Hi All-
I called Taryn Croot to get some information.
Regarding web board access this morning Taryn and her associates proofed a letter that will be sent to all committed NYCOM students explaining how to access and use the web board. This letter will be mailed in the next week or so (hopefully) and will allow us to see the web board very shortly. However, as of right now, we will only be able to SEE the postings on the web board; we will not be able to post on the web board until Orientation. This allows us to see what current NYCOM students post regarding apartments they are giving up and roommates they need, but it will not allow us to post our desires for a roommate or particular apartment. We also will not be able to post questions. You will only be able to view the web board at this time. During Orientation is when they will give us a password and allow us to then post on the web board.
Regarding apartment hunting there are many options here. One, you can always contact Ryan. He is a real estate agent who can show you around the area and some available apartments and house shares. Two, you can always check out Craigs List (www.craigslist.com), Newsday online (www.newsday.com), or the Penny Saver for apartments. With all of those options, you can find apartments by yourself or through a realtor, but, keep in mind, finding an apartment through a realtor requires you to pay a broker fee of one months rent usually. It ups the cost of moving a lot. However, each of those sites do have people posting private ads for apartments they are renting. Third, you can find a realtor in the yellow pages and have him/her show you around.
Some areas to consider, for those of you from far away, are Glen Cove, Westbury, Sea Cliff, Bayville, East Meadow, Levittown, Bethpage, Syosett, Plainview, Hicksville, Jericho, Little Neck, Bayside, and other towns in Queens on the eastern border. There are pros and cons to all of the areas, including distance from school, price of apartments, availability, travel time, and the potential for pets, if you are a pet owner. I found an apartment in Glen Cove that is 4.2 miles from school and allows cats using Craigs List, and I did not have to pay a realtors fee. However, I looked in every single one of those towns in every possible price range you can imagine.
If I can be of any more help for any of you regarding either topic, feel free to contact me. I am moving May 18th and finishing up finals right now, so, if there is a delay in responding, I apologize ahead of time.
Take care,
Shannon
