Congrats y'all! This is kinda random but does anyone know approximately when orientation starts (like what month)?

Congrats y'all! This is kinda random but does anyone know approximately when orientation starts (like what month)?

Your orientation should be August 16-18. There will be happy hours and mixers hosted each night. ASDA will be making a document soon for new students once our semester wraps up and we have more free time

Question:

Should I live at home and commute (25-30 minutes) to school or would I be better off finding an apartment in the city?

It sounds like UMB students are close and I don't want to miss out by living at home.

Sorry this is a random question that I'm probably overthinking...Does anybody know how strict Maryland is about GPA after getting accepted? What do you think would constitute an offer getting rescinded? No C's, but significantly lower GPA for this semester than my average for the previous years (1 B- and multiple B's and an A- this semester), although it won't more than a ~0.4 decrease for my overall GPA. I am too nervous to call and ask myself for obvious reasons

I'm in the same boat as you..I live about 30 mins (without traffic) from UMB. My parents really want me to commute because it would save a lot of money, but I'm a little hesitant about driving back and forth every day.

I'm considering staying in the city for the first year at the very least to get better adjusted to things, then proceed from there.

I was considering the opposite actually.
I'm not worried about the commute time because it would be 30 minutes in the car Vs. however long it would take to walk (or drive?) from an apartment or townhome.

However, I am worried about missing out on building a solid relationship with other students in our class by living outside of the city.

Most students live a 10-15 minute walk from school (downtown, ridgleys delight, barre circle, pigtown, camden court) or take the campus shuttle from fed hill. A lot of D1s live in the student housing, but I personally think it is expensive.

If you are a young, single adult: move to the city and make friends with your classmates.
Have a family, wife and kids: commute

Either way you will be here all the time, it is just essier to hang with people when you are nearby. Plus traffic sucks and being late is not okay, especially for exams and labs

You should be okay. There is no reason to contact the school. they will get a copy of your grades when you update it. If you change your spring coursework, send an email. DO NOT CALL

On a related note, do students who have recently graduated need to send in their final transcripts again? I already did it once for the general application process and nothing has changed since.

I do not believe you need to do so if there has not been a change in your GPA/courses.

Hey guys. Long time lurker, 1st time posting. Thanks for all the great feedback fellow SDN'ers! I don't wish to turn this into a School A vs. School B thread, but I have done a TON of research and most of the posts are from several years ago or simply don't delve deep enough into the facts. I also feel that this post will stimulate some chat about the school, which in turn can potentially benefit everyone reading. I have been fortunate enough to receive acceptances from Maryland and my state school, Buffalo (NY resident...I live on Long Island). I am having a hard time deciding between these two awesome programs. I LOVED my interview day at Maryland. The school is awesome. The people seemed happy. I interviewed with the Head Honcho herself, Dr. Porter. She was great. My dad and I got to check out the aquarium and 2 restaurants while in Baltimore. The whole experience was wonderful. I like the fact that the school is 4 hours from home, as opposed to 7 hours. A huge selling point is Mediasite and how organized MD is with digitally archiving lectures. Feeling under the weather or perhaps there's 2 feet of snow outside? No problem! Catch up on what you missed on your computer. I don't hate the cold, but from what I understand, Buffalo gets harsh winters. I don't necessarily mind the slightly larger class size MD has compared to Buffalo. I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around the price difference. I ran the numbers and I figure MD to be approx. $70k more expensive than Buffalo (over the course of 4 years) and that's considering I get in-state residency after my 1st year. Prob looking at closer to $100k difference if I were to get it after year 2. This is some serious cheddar and I should also note that I am an untraditional applicant in my early 30s. Most people claim that cost should be the number 1 factor. Others say to go where you'll be happy. I am not emotionally connected to either Buffalo or MD...I had positive interview experiences at both schools and I am not really swaying strongly towards either school. I like the more suburban feel of Buffalo (being from LI) and having my car would be a plus...but I think I could get used to a city like Baltimore. I know it ultimately comes down to what my preferences are, as both are great programs. Apparently, UB is undergoing some major renovations to their clinic as well (which I would likely benefit from). I was just hoping for some feedback from those who are possibly in a similar situation. Thanks so much!

@Evolver311 UMB is about 45-55k a year when looking at tutition and fees

COL is approx 15-20k. Most people have a car and if you live in a house, you should get $20 parking

Thanks so much for the reply! Would you mind telling me how you came up with those numbers ($45-55k per year)? According to their website http://www.umaryland.edu/media/umb/af/sa/DDS.pdf, it seems to indicate that tuition is approximately $35k/year for IS and approximately $65k/year for OOS. On a handout that was given to us on the interview day, there is a slide that says "Cost of Attendance is $113,994/yr for non-residents and $81,037/yr for residents." I figure Buffalo to cost roughly $290k for the 4 years and according to Maryland's handout, the COA will be roughly $360k (considering I get IS after my 1st year).

@Evolver311 these are the numbers I provided to another prospective student
Assuming 15K/yr cost of living...60K for all 4 yrs cost of living (credit due to @umbtoothfairy )

Total Cost of Attendance if IN-STATE after D1: $288,226
Total Cost of Attendance if IN-STATE after D2: $322,137
Total Cost of Attendance if OOS all 4 years: $382,279

From my interviews with multiple UMB students, it's very possible to get IS after D1, and virtually everyone who tries gets it after D2.

@umbtoothfairy feel free to fact-check me if I made a mistake.

Numbers I used for tuition and fees:
D1: OOS $82,559.80.
D2: OOS $81,543.80. IS $47,633.00
D3: OOS $79,196.80. IS $48,830.80
D4: OOS $78,978.80. IS $49,202.80.

For cost of living, I assumed a flat $15K/yr ($60K over 4 yrs- again thanks to @umbtoothfairy ) and added to the configurations from the numbers above.

I am a third year student and know how much and which fees to count. I did not include health insurance in these numbers

Please be advised the above numbers DO include all fees as listed in the tuition/fees schedule published by UMD, to include ancillary fees like health insurance. Your ASDA participation fee, etc. are also built into this number.

You provided the cost of living estimate ($60K for 4 years) and a similar total cost of attendance estimate without certain fees like health insurance, but I wanted to give everyone the "worst case scenario" so to speak, and I included everything I could when conducting my review. Only thing missing from the COA is the licensing exam I believe (CDCA ADEX). The "worst case scenario" approach is also why I calculated the options of IS after 1 yr, 2 yrs, and not at all.

Tl;dr for the rest of you- if you won't need health insurance from Maryland, you can take off a decent amount from that bill.

Thanks again for the response and outlining some of the costs. I just got off the phone with a nice woman in financial aid and we went over the numbers in greater detail. She estimates that the COA will be ballpark $360k for the 4 years considering I get IS after D1 year. She also said that obtaining residency after D2 year is more the norm than receiving it after D1 year. The numbers I reviewed with the financial aid rep (as well as the ones provided to us at the interview day) are just very different than the numbers in your outline. Again, I thank you for your help! But I'm confused as to who's projection is more accurate...

@Evolver311 I am telling you from experience that it is not 360k. The average student in 2016 graduated with around 228k of debt. Yes, some are on the higher higher end, but their COL is usually much higher due to providing for a family versus single person on loans alone.
Overall most students I know who apply get IS after d1 year. This was not always the case, but it is becoming easier each year

Did she happen to have an estimate for you assuming IS after D2?

The post of mine that the UMD student quoted was generated after I went through their published tuition and fees schedule.

However, my calculation does have its limitations - it does not account for tuition increases, interest on loans, other expenses like the CDCA ADEX, etc.

You mentioned you discussed the numbers in great detail- could you please share the breakdown of cost of attendance if the financial aid counselor gave you one?

Surprisingly, the financial aid rep estimated somewhere in the mid 4's considering IS after D2 year...wow. We pretty much just reviewed this document http://www.umaryland.edu/media/umb/af/sa/DDS.pdf in detail and she said everything listed is concrete except we can likely omit the "hospitalization insurance" fees. There's such a huge discrepancy between the numbers listed on their website compared to the numbers the D3 student provided. I understand that COA will vary from person to person, but I'm figuring close to a $130k discrepancy between the 2 sources...

Any current students care to share what really drew them to Maryland? I know what I loved about the short interview day, but I'd love to hear what some students really like (or dislike) about the program. Thanks so much!

I would most definitely trust the financial aid rep over people on SDN....yes the AVERAGE cost will be lower because some people have military scholarships, parents helping them pay for school, use their parents health insurance, etc.

First of all, good on you for investigating this yourself and being so proactive.

Interesting. That's the exact document I combed through to arrive at my much cheaper estimates, but I didn't account for tuition increases, interest on loans, etc. so maybe that is where I went wrong. Perhaps the financial aid officer is taking all of that into account to give you the most accurate picture.

I agree with @drcrentistdds - you should trust the Maryland financial aid officer's word over my calculations that were quoted above. It is the Financial Aid Officer's job to handle loan packages and they know the cost of attendance cold. The average cost of attendance may be lower than what it will be for you because about 50% of Maryland's class has in state tuition due to Maryland residency in D1 itself. Maryland also gives out large merit scholarships.

I just reviewed the document and did my own calculation. Assuming you get in-state residency after D1, the cost I calculated is $228,961.20 (which includes all the optional insurance costs). If you get residency after D2, my calculated cost was $259,327.20. If you add the estimated $60,000 cost of living for all 4 years, that adds to a total of $288,961.20 and $319,327.20 respectively. These are almost exactly the same numbers @umbtoothfairy calculated.

Unless both of our math is off, I don't see where the financial aid rep is getting her numbers from..maybe she took extraneous costs not mentioned in the document into account

I'm still curious about how y'all calculated 60k for cost of living....personally I couldn't live a whole year on 15k --between rent, utilities, car insurance, cell phone bill, food, etc, even if you are being real frugal that seems low

I'm not the one who came up with that estimate so I wouldn't know how they got it..but it does seem to be modest.

Assuming a 10-month lease: 10×$1000/month (not exactly sure on rent costs in Baltimore) = $10,000

$5,000/yr for everything else seems reasonable, but obviously this can vary person-to-person

In undergrad, did you ever use the entire amount alloted for books? You likely will not use it at Maryland due to our technology. Same thing with the suggested 2k for travel.

My rent is around 700 per month in a 4 bed, 2 bath townhouse. That is low: my parents help with cell, health/car insurance. I realize 15k is very low: 1 budget 1k per month plus 3k misc. 20k should be more than enough in my opinion. Unless you live alone, rent is generally 700-1200 per person. You can get lucky with 1 bedroom houses for that at times. On campus housing is 750-950 minimum.
For your col: look at some apartments in the area, figure out how much you will need to eat, survive, bills, etc. Then add 3k for misc purchases like loupes, conferences, whatever you want for wiggle room. If you live far away and plan to visit your family, account for that as well.

If you do not take out the entire suggested grad PLUS loan, that suggested total number will also be reduced. You can and should return excess money before the end of the semester.
While I get that financial aid may "know more," they don't experience it and thus don't know much expensive or inexpensive different things are *cough* books.

Hey! One of your future classmates made a facebook group. Current students will also join to answer any questions you have following acceptance. Please feel free to join 🙂

Since people are starting to send in their deposits, I thought it would be a good time to bump this post

The group is pretty dead so far haha, let's try to change that

WE WILL MAKE THIS THREAD GREAT AGAIN!

He's flip-flopping till April when he can't flip no mo. Tomorrow he's gonna be all in at Pitt.

Just reflecting - I'm so grateful for the acceptances I got, but I can't hold multiple seats (it's not fair to other applicants, and it is too expensive)

When does UMDSoD conduct interviews from what month to what month cuz it is not mentioned in their website?

When does UMDSoD conduct interviews from what month to what month cuz it is not mentioned in their website?

We started in September I believe. I suspect it goes on until the class is filled (approximately 135 students).

Roughly even numbers of OOS and IS.

when does the interview period end?

It goes on through February. With the due date for the first deposit coming up, that will open up a few seats.

If you haven't heard back from them for an interview, keep your hopes up..and don't start panicking just yet

There are still interviews in March before spring break if needed. Second deposit is in April

Just wondering if anyone has received a confirmation email regarding their deposit/seat reservation?
