats are average and I have a lot of stuff on my app and I still have only 1 interview 🙁 although my app was mailed out on August 11th...

Guys, every year applicants try and figure out what's going on in the heads of the adcoms, but you won't be able to come up with a definitive answer as to why you do or don't have interviews and someone else does.
My own theory as to why some seemingly average looking applicants have many more interviews than high stat applicants, is that they applied to a very large number of schools, or applied very strategically to only schools that historically accept applicants like them.
