Hi All-

I called Taryn Croot to get some information.

Regarding web board access – this morning Taryn and her associates proofed a letter that will be sent to all committed NYCOM students explaining how to access and use the web board. This letter will be mailed in the next week or so (hopefully) and will allow us to see the web board very shortly. However, as of right now, we will only be able to SEE the postings on the web board; we will not be able to post on the web board until Orientation. This allows us to see what current NYCOM students post regarding apartments they are giving up and roommates they need, but it will not allow us to post our desires for a roommate or particular apartment. We also will not be able to post questions. You will only be able to view the web board at this time. During Orientation is when they will give us a password and allow us to then post on the web board.

Regarding apartment hunting – there are many options here. One, you can always contact Ryan. He is a real estate agent who can show you around the area and some available apartments and house shares. Two, you can always check out Craig’s List (www.craigslist.com), Newsday online (www.newsday.com), or the Penny Saver for apartments. With all of those options, you can find apartments by yourself or through a realtor, but, keep in mind, finding an apartment through a realtor requires you to pay a broker fee of one month’s rent usually. It ups the cost of moving a lot. However, each of those sites do have people posting private ads for apartments they are renting. Third, you can find a realtor in the yellow pages and have him/her show you around.

Some areas to consider, for those of you from far away, are Glen Cove, Westbury, Sea Cliff, Bayville, East Meadow, Levittown, Bethpage, Syosett, Plainview, Hicksville, Jericho, Little Neck, Bayside, and other towns in Queens on the eastern border. There are pros and cons to all of the areas, including distance from school, price of apartments, availability, travel time, and the potential for pets, if you are a pet owner. I found an apartment in Glen Cove that is 4.2 miles from school and allows cats using Craig’s List, and I did not have to pay a realtor’s fee. However, I looked in every single one of those towns in every possible price range you can imagine.

If I can be of any more help for any of you regarding either topic, feel free to contact me. I am moving May 18th and finishing up finals right now, so, if there is a delay in responding, I apologize ahead of time.

Take care,
Shannon

I'm currently a first year student at NYCOM in the traditional lecture based cirrculum. As of now 2 bedrooms are available in a 4 bedroom house in Westbury. Ideally located on a very quiet residential street in a good neighborhood. Walking distance to Dunkin Donuts and Westbury library. Takes about 10 minutes or so to NYCOM by car. Less than a mile or so to the Westbury train station. A perfect place to study and relax. Each floor has it's own bathroom and laundry is downstairs in the basement. Just remodeled the interior. Rent $600 plus utilities. Very reasonable for the area around NYCOM. Get it while is lasts b/c places that are reasonable are filled early, leaving basement apartments for $800 if you wait till August. Email me, Chris ([email protected]) and come see the place for yourself. Lease starts July 1st.

another logistics question.

wells fargo appears to have no bank branches in NY. what banks do people use and like? i'm looking at citibank and bank of americ in particular, since i have those here to can could switch banks in person before moving...

any experiences?

I have used Bank of America for about 2 years now, and I've been happy. I use online banking constantly and I've never had an issue. I know a lot of people who use Washington Mutual, since the bank provides free checking and savings accounts with no minimum balance required. Citibank, from my experience, usually requires minimum balances that may or may not be worthwhile but that's a person-by-person decision.

Hello fellow NYCOMERs. Nice to meet you all. Look forward to seeing you on August 21, 2006.

Nearest HSBC is 5 miles down south in Mineola. Around NYCOM, you have North Fork, Astoria, Citibank. I think Bank of America too.

Don't pay any fees to Citibank yet. My friend in NYCOM told me that Citibank offers free Checking/Savings account to NYCOM students (atleast they did last year). For now, stick to what you have and decide later on.

I believe there are quite a few Chase bank branches in the NYCOM area as well...

Congrats on your acceptance! I'm still waiting for mine 😉 ....
I was just wondering when you interviewed? I'm trying to get an idea of where they are in notifying people. I interviewed at the end of March and the admissions person told us 4 weeks....and now I'm hearing 8!!! Figured I'd ask you and try to get an idea of how far along they are in the process......thanks!!!

Anyone get their FA package yet??

Crystal, welcome!

Bunny, hang in there and good luck!

Is MedPrep something they offer to everyone or something they offer to people they think should take it. I've had my acceptance for over a month now and have given my deposit back and sent my transcripts in and gotten the DPC forms but I'm yet to get FA forms and haven't gotten anything regarding MedPrep. MedPrep people...do they send those right away?

Hi beachbunny,

I interviewed April 11th actually and I called the admissions office a week later to find out approx. when I would hear something back and they told me about 6-8 weeks... but that obviously wasn't the case in my situation. But I still think that you are right on target though.. cuz someone else I know heard back from them after 9 weeks!! I know, I know it's a long time but try not to think about it or worry too much.. since I wasn't expecting to hear anything til about mid-May I tried my best to push it out of my head and was completely shocked when I got the letter this weekend...

Also, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I was offered medprep. Since the program starts June 1st they probably sent out my letter a little sooner to give me a little time to prepare myself for this... just my thoughts! Either way, I know waiting sucks but I'm sure you'll hear something soon.. G'luck!!

Oh and gobiggreen,

I think medprep is for 'special' students.. yes that's right I'm special!! 😎 No.. I'm only kiddin' I think it's geared towards economically disadvantaged and/or minority students.. so unless you fall into that category then I guess it doesn't apply to you. Hopefully I'll have a chance to meet most of you before school starts though because I am planning on going to the May-social. Hope to see you there gobi!!!

Mine told me the same - I think it's a generic letter thats sent out to all. I'm guessing they just really want us to attend orientation stuff.

fron reading the letter it seems that they are talking about workshops during orientation. It seems you would have gotten a letter about medprep instead of an acceptance letter if you are given the medprep conditional acceptance.

I'm curious as to what the rest of you are doing about the suggested meningitis vaccine. On the immunization form we received soon after acceptance, you have to either state the date you had the vaccination done or waive your right to the meningitis shot.

I don't want to waive my right -- I would like to get it -- but the cheapest I could find is through the Travel Medicine clinic at the hospital where I work and it's $150 and insurance does NOT cover this at all. (same thing if I get it done through my primary care doc)

Are the rest of you getting the meningitis vaccine? If so, how much did you pay for it? And if not, why did you decide to forego it?

Just looking for advice before i blow the $150 🙂

thanks!

That's what *I* said too!! 😱

No, they don't cover it..... Not even a % of it, not even a discount. Isn't that annoying?? It's considered an elective vaccination (not required) so I guess that's why.

And I work for a MAJOR medical school/hospital/health system! I have really good coverage for everything else and even THEN they don't cover this...... 😡

Forgot to mention, I called the NYCOM clinic # listed on the immunization form -- they don't even offer the meningitis shot!! Neither do the free immunization clinics around NYC run by the DOH.... 😕

sucks. I spent an hour looking into this and found out the same. The mayor signed some damn thing saying we should be notified of dangers of meningitis and then does not bother to have it included in vaccinations in clinics. My school's health clinic claims it can be had for $75 from the CDC travel web page. I called some of them and the cheapest I found was $110. I emailed the director my undergrad clinic to locate a clinic that offers it for $75.

please understand that my undergrad Hunter College in NY claims on their immunization forms that the CDC Travel site has vaccines available for $75. There are about 25 clinics and calling 5 of them the cheapest I found was $110 so I emailed the head of my clinic to see if they know any in particular that I should call.

The CDC clinic page. look under Private Travel Medicine Clinic Sources:
http://www.cdc.gov/travel/travel_clinics.htm

I'm going to class now so I'm going to walk into the health clinic to see if anyone knows.

Hey guys,

I look forward to seeing some of you this saturday in New Hyde Park. I have a question about financial aide and renting an apartment. With the amount of loans we will borrow per year, say you get the max amount without any private loans; how much can one plan on spending on rent if loans will be their only source of "income". I have been looking around but am not sure how much I will be able to afford and I see that living is somewhat expensive in the long island area. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thanks,

NUKid

you would not be going to NYCOM in a couple of years.

The stafford loans(unsub and sub combined) is just enough to pay for our tuition for 1-2 years. Then we will need private loans to cover the projected increases. If you have nobody to pay your rent (family, spouse, etc.) You will need to take private loans or use savings to pay for housing. This is one reason that the financial aid rep told our interview group "If you have bad credit then NYCOM is not the school for you". Sorry, NYCOM is expensive just like NY.

hey....i was just wondering which lender is better for grad plus loan....anybody have some info/favor?

speaking of loans/aid...

i've taken care of all the other stuff, but have yet to hear from fin aid, though my fafsa's in. should i call? should i be trying to actively get loans at this point?

advice appreciated...

I sent in all my fin. aid. paperwork some time ago, and also signed the online MPN. I got in touch with the office and they let me know that once they have your FAFSA along with the stuff mentioned above, all you can really do is wait until you get your fin. aid. award letter in the mail, some time in July. So if you have done this, now its in their hands. This long of a wait worries me a bit too, so I plan on checking up witht he office every once in a while to make sure there is nothing else for me to do, but that's only because I am (a) paranoid (android).

Radiohead reference? 😎

But what about the grad plus loan, that is an alternative to private loans, so could that be used to cover housing expenses? I have no problem with private loans but would want to avoid them if possible...if not possible then I guess there is nothing I can do. I'm just trying to figure out how much I could afford for rent?? I realize that may be a personal issue depending on savings and such but without any major savings, how can you go about figuring out a good rent range?

Thanks Hunter!

I'm leaving for all of June and July on June 4th, and I would like to find a roommate by June 1st.

NO ONE will be able to beat your 2 minute commute or the ease of use. You will spend more time waiting for the stop light than the rest of your drive to school combined. 😛

I live at 16 Walnut St in Greenvale. Near the corner of Greenvale and Glen Cove Blvd

Pathmark grocery store and Starbucks? 1 block walk. 👍
School Pub (the Barefoot Peddler)? 1 Block walk. 👍
Kinkos and Post office? 1 Block walk. 👍
Good mechanic and Greenvale LIRR station? Park in front of your house and walk 3 blocks. 👍

It's one room in a two bedroom, a little of small, but adorable. Rent is $650 including gas. It's a year lease that starts July 1st.

Ideally I'm looking for a gal (don’t worry, I have a girlfriend), but I might settle for one of you super clean male types. No pets, no smoking, no mudwrestling, no trouble. Ideally no TV either, but that’s negotiable as I’m not around a whole lot except to sleep anyway.

Call me (516 669.6462) for your free tour.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum...just decided on NYCOM for the Fall. Going a bit crazy over this financial info stuff...just filled out FAFSA today. I heard that T.H.E. as a lender is a good option for both private and Stafford...anyone have any thoughts on this? Their website is www.northstar.org. They claim to have no fees on Stafford and private. Any help you guys can provide will be appreciated.
THank you!

Nishanie

I use T.H.E. as my lenderand I love them. Best deal on the market, non-profit and very good customer service by little old ladies with Fargo accents. It is rumored that you can't use them at NYCOM, but just make sure you ask to talk to Tom when you call F.A. and he will set you up. I think my reimbursment check took about 1 day longer to come than my friends using the preffered lenders.

Loans are making my head hurt. I plan to consolidate my undergrad loans by this Friday since the deadline is coming up. I went with NYCOM for stafford loans.
If you consolidate them, can they still be deferred while you're in school? Or will you have to start making payments on them right away?

I'm looking at the grad plus area of the site they gave us. It wasn't available before. It says on there that Edamerica has a fixed rate of 7.5%! That seems to be too good to be true when compared to the 8.5% of bank of america or nellie mae. Does Edamerica look like the best one to choose? I'm thinking there must be some catch...
