Hi April 2006 MCATers,

Some posters have requested that we have one serious thread where only announcements and information about the April 2006 MCAT score release are posted. This thread is it. After the scores are released (on JUNE 20TH!!!), y'all can post your scores in here as well. But in the meantime, please while away the time in the Official April 2006 thread so that we can avoid cluttering this one up with unrelated posts. As always, please remember that false score release posts and threads are a no-no, and good luck to everyone waiting. 🙂

1. AN
2. 34-39
3. Kaplan
4. Stunned in an insanely happy way. I must have lucked out with some guesses on the BS; I had no right to expect anything better than an 11 on that section, and I was hoping 12-13 on the others. Anything that pulls up the 2.8 GPA I graduated with is good!
wow, pemberley, that is SO impressive! perfectly balanced, too! i definitely think that awesome score will blow away your GPA. best of :luck: in the app process!

Wow...with a masters in Biology and Biomedical Sciences, you should not have to retake Physics and General Chemistry! I think we should work on a different explanation for the 7!

Yeh, need to come up with something realistic and creative, without making me look like a slacker for not taking Kaplan prep courses and such. I can't really lean on the whole, "life is too busy working and taking classes to focu on prepping physics and chem" because med school will be busy too, and will still need to prep for step I and II.

Thanks...my wife and I are very much looking forward to starting our family! We are a bit concerned about child care...She's now a fourth year OB/GYN resident, and I am about the embark on the medical school journey! Any recommendations in this area would be highly appreciated!

Wow, you are going to be very busy too! You will love every minute of being a Dad though. True, you will never sleep the same way again, but somehow it just isn't as distressing as you would think having to get up every hour or two. When that baby cries, you WANT to take care of her/him. At least that was my experience.

I think working full time while obtaining a masters degree should be enough to prevent ADCOMs from placing you in the slacker category! How were your science grades in undergrad? Perhaps you were simply nervous during the very first section of the MCAT? Maybe it threw off your timing (this was a huge problem for me...I was scrambling at the end of every section!).

BTW, with only one section being affected, have you considered the possibility of a bubbling error...maybe a problem with the scantron?

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!! I remember your disappointment with the 6 in VR from last year bringing down your score. I'm so glad to see it worked out.

Thanks so much gujuDoc!! And thanks for your help! I still have nightmares about that verbal section with a convoluted 10 question pirate passage.

Thanks, SM! I got very, very lucky, most especially on the BS.
Here's :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: back at you for the application process, although with research & academics like yours, you won't really need it. 🙂 There are several people from our countdown thread that I'll be rooting for in the months to come. 😍

34S - 11 PS 13 VR 10 BS

1. Your Form (If you remember): My head was spinning to hard. I took the CBT in london if that helps (also, PM me if you were there, great group of people)

2. Your Practice Score Range: 31-34

3. What you used to Study:
Big Kaplan Book
The AAMC tests (best source)
Kaplan topic tests
Scientific Americans and nature articles for VR

4. How do you feel right now?
Before scores: Sat down, almost vomited. Felt super nausious. Opened the web page. 34S came into focus. Was pumping myself up for a 28/29 and how I would retake in a year or two. Hands went numb. Fell backwards. (was sitting on the stairs with my laptop so its ok) Thanked god, my parents, and the academy.
Now - pissed that I got an 11 instead of 12 in PS and can't really write in the 35+ forums. j/k
In a state of shock and awe that I got an S even though I have always considered myself a poor writer.
Upset because I promised myself I would go through with MD applications if I got a 32+, since I just have a 3.1, I know I have to "carpet bomb" as someone said my apps to even et some interviews. There goes a good chunk of summer with my research.
Truthfully, couldn't be happier. Its finally over? Or just beginning?

Hello all. I just checked my score:

series: 31
Verbal: 12
Physical: 12
Writing: M
Biological: 11

What does the "series" entry mean? Did I get a 31 or a 35?
 just a thought...it's probably not the best idea to make your mcat score your SN!

you're just over your first scary hill of the roller coaster ride that will be our lives for the next few decades

33R: 13V, 9P(poo), 11B. I'm happy. I was getting 30-32 on the practice tests. Now I'm free!!! I accepted a year long contract with Catholic Relief Services doing health programming for refugees in Chad, and it had come to the point where i couldn't take the exam again, or I'd have to not go to Chad... so I'm happy!!! I made one phone call from Haiti and had them call everyone else, so everyone I know has downloaded msn messenger, ha! Congrats to everyone!!!! Now, turn in those apps if you haven't already!!!!

Undergrad science grades were pretty good (3.6 something average). B+ and A- in Physics. B's in chem. I expected PS to be lower because I really was nervous, and I ran out of time and had to rush-bubble a number of questions at the end (maybe 10?). After that section I got my timing down and did much better. Also, early in the PS I realized I was mis-bubbling and had to erase and re-bubble (went down a column instead of over, or vice versa ... can't remember). Maybe worth having that section hand scored???? Although, I thought I erased completely so may not change anything.

i thought about a bubbling error as well...i know in both PS and BS i had to go and erase large sections b/c i was one question off. but i'm not sure if it would make a difference to have it hand scored. i feel like if it were really that far off, i woudl have had a score much lower than 8.

Hey I am in an accelerated MD program which means that if I get a 27, then I am automatically enrolled into an affiliated Medical School, in this case, Drexel Medical College.

However, I have scored a 35(12 11 12)P, and was wondering if you guys thought its worth applying to a better/cheaper medical school, particularly Robert Wood Johnson (16k cheaper a year).

I have a 3.95 GPA and have extensive research but no volunteering.

My research:

-STAR program research-Stipend for research in Nanotech
-Lab Assistant for Department of Materials (Nanotech)
-Internship at Johnson n Johnson-Clinical Research Management

As you can see I have research in the biotech and clinicial research fields...

You think I am good enough to make it to a better school or should I stay put?

Also, I am not sure if I can get strong reccomendations...

Thanks!

point taken. im really tempted to retake with my 31S to raise my verbal to a repsectable level. But my real goal was to get around a 30 so i could get into a special masters program, which i did already. I guess ill wow adcoms through the grades i get there in medical biochem and medical physiology, apparently adcoms think its one of the few classes that truly determine how successful you will be in med school. What are everyones plans for now?

This may seem like a stupid question, but what the heck is adcoms?

True about the re-score, except if some of your choices wern't erased completely. But I think people like us would have made sure of that at the time. So who knows. The only reason I would consider a rescore is if gaining a few more questions right would bump me to an 8. This may get me past some filters. Do some schools actively filter out 7's on a section?

I have a friend who went through the same thing. She needed a 28 to stay in her program (boston university) and ended up getting a 34 (this was last April). For her it made a lot of sense to apply to another school since BU is ridiculously expensive. B/c of some other circumstances, they (BU) didn't give her a hard time about leaving the program. However, I know those programs often claim to blacklist people who drop out of the program (not sure how they do that exactly, but maybe they save your recommendation letter for the end, or make a big point about you dropping the program in the letter). I'm not sure...I think you would have to talk to your program specifically.

I ended up with a 33Q, a 9-11-13 split. Will the 9 ruin any chance for me at t some ivy leagues, such as Columbia?

Unfortunately, I have no idea whether or not schools have a minimum threshold on each individual section. I'm sure somebody on this forum does though! I don't know about the re-score option...does anybody know if you have anything to lose by it? Is it possible to end up with a lower score if that is what they find? Or will they only bump you up if they find an error? Some things to think about before starting down that path...

I really don't think so. You have a very nice score. Be proud! Some ivy leagues have averages in the 11 or 12 range for each section. But that means they still accept lower.

Good job!! I think you will be fine. As Haemulon said...if 11 is the average for a particular section, then half of the admitted students have less than that. So I say go for it! 😀

You can end up with a lower score. I'm not actively considering it, just an idea. I have heard that 27 or higher with no one section lwer than 8 is considered good/competitive for many schools. Since mine is a 30, but with PS as a 7, its a little bit of limbo land. However, I am feeling more and more confident all the time now (especially after talking on SDN). I have a meeting with an undergradt pre-med advisor tomorrow and have put in messages to some other prof's for advice too.

Well it's bittersweet but here it is:

PS: 11 VR: 8 BS: 14

so...33P when it's all said and done...I challenge someone to have a more messed up distribution.

I'm a little late in the posting process (Couldn't bring myself to check last night)

35Q

13 - PS
12 - V
10 - BS
Q - WS

1. Form EG
2. I only took one practice and made a 31
3. EK books and Audio Osmosis for 5 months
4. I am beyond thrilled with this. I was afraid to check because I didn't want to start studying again for August (ruin a good nights sleep before work). I knew BS was going to be my lowest since I'm a non-trad and have only had one biology class in 10 years.

Some of you already know my score from chat, but for completeness of this thread:
Score: 39O
Verbal: 12
Phys: 14
Bio: 13

Details

1. Your Form: Don't remember (I think FH)

2. Your Practice Score Range: 24 on diagnostic, 27 on first practice fl, 30-33 Kaplan fls 2-5. 36 on AAMC 9

3. What you used to Study:
Kaplan lecture+online (practice tests flash cards, QBank etc.)

4. How do you feel right now?
Unreal. Was hoping to God for >36, was not expecting. HI-OOOOOOO!

Nice to see pretty much everybody was happy with their scores, hope you all get into your first choice!

Score: 41P
Verbal: 13
Phys: 14
Bio: 14

1. Your Form: BQ
2. Your Practice Score Range: 37, 39, and 41 on AAMC 5, 8, & 7.
3. What you used to Study: EK study guide plus the EK 1001 questions
4. How do you feel right now? Pretty hungover. I felt great last night though.

I haven't posted much (mostly just lurked to help manage my anxiety the last month or so) but I think this is an important thread. Right after I took the exam I found the 2005 version of this thread and it helped allay some of my fears. The simple truth is that it is very hard to realistically predict how you did after the actual exam. There are experimental questions so the amount you can miss is different than on the practices plus you are super dialed in during the actual exam plus a bunch of other factors. I barely slept the night before the exam and was anxious all day and left feeling beaten up in a way that I never did after my practices. And I read on the 2005 thread that everybody feels that way and you should trust in your practice scores to be the best predictor. I didn't believe it though, but I wish now that I had. So to the next set of students that take the exam and are freaking out and find this thread: try to relax - you probably scored in line with your practices exams.

Also, I think just the EK books without the course is great preparation if you really learn the material (although I didn't do any of the in-class 30 minutes exams (no time and too hard)). I wish I had started doing the AAMC exams earlier and had done all of them (there is no substitute for practice) but I found the 1001 books to be really helpful and don't regret spending the time to do all of them. Good luck and congratulations to all the score posters - I'm happy to see that so many people got the scores they needed.

Is it me, or am i the only one feeling mediocre sitting here in the forums with a 31S with folks complaining that they will have to retest in august with a score thats like a 34. Are SDN folks superachievers and of the highest caliber in the country with supreme expectations or is the country nowdays becoming more genius and I'm sitting here in the mediocre crowd lol. someone shed some light damn you!!! 🙂

 I so know what you mean, at first I was estatic, but then I came on SDN, and I was like holy crap I am a looooooossseeeeer lol. But its all good, we worked hard and got a good score🙂 Hopefully this time next year we will be talking about "which school to pick :luck: "

If I was a gunner I would retake it....psh yeah right, this hell is over hehe.

Score: 33P
Verbal: 13
Phys: 09
Bio: 11

Details

1. Your Form: EC

2. Your Practice Score Range: I was running in the high 20's to low 30's.

3. What you used to Study:
I used several things, but I have to give Exam Krackers most of the credit on this one.

4. How do you feel right now?
I am very happy. Given my previous score of 27, a 33 is looking VERY good. What will be really difficult for me this time is choosing which schools are still "reach" schools and which ones I can realistically apply to. Last time I applied to 17, most of which turned out to be reaching. This time I'm just not sure. I'll probably make a thread for it once I get back from Paris (yes, I'm writing this, receiving my score, and celebrating from Paris), but does anyone have some suggestions for "good" schools which I should definitely apply to with a 33P and a 3.95 GPA? All options are open as far as I'm concerned. Thanks!

I am looking at my score---11PS..8VR....11BS....I am really thankful for my score, but I just wish I got that 9 in VR hehe...

35Q

PS: 10
VR: 12
BS: 13

1. Your Form (If you remember): BR
2. Your Practice Score Range: 32-42 (Nothing lower than 34 after I caught up on material).
3. What you used to Study: Kaplan classroom course + AAMC practice tests + physics textbook since I haven't taken physics 2 yet.
4. How do you feel right now? Mostly good. I realize that this is a very good score, but it is a little below my average and I'd hoped for pure domination to make up for other areas of my app that I think are on the mediocre side. But the bottom line is that I don't have to retake the beast, and for that I am thrilled!

By the way, I miss the Countdown thread already... Congratulations to everybody that got the scores they wanted (or better!) and to those who are disappointed, remember that SDN is not representative of med school applicants as a whole.

Great job Zimmie! Contrats! I miss the Countdown too 🙁

I never posted my info in the "traditional format", though I have been on here talking with people about it. So here it goes.

30R
VR = 13
PS = 7
BS = 10

1. Form: CN (I think)
2. Practice score range: none. I never took a full practice test.
3. What you used to study: a couple of MCAT review guides bought from B&N and my old text books.
4. How do you feel right now? Feeling pretty good. Dissappointed in my PS score of course. A little worried that it will filter me out of getting some of the secondaries/interviews that I may have gotten with a more balanced score. But I am very happy to have gotten a 30. Am especially pleased with VR and WS as these are usually very hard to improve. Debating a re-take, but I think i'm gonna go for it with what I have.

You have every right to be ecstatic with that MCAT score, DrV. I'm very proud of you. 😍

A little advice to those of you who are feeling like your high 20s and low 30s aren't "good enough": This process is very difficult and humbling for all of us, and dealing with the hit to our egos is one of the hardest parts. We all like the feeling of being the best, and sometimes it's hard to accept that we're all average at some things. (I will confess that I'm a pretty average chemist, and a below-average marathon runner.) But you have to be a big enough person to put your ego aside now, and recognize that the other pre-meds you're applying to med school with are super-talented, just like you are. Most of us were big fish in small ponds in high school, and some of us were in college too. But grad school/med school is a whole 'nother game, because everyone there is outstanding. Judging yourself by how you measure up against others is always going to be a losing proposition for you; we all have different strengths and weaknesses, and someone, somewhere is bound to to be just as good as you are if not better in any category you can think of. So try to focus instead on competing with yourself. Work on making yourself the best applicant, the best medical student, the best physician, the best human being, that YOU can be. None of us is perfect, and we remain works in progress for our entire lives; we can always continue to improve ourselves more. If you are able to look back at your life and feel satisfied that you have worked hard, made a difference, and reached your potential, then you are way luckier than most people.

Last but not least, don't forget about those who helped you through this process. Come back to the MCAT forum sometimes and help the younger students like you were helped. Good things come to those who do good things for others. 🙂

What you said about the hell being over is the main thing to keep in mind. Now get on with the application cycle.

hey,
congrats to all of you. it might just be me but it seems everyone on this forum got a really good score.

I ended up with a 36R:
BS: 11
PS: 13
VR: 12

1. Your Form (If you remember): nope

2. Your Practice Score Range: 24 (diagnostic) - 29 best kaplan (never could finish their physical science section on time)

3. What you used to Study: kaplan classes

4. How do you feel right now????? pretty pumped and suprised, now i think i can actually apply to med school (2 days ago i was planning on taking a year off)

me too!!! I got a 31, not thrilled, but I refuse to tackle that test again. Anyway, I have talked to someone on an adcom at a top med school who said that a 31 will be competitve at many programs. I have a 3.5 UG GPA in Biochemistry from U of M and a 3.8 GPA in my M.S. in Biochemistry and the adcom member knows this info. A 30 or 31 is a good (if not thrilling)score   to us!!

DrVN we may end up being classmates in Chicago 🙂

I have a 3.5 UG GPA in Biochemistry from U of M and a 3.8 GPA in my M.S. in Biochemistry and the adcom member knows this info. A 30 or 31 is a good (if not thrilling)score   to us!!

DrVN we may end up being classmates in Chicago 🙂

Exactly! Way to go!

Hello all. I just checked my score:

series: 31
Verbal: 12
Physical: 12
Writing: M
Biological: 11

What does the "series" entry mean? Did I get a 31 or a 35?

did anyone else find it disturbing that this person got a 35 and asked this question?
