ABFAS alone has never hurt an applicant other than if they are overqualified for a job.Going after ABFAS is the single worst thing a job applicant can do. Telling people to pursue ABFAS is bad advice
You (and certainly many others) have done fine without ABFAS and might have things you do not like about ABFAS, but this is horrible advice. Many jobs still have a requirement for ABFAS, and some of the jobs that say both boards can apply, still have a preference for ABFAS. It is changing and might be technically illegal, but many hospitals still require ABFAS for surgical privileges also.
At the very least one should get ABPM immediately and become board qualified by ABFAS. One can decide if they feel ABFAS is necessary, worth the effort or something they will be able to obtain. Certainly one should not become a slave to the process and organization as ABFAS does not guarantee a great job.
The real problem is saturation/horrible job market. If podiatrists were in short supply it would not matter what board one was certified by and we would all be recruited while in residency and while in practice. We would also all paid like MDs, DOs and CRNAs with good salalries and benefits and jobs readily available in most metros. This is not podiatry and it might never be. Make saturation go away and the odds are high the boards merge. No one can predict with certainty if or when this will happen.
If the boards merged tomorrow with saturation there would just be another filter or requirement like a fellowship or certain type of fellowship for jobs.
