hey guys... welcome to nycom and congratulations!! I'm glad to see some fellow mma-ers looking to roll around. dont bother asking the faculty or anyone because they will definitely say no.

My name is Mike and I'm a 2nd year at NYCOM. As a matter of fact last year me and another student gathered a group together and started grappling session every tuesday at 6:30pm. the gym had some jigg-saw puzzle mats that were good for rolling around.

the only problem that occured was that newbie's wanted to come and learn bjj and therefore it turned into a teaching session....whichhh we don't have time for. sometimes they would show up and other times they wouldn't and they'd be lost the next time they came.

eventually we just allowed only people who knew how to grapple or who were dead serious about learning. by all means teach if you want but i'm just telling you what happened with me.

anyway the gym will not open until late october or november so if you wanna get together and roll around outside or something let me know. I'll gather some 2nd years to do it too.
I'll send you a PM with my contact info.

Mike
Awesome, bro. I am down. 😎

I'm selling an extra copy of Grant's Dissector, 13th edition. This is the dissector that you are required to have for anatomy. Guaranteed to beat absolutely any price. pm or im me.

Anyone else getting annoyed that Leheste never finishes all his slides? He routinely leaves out the last 8-10 slides. 😡

yeah its a little annoying. but i think if he didnt cover it it wont be asked, since he knows what questions he gave in already.

Quick question, do you know if the passing (65-70) is on the written or to pass you can get 50% on the written and like 20% on the practical?

He specifically said we are responsible for knowing the rest of the slides he didn't get to, b/c he already gave in his test questions. You'll notice he doesn't pick and choose which ones to go over; he just runs out of time and misses the last sequential 8-10 slides. So I would not count them out.

I'm not exactly sure how the grades are combined. All I could find in the manual is this: "For the purpose of determining who will be eligible to receive an Honors-Grade ("H"), the written and practical examination grades will be combined in a 75%/25% ratio, respectively." Is this only for the purpose of honors? Do we need to hit a 70 on the written alone to pass?

No because it says somewhere that u need to pass both the written and the practical, i think u need 65-70 on both. How are u guys studying for pathology are u reading the textbook or are u just doing his notes and slides?
The one teacher i really dislike is the transport/extracellular lady

gl with the test :luck:

i think passing is 70% unless the class average is below that. If it is below then the passing score will be the class average but the ultimate minimum passing score is 65% regardless of class average going below that. Like lilzelda, my understanding was that you needed to pass the written and practical seperately. Not sure if that means OMM/Anatomy combined.

Don't game the system!! Is Dr. Elkowitz former military? I plan to study Histology/Pathology together.
-reading Elkowitz's notes and slides we went over in class.
-Reading the chapters in Robbins
-Adding Goljan since he ties in clinical correlations also.
-Robbins Review and Lange for questions
-For Histology: class notes and pics in Ross and pics online

Try to nail down the pathology now since this is the foundation of medicine and the biggest part of COMLEX and Step exams. :luck:

He does have a military-ish haircut, doesn't he? 😀

All sounds like good advice, HG. If you haven't already, I suggest everyone start entire systematic reviews of each subject. We started a couple days ago. Pharm and Microbio took us about 7 hours each(included are a dinner break and other small breaks). For anyone studying alone, group studying for reviewing may be a good idea, since you can quiz each other as you go. Good luck on the exam this week, everyone! :luck:

yes, yes and amen.
good luck on the exam!

I didn't hear that, I know they said that we don't need to bring calculators b/c they would provide them, I know that Dr. Hutak said we wouldn't have to extrapolate lines when doing the half-life for two compartment models

so who else is nervous?

How crappy would you feel if you fail the FIRST test in med school. but hey there is no summer make up if you fail so its not that bad.

Do we need # 2's for the test?

It'll still be depressing to fail, do u guys know if spelling counts on the anatomy final, and how many questions are on the omm final

on the anatomy spelling probably does not count exactly, but they should be able to make it out. i am sure getting a letter or 2 wrong wont matter. trochanter or trocanter and such.

on omm, there are 6 q's for the landmarks, 2 q's for the examination, telling patient what to do, and 3 for deep q's, fascia rule of 3's and freyttes. grading is 30pts, 10pts, and 60pts, respectively.

this was discussed in the omm review.

Does anyone who had yellow in the anatomy lab know what the marker was pointing to in the orbit? Also was the poorly defined muscle in like #4 the splenius cervicus?

I think it was inferior orbital fissure ?

Btw, Grades have been emailed already! Check your email!

Written Exam Scores were sent out by email already!

I had yellow also.
I think that is the inferior orbital fissure. Something I looked up after the practical.
I remember putting splenius in one of the first 6 but it's all a blur to me now.

Definitely glad it's over!!!

I had yellow, and yes on that question it was definitely the inferior orbital fissure

For those of you who care...
Dr Elkowitz is former military... I think something to do with rockets...
Dr Van Arsdale is prior service and current military... already did a tour in iraq this war...

As i was leaving school this past friday afternoon, making a LEFT by the light off campus, towards glen cove rd, (going west on northern), my radar went off. I was doing 80 already and had to break to 55. Good thing i did, there was a cop by the 1st "driveway/road" after the turn, hiding on my left, clocking ppl.

Everyone should be careful around school for this, get a radar, b/c the cops in LI are horrible, and no one needs points. BUY A RADAR if you drive fast, its NOT 100% but the times it saves you its well worth the $200-300 bucks spent on the radar.

Anyone else see cops anywhere on the way to school? please post.

Also whats up with the campus "cops", i heard some ppl get tickets for b.s. things like garbage around their cars!

Yeah I see them all the time on the way to class.
A V1 Radar Detector definitely is one of the best.
However a large majority of the police use laser now, so you'll also need a laser jammer the POP feature on most radar detectors just isn't good enough for laser 🙁

pop is only for Ka band, when they use for like miliseconds it will still work, mine does. The only time the laser gets detected is when its ON you, so its too late.

dont have a jammer, are they legal? a cop told me no one time but i think he was bsing.

Where do you see cops, please give particular locations and or times, if possible.

Hey first years! How was your first test?

Thats right not sure why I was thinking it was pop, the V1 also has a laser detector but like you said once you get warned its too late.

If you are looking for a laser jammer go with the blinder: http://www.radarbusters.com/products/blinder/default.asp

I see cops on post ave. right after the overpass of the LIE heading too NYCOM. They just setup a speed trap by some horse place on post ave. close to northern blv.

I also always see them on Glenn Cove Road by the LIE.

Hey first years! How was your first test?
It was all right. Alot of people didn't pass; considering the mean and the passing grade cutoff were three points apart, I'm guessing at least 40% failed. 😱 Amongst my friends who passed, most of us barely passed with the exception in our group having a low 80's score(highest of my friends).

Wow, I feel bad for you guys. Our first test (last year) was really easy with a high mean and we didn't start dissecting until the middle of the year. You guys have it tougher than we did. At least there is the retake 😉

Dude,

The anatomy portion of the 2nd year exam today sucked; i thought. I really don't feel like taking a make-up. THose damn right vs. left vs. posterior vs. anterior views of heart. I had no f@cking clue. Pisses me off.

I think those fellows had their way w/ test format.

If the scores are normally distributed it is probably around 20% not passing. Still a big chunk. I heard the average last year was around 79% but the 2009 fundamentals exam did not have a lot of basic science on it.

Next time you pick up your mail take a look at the grade distribution of some exams in the last few years. It's in the glass case next to the 1st year mail box.

One exam down. 6 more to go!

Is NYCOM ever going to give us a webboard to discuss things?

when are 2nd years done with dissecting? You are on the CV system?
On the anatomy note, how does it work? Meaning, as first years will we finish our dissections? If so, how will we do the dissections, which have already been done on our bodies by the 2nd years?

It wasn't that hard. The only really difficult question was the embryological one with the proximal aorta coming from the truncus arteriosus on the CT for the red pins. It's a good thing I had yellow.

Yea, I thought the same way. I think I failed the practical 😡 😡 😡 That stuff was way too difficult. I had no clue how to get the orientation down in 60 seconds without being able to touch the thing.

i agree, the anatomy (i had red) was tough. on some i wasn't sure what they wanted, such as the great cardiac vein versus the coronary sinus. but i know for a fact it wasn't the fellows doing (they were arguing on our side), so if you think it was unfair and you have legitimate complaints, please e-mail the anat faculty so we can get this resolved. thanks guys, and i hope all turns out well.

2nd years will be dissecting throughout the year, and yes we're currently on CV and pulm at the moment (overlapping systems).

at the end of this school year these cadavers will be removed from the anatomy lab and you guys will have different cadavers for your dissections next year.

rumor has it that 1st years are finishing all our dissection stuff this year and we won't be doing any CV or anything like that for next year

I heard this was true from one person in the anatomy department and was told the opposite by another. So who knows at this point... 😕

i don't think this makes sense. I know we, second years, will be cutting all year and you guys are sharing our cadavers so it wouldn't work to get brand new cadavers so you can cut the insides.

i think it's better to do it over 2 years. You retain more closer to boards.

Everyone be happy for me. I passed the second year cardiovasuclar anatomy practical. :luck: 😍

I might be...if this thread was the NYCOM class of 2009 thread. 😛 j/k. Congrats, bro.

Did Dr. Hallas ever give that talk about research? He mentioned during his fundamentals lecture that there would be a meeting about this after fundamentals ended. Thanks.

congrats Yanky!

congrats Yanky!

he didn't have this talk with us until close to winter. we got a handout (in our mailboxes) listing what projects different professors were working on, and then we got a talk about stipends, requirements, etc. apply early and save copies of all your documentation, as some people got shafted (or near shafted) with the stipends. but for now i'd say just keep an eye out for the handout and go to the prof you're interested in working with asap to set something up before the "talk" even happens - i.e. beat the mad rush to land a research spot. if you're interested in doing research outside the nycom network that's possible too. some people were able to do work at sloan kettering, etc. and got some great experience as well as a very nice stipend. good luck!

since we have so many Class of 2009 lurkers on this thread --

help us first years out with how to handle pharm! After that crazy NSAIDS/Opioids/etc. lecture yesterday, I'm definitely going to need to attack this subject with more than just class notes and self-made flashcards and review books. I just got Lippincott's Pharmacology review -- what else is recommended??

Anatomy is low yield. Best to finish it in the 4-5 months any other school would do it in instead of dragging it out. It is very time consuming so it is smarter to finish it early and move onto something else.

Review books == teh sux. Get a real pharm textbook, Hutak's notes will make more sense if you read a text and stick to that.

Just curious if you guys at NYCOM have a professor named Brian Beatty in the anatomy department?

perhaps, but when i read big pharm books i find it so dull i either fall asleep or develop an uncontrollable urge to poke my eyeballs out. i'd suggest investing in a lange book called katzung & trevor's pharmacology for examination and board review (not to be confused with the katzung basic and clinical pharmacology book which i bigger, boring-er, and doesn't leave my bookshelf too often). i think the pharm for exam. and boards is the least painful and most useful pharm book for our purposes... but to the op, go check it out for yourself and see what works for you. gluck!

p.s. and after all that, if anyone actually wants to buy the katzung basic & clinical pharm book still, pm me.

well that's only partially helpful -- would you recommend Lange or Goodman and Gilman's or what? Gimme names!! 🙂

If you want to actually LEARN the NSAIDs and opioids, you'll have to start with the prostaglandin/arac. acid/cyclooxygenase pathway vs. lipoxygenase/leukotriene pathway + platelet adhesion --> coagulation cascade + spinal pain transmission pathway and its receptors. There is no way around it.

If you just want to get the questions right on the exam, then memorize a few factoids and look at the questions asked on the old exams.
