Official UNECOM class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sweet J,

I was in Biddeford last weekend, checking out apartments and didn't see a single Wells Fargo bank branch. But don't take my word for it! I'm sure they have a branch listing on their website you could check out.

As for Verizon... I have some bad news. I went to a Verizon store this weekend and found out that they do not service York County at all!!! I couldn't believe it, because they have the best coverage nationwide (and most of Maine) of any carrier I know. The salesperson did tell me that they are planning to have a network up an running in JUNE.... I hope so, because I don't want to chanage wireless companies. A good alternative seems to be AT&T/Cingulair.

Well, hammering out these details and putting a deposit down on a place have made the reality of starting school this summer all the more real. Can't wait to meet everyone in July.

I have a Verizon phone also... when I was there for my interview the Roam on my phone was flashing. I was told by someone else with a verizon phone that this means that you're not on a verizon tower, BUT as long as the Roam is flashing you're on a tower of that Verizon has contracted with, so you don't have to pay roaming charges. I made a few minutes of calls while in Biddo and roaming charges never showed up on my bill. (maybe someone else can give me a real reason why this happened). We'll have to wait and see if Verizon comes in. I have a contract till like February of next year, so maybe if Verizon doesn't come in I'll switch to ATT/Cingular.

Jon

1) There are NO Wells Fargo Banks

2) Verizon service isnt the greatest in this area, but it is here. I dont know what the verizon people said, but I do know that my girl friend (who also goes to UNE) has a verizon cell phone, and it works pretty good. Personaly, I would recomend ATT.

For the FAFSA question, I did not put any of my parents' info on it as I was told not to by a Financial Aid counselor at NSUCOM (I know I'm a traitor! But not everyone in the UNECOM Fin. aid office is all that friendly...)

Did anyone else choose T.H.E. for their loan lender? Just curious...

I hope everyone from out-of-area is visiting his/her apartment before you decide on it. I flew up there a few weeks ago and looked at a place 1 mile from campus on the ocean, thinking it was going to be the perfect place for me, and I HAVE NEVER FELT SO CLAUSTROPHOBIC in my life!!! Hehehe, it was tiny. You couldn't even do jumping jacks without hitting the other wall!!! And you had to suck in to get into the bathroom b/c the door was blocked!!!

Luckily, I found a place 4 miles from campus on High Street where I can do cartwheels in the living room...

hey just wanted to let the new folks know that several of
us have been chatting on AOL instant messenger.

i'm allison331 if you want to im me!

allison

KMW,

I chose T.H.E. also, but I'm not entirely sure why... seems like everyone thinks they are good.

I also took an apartment on High Street, 76 High Street to be exact. Mark is the landlord there. Are we neighbors??

Hi all,
I havent been posting awhile so I have a pile of discussions to get in on 🙂 I am 22 y/o and will be 23 on August 27th about a month into our class schedule.

I found my apt I will be living in the apts between 133-144 Main St( I think thats the numbers). ABout 3 miles from campus.

I use cingular and I have heard their reception is decent out there.
As far as banks I have had some bad expereinces with Fleet as have my parents. I think I may also be using Peoples heritage.

On another note I am also so excited that we got our starting dates!

I am also on AIM my screen name is smiler669.

I have heard several people going to Europe, when and where? I am also planning on going I think in June.

Talk to you all soon!

Well I ended up declining my acceptance to UNE, but I just wanted to comment on the bank thing still being from the area. Fleet can be a hassle at times, BUT a few good things. First they've been bought out by Bank of America, so many of those will be changing. Second Fleet is EVERYWHERE in New England. Granted if you use a local bank it won't be bad as the majority of your time will be spent right in the area, but if you travel to Portsmouth or Boston or Portland it will be much harder to find an ATM, etc. (or even when you go home). So, keep those things in mind because in the big picture they're not that bad. Good luck to everybody in the coming years!!!

Josh

jtessier : Thanks for the info - but sorry you're leaving our post music man! You never told me what kind of music you perform!!

jmarra03 : Don't know about the others but I will be in Norway. Would love to coordinate - it's doable!

I found a nice condo in Old Orchard Beach. A good friend that I work with just bought a place, so I decided to take over his lease with my girlfriend. Its great. New, all of the appiances. Pool, sauna, gym, tennis courts. Great area. Its about a 10 min drive from campus, but since I work in OOB now, and live near campus, Im used to the drive. Its kind of funny, I will have the same drive I always do... It will just be backwards when I actually begin living there😕:wow:

Fishy424: Yes we are neighbors. I pm'd you. Your landlord also happens to be great friends with mine!

When are you moving in? Where are you from?

-Kelley

Come on guys, 4 days since the last post... Lets keep this page going...

I am from Utah moving out to Maine with everyone else this summer and I was wondering if the Maine lobster is really as good as everyone is telling me. Fresh seafood doesn't really exist here in Utah, but I have been told a million times that Maine has the best lobster ever, is this true? I hope so.
Andy

Hey ya'll...I am excited to join you all in July. As for the lobsters, they are supposed to be great in ME...if you like the cockroach of the ocean. I am a Mainer who does not eat seafood (bad karma from the torturing of tide pool critters as a young man) so I don't have the best answer for you.

Where are you all in the financial aid process...is there anything pressing besides the Fafsa form? Are you all already nailing down housing too? I have become king slack since recieving my first acceptance letter and probably should get on it.

Andy, where are you in Utah? I will be out in SLC thursday and friday to ski.

Andy Mc:clap:

Hi guys!!

dryfly : I just came back from Maine, and yes, the seafood is as good as you can imagine (I am a cook and have travelled far and wide- so trust me🙂 ). Right now, fresh shrimp are 99 cents/pound.

- Just got a house too!

Sorry, Shoddy, we looked at over 40 houses and tons of property in the three days we were there, or I would have called. Hope we can get in touch when I go back!

Note to everyone:
Two students said to bring scrubs on the first day, if you don't have them, because lab starts promptly. They reccommended four pairs for gross anatomy (one pair for each 'unit' that you can throw away when your done). They also said to bring a pair of old sneakers that you can throw away in the end, too.

Hope that helps!

Hi all,

Gioia, thanks for that info -- very helpful!

Can't wait to see all of your faces so that I can keep
everybody straight. I just realized from the Andy Mc's
post that there are 2 Andy's!!!

Allison

Good idea Bluesunlily. We should all post a picture of ourselves so we will recognize each other on the first day of class! What does everyone think? Is this even possible- to have a thread just with pictures?

Welcome Andy from Utah! And the other Andy too. Yes, Maine lobster is awesome...

Kelley

Hi everyone! Congrats and hope to see some of you in July/August. I'm a 3rd yr and we have to attend a seminar at UNE for 2 wks in August and I was planning to stay an extra week to study for boards....was wondering if anyone would have an extra room?...of course, I'd pay part of your rent for that month...I'll pretty much be there just to sleep (most of my time will be at UNE)....let me know.

[email protected]

hey guys , i was wondering if you know whether UNECOM is still interviewing at this time and also are people getting accepted still or getting waitlisted? any info would be greatly appreciated.

Good gracious, yes, please bring scrubs and comfortable shoes with no sentimental value to school on the first day. Dr. Cross holds an 'introduction to anatomy' part of orientation, so he'll tell you the day before classes start that you'll need to come to class in your scrubs the next day. Also, it gets kind of cold in lab, so I'd recommend bringing some old long sleeved T-shirts that you don't like to wear over or under the scrubs (you don't have to wear scrubs, you can just wear old comfy worn out stuff if you want, but don't wear anything you love too much as you'll be burning it in november in the post gross toast).

And, because there are some of you out there that want to know this...
Doctor Cross (Anatomy course director) will make you memorize the brachial plexus over the first weekend, he'll try to scare the pants off of you and tell you that you shouldn't do anything but study that weekend, etc etc...he's only half right. And don't go trying to memorize the brachial plexus before you get to UNE...please enjoy your time off to the fullest.

-someone who knows!!!!!

thanks for the helpful info oceandoc! if you
think of other things let us know.

will take your advice about relaxing and enjoying
my free time while i can!!!

nerves79 : I met an interviewing group this past weekend and some first year students thought UNE was interviewing 2 more times before they narrow the pool. Hope that helps!

You know, I think I'm gonna write a song about the med school admission process! Any musicians here that want to accompany me?🙂

Gioia, let's think of some lyrics for our song...

Applying to med school
Is harder than it may sound,
It can make you go crazy,
As I have personally found!

As if undergrad wasn't enough,
To stress me out and make my life rough,
Here comes the MCAT to study for,
I will give up my summer to make a good score.

In rain, sleet, sun or snow
To the Kaplan Center I go,
To watch videos and do lots of thinking
While my friends are out laughing and drinking!

At last, at last, MCAT day has arrived
My nice calm state is extremely contrived.
They hand out the tests and it takes all day,
My stomach, in a growl, will have to stay.

Oh thank heavens I'm finally done,
No more studying and giving up fun.
The MCAT was a pain in my rear,
Let's hope I won't retake it next year!

Through all my hard work
I have come to discover,
That I desperately need
Some time to recover.

But wait! Hold on!
To relax now would be wrong!
How could I forget?
It?s not over yet!

Interview season is finally here,
I hope I don?t trip, or stutter, oh dear.
What should I say, to sound super smart?
Something that will surely set me apart.

With my bank account dry
And sleep hard to get,
I am working two jobs
To pay off my debt.

Wow! I'm accepted!
To UNECOM in Maine,
I hope that my classmates
Haven't all gone insane!

Okay, kwmorris, You're hired! Do you sing too?😉

That was great!

Awesome Kelley!

That could be a handy technique for memorizing tons of info
next year!

Allison

Kelley, that's awesome! I read that instead of doing my taxes and Fafsa! AHHH, someone please motivate me to get it all done! 🙄 (stupid two shares of Key Bank stock that someone gave to me that makes me have to fill out a 1040A for $8.00 in dividends that I got last year instead of the 10 minute long 1040EZ!!) GRRRR+pissed+.... ok I'm done venting now... I'll do it this weekend after going to the Celtics game on friday night! YAY! Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Jon

Congratulations to all that have been accepted thus far. And to those still waiting, there is hope. To anyone looking for housing, I live 15 minutes from school in a house and looking for roommates. If you are interested in hearing more about it, send me an email.

I am so happy !!!! I just found out I got accepted to UNE my first and only school I applied to!!!! (from Lisa through an email this morning and I cant wait to get my official letter of acceptance).
I am sorry to offend anyone but I must give praises to God for it was a very hard journey and now I feel God has lifted a big weight. I know that this must be the feeling for many of you that post to this sight. I want to offer others who are still waiting,,was rejected or thinking of appplying in the next cycle. NEVER GIVE UP!!!!! Because of many circumstances (and lack of money), I only applied to UNE back in December .I filled out the AACOMAS and waited patiently for my secondaries as the deadline approached. I had to beg UNE to give me my scondary first since AACOMAS was backed up and went on faith sending my letter of recommendations before AACOMAS sent their electronic profile. on Feb 9 i found out I got an interview for the 19th which went very well and today(March 1). was my acceptance.
I do suggest to apply early in the summer for next cycle...I did not because I was recovering from a bad accident and though I would never be able to hangle the pressure an rigors of medicine again which is why i delayed. There is alot to my story I am leaving out, but I must say if you want something bad wnough, go for it!! ANd thank God for all the right people he puts on your path to help you achieve your goals. So now phase 1 is completed and I cannot wait for phase 2 of the exciting journey I will be taking with the class of 2008 of going though our unique medical education.
Thank you for allthe positive notes andinspirtion of post on this sight.
see you soon in biddeford:clap:

ps. kim I would be interested in renting if you do not mind two furry friends(I have to w kittens which I would hate to leave behind with my boyfriend).

Congratulations datchado!

I know exactly what you mean! I'm so thankful that the application process is over! It's definitely a feeling of relief! 😀

See you in July!

-sandiflipflops

Datchado: Congratulations on your acceptance! Isn't it the best feeling in the world?!!!

-Kelley

thanks for all the congrat!!!! excuse my spelling erros in the previous post...i was so excited i did not bother to check my post and my fingers got ahead of my thoughts😱

Congratulations, Datchado and welcome aboard!!

Do you live in the area?

Hi Shoddy18! I was wondering if you could tell me about the gym at UNE, since you live in the area. When I went up there for my interview last December, there was a blizzard so I never got to see the gym. Is there a steam room/sauna/jacuzzi? Also, is there a racquetball court or a rock-climbing wall (wishful thinking)?

Thanks,

Kelley

Hey Shodddy,
Just got your pm and wrote back. No problem at all!

Kelley, I saw the gym when I was there -- just the bare minimums,
no perks. Shodddy can probably tell is the details, though.

Anybody know if there are any affordable gyms in the area?
Not sure if I'd get a membership, but it's worth giving a little
thought to...

Allison

bluesunlily,

There is a Gold's Gym and YMCA in Biddo.

There are about 5 other Fitness Centers in and around Saco.

Portland has plenty too, including Yoga studios and Karate (Biddo also has Karate).

I think the gym here is pretty good.

Everything listed below is in the campus center:

-Full size olympic pool

-large sauna (in each locker room)

-8 person hot tub.

-Full gymnasium w/ indoor track

-2 or 3 racquetball courts

The actual fitness center has most of equipment I can think of... All of the free weights, benches, weight machines. All sorts of cardio stuff. Lots of bikes, rowing machines, stair machines, and a few of those eliptical machines.

There are a few of everything, not lots. Although, since the place never gets too crowded, it has never been a big deal. Of course there are a few times when it gets crowded, but if you avoid these by about an hour you may be the only one there.

All of this stuff has been fine for me. I guess if you are used to a really big pro gym w/ lots of everything, you may be disapointed, but I havent been. Besides, the best part is that it is FREEEEE.

-Scott

Shoddy,

Thanks for the gym info. The facilities sound good.

One thing, when I was up for the interview I heard that UNECOM students had to pay something like $2 per visit. Is that true? Just curious.

fishy424

As far as I know the $2 thing is untrue. Im almost postitive that it is, but I guess it is possible that I have just been oblivious to it.

Maybe it's two dollars for family members or guests or something like that. I remember them mentioning something about $2 at the gym while I was there also... hmmm

That is correct. There has always been a 2 or 3 dollar charge per day for guests of students, but it is free for all students, faculty and staff... (its weird seeing your professor shower in the locker rooms...)😱

By the way, I got all of my financial aid information for next year. I got it over campus pipeline, so I imagine the rest of you wont get a paper copy for a few more days or so. WOW, it?s so damn expensive... I?m going to be poor forever... But there is a flip side... Its good incentive to finish med school because if I don?t I will have to change my name and move to Tijuana to avoid paying back my student loans.

Talking about money brings out so many emotions. 😱 😎 😀 🙁 +pity+ :wow:  :horns:

I hear you, Shoddy! You can borrow my name book😀

Wow! I definitely didn't see the whole gym. That
sounds great! I love to play racquetball! Nothing's
better to relieve a little stress than to wack that
little ball against the wall!!!

Shodddy, reading your description of our looming financial
woes put just about all of those smileys on my face. Ha
ha...

Allison

MY FAFSA HAS BEEN PROCESSED!! YAY! Now they can process my information... I got a little worried, but I guess now I don't need to worry quite as much. I guess now I can put in the smiles... 😀 😀 😀 😀

Shoddy18: Since you are the only one who has received his/her fin. aid info for next year so far, I was wondering if you could help me better understand how the allotting of the money will work. Are we all definitely receiving the exact amounts stated on the financial aid website? i.e. $520/month for rent, $3,600 for travel, etc.

http://www.une.edu/financialaid/costscom.html

Are these allotted amounts included in our tuition, or do we have to apply for more loans besides the one we already applied for? Any assistance would be appreciated- I'm so confused!

😕

Kelley
