Official UTMB class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am not sure about the FAFSA, I hear that if you get it in by march 1st it is better but the actual due date is not for a while longer. Has anyone got anything else from UTMB at all? I was just wondering if anyone had, I havent. thanks!

I haven't heard anything from them since I sent in my first envelope. I figured I'd be inundated with things immediately, but I guess not.

i went down to galveston this past weekend to look at apartments and stuff, and i was just wondering if anyone else had done the same. for those already in galveston, where do the students usually live? i went to some places on the west side of the island, and also checked out some places near utmb on the east side, and i am needing some more info. where should i focus on??? ideas???

i have a few more questions too-

- is the campus wireless?
-what do the students do besides study?
-did anyone learn how to surf- i saw a lot of people in wetsuits out in the water surfing.
-where do people study?

if anyone has some info on these things please help my out- im sure all the other newbies need some direction too.

i'll be heading down there to check out apartments too. one ms1 said that ebbtide apartments are good. then again, he also said that the villa marina is a good apt complex contrary to what others have said. i dunno who to believe!

Hey there

I just got back today from Galveston looking for apartments. I managed to get a nice one for pretty cheap at Captains Landing (I clocked it to be about 15 at the max mins from campus). The rent for it was 499/mo cause they were running a special now on rent. It kinda sucks cause I will end up paying one months rent without being there but it was a better option then getting stuck in some crap hole (which many of the places I looked at were not so nice). Not right next to campus either but it seemed to be in a nice safe community, gated with plenty of parking, elevators, etc. AS for the ones I looked at here were and are my opinions:

The Park at Cedar Lawn: Very cool looking, old marine hospital and some other units. not well kept up, lots of water damage in the one they took us too and the outside of the buildings didnt seem to be paid a lot of attention to. cool setting if the apartments were in better shape I would have totally wanted to live here.

The seasons: nice place, some appts brand new, and it was 705/mo all bills paid (elec, water) can reserve one now for whenever, dont have to start the lease when you are there, however could only do this on the new units. Older ones were still pretty ncie 585/mo (?) all bills again, cant hold them, but can be put on wait list. 300 buck deposit I think...

Village By the Sea: Pretty nice too, kinda pricy for what you get, upwards of 600/mo with no bills paid, big deposit if i remember

Island Bay Resort: Not to bad, more expensive and not very well kept up. Lots of dry rot on the one they showed me, not a good sign...They had cool ones on canals though, but they were pretty pricey.

I went through a real estate agent and she sort of told me what was going to be run down, which she said most everyting right by the school, and if you dont mind driving a short distance (15 mins at the max aint that bad really) you will get a much nicer place for the same kind of money. She did say that Chateau Lafiette is probably the best complex by the school, and that it is very nice and like 675 all bills paid if I remember, but that it is hard to get in there because its in high demand.

Well thats about all I can think of right now, it seems like not a bad place really, some nice architecture around ( rental houses too, something I may look for after the first year, I wanted to secure something so I didnt get screwed so I sort of stuck to complexes this time). Also it took me a little over an 1hr to get to Galveston from Bush Airport and 25-30 mins to get to some heavy suburbs of the Houston Area. So its not that far really if you are a baseball/basketball fan like me or want a city trip here and there. Hope this helps ! Good luck! Cant wait to meet you guys!!

Congrats everyone. I am a 4th year at UTMB and I am usually on on the Emergency Medicine forum (I find out about where I go in less than 2 weeks so I look forward to feeling the same excitement you guys do now on Match Day).

I just searched for UTMB and found this site. Here's my take on housing as a student in Galveston.

Here's what happened with me and my wife (Amy, who is also a MS4 now). We came here together from Lubbock. She got an apt at Villa Marina and so we split a moving truck and left both of our stuff at her apt. I got my apt 2 doors down from her later but left my stuff in her apt. When I got to school a week before Quest, I walked in Amy's apartment and we were robbed. They took TVs, stereos, microwaves, bikes, other valuable goods, and the kitchen table... THE kitchen table.

I remember early in anatomy when I was studying late one night when I kept smelling something funny. I would check the vent and the stove to make sure it was off. Then there was this loud banging on my door. It was 1am and it was some dude. He yelled that we needed to get out since the apt above me and over one was on fire. Later, I was told it was suspected arson.

In March, Amy's car window was smashed. She had kept her stereo removable face in the glove compartment. However, the theives still bothered to break in and check the glove to steal it.

Still keep in mind we have had classmates who had no problems. Guess we were the unlucky ones. By the way, although this sounds negative, we had a great UTMB experience. We got married after that first year and moved to Friendswood in an apt behind Baybrook Mall. It was okay to commute during 2nd year since classes start at 1pm (except for some POM small groups and other random stuff). The parking garage permit is almost a necessity if you are not going to get there early for hunting at noon. However, I have had the cheap student permit for years 1, 3, and 4.

We moved to Dawn by the Beach for 3rd and 4th year (although we did all of our 1st semester in 4th year away - see www.geocities.com/andykahn/MS4.html). Its been nice here on the West end of the island. It's right next to Wal-mart and only 10-15mins from UTMB.

I would be happy to answer as many questions as possible. I am at the end of my time at UTMB and have lots of good and negatives to share if you are interested. It has been mainly good and feel well prepared for residency.

I am a fourth year at UTMB. Here are my thoughts:
-I live on the west side. I would say that half the class lives near school and half live on the west side or off the island.

-The campus is wireless. Students have access to wireless networks (for personal use) in the student center, allied health building, library, and the hospital cafeteria. You just ask at the student center for the wep key and you can use your own computer/pda in those areas. There is also wireless internet on some of the floors and in some of the clinics, but they will not give you a wep key for a personal laptop/pda in those areas. You can use the UTMB laptops/ computers in those areas though.

-I have not learned how to surf, but a few classmates surf. Galveston is not the best place for surfing. The waves are not very big unless there is a storm. More of my classmates do boating/fishing.

-As far as studying, there are lots of options. We have a great student center with group/private study rooms and big study areas. There are also lots of places in the library. Students can also get keys to small group rooms to study. The hospital caferteria is an option as well. Galveston just got a starbucks and there are a couple other coffee houses you can study at. Then there is always IHOP.

-THere will be plenty of time to do whatever you want besides study. Depending on your personal situation (single, married, kids, etc), there will be a group of people to hang out with and do whatever you like to do.

Does anyone know of any three bedroom apartments around there too? Two of my friends are heading down there with me, and we all wanted to find an apartment together if possible.

Another question for the MS4: does UTMB's close proximity to the TMC put your clinical exposure at a disadvantage? I thinking no since i've heard that the UTMB hospitals cover several counties and also treats those from Mexico.

That's a tough one. Try Port Au Prince or call a realtor to ask or one of those online apartment searches, but I've never really looked for more than 1 bedroom. I have a friend who lives on Post Office Street about 10 blocks from School. He rents one part of the house and I believe there may be 2 or 3 others that rent other parts of the house. I'll ask some classmates for you...

I think there is plenty of exposure. When you are tired of seeing patients as a 3rd year and wanting to go home but have so many on your census or on the clinic appointment list, then you wish there were less! But I admit that Galveston has Houston on one side and ocean on the other, but yes, we get lots of indigent patients from south Texas and the valley. Lots of indigent patients also come from east Texas from areas between Houston and Beaumont. The TDCJ Hospital is pretty big (Inmates from all over Texas) and have lots of sick patients. I must say that you do have the advantage of doing more procedures and having a bigger role (in my opinion) with the poor patients who are thankful to have your (the med student) help. In contrast, having rich patients with private insurance are more likely to get annoyed that you come in at 5am to ask questions/do a physical each morning when they know that the resident will do the same at 6am and then the faculty at 7am. I got to deliver a couple of first borns and the patients couldnt speak English (but better than my Spanish) and they thanked me! Many others wouldn't want me delivering their newspaper, let alone their baby (but I had help from residents or midwives). The TDC patients usually have Hepatitis, HIV, TB, or MRSA so that's a negative, but they are happy to be in UTMB with good food and cable TV so they are happy to see you and let you do lots too. I did 4 away rotations during the Fall of my 4th year. (Dallas, Louisville, Sacramento, Orange County, and actually also a diabetes camp in Kerrville, TX) Those were great experiences and they each had some advantages over UTMB, but our hospitals are so much nicer! Better computer systems with old records, labs, order entry, radiology, etc.

I admit that it's sometimes tough seeing lots of patients that do not smell the greatest or some that are the poorest of the poor, but as I write this thread, I realize that I owe those patients so much! As I realized that the patients were grateful to have me poke and prod as I fumbled around learning how to be a doctor, I became more confident as I saw more and more patients. I am very happy with the medical education here and you will be a great doctor if you want to be.

Thanks for the question. It made me realize how fortuate I have been to rotate here...

thanks for the input! let me know about the house if it comes up bc i'm definitely interested. I've got another question to ask: what's something that ya'll would change about UTMB or something in which the school could do better?

Andy, Thanks for the great input that you have given us! It is good to see all sides of the situation

Has anyone heard anything from UTMB lately? I sent in my FAFSA last week but I have not heard anything at all from them since the first mailing a month ago, thanks!

I'll ask my friend if he can either post on this forum or if he will email me the details. WELL, what I would change... hehe, we students complain a lot so bear with me. I do understand that sometimes, what is best for me isnt best for everyone. Also, somethings are easier said than done, but here are my thoughts...

1. I think the Honors, High Pass, Pass system is no different from A,B,C. What I didn't like is the fact that there is a limit of 15% (I think) of the class which can score Honors. I heard this grading system was designed to reduce competitiveness. It seems to make things more competitive in my mind. There definitely are not any competitve issues at UTMB. People make great review sheets and email them to the class and things like that. I thought that if you made a 90 or whatever they want to set as the limit before the class begins (like in college and high school), then you should receive an A. If they want to curve and help more people make A's, then thats great also. In anatomy, the cut of was 98 (there were bonus points for the exams and other activities). So the 40% of my class making a 92-97 got High Pass (don't quote me on the exact numbers, but I don't think I am exaggerating too much and also the circumstances are different with each class). I guess it rewards the top 15% by giving them the highest grade so maybe I am wrong. Still, if everyone does really well, I think maybe everyone should get a good grade (and they will argue High Pass is a good grade, but whatever).

2.PBL's are a nice break from lectures. I feel bad for the other schools who have tons of lecture. That's why none of their students show up. I think our attendance is pretty good since we have less lecture hours and certain days, everyone has to come to come for PBL anyway. Because of PBL, we get less lecture time and lots of independent study time which I love. If you need to be spoon fed, it will be tougher. I think if you use that time wisely, you can do great and be well prepared for boards. My beef with PBL is similar to the one I have with the OSCE's. Subjective grading is frustrating if you get the grader who gives everyone a Pass or High Pass because they don't bother to think about it or think that those are good grades when some classmates get an Honors when they get a grader who gives everyone Honors because they are nice or they think that is a good grade. I guess with our system, we must continue to have PBLs and OSCEs. They are definitely good for learning, but frustrating if you get short-changed (in your mind). My ideas (which may never be feasible) would be to change the grading to Pass or Fail for PBLs and OSCEs. That does seem to take the incentive away from doing better than the minimum and so it is not perfect either. I also thought it would be great if instead of having a facilitator who just read off the answer sheet, just have the students meet with the answer sheet. I guess this required students group studying would be nice as far as exchanging info and "teamwork" as they desire, but students could just read the answers so that they could bail out early and not go through the steps of learning and thinking it out. Some like that and others dont so this idea has flaws too. Plus some facilitators are experts in the field so that is great, but you may get stuck with a facilitator that doesnt know anything about that field.

3.I would also remove the requirement for senior surgery. Well, lets expand that. I heard A&M and some other schools around the country don't have any required senior courses. I think it is great to be able to choose what you want. If you want to learn about something, sign up for it. If you want to slack, sign up for those easy rotations. If you want a letter of rec from someone, then you have those options. Of courese the current situation is fine. You get plenty of elective time/choices and some flexibility of what you get to do on each required rotation: like which Neuro rotation (pedi vs adult clinic, wards, consults, neuropath) or which Acting Internship (I heard UTSW requires everyone to do an Interna Medicine AI which would stink for those going into peds). I think this may be a power struggle between departments or just tradition so the curriculum remains this way. It's not that bad at all. I have learned lots. I am going into Emergency Medicine so almost every rotation is helpful for me. I just figure people going into Derm might want more derm and less Neuro. I do understand that 3rd year is required to include medicine, surg, ob/gyn, psych, inpt/outpt, family, and peds since they are the basis of medicine (traditionally) and they are on step2 and 3 of the boards.

I must say that there are lots of things I wouldnt change. Having classes predominantly in the AM for year 1 and mostly in the afternoon for 2nd year is great! The organ based curriculum is nice, and I love taking one class at a time. when you finish a test, you have a weekend off. If you go to other schools, they take 3 or4 at a time like in college. so when they finish a test, then they have to worry about the next one. i did more traveling in med school than college i think because of these free weekends.

I complain, but I learned a lot and did fine despite those things that frustrated me. I didnt get honors in every course and usually it was not because of the system (but if they hadnt... or if they would have... whatever). i studied my hardest and got plenty of good grades, but sometimes you still dont get honors and thats okay. the system can never be perfect and i accept that (but easy for me to say that now that i am almost done!). but if you do your best, you will be in great shape and you will know what you need to know.

Thanks for all of the advice, fourth years. I read all of it.

As for the FAFSA, I got an email yesterday saying that the school received my information and they gave me a link to a site where I need to fill out more stuff specific to UTMB. However, you have to sign in with a student number and a PIN, and I have no idea where that PIN is supposed to come from. Anyone know?

Thanks!

Your pin is your date of birth i think YYMM and the ID is your SSN, i think it said that on the email they sent, hope that helps, double check the email just to be safe

I dont think i have gotten an email- anyone else??

Hey, that worked! I read the part about the social security number but they just didn't phrase it clearly enough for me 😉 Thanks again, you saved me a phone call!

When did you fill out your FAFSA?

when i was visiting apartment complexes this past weekend, they wanted a move in date. so i was wondering when are you all going to move to galveston? (or if you are already at UTMB, when did you move?)

Hi guys,

Wow, when I was applying last year I didn't recall many UTMB SDNer's....congrats to all of you. I'm a first year, and we're on our last, and toughest block (neuroanatomy) before an 8 week break, thank god. Actually its 2am on a Friday and what am I doing....here on campus thinking of new ways to procrastinate!!! If any of you have questions shoot me a pm. I think some of the 4th years summed it all up pretty well.
Basically I'd say try to find a place close by early, make sure your financial matters are taken care so you'll get your money, settle in and relax!!! Oh yeah, as soon as you get access to the anatomy lab, go raid it for old copies of the Netter's and Grant's Atlases (your bibles for Gross). It will be very helpful during lab and save you from having to buy an extra copy, which you'll leave behind anyway cause it'll get juiced up pretty good! Some of you may want to look into the pre-matric program, it does give you a bit of an advantage but at the expense of losing out on some of your summer. Various groups will be throwing parties at the start of the year so make sure you go to those, good time to socialize and make friends. Well gotta go learn some neuro, see ya'll soon!

I submitted my fafsa feb 29th and still have yet to recieve an email from utmb! anyone else have this problem? who emailed it in the first place- could someone help me?
thanks

Maybe you should call Enrollment services, I got my email like just a few days after I submitted my FAFSA. Their phone number is:

409-772-1215

Hope that might do the trick!

hey guys,
i went to galveston this weekend to look for apts. i think i will like utmb...but most of the island is a piece of trash (esp. when looking for decent housing...by campus). unfortunately , my friend and i decided to look at apts. without going through an apt. locator. save yourself some time and sanity and find one ( i went to island realty-mike little- however, this was close to the end of the day where i was at the point of realizing that i would have to live in a crack house just to be close to school). however, the last two apts. i saw, st. thomas at campechene(or something like that) and the seasons ( both are past 61st street, close to the seawall and were decent.) most of the apts. on galveston are old and not maintained well. also, a new apt complex is being built on the island(i forgot the name)...i wish it was open now b/c looking for a decent apt. in galveston is insane. i feel that if i have to live in a crack house i shouldn't have to pay regular rent of $500-600. call me picky but some of the places seemed pretty unsafe and sketchy. be careful and smart and work with a locator or a realtor, unless you are good at finding a good place. galveston is it's own very "special" place. 😱

Did Anyone else get information about the Summer Prematriculation program? I was wondering what that was all about?

hey jherr,
I called last week about the prematric. program. did you send in the confirmation letter they sent with your acceptance packet in feb.? they are supposed to be sending letters about the program this week - i was told. they said they could only take 60 people this year b/c of limited resources. but call and speak with sandra garvock or someone in her office or someone in student services/admissions(ask them about the program)and find out if it is too late or whatever. when i get my letter, i will post about it. from what i heard it will be early exposure to anatomy(with cadavers), study skills, maybe some clinic exposure. the dates for the program are 5/24-7/2 (6 weeks).

Hey Nyyka-

I actually never got a letter with my acceptance about it. I just got one today date 3/10 about it and it said I had to send it in by the 24th. They sent a sheet along with it about confirming, etc if I wanted to go. I was curious about it, whether it was worth it or not, etc I didnt know anything of it till today so thats why I asked. I may not be able to do it because of timing with moving and all ( I am going to be moving from VA during may) so it may not be possible for me to do this. I read the post about housing too, I kind of agree with you, I went with a service and the only places that I found that were decent were near the west end of the island, I got mine at Captains Landing which is right near the seasons ( i liked that place too) try Captains and see if you like it they were not to bad on pricing. Thanks for the info on the Premartic program, post if you get more info soon thanks!

Jared

hey Jherr,
i think they provide housing for you in their dorms...they might even give you a stipend. how long will it take you to move. could you move after july 2nd? when does your lease start at Captain's landing?

Nyyka

My lease starts in plenty of time to go, but the problem is I have some family commitments that are during May and June and that is one reason it may be impossible for me to go. I wonder why I never got any letter about it until now also?

Jared

Hey all,
Congrats on getting in to UTMB! You will have a great time there. My wife is finishing up her fourth year, and I know she enjoyed it. I'm a bit sad to be leaving, but the thought of going to San Antonio (UTHSCSA!) and leaving those giant Galveston mosquitos brings a smile to my face. Beware!

Since we're moving, a cute little apartment will be opening up in August. About one block from UTMB, it's the second floor of a quaint old carriage house, located just behind one of those giant old refurbished victorian homes in the historic district. It's ideal for one student, possible for two. It's got one bath, and a deck. We pay $525/mo. PM me if your interested.

Hi Everyone,

I just found out about this site and here I am. I'm an Austinite...so it would be cool to meet up with any other austinites going to UTMB next year.

Haven't checked out the housing conditions yet, and probably can't till May.

I"m very excited...and can't wait to meet all my classmates.

for anyone who received a scholarship with their acceptance packet, was the scholarship listed on your award letter? mine wasn't. i am in the process of waiting for a call back from financial aid....but if anyone knows?

I think that this question has been asked, but I'll ask it again anyways. Does anyone know if UTMB gives out a list of people entering into the class of 2004? I couldn't find one while surfing around on the crappy website. Even my school of only 1200 people has a better website!

Also, how's senioritis been this semester for everyone still in school?

has everyone that has matched to utmb gotten something in the mail/email from them since the acceptance packet, or am i the only one?? in the email where it tells u to log into somewhere with your pin and social, what are you supposed to fill out? thanks

barca- i think their website sucks too!

Nykka-

I had the same problem! I dont know what the deal is, I called like 5 times today and left 2 messages with 2 different people and never got a call back....I wonder if this is just standard op? I dunno, let me know if you hear anything too and I will do the same!

KBKaggie
as for the email thing, what you are to fill out is the financial aid application that is online it should be under the Financial Aid tab when you log in, did you get the email? I got it after I sent my FAFSA in.

I have to agree that the website sucks, my school of 1600 people has a way better website too. I find myself looking at the same info like everyday as I piddle my time away (severe senoritis, my god its killing me) However, the new match results are posted today if you just go to the UTMB main site it should be listed there on the news thing under the select a page deal.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Jared

I think the UTMB students did well. I think those that had to scramble either did not interview/rank enough programs or they just were applying to tough fields (derm, plastics, radiology, etc). We had several ortho and radiology matches into good places. I am going into Emergency Medicine and it looks like we got 4 of 16 spots in Dallas and 4 of 10 spots in Houston's EM programs. Only 2 derm spots, but it's derm! After 4 years, it was weird to see the culmination of all our hard work in one envelope. You time will come sooner than you think!

My advice: Work hard and have fun... and come do an away rotation at UT Southwestern for your 4th year EM rotation like I did... i guess i will be a fellow or attending by then when you come!

Nykka,

Hi, i received a scholarship award letter with my acceptance letter, and it listed the amount and that it was from the UTMB school of Medicine Alumni Association. Then it just said to attend a luncheon sometime during the school year with more details later.

- Think everyone I know is suffering senioritis about now.

I finally got to talk to someone today about the scholarship issue, she told me that the med school office hadnt sent them a list with all the people who recieved them yet, and that she had been trying to get it from them for a while, and that hopefully they will send it soon. She had me decrease my amount by the scholarship amount so they could add it in. She also said that you can change the amount of your loan at any point in time without a problem, say for example you take out more than you need during the fall term, realize you dont use as much money, and can take less upon the start of the spring term, whcih is nice, possible to get an idea of what you expenses will be and then adjust from there, hope this is some help.

is anyone thinking of moving to LaMarque or Texas City? I don't know if they's be too far, or if a lot of people are moving there. I want to live around other students.

I wouldn't reccomend living in La Marque or Texas city, the drive and traffic would suck. I live right down the street from campus and I can walk to class in 10-15 minutes. The work out center is right down the street, with the tennis courts and track close by. Very useful if you're late to class or stay late studying or like to work out. For people looking for housing definitely check with an apartment locator. All the students here congregate either right around campus or close to the other end of the island...there's some really nice places there too. Alot of the stuff in between is ghetto. Right by the UTMB field house and Ferry Road are alot of nice apartments that are in the 500-600 range, some all bills paid and cable. I live in Ebbtide, I have friends in Villa Marina (there's 2 of them, both pretty nice), and Casa Caribe here by campus. Yep living close by definitley has advantages. As for all the financial aid and paperwork, just hang in there. Try to talk to them in person, or shoot them an email, I'm a first year and unless I walk into the office and sign in, I hardly ever get them by phone. It'll get really bad as the start of the year draws near. Just keep trying. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am looking for a job for this summer in galveston before med school - anyone know anything? I just want something to keep me busy. Something fun would be a plus. 🙂

wow, i'm not the only one. a fun job this summer would be great. if i can't find one that's medically related.....i'll try starbuck's ( i crave frapucinno's)

I remember that last February, UTMB posted a list of all those who matched at UTMB for med school. Have any of you seen anything like this anywhere? I called them and asked if they were going to post that info soon, and they said yes, but that was a month ago.

I tried looking all over the website but found nothing. Maybe they will...maybe they won't.

Does anyone know when we'll get some more info from UTMB? I still think that I was accepted, but they haven't really mailed anything home yet.

When's everyone thinking of moving down there? I think I'm gonna move down at the beginning of August if I get an apartment (fingers crossed) with my friends.

I hadn't heard from them until yesterday when they acknowledged that they had received my FAFSA. There is some additional form that you have to fill out for them before they issue your financial award letter. It was kind of unnerving not hearing from them. I guess I figured they'd be just sending me things to check up on me, you know, see how I'm doing, say hello, etc..., but I guess not. I live in Galveston now because I work at UTMB and my parents live here, but I think most people probably move down here around the beginning of August. It's probably kind of hard, I'd imagine, because you can't get a loan check until around the beginning of school. I've been really poor since moving into my new place. I don't see that changing, though...

hey if anyone was having trouble with a scholarship not showing up on their fin aid letter mine finally got fixed on friday and now it reads what it should.

Has anyone clicked "accept" the financial aid offer and filled out the entrance/exit interview forms yet? How bad are they? I guess I was under the impression that they wanted you to have an idea of what your budget would be at the time that you chose which amount of money to borrow (low, mid, high), but then I started the entrance interview and it wanted me to estimate every little expense and I had no idea what to put. Since I clicked "accept" does that mean they will lend me the said amount, or will that depend on my answers to the other three forms?

Thanks in advance

Vr4nut-

As far as i know the fin aid letter just says HOW MUCH you can take from them and it can be altered at any time. I talked to someone about the same thing and they said that the amount of loan, etc can be changed again before the fall starts, before spring starts (in case you see you dont need as much money taken out) and so forth. I dunno about the budget I just guesstimated it and filled it out I dont think its anything that bases you fin aid on.

Hey guys,
I haven't been here for a while...nice to be back. As far as fin aid questions, I filled out interview questions. There's two of them from what I know. They are long and ask for references and addresses of you, spouse, parents, and all these other info. And its a lot of reading. If you are familiar with how the loans work then you aren't in for much. I sat there and read through most so it took me a while. Its long and time consuming....that's it. Other than that its pretty common sense. Also if you guys took out loans other than the direct federal loans, make sure you follow up with them and usually they will have a similar set of questions or so called "interview" in their website. UTMB will send you an email in regards to this. I am not sure if anyone else except me has gotten it.

I read all the helpful posts here from UTMB MSs....I love UTMB simply because everyone is extremely friendly...wow, its really impressive to see this nowadays particularly in a med school. It is such a cooperative, relaxed environment and everyone lends each other a hand. I can't wait to start.

I would greatly appreciate if any of the current med studs would post the parts of town/apartments/housings to be avoided. I am actually freaking out as I heard some not so wonderful stories about crime in galveston. Of course being the wimpy girl I am, I am desperately trying to seek a very SAFE reliable apartment.....any advice is much appreciated. I am looking for an apartment close to campus, one bedroom, and SAFE.....since I will be living by myself I need it to be SAFE....hehe...enough said i guess 🙄

To all fellow upcoming MS1 students that I didn't get to meet.....welcome abroad and please feel free to PM me as I would love to get to know yall!! And to the wonderful medical students at UTMB....you guys rock! thanks for all the helpful hints and advice.
