You scared me...Can u guys tell me how DPC test thing works? How to study if I want to pass 🙂? Could you please give me some adice on that?

Don't worry about the tests, worry about learning it right the first time around, hang out with motivated people, things will fall in place.

yeah, exactly...see my post in response to "how to get A's"...the one about forgetting about it and just learning the ****.

oh, and yes, hi nvshelat. ;-) see what happens to me when left alone with no schedule and an apartment full of booze?

So, how is attendance being taken next year?
What if you come late to a class?
Are they going to tell us this or make us figure it out?

Guess we will be informed at orientation. From what was said at the last class meeting it will be clicker quizzes for attendance so being late or going outside for a smoke while the quiz is underway would be an absence unless they decide to use another system.

The student handbook that came out July 2nd does not give details but states attendance will be tracked with at least 80% needed for classes and 90% for labs.

I would encourage everyone to consider DPC. Lecture based is going to mandatory attendance next year. DPC meets 3x/week, but the meetings are much shorter than an entire lecture based class day. Also, it appears that it's either not possible or just really difficult to fail out of DPC; in lecture based we had a good amount of people who couldn't cut it. DPC people don't have to pass each test; I think they just average all their exams for the entire year or something?

I'm told that DPCers have essay exams. No thanks!!!!

And they said the clicker quizzes were anonymous lol

Personally, I think this attendence thing is just a threat. Do you guys really see people like Hallas, Elkowitz, and the clinicians that come in to give 1 or 2 lectures giving us clicker quizes? Also, didn't 2009's batteries all die by the begining of their second year? And we were told that the clickers were anonymous (although I do remember someone writing down the serial numbers on the clickers next to our names at orientation last year). But think about it, other than Dixon, Kumar and Hill, what professor is going to give us a quiz? I see maybe 25% of the faculty giving us these quizes. That means that people who stream have to be sure they're there for those professors lectures. +pity+

my thoughts EXACTLY
our profs are way too busy/lazy to make up quizzes every day

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they are treating us like children? its med school, not high school or even undergrad. Come on.
Why cant it just be required attendance for people who arent doing so well.

I am pretty sure it will just be a threat, realistically only SOME lecturers will quiz but you wont know who so you will have to come to all.

So is anyone studying anything this summer???

So I'm trekin out to Forest Hills/Kew/Rego this weekend to look for places... any advice? Hit up Craigslist and doing the by owner thing, but in terms of specific areas within those parts of the neighborhood, anything to avoid, etc?

Avoid Dakota Realty. Wasted about 1.5 months with their bait&switch BS because I am foolish to think everyone is honest.

Craigslist is good and talking to doormen as well. Can't think of anything to avoid but be aware parking can suck when you try to park at night or when it rains/snows so consider renting a parking spot if it is in your budget.

We ended up using Kraham (718 275-0600) realty and moved into my apartment within 3 days of walking into the office. They have a lot of rent controlled apts if you are into that.

Dakota is the devil. and ardor lies about holdings, and slips in fees. i used CoOp Connection on Queens Blvd and 75th, and they were great. had a lease in 2 days from hiring them, fees reasonable.

doormen is a good idea, CL works. there are no "bad" areas in terms of safety in these hoods, and as with any neighhborhood some buildings are good and some are dismal. obviously don't take anything sight unseen. i managed w/o a parking spot for about 5 months while i was on a waitlist and it wasn't that bad.

Just wanted to add a few things.

1) Friend of mine lives in Forest Hills and he got his place by talking to the doorman since there was an on-site office that privately shows their apartments.

2) Streets usually have an Ave, Drive, and Road associated with it. So when looking for 65th Rd. be aware you may have to go past 65th Ave and 65th Drive. Also if you are trying to live close to an express MTA train on 71st Ave (or 75th Ave) you will want to know that 65th Ave is NOT six blocks away from 71st Ave. I think the whole Ave/rd/Drive business may end as you go above 71st (72nd, 73rd,etc.) but I forget where.

3)As noonday stated no bad areas. If you live on the South side of Queens Blvd be aware that is where the LIRR is located. You may want to hang out in the bedroom and listen to a couple trains go by to see if you could handle that. They like to blare their horns for whatever reason. Parking is not easier on this side and the rent seemed to be about the same as the north side of Queens Blvd.

You guys think it'll be okay to go through owners instead of realtors?

Hi,

As HG said, be careful of places that are on the north side of QB. The LIRR tracks are there and they can get quite loud.

If you want to be close to the trains, try to find a place around 70th road for the E,F,R,G,V or 75th for the F or 67th st for the R,V,G.

There's no real bad areas in FH, but towards the LIE (rego park) it does get a bit seedier.

Parking is a bigtime pain in the ass in FH so I suggest trying to get a parking spot in a building if it's offered.

Hope this helps!

Stafford didn't cover all of my tuition this year as it did last year (about 1795 difference). Anyone else? I'm attributing this to me getting health insurance through the school this year, and also the tuition increase.

Also, anyone notice that the Grad Plus lenders are different this year? I went with EdAmerica b/c I didn't see Nellie Mae - did NYCOM dump Sallie Mae b/c of the whole corruption scandal?

In other news, we're applying for a place in Kew Gardens!! It's on 120th st/85th ave, just a couple blocks south of metropolitan ave and just east of forest park. It seems like a really nice area, we're keeping our fingers crossed 🙂

As far as I know they did not drop Sallie May. I got letter from them a week ago.

Good luck. Hoping you get a nice smooth move in as well.

I think the last time they raised stafford loan limits was in 99. Maybe the next president will help the students. 🙁

anyone know to which address we are supposed to send the registration form that we got in our email today from arlene wilkins?

thanx

Is anyone else liking our schedule so far?

We have an extra week off this year for december break AND we don't have any studying to worry about!!!

That is much better than last year when we had to deal with neuro during our time off.

We're also done on may 12 which is nice.

This schedule so far seems fairer than last year...

what's the deal with 50% OMM quiz grade though...that doesn't sound so hot...

pretty sweet schedule. glad exams are not every 2 weeks especially in the last few months!

50% quiz probably so people don't abuse the 80% attendance.

All the more reason for the DPC administration to give us some sort of major exam after break... I can see it now..🙁

I'm pretty happy with the schedule, especially that we actually have a winter break where we don't have to study. It would have been nice to have an exam before thanksgiving but if I had to choose between that and Christmas I'd pick Christmas.

Is anyone going to San Diego for the AOA convention in October? I'm thinking that I might just go to the Caribbean or something for those few days instead of cramming 6 people into a hotel room built for 3 again.

Oh, and does anyone know how Cardio. and Resp. are going to work? Will we have Cardio. lectures and Resp. lectures and have like 50 questions of each on the exam or is it all mixed up?

Is the owner obligated to put up security guards if the tenant asks, or only if there is a child in the apt?

while we're at housing law...

1.) how much is a landlord allowed to increase your rent?

2.) are they allowed to demand more security deposit?

3.) can they change lease terms at renewal (wrt pets)?

this website may help, http://www.tenant.net/

specifically: http://www.tenant.net/Rights/CTRC/index.html

i couldn't find an exact percentage, but i believe AT WORST it to be 20%, due some flaw in the rent law. but from what i've been reading about 9% seems right.

What address are you guys sending this registration form to??
It was sent to us in our email from arlene wilkins

I am getting spammed by Sallie Mae to consolidate my loans from the 2006-2007 school year. As I understood it, it is no longer beneficial to consilidate after the changes regarding student loan interest rates were made in summer of 2006. Am I correct? I consolidated everything prior to that. Thanks!

Just wanted to mention to anyone renewing their lease and getting a rent increase that you could easily call your landlord or write them a letter requesting that they do not increase your rent or reduce the increase. If you are a tenant that pays on time or never ask for anything you should mention that as well.

If the landlord raises your rent at least $50 each year things get out of hand in a few years time especially since some jobs don't give automatic raises each year. Your landlord will raise your rent the maximum unless you say something about it. That's just business. Your landlord knows that if you move because of a rent increase to get $600/yr and the apartment is vacant for only 2 weeks he just lost his profit if the rent is $1200/month. This does not include money (redoing floors, bathroom, painting, etc.) to fix up the place for a new tenant.

Landlords have to deal with tenants that are late on paying, complain about everything, cause other tenants to complain because of being noisy or whatever, DON'T pay, etc. If you consider yourself a good tenant you are valuable and should speak up.

The last place I lived I asked the landlord to not raise my rent $75 after 3 previous increases of $50+ and he said ok the same day. Of course the number of previous rent increases and the prospects of you being a long time tenant helps the process. YMMV.

I got an email from Sallie Mae asking me to fill out another GRAD PLUS application online after filling one out from EdAmerica (and getting a letter from them saying I was pre-approved). I called the FAO and they said Sallie Mae was spamming me and not to apply again, lest I receive 2x the amount I requested originally. Beware!

In re to your question, I believe you're correct; the rates are too high right now to consolidate.

While we're talking FA, anyone paying off interest throughout these years?

If you waived nycom's insurance last year do you need to waive it again or are you automatically not enrolled. Does anyone know?

I just emailed Dominic about an hour ago and he said that if you waived it last year you don't have to waive it again this year.

Half of what you asked for from gradplus now, the other half in January. Then what ever you asked for from fafsa minus tuition, insurance and fees. You will get half of what's left with your first gradplus check, and the second half with your second gradplus check.

hey does anyone know if we have anatomy lab and practical exams this year?? I really wanna find out...

I emailed Dr Hallas in April and he said there would not be any practicals since we covered every system, but there would be anatomy questions on our written exams.

not what i heard...

according to my sources, there will be anatomy labs this year...that the pro-sectons on those last few exams were "intro/warm-up" to those systems...

I'm only discussing lab practicals not lab sessions.

We are definitely having lab sessions, but from what I understood no anatomy lab exams/practicals. Written exams will have anatomy questions for that system. Things change though.

Hey guys🙂 I have couple of questions..is it really cold in the classrooms?? and...what to wear on orientation day? Can I wear jeans??? What about this freshman send off on August 12 ? Did u guys have that before? What is it all about?

Are they going to tell us when DPC classes going to meet during orientation day??

Thanks a lot!!!!

Wait, we're going to have anatomy labs? Is it going to be scheduled or kind of like last year where you can come and go as you please?

Considering we "finished" anatomy last year I think it would be ridiculous for them to require us to be there again. Most medical schools do anatomy in like 12 weeks during the first year and don't revisit it again. They're stressing anatomy way too much at NYCOM. It's low yield on the boards. We don't need 2 years of anatomy. It's medical school, none of us are going for PhDs in anatomy.

There will be anatomy labs, where we go into more detail. There will not be practicals, but will be questions on the written. First years will be having anatomy about twice per week, but will finish most by 1/2 thru the year, only have neuro anatomy to do the 2nd half. This will be rough on the anatomy staff as they will have to teach 4 times/week for 1st years.

I just spoke with a friend of mine from Emory that took the boards and said there was a whole slew of anatomy questions. The boards vary; some ppl get a ton of embryo questions, others a ton of histo and cell bio.. the only thing that seems to remain constant is a high % of path, phys, and microbio qtns.

I actually like the idea - it will be good for the 1st years to get it all out of the way early on, like most med schools have it. And I could use a refresher thats for sure.
