***Official Temple C/O 2012 Acceptance Thread***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i love how this acceptance thread owns all other acceptance threads... you Temple kids rule!

👍 couldn't have said it better.

haha... I love me some mac and cheese😀

I make good food when I have the time too. It's from the hours of watching FOOD NETWORK.

I make a really mean pumpkin pie too. Homemade crust and all. How's that for manual dexterity 😀 😉?

i love how this acceptance thread owns all other acceptance threads... you Temple kids rule! Cant wait to study/party with you guys... and too quote my fellow classmates SDN name, Lets get ****ed up and die..... or dental, whatever floats ur boat

I was just going to say that. We do rock! Im sure we will wish we were dead after a few months of school.

Can I say something? I love the Red Sox (and I'm from NYC!) but the 2007 Colorado Rockies were awesome. I wish they won but I gave up after game 3.

I think Todd Helton would've wanted it more than anyone else in the world. When I saw them win that 22 game streak I glued my eyes to the Tele.

I sure as heck hope we don't have many exams around postseason. 👎thumbdown👎thumbdown

Yeah that was pretty amazing. Denver was crazy when those games were goign on. After game 2 i gave up. Rockies didnt play as good in the WS as they did in the early post season. It was fun watching them though.

I've been doing some research and it looks like there are townhouses available in the manayunk area (17 min drive from school according to google maps) that run around 4 bedroom 3 1/2 bath for 2100, and 5 bedroom for 2600-2800. I even saw one that was two floors plus a carpeted basement with pool table, so four people would be paying 500-700/month and living quite well. If we're all temple dental students we can even carpool to save on gas and such. I just think its better to share a big place with a few other people (I've always gotten along great with roommates, and I've had over a dozen) than it is to have a small place all to yourself, especially since we'll all be on similar schedules and curriculum.

I'm still open to the center city area as well, I'd just need to find a place to keep my car and it seems like manayunk would be a better value.

and since there's been some interest in SCUBA lessons (I'm an instructor), I'll go ahead and look into getting my insurance back and my certification re-activated (I haven't taught a class in a while).

Is anyone looking into getting a summer job before the semester starts? I'm told its not feasible to have a job while in dental school so it might be the last chance to scrape some cash together before going horribly into debt... just curious what everyone thinks about it.

man, it seems like most of you guys want to live in the manyubank area. I dont want to bring my car and i want to be near the city. Is there something about Central City that i dont know about?

Here is what i know:

Manyubank: cheaper, farther away, more dental kids there, you need a car to get to campus, safer

Central City: closer to school, slightly more expensive, public transpo, more bars/clubs, slightly unsafe

Does manyubank have a good nightlife?

I think there are plenty of people interested in central city, its supposed to be more fun. I'm just not used to living in that kind of environment and I have a car, so I thought I could save have a bigger place for the same money if I was in manayunk. I think it would be really convenient to be in central city though, especially for the first year since you can just hop on the subway and be at the dental school in no time. The best thing might be to do central city for the first year then move out to manayunk with some people once you've gotten the dental school thing mostly figured out.

I will have a summer job but wont make lots of money. I will just work at a marina and rent boats out and probably wait tables a few nights a week. When i get to philly though, 3 or so weeks before school starts im going to take it easy and try to get some touristy things done (ie, Washington DC, NY, Delaware, etc)

On main street they have a strip of bars. My friend goes there a few times a month and says its really fun. Im down to get a bigger place with anyone interested.

I really prefer center city over manayunk because I'm not going to drive.
The prices are almost the same anyway. Lofts are nicer than rooms, really. I'm looking into studios, but my brother's friends live in Philly and know a few landlords.. I'm not going to look into it too seriously until MAY-ish because that's when all the prices drop in real estate for student renters.

I mean, I don't know about 4/5 bedroom apartments. Honestly, I have thought about a 2nd roommate to lower the cost of a NICE apartment (figure $1500-$2000/ month for a 2BR situated in Center city) if I can't get my hands on a decent 1K or lower single studio/loft. I really don't mind living with others. I did have some bad roommate experiences, but with females (drama).

Is there a discount? 😀

I'm guessing I have to learn the prerequisite of swimming first, right? 🙁

I'm still working. And it's not paying well. Broke before college, broke during college, broke after college, and even worst after dental school. Excuse me while I tend to my crying wallet.

Yeah my sister has sworn off roommates permanently after some bad experiences she had in college. I've decided that I can live with just about anyone, and I find I'm in better moods most of the time when I'm living with a few people than when I'm on my own.

I've lived with myself the last year and enjoyed the silence. The only time it sucked? Thursday-Saturday night. My friends went out and I stayed in and read some classical novels, but I rarely went out since I kind of got used to just being alone for a while. It's nice to have some company again.

Maybe I could top your sister's experiences. First year? I lived in the dorms. The girl living with me blasted loud music from the hours of 10 am- 3am in the morning. She watched the SAME DAMN movie over and over again. I mean, come on. How many people do you know watch the same movie at least once a day, reciting it???? She was ALWAYS there, she never went to class because she took the advantage of the 1.5 GPA minimum for freshmen. Ridiculous. A girl that lived next to me complained all the time. She was a rather uptight pre-pharmD student and made sure I wouldn't talk on the phone after a certain hour in the evening. The girl I lived with 2nd year was my friend, but she brought some rather annoying guy friends over, one of them was an insane born-again Christian-Nazi. The other was this emo kid that lamented about how the world and the opposite of sex worked against him everyday. I was sure I was done living with people in general for the rest of my life that year.

Then I moved off-campus to discover that nothing was really different. Still the same neighbors. I might as well make my rent cheaper by living with somebody as long as we all have functional closing doors. I don't mean to sound bitter, and let me state this right now to be blunt with everyone who might be my potential roommate- I don't mind if you all bring your girlfriends and do the Marvin Gaye-thing, just don't expect me to restrain myself from laughing really hard if the both of you decided to make it really audible- above 45 decibels or so. :meanie:

Thought I should chime in since I haven't been on SD in a while... I'm down for roommate(s) in Center City with an apartment not too far from nightlife, restaurants, and the Broad St. Line. CC is going to be the best option as far a tradeoff between living costs, transportation time/costs, and neighborhood environment.

Can't wait to hang out with you guys. From the looks of this thread, it's going to be a fun first year!

Not looking for any roommates since my girlfriend will be moving with me, but we'll definitely be up for going out to some bars or having some things at our place. I might look to do something the weekend after orientation because my birthday is a few days after. Sounds like this will be a fun class. Anyone interested in going to a few hockey games during the season? I'll definitely be going to some of the Flyers vs. Penguins games

im down for some hockey assuming the tickets prices are not too crazy. Will have to admit, im an avalanche fan

what are the prices for the bigger apts that ur looking at in manayuk? Those 120hz tv's are amazing with the blu ray huh! i just bought a 1080p samsung 46in and that thing blows it away.

yeah I can't get enough of those sony 1080p 120 hz xbr4's. I think I'm going to work at best buy over the summer to save up some cash and buy the 46 inch model. Its funny though, I don't think its the extra frames that makes them so great, it only smooths the motion out on the slow panning shots. I think what really makes the difference for me is the anti-judder technology that comes packaged with all the 120hz tv's (sony calls it motion flow), it just gives such a rock-solid image that once you get used to it, you can't stand watching tv without it. Have you switched over to 7.1 sound?

I've been looking at townhomes in manayunk that run in the neighborhood of 4 bedrooms for 2100 and five for 2700, so basically 525-550 per person. That seems to be the average out there.

that seems fair. Are there any out there that come furnished?

Wow, those prices are pretty awesome. Better than the 800-1000/ month for Center City singles.

I'm cursed for not being able to drive. 👎 Otherwise Manayunk would be an option.

Carpool. It saves even ore on gas and parking (if you choose parking) or you can park on the street. You guys are going to have fun. You'll even have a new dean. They are picking one right now and he starts in June/July.

Do people usually split gas and parking per semester?

Isn't it Dean Tansey that will be taking over? I heard it sometime early January... but maybe I'm wrong...

Yes, split it two/3/4/5/6 ways depending on the amount of poolers.

Dean Tansey is the current dean. He has done a great job. Saved the dental school from closure in the 80's. I have never seen the guy though, maybe during orientation. He is moving on to other things though. I think he will be working in our perio department now. The search is on right now for someone to take his place this summer. I don't know when the new dean will start though. Tansy is stepping down this summer. A provost is searching for a dean right now.

if you live in manayunk im sure your roomates would be willing to help ya out for a ride. I know if my roomate needed a ride i would help out. Or for grocery reasons i would just schedule it when we both can do it. I almost figure that if i were going to spend 1k/month on rent, i should have gone to USC.

Decent tix at the Wachovia center are around $42, it's about the same here in Pittsburgh and our arena sucks, can't wait till the new one opens. Have to admit, will miss the memories though. Hell, Brian may go to the games with us, I remember teasing him about how much the Flyers sucked last year, actually surprised they let me in after that 😀. Be prepared if you're going to cheer for opposing teams, Philadelphia fans are known as some of the most obnoxious and rudest in the league, so don't be surprised to hear a few f bombs or have a beer thrown on you. City of Brotherly Love is definitely one of the biggest misnomers in the history of city nicknames, but maybe that's just my Western PA bias.

I grew up playing ice hockey, so I am down to go see a few games. It's funny that I am going to school in Philly - because one of my most hated teams was the Flyers. I always thought they played "dirty pool". Anyway, I may have to slowly convert to a Flyers fan.

Did you see Richard Zednik (Florida Panthers) get his throat slashed on the ice? It was one of the worst injuries I have ever seen :scared:

Yeah, that Zednik injury was nasty. Luckily he's ok. It's so weird that only only two serious skate to throat injuries both happened in Buffalo with the other happening to Buffalo goalie Clint Malarchuk back in 1989. As far as the Flyers go, I'll always be against them, but I know they'll never win anything big with Bobby Clarke at GM. The fact that he hasn't been fired still amazes me. Guess it's a problem among all the Philly franchises, no championships since 1983 and doesn't look like there will be anymore anytime soon.

I was a Sabres fan but I never really had the chance to go see a game in a venue. 42 bucks a pop??? 😱

Any of you interested in buying a home in Drexel Hill (Upper Darby area)? I graduate this May from Temple and am selling my row home. I live close to public transit. It's been a great 3.5 years so far. I live in a nice quiet neighborhood, great location. Great for families. Let me know if you're interested or would like more information. Congratulations on your acceptance!

is there a big difference in cost to take the train into temple vs driving your car from manayunk or center city? deciding on whether or not to get a new car(the car has reached her final days) or wait till after school

From what I understand, you cannot efficiently take the train from Manayunk to school. It will drop you off at Temple main campus, then you have to walk 3 or 4 blocks to transfer to the subway - and then take that north about 10-15 blocks to the dental school.

If you live in Manayunk, you will need a car - or you will have to rely on someone to take to you (carpool). You will have to pay partial or full parking fees depending on how you split it. Most kids I hear who are carpooling pitch in about 100$ a month towards parking and gas. In center city, you do not need a car and the difference in cost is taking the subway to school. I believe a monthly subway pass is 70$, and you will be able to take that directly to the school, and no parking fees. So it's up to you, either way it will end up costing about the same either way you go when you consider all the factors.

thanks that cleared things up for me

How's the traffic for that commute? How many miles and how long does it take you (roughly speaking)?

I hear the traffic can be a little backed up at times - especially in the morning and during rush hour. It is only something like 6-7miles away, but takes about 20 minutes for the drive to school.

Subway from CC to school is roughly 3-5 mile trip - takes about 10 minutes to get there.

you also don't have to park in the paid parking which saves you 300 a semester. Unfortunately my carpool pays parking so I pitch in. 20 minutes is the average commute, but back in the day when I had my little toyota mr2 I could do it in ten...good times.

So splitting gas definately is cheaper 4 ways from manayunk, but the commute is longer. Getting a metro pass is a little more expensive in the long run but the commute is quicker plus you get to see whackos and put up with the lazy subway workers.😀

Does anyone commute from the Norristown area or know anything about it?

I have a friend who was asking me about carrying a concealed weapon in Philly. I laughed at him, because I'm pretty sure that most people who carry weapons in Philly don't have a permit. Anyways he got me curious, anyone know about the rules and regs for getting a permit? For everyone who thinks Im strange for asking this... No I'm not gonna be packing(I dont have the cash flow to buy a gun anyways😀 ) Im just curious.

one of my good friends has a concealed weapons permit. First time i he told me he had a gun on him it freaked me out. But honestly, i thought about getting one for philliy so i dont think thats stupid, but my friend said it can get you in more trouble.

My friend said if you ever pull your gun out you better end up pulling the trigger. IE only pull it out if your in danger of your life and have evidence of such. Alll in all i dont want the responsibility of that, so ill just get mugged and lose my wallet.

atleast wher ei am from you:

Cant have a felony/need clean record
Need to take a class
THen apply for one then get it
Wala, now you can carry a gun =]

whats up guys!!! just 100% made a decision to go to temple next year and couldn't be happier! can't wait to meet you all in August!!!😀😀😀

Yeah, I'm not gonna get one, I was more curious if Temple allows people to carry on campus. I always have a few guys in my classes who have one on them, just curious what Philly's policy was. I bet if you wore a shirt that said "Beware of Dog" you'd never get mugged. Or one that said "Secured by Brinks"

Temple University might have their own law about concealed weapons on campus. I am not sure what it is but a search of temple.edu might get results.

As far as philly goes, all you need is no felonies and fill out a form. The state of PA is required by law to give any law abiding citizen a concealed weapons permit.

Another rule in PA is that you are legally authorized to carry any weapon out in the open. This may prove to be easier in back country with a rifle, as I am 100% positive that if you were to carry an AK-47 around philadelphia, even though it is legal and even though you may have it strapped to your back, the cops will harass yu to no end, or another gun toter will ruin your life permanently.

Congrats to everyone who is going to temple next year!!! I am a senior and graduating in a few months and looking to rent my house next year in roxborough... if anyone is interested you can email me at [email protected]... also if you have any questions I can try to answer them the best I can

Any school where students are basically required to leave by 5 can't be too safe...

Wow, didn't know it was so easy to get a concealed weapons permit. Almost kinda scary. It's good to know I wasn't the only one that was thinking about this, although I highly doubt I'd feel the need to buy a gun and carry it around Philly, unless I start watching too many Charles Bronson flicks , which in turn would mean I'd have to grow the sweet mustache to go with it😀

You should grow a sweet mustache anyways and have it in our yearbook picture. That'd be sweet

It's safe. I leave after 5 every day.

Every student I talked to said they had never been there past 5 because they are "encouraged" to leave by 5 and they didn't know anyone who had been there past 5.
