**Official Interview/Acceptance/Rejection Thread 2014-2015**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I met a veteran who was told the same thing but then didn't get in. The thing is your interviewers probably don't have the final say so they are setting you up for disappointment when they can't deliver. That guy had a 4.0 gpa but one of the committee members thought he was too old (26) so he was passed up. I hope you get in... just sayin.
The avg age of enrollment for most dental schools according the the official guide is 24-26. Not sure where you are getting your information. How would you know what the committee member actually said?

Thanks for ruining the shred of confidence I was holding on to haha

Wait...26 is too old? What school?

This was many years ago and many schools see age as an asset since it can indicate maturity and experience. The point is that if you were told by your interviewer that you are in I wouldn't get my hopes up... it just means THEY think you are an exceptionally strong candidate, others may not.
This person knew because the head of the committee who thought he was too old told him. I don't think age discrimination like this would fly today, at least they wouldn't be open about it in fear of a lawsuit. 🙂

Haha, sorry that wasn't my intent. Being a little older probably will help you out. At least I hope so b/c I'm in the same boat.

I have the same thing for buffalo :/ I had an interview a few weeks ago. Does that mean I was rejected or wait listed?
My friend applied last year to buffalo same thing happend. He got accepted. It basically means they have a decision. Dec 1 your either going to see waitlisted, rejected , or offer made, something like that. Offer made means accepted.

Being a 26 y/o veteran, this frightens me.

I have never in my life heard that 26 is 'old' for anything ( unless you are counting in bunny years) until now. I wouldn't worry too much on the age thing. ( for instance, UNLV class of 2018's ave age is 26, 9 being over 30). BTW, nice stats and experiences.

They mentioned above that was many years ago. Being older is seen as better now (more life experience, more mature) while being younger is often seen as a disadvantage (not always but more often than being older) So my prehealth advisor says. You guys will be fine. Deep breaths 🙂

Haha I'm just being flippant. I just thought it was funny that it was like he was talking about me a bit. Funny how all the vets that I recognize on SDN chimed in

Can somebody help me out with this for the next 46 hours?

For health professions, the older the better. The more mature u look in the interview, the better. If u have kids, even better. They know they don't have to deal with tons of crap with u because all u need to have your life complete is your profession- everything else is taken care off. So for all of u >26, i'm 28 and got 8 interviews! Cheers!

Not true at all. There are a few schools that do not like older students. However, if you have an additional degree with your bachelors, the age stigma goes away. If two applicants differ only by age, most committees will accept the younger applicant if they had to choose one.

I don't agree with that, but u make a good point, it all depends on the school. At least east coast schools are not like that. I can't speak for the rest of the country tho!

Question for all you older applicants. What do you do for academic letters of recommendation? I don't think my profs will remember me in 6 years given the number of students they meet each year

I just emailed mine and explain my situation and very briefly described what I've been doing for the past however many years. I also mentioned what class they were my prof and a few students I graduated with to help jog their memory. Then I attached my personal statement, transcripts, DAT scores, and resume.

One of my teachers remembered me from Freshman year! I'm FB friends with some of my old professors so it was pretty easy getting letters. If you didn't got to class or show up to office hours, then you may be screwed and a committee letter will probably be your best option.

Acceptance!! Nova!

Via snail mail, dated for December 1st. Im a South Carolina resident.

Interviewed early September.
What? I thought NOVA notified via a phone call. Congrats if you're not trolling lol

Ouch that hurt lol no one has ever called me old before lol but I'm just graduating now because I came from another country and had to start college really late. But I guess u have to take a couple of classes and use those professors for ur recommendations!

Not old, just older haha

Haha, I understand I've been fairly sarcastic on the forums. But this is for reals.
FIRST DENTAL SCHOOL ACCEPTANCE through mail! I love you NOVA. Thank you for allowing me to celebrate this while I'm still with my family.
Congrats you guys!!! I need to leave the library and check my mail!

I'm in school now. I was in the Marine Corps before school. It's common to marry young and have kids young in the military.

I went back to school. So I have two letters from dentist that I have worked with as a dental assistant (7+ years now). I also got a letter from my physics professor whom I took four straight semesters with and eventually worked for as a TA. My last one was from my PI.

You guys made me get my hopes up and think that an acceptance letter from NOVA could arrive in Seattle by today, haha. Congrats to everyone that got some great news today
Just keep hitting that bong until Monday.

Hahaha talking about age... Im 31!!! 😵
:nailbiting::hungover:

... Got 9 interviews... Went to 7 and the other 2 i didnt go because i ran out of money... And i only have my bachelors degree... Dont freak out about the age... I agree, the older you are and the more mature you look at your interview ... The better... I got accepted to NOVA and im waiting for the rest... Dont get discouraged because you think you are old... Being old doesnt mean that i wont be able to make it 😉

Im from Florida!!

I was joking. Assuming I am accepted, I'll probably be the last person to receive a letter in the mail considering the distance

Theoretically I would have been the first since I live 10 minutes from Nova. But since I changed my address to my school address and I'm still home for Thanksgiving break I won't know until tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
