Hmm...don't neglect to purchase the AMSA book of old exams for each semester. They made a big difference for me in biochem and were generally good to go through in the other courses (though for embryo, I'd say Dr. Marino's quiz questions might be enough).
 
Speaking of those AMSA books, I would be willing to let a first year borrow mine (I have one for each semester) for the year. Obviously they won't have the 2003 exams, but it might save you a few bucks. I know that the proceeds go to AMSA (of which I am a member), but money is tight for all of us and I have them gathering dust on a shelf probably never to be used again!
 
There were a lot of changes in exam structure for our class though (specifically in the fall semester as well as neuro and biochem), so I'd honestly recommend buying the new versions. But I'd be willing to lend my AMSA books as well - they'd have an additional year of exams, from 98-99.
 
Thanks for that tip - I think that I will buy a set and borrow the previous years too so that I can see the earlier material.
 
the older ones are kept in the library on file. Buying the new book from this yr should suffice 🙂

As an aside, I wonder how massive the 2nd yr book is gonna be.

Don't even mention it. 😱 First semester has path, pathophys, pharm and micro - we haven't had four heavy-duty science classes at one time before. I wonder if you get separate fall and winter semester grades for the courses that carry over?

nope - the only courses on my fall grade report were fcc and micro/immuno.

I was under the mistaken impression that things worked like the first year. So there are fall courses that spill over into the spring? What's the breakdown?
 
hey kids!... i'm not going to temple, nor have i read any of these posts... but i'd like to inform you all that i have a friend who will be entering temple this fall, and he is undoubtedly the laziest person i have ever met in my life... he despises work and loves sleep... if you are in any way concerned about your work ethic entering med school, know that there is someone else in your class who has much greater reason to be concerned... if he is any indication, you are well on your way to a slacker class... i hope this is comforting at my friend's expense...

fall semester you take fcc, micro/immuno, pharm, path, and pathophys. micro/immuno is only a semester-long course, but the rest continue on for the entire year. Spring semester you'll take fcc, path, pathophys, pharm, behavioral science (2 months) and epidemiology (1 month).

I just got back from phili today after reserving a one bedroom apartment in Emperian Towers on the border of East Falls and Germantowns. Can anyone tell me how long it will take to take the bus and then subway to Temple and if they have hearda anything about the tower's rep?

Ya I'll be at temple in the fall. By the way, just out of curiousity, when it comes down to Drexel and Temple, which one has the better rep. for medicine. I hadn't heard about Drexel till my interview at Temple and I'm curious to know which of the two is more respected in Phili. I'm sure both schools are fine but i was just curious to know.

I personally think that Temple has a better reputation for medicine over Drexel. I'm not quite sure why I think that though. Drexel Med and its hospitals seem more high tech and are located in better areas of the city, but Temple seems to get more attention. Maybe because it's in a grittier neighborhood and is used to handling serious stuff? Also, the MCP Hahnemann system had its share of bankruptcy and scandal. Maybe that diminished its reputation.

I'm happy with Temple though, even with its soon-to-be-revoked-probation.

I picked Temple over Drexel - I was accepted to both. I made my decision based on clinicals.
 
Like jmwalker, I also chose Temple over Drexel. Drexel is such a nice looking school--I don't think anyone who bashes it on this forum has actually been there--but I talked to a few current students at Temple on interview day, and they went out of their way to tell me that they loved their school and to come there if I got in. All the Temple students on SDN were equally enthusiastic, so I figured how could I go wrong in that company? I should say that students at Drexel also seemed pretty happy--and I emailed about 30 of them at random after I got my password to drexelone. The only thing I didn't like about Drexel was the humungo class size--my undergrad was a sea of pre-meds that I nearly drowned in, so Temple's smaller class for 2007 was definitely good. The system based lecture schedule at drexel also seemed too complicated for me, with anatomy, histo, biochem and behavioral classes popping up all over the place throughout the year. It might work, but the thought of having to open seven different textbooks the night before one quiz nauseated me. Lastly, Temple?s location is rough, but I figure it?s a pretty damn good place to learn something about people and medicine. Medicine is of course a service profession, and you don?t see Doctor?s without Borders going into rich-ass countries to give their services, so Temple?s location is actually a plus in my mind.

I was in the city for a week to find housing and Holly crap it's hot and humid in philly right now! California weather, I will miss you.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I feel like Temple has alot to offer if you look at the clinical aspect of the school and that''s why I have also chosen Temple (even though there are a couple of other concerns I needed to address in chosing where to attend).

Hey, all. Just got off the waitlist at Temple and very much excited to be there when it all gets started in a couple weeks.

Understandably, though, I have yet to receive any information about anything (e.g. health package, housing info, carpools, et cetera).

Just wondering if there's actually anything useful in those mailings, specifically the housing package as the task of getting an apartment in a good area of Philly commuting-and-everything-else-wise in the next two weeks seems to be pretty daunting (and I thought the hard part was over).

Hey Toe,

First off, congratulations. I've received most mailings I think.. first, with living, I'd suggest going there because I dont know if you would want to sign for a place without looking... but eitherway, I looked in the chestnuthill paper (it's online, try searching it, i dont know the address) and just searching on the internet... it wasnt as hard and there are many available. I had three choices and went to philly to look at them all.

other things that I'm getting finished right now is health stuff. you have to have your medical records transferred. What I did was call my highschool with all my old records and they faxed it to them. the number is (215) 707-2708. I would work on that so you dont get charged extra. You also need ot have a physical before entering.

Financially, I would call the FA office to see if your package is complete (215) 707-2667. There are loan papers you have to sign when it is, and this ensures you are all set financially to start.

There are some sheets about orientation and such.. entrance interview and such, but I don tsee that as important.

I talked to the financial aid guy in the basement of the SFC, but I forgot to ask if students from out of PA can eventually claim residency and pay less tuition. Does anyone know?

ya know G, i looked that up too... my residence is in NY but I plan on moving to MD after school. Anyway, you can claim residency... the items you must due include getting driver's license and plates in the state, registering to vote, having a certain amount of money go into the state (rent,mortgage) and lastly... the one that swayed me away from possibly trying is, a statement stating your intent to stay in PA indefinitely. i dont know how much of an issue that is, but i dont even see most pa residents suggesting they will stay in PA indefinitely... and i dont know how serious it is for you not to stay though you said you would. anyway, you can search it at temple's website, under residency or claiming residency... its in the tuition part.

I called Temple's Student Records office and I was told that I wouldn't be able to claim residency because living in Pennsylvania for the sole purpose of education doesn't count.


That makes me sad.
 
WTF? I'm changing my drivers license, living in Philly, paying rent, registering to vote, registering my car, funneling money back into the local economy by buying ham at Rite-Aid, paying sales tax on said ham, and subject to unspeakable acts of servitude like jury duty. I may very well end up staying in PA eternally. Damn it, I should get 6K off tuition.
 
Yeah - and I am a PA res and plan on blowing this state as soon as I graduate.

I came home from gross and asked my roomates - one second year, one third year if I smelled. They said no, not yet - but you will, hehe.
 
Yep, it definitely gets worse. 😛 But you shouldn't stink *too* much outside the lab. Hopefully your cadavers won't dry up as badly as last year!

btw, just in case some of you might like the info...here are the course weights for the first year (at least for my class).

Fall (20 points)
Anatomy - 10
Histo - 6
Embryo - 2
Behavioral - 2

Spring (30 points)
Neuro - 6
Biochem - 10
Physio - 10
FCC (full year, P/F grade only) - 4

Good luck to all! 🙂 Just do your best and keep things in perspective - honors are great but P still = MD.
