Official UNECOM class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone and welcome Melly,
So glad to see that our class is bonding already. I am so excited to see everyone this weekend! I also recently caught up with Matt L. one of our other classmates yesterday in the middle of all this snow. Hope to see you all in Maine this weekend! Drive safe!

Janelle

hey everyone!

since i'm home sick from work today and had a minute, i thought i'd just drop a line and say hi. i suppose i'm not technically sick, just trying to shake off the last bit of the "irish flu" i seemed to have picked up last night ... something tells me it has to do with a few irish car bombs ... 😀 FYI, san francisco has an awesome st. patrick's day scene!

i'm so jealous that all of you get to meet up this weekend! don't get me wrong, i love california, but sometimes i wish i was already out there. i guess we'll all meet soon enough and start having all kinds of crazy med school fun. have a great time at starbucks or wherever you end up going!

joanie

Let's meet at Starbucks in Portland at 2:30ish. 👍

Greetings! I was just wondering what time would be most convienient for everybody...from personal experience with realtors, sometimes they take more time than they tell you. So does 1:30 or 2pm sound okay to everyone? Looking forward to meeting y'all!

-Mel 😛

wow Kelley! you read my mind! you psychic you. 2:30 sounds great! portland it is.

Any UNE'rs for the class of 2008 out there? I read the former threads but want to rekindle the flame for Maine!

I was accepted and enjoyed my time at UNE but would like to know what the entering class is like. I am from the west coast and am one of those very sociable So. Californian types!

Thanks

Hey gioia, I'm from So. Cal too. There's a couple of us that are attending UNE right now. I visited UNE over 2003 Halloween weekend and met a guy that grew up only 20 minutes from me. That was nice to know.

I'm heading back out there to do formal interviews next week. Wish me luck! If I attend UNE, I'm sure we'll meet and have a lot to talk about!

Oh, is the commute to Boston really only an hour away from Biddeford? Trader Joe's is there!!

I'm just reading through this thread for the first time...

Trader Joe's is in Boston! This IS news! Trader Joe's is the only store that I can find that supplies a certain type of tea that will be essential to my success in med school 😉. In fact, I was contemplating bulk purchase of tea from the Trader Joe's in my neighborhood. YAAAAAAAAYYYYY! I am now extra excited...

Hi Everyone Kelley and Janelle here.
It has been brought to our attention that Portland being a city has more than one Starbucks 🙂 We were thinking of doing the one at this adress because it should be the easiest to find because it is right off of 95 in the Mall. It is also right off of Rt 1 from Biddeford. Hopefully we'll see you all at 2:30! If you have any questions give Kelley and I a holler . I will have my cell 321 302 0620.

Hey Guys,
I would love to meet you guys but I have to work all afternoon. If you want, I work about 1/4 of a mile from that Starbucks; you could come visit me. Right now I work for a dog food company doing in store demos, and I will be in the "Pet Quarters" in South Portland from 10-4 today. As soon as you get of the mall road exit off 95, hang a left and the store is in the stripmall with the ChristmasTree Shop. I'll be the guy in the bright purple shirt doing a demo. Call my cell if anyone has any problems, either finding this store or the Starbucks. We have been in the area about 2 months now and I'm getting pretty good with directions.
Hope to see you if you guys have the time.

Arg, I'm so bummed that I can't be there this weekend.
I like coffee and pets, but not pet food. 😛 (incase you were
wondering...)

I'll be up there in April!!!

😉 Allison

do u guys know anything about waitlist movement at UNECOM?

anyone...

anything??

i got a letter saying that i am waitlisted (2 weeks ago) and they will contact me if there is any news.should I e-mail/call them?😕

HI Dreamchaser.
I do know that ususally a decent amount of the waiting list gets in. One of the other members of our class has a friend who was waitlisted last year and got in, the bad news was it was 2 days before class started. So unfortunately it may be a bit of a wait to see if you get invited into the class. I would say keep in touch with Lisa Lane and the admissions office to check on your status change and keep reminding them why you want to go to UNE. Hopefully I'll see you in July!

Janelle

i'm back...been away from the 'ol internet box for a couple months (apparently). seems like you've all been busy getting to know each other. here's a little about me:

rhode island native (represent)
did undergrad at bc ('02)
since then, i've been busy with work at a radiology clinic and local hospital diag. imag. dept

met with my twin (janelle) and kelley earlier today. had a great time / hope to do it again soon.

got to go. can't wait to meet you all. till then, keep on keepin' on.

-matt.

😀

Hi there Matt
Welcome back 😉 I never knew I had such a cute twin 😉 Had a great time this weekend with you all and I hope to do it again sometime soon. I guess I am also representing the RI and the MA 🙂 Graduated from Providence College undergrad and am currently an EMT with Brown University.

See you all soon!

Janelle

Janelle is right, dreamchaser.

Hang in there but don't be afraid to call UNE. My host got in but didn't find out until she actually called the school to see if she got in: a week before classes started.

Good luck!

thanks a lot ppl!u guys are so helpful!

i will e-mail lisa lane.

if i get in, i'll be from CT.anyone else also from CT?

I'm not from CT, but my sister has lived there forever...does that count?🙂

Hi Dreamchaser,

I grew up in CT, Norwalk to be exact. Currently living in Cambridge, MA.

While many consider much of CT to be a part of NY (perhaps rightly so), it will only help that you are a resident of a New England.

Good luck!

I, too, had a fun time this weekend up in New England. Thank you Janelle for picking me up from the airport and driving me around everywhere!

It was so great meeting my future classmates (Melissa, Jon, Shirish, Matt, and Janelle). Maybe we can all do it again in a month or two, and hopefully more people will be able to come.

I finally have my apartment picked out, on State Street in Biddeford. It's such a relief to know where I will be living. If anyone is interested, I found a really nice, cute apartment available at 67 Clifford St. in Biddeford. The lady who used to live there recently passed away and lived there for 25 years! It was in really good condition and the rent was reasonable. Check it out on the UNE website. The landlord's name is Mr. Lambert.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. It's a beautiful day here in Florida.

😛 Kelley

Aww anytime Kel. I agree hopefully we can do it again soon maybe sometime in April or May. In the meantime send some of the warm weather this way it's about 20 degrees out today!
I'm definitly glad that I am getting to talk to you all so I can know more people at orientation! You have all been great and I am so excited to start!

Janelle

I will probably be flying back up there April 23-25th if you are all interested in having another get-together. Last weekend, a few of us had dinner together at Vinny T's Italian Restaurant by the Maine mall in Portland. It was really fun getting to know everyone and finally putting names (and SDN screen names) to faces.

Will everybody be able to come up to Maine the 4th weekend of April?

Kelley

kelley - i'll probably go up the 24th (sat.); just have to get the night off of work. i'll let you know.

everyone - anyone else doing a military hpsp?

matt.

Why do our classes start earlier than most other schools?

We start earlier because we don't have predissected cadavers and our anatomy class is the second longest out of all of the medical colleges( MD and DO) or at least that is what I have heard.

Most OM schools don't, although some schools, like UHS, share: 2 groups of four...

The gross. anatomy prof. at UNE mentioned that he had prosected cadavers available to view...

We are just special, I guess!!

ok, i feel like a little bit of a ***** ... normally i get little email messages when people post stuff on this thread, but lately there weren't any emails coming, so i figured everyone was off on spring break or just not talking or whatever, and i was sad. but then i sign on today, and there's all these postings, and now i'm happy again! i guess i'm just entertained these days ...

it sounds like you guys had a great time meeting up over the weekend (and i'm still sad i couldn't go, even though i got to talk to janelle and kelley online while they were there, so it was KINDA like i was there 🙂 )

and i think i'm might have to bite the bullet and come out there sometime in april. i'd love to make it a time when everyone is around, but we'll see ...

ok, time to go watch friends and the apprentice (any other bad TV addicts out there?)

joanie

Hello all. Allison, Janelle, and I are working on a UNECOM website so that we can all post our pictures on it. We just started on it so bear with us! If you can figure out how to post your own pictures of anything you are welcome to do so.

Hi all
I stumbled upon an article that you might want to read about payment in the medical professions and top paying jobs overall.
http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/invest/extra/P78253.asp

I also wanted to divulge to Joanie that I also am a TV fan and watch CSI and Crossing Jordan and ER and Tru Calling pretty religiously 🙂 I also have a tremendous DVD collection that will be keeping me company on those cold ME nights 😉

Janelle

Speaking of being a TV addict, anyone else annoyed that ER was a repeat last night? It's like common Romano is gone, stop showing him... oh well, I guess I can be happy that next week is all new  Anyway, back to UNE type stuff...

Jon

Good job, guys!! I have some great digital photos of the campus and surrounding area that I can forward to your site!

HAHA,
Yeah I have been annoyed at the amt of repeats lately, esp ER. Oh well sweeps is coming up which means all new shows 🙂

Hello everyone,
Central Maine is having a beautiful sunny weekend:clap:

I am a big ER fan and the reruns have been disappointing especially when they show next weeks new episode and it turns out being another rerun. This week it will be new and I think it is about a major mistake of one of the third year medical students. I was told that when you get to third year and have better clinical understanding, the accuracy of the show is amazing. The only inaccuracy about the show is the level of involvenment of doing procedures and autonomy that Lucy(the med student that got killed by the psycho) and the two main med students in this season have. When Carter started as a third and fourth year med student, I was told that is more accurate of what it is like .
Now look at how smooth Carter can run a code or spill out orders- there is hope yet .

Has anyone watched Resident Life on TLC?

And yes I am slowly becoming an Apprentice fan and was a big Survivor fan but not that much for this season.

Have a great weekend

Even being an EMT you can see that most of what they do on ER is clinically sound ( or as much as it can be) but sometimes when th EMT's watch it together we'll catch little snippets of farcity, for example when they do chest compressions in CPR most of the time they are using arms only and not compressing, they instead bend over and look like thye are doing some kind of funny push up on the patient! ( which is good I suppose because if its a real person that would hurt and could be dangerous!) Many people that are clinically trained esp the ER docs I've talked too have said ER is pretty good.

About residents ife I know I catch it every once in a while when I remember to tune in. I know Kelley has watched a couple too and a few of the other students I've met. Definitly interesting show!

Talk to you all soon!

ever take a look at the x-rays hanging up? i do.

every once in a while, you'll see a film hanging BACKWARDS. haven't seen anything upside down yet (though some films like arms, wrists, feet can be viewed correctly in a number of different ways).

other times, an x-ray is hanging that totally does not represent the patient in the room (ie different gender / body habitus).

something to consider...

anyone know, who the director/dean of admissions is at UNECOM, thanks?

Dean Patricia Kelley was one of my interviewers. I think she is the dean of admissions but I could be wrong. Lisa Lane would know- you may want to call her and ask: 207-283-0171

Dean Kelley is the dean of student affairs. Dean Shannon, (DO, MPH, etc) is the dean of the whole school and has the official final say on who gets in or doesn't. If you've got admissions questions your best bet is emailing or calling lisa lacroix-lane...she's the bestest.

Ocean Doc,

I like your 'location'... I'm lost in electron transport and sandwiched in the succinate-Q reductase complex somewhere...

It seemed appropriate when I was studying pharm until 4:30 AM.

I'd like to change my screen name to appease oceandocDO (they were here first, but I didn't know it)...anyone know how I can do that?

NERVES79: I PM'd you.

Perhaps on the web page you could have a spot to post our AIM screennames. I'd be willing to put mine up there to chat with anyone.

Good idea. I will work on putting a place where people can add their aol screennames. The website is not finished yet...

Anyone and everyone is welcome to email me pictures and I will post them under "photo gallery." email: [email protected]

Kelley

For some reason, I cant get the webpage to load right. None of the pictures will come up.???

OceanDoc,

Just go into your personal settings on SDN and you can find where to change it, although lots of people on SDN have similar screen names so you really don't need to appease anyone.....

hey all!

shodddy - i think kelley's working on the page right now. fle(a)com 😉
has a really snazzy site, so Kelley decided to seek some advice and
spiff ours up a bit.

echinoidea - the AIM names are a great idea. several of us chat together
in a room occasionally... i'm allison331

more soon!

BSL
