*** Official U of T in memphis Acceptance thread 2009 cycle***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The first round is done in early December and it is really selective, maybe 15 to 20 at most. So what UT does then is they give them a deadline to accept or reject their spots. Then they meet again in January and let in another 15 to 20 and then see how many people they get.

They do this every month or so through April until the class is filled. Now, remember that people will apply to multiple schools and get multiple acceptances. So people with multiple acceptances who cannot make up their minds will pay the deposit and more than one school to have more time to decide (they just figure they will forfeit the deposit to the school they dont want to go to). So even if 14 people say they accepted UT's offer, there still may be a few that decide to go elsewhere, so basically it's not over till it's over.

UT does not do a rolling application cycle, which pretty much means UT always expects there to be better applicants to keep coming as the application cycle continues. So UT will only pull the top few from each interview group. (In a rolling they would choose more applicants from each interview because the majority of people interviewed are qualified to enter dental school) It is just the preferance of the school how to do admissions.

But this style of acceptance really shows that UT weighs their decision almost entirely on sGPA because by doing this they only get the best and do not waste their acceptances on early applicants with average stats.

With a 3.6 sGPA I would say you are sitting extremely well with a January interview. Think about it, when you interview they will probably only have a small amount of Arkansas spots filled, if any. (remember, they dont care about overall GPA, only science GPA).

So yea dont stress at all about a january interview, youll be fine and for UT thats an early interview.

Hey Ar2.. Dont you sit behind me in histology. Lol Anyways i thought i would let ya know that I got a letter the other day that kinda went over their admissions process. The most important thing I got out of it was that they will be accepting 20-30 in the first round. seeya tues

Haha, I thought that was you... Where were you this past Thursday ? You're slackin !!.. Ha, nahh, you didn't miss much at all. Ah ok, thats a good thing I guess. Did it state when exactly the first round is/ends ?... and when the 2nd and 3rd rounds begin ?.. If you don't get back to my message, I'll see ya in class.

-Ar2

Yeah i got lazy... it happens im gonna have to copy your notes tuesday if thats ok. Anyways im not real sure about all the details of the letter. It was sent to my hometown and my mom just read some of it to me over the phone. She is sending it here to conway. So if i get it by tuesday i will just bring it to class. One thing im wondering though is how many people have they interviewed for this first round. I know there are usually 7-8 each friday and they started in august. And i think some weeks they didnt have interviews. It would also be nice to know how many are arkansas residents. Too bad everyone doesnt use Predents.com.

Glad this thread was refreshed. I'm sure people applying to TN have a lot of questions b/c this school does appear to be looking for something specific with its students. Oh and I went to school at Rhodes (which is in Memphis) and Memphis is a great city. Yea it can be dangerous, but what city can't. Great city to be a student in. Beale St. cancels out every other negative aspect.

This sounds like an absolutely flawless system for selecting the best and brightest class, with the best possible moral character. I bet it even weeds out those with a propensity to drive drunk.

So does anyone know when in November the committee meets for the first round?

You sound very informed and I don't doubt what you have said, but I saw on the TN website that they don't meet until February.... Just throwing that out there

1st - Billy, you make me smile hahaha

2nd- hold up....read slightly earlier posts...I thought that they were going to try and completely fill the class by January?? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................... conflicting ideas?

Well I have an interview in January so I HOPE you mean by the end of January. Toothtay, you've been on an interview, did they hint at anything? If you already explained this in an earlier post, sorry, i'm to lazy to go check.

This is what a current student said on page 6 of this thread (very informative page btw 😉 ) :
So I'm procrastinating and decided to stop by here for a quick look. The new Dean is really doing his best to step things up, which is great. And yes, one of the things he really wanted was to have a list for the upcoming class by Jan. He had Dr. Coleman start interviewing around early August, which is really early for UT. I think we only had a couple weeks of class before we were asked to sign up for interview lunches. So if you haven't submitted your applications yet...do it ASAP!

They plan to have a proposed list by Jan. But of course there will be people who turn down their acceptance to go to a different school so that's why they'll continue interviewing and then there's also a waitlist too.

As far as at my interview...they didn't hint at that at all. They did say they would meet around Thanksgiving for the ~Dec 1 invites....after that I don't remember 🙁

Wow, for some reason I felt compelled to read through this whole thread. Ya'll were messes last spring, but I can't blame you and I may be in your same position so i'm not gonna be a hypocrite. It was pretty entertaining though. I felt like I was reading a mystery novel and waiting to hear if people got in or not. I give it two thumbs up..

Yeah i read through the whole thing just a few days ago. I agree with you futuredent that it is novel like. Both good and bad endings.

Any references to letters of recommendation from interviewers for anyone on the thread?

Just wondering if the shadowing of dentists is simply a box the ADCOM checks or something that could tank you if you have evidence of shadowing only one dentist.

Also! Anyone know of any examples of people who got out of taking required courses? Because I've been out of school for 2 years and would rather not take english (1 semester) or a semester of microbiology. I finished with a 3.85 and turning A- into an A makes my sGPA near 4 from Vandy. Any thoughts from current UT Memphis students are appreciated!

I went to Rhodes in Memphis and took UT Memphis Summer classes. About the shadowing, if you are applying to TN, a dentist I interned with said last year said TN made it mandatory that you have at least 100 hours of experience. Whether it's one dentist or 5 (although 5 may look better) you need a 100 hrs. The more dentist you are around the more philosophies and techniques you may witness (just a side note). As for required courses, I've never heard someone get out of them, even with AP's. My friend had to take another English for LSU Dental School even the he got college credit in high school. And microbiology is not mandatory for UT Dental School. It is only mentioned in the science courses they recommend.

And LOR's are undisclosed to students. People have also said that TN interviews are closed file. So none of your stats or application are viewable during the interview

100 hours? geez Coleman said 30...anybody gotten in with just 30?

And since most of you guys are bio majors (I was econ) it probably doesn't matter, but my "deficiencies" in terms of courses that I lack included taking 1 of 3 bio courses - 1)Comparative Anatomy 2) Microbio or 3) Histo. (Basically anything where the lab requires some degree of dexterity/dissection.)

I sure hope it's not 100! I have never heard that about Memphis....always 30 like bryan said.... here's to hoping it's 30! Even though I have 100 now, I didn't at the time I applied.

Say what? Do you mean that you haven't taken either 1, 2 or 3 above? That's a prerequisite, regardless of how long you've been out of school. You'd better take one this winter, or else you're not going to be able to matriculate. As for the English, they don't care about how long it's been since you've taken that. They do require that you retake any hard sciences if it's been more than five years.

English Classes: I called Dr. Coleman a few months ago and asked him about the English Comp classes. My English Comp is about 15 years old and he said I would need to retake it. He did say if it was 6 or 7 years old, they would let it pass.

yeah no worries i'm taking microbio this spring - that post was in response to someone saying microbio wasn't required, just recommended.

And I wouldn't worry about that 5 year rule. Assuming a solid GPA, Coleman said to me that a high DAT score in each subject area would nix the need to retake a class taken more than 5 years ago.

This is what I was told. I was suprised too when I heard it. Who knows if its true. Plus if you have gotten an interview without 100 hours then obviously its not a problem. They would have either mentioned it or not given you the interview in the first place

Do any of you know people who got interviewed but didn't get in? Because obviously the interview is based solely on numbers and the interview is closed-file so it has nothing to do with your numbers, but I'm just curious what some people who didn't get in after an interview had to say...

They interview you with a closed file in order to get to know you without any bias. So interviewing a kid with a 22 is no different than a kid with a 18. It's to see how strong of an applicant you are disregarding scores. When it comes to acceptance though, they will undoubtedly take your numbers into heavy consideration. So those who did not get in, the reason was not just the interview. I'm not sure if this answers your question, but earlier in this thread people wrote about their interviews and how they went well, then didn't get in. And the reason seemed to be because of lower sGPA's or cumulative DAT scores. That is, they prefer applicants later on in the admission process with DAT scores that add up to 150 or above.

yeah i guess it's a question that only an ADCOM can answer

Does anyone know how much the deposit is at UT? 😳

The deposit to hold your spot or to matriculate? I think there are two types... Obviously holding your spot is much cheaper.

now THAT I can do! 🙂 Some schools' deposits are in the thousands.....😱

Last year it was around $200.
$200 to hold your spot!!?? NYU is over a $1,000. TN will not make much leeway with post-december acceptances if that's all students have to pay to hold their spots.

I hope you're not complaining 😀

Btw I love your pic, makes me laugh every time :laugh::laugh:

My interview is post-december😡 and I would love to go to Tennessee. I'm glad it makes you laugh though. Humor is necessary during such stressful times. By the way, I think you're a sure thing for TN. I don't know how your interview went, and I hope it went well; but considering your interview date and sGPA, I think they want you...👍

Oh no 🙁 I really hope you get in! I want to go to Tennessee too! Hopefully it's not true about the wanting to fill the class by January...when did you apply? I think I only got such an early interview because I applied the first day....lol I was way too excited :luck:

I applied July 2nd. But hadn't heard anything by September so I called and they said I had not sent in the form saying my transcript was complete. The one that you have to mail in saying you plan on taking the following courses or you had finished school... So i sent it in immediately and received the snail mail interview 7 days later. So i'm not sure if I would have received an earlier invite if my application was sorted out earlier. I was kind of mad. They didn't even tell me I was missing a form after 2 months!

That would have upset me too!! I would have been so confused. I was also wondering about the volunteering forms that they had since they're fairly vague. I initially sent them in verifying all the volunteer work I've done in college, then I got paranoid and called to see if what they really wanted was verification that I shadowed...and that was it! I was so glad I asked, so I quickly sent that in too! I don't know, but it seems that applicants really have to stay on top of their application with Memphis!

yeah that january "deadline" by which they want the entire class filled is BS. Even if they wanted to do that the best they would be able to do is have a bunch of people just eat the 200 bucks to hold a spot in the class and end up going somewhere else- like, you know, a place that actually waits the entire cycle to get the best applicants. If they did have a "list" by january, I would predict a lot of turnover in the waitlist. I admire UT Memphis for wanting to expedite the process, but there's really no point in doing so.

Yea I was surprised those shadowing verification forms too. I shadowed 3 dentists in Charlotte and 2 in Memphis. It was hell faxing those forms around and explaining the situation. But I guess its good b/c you can't lie about your experiences.

lol I only sent in from one dentist even though I've shadowed several. When I was a sophomore I shadowed ~8 newbie dentists in a GPR at UT's hospital, but gosh...I have NO clue where they are now. I don't know...I talked about both places I shadowed during my interview and they didn't say anything...just smiled and nodded hahaha

your forms, transcripts, application and most importantly, your check are simply boxes the admission office is checking off. So as toothtay learned in the interview, they don't really care how many dentists you shadow just as long as you mail in that form

I know. I wasn't bragging. I was saying it's a hassle that they make you verify your dental experiences and volunteer work.

well considering there's no AADSAS aspect to the application - I only am applying to UT Memphis - it's not that big a deal. Even better if you talk to those saps preparing to go to med school to work for obama. There are so many hoops you have to jump through for med school it makes dental school applications seem like massages

what apartment complex/complexes do people normally stay in? also any of you know of students who have bought condos and sold them after graduation? probably the wrong thread but figured i'd get this in before the december 1st admit announcements come out (finally!)

The Bristol on Union houses a lot of UT Healthcare students (med, dental, pharmacy). Mud Island is also very popular and has numerous apartment complexes and houses to rent. I have lived in both and recommend Mud Island. Safe, pretty, close to downtown, and lots of young people. I'm not sure how available 'condos' are in the area. I'm sure there are a couple complexes, but i'm not familiar with them.

There are some brand new condos just built on Mud Island. I forgot the names of them but they're right to the left of the bridge as you cross over. They were SUPER nice, but pricey. I think >200,000. There are plenty of houses for sale on the island that are 100,000 dollars cheaper than the condos. Hmm...I think just about all of the apartments on the island ran around $550 a month (give or take utilities..if you have a pet, etc.) One complex on the island gave discounts to UT law, med, dent, pharm students... hmmmmm I'm sure there are students that will be wanting to sell condos if they have one. Maybe Memphis will hook ppl accepted with some list of students that are doing this!

I got some big envelope with a folder full of University of Detroit Mercy info today. Did anyone else get this thing? Its the typical stuff they would give you during your interview, but happened to get it in the mail. All it says is if I have any questions give them a call or email.

This is a UT Memphis acceptance thread. Us folk don't take to kind to you northerners talkin' bout Detroit Mercy. Get outta here
