Starting up another c/o 2016 applicants thread to ask a question about transcripts.

The website is a bit ambiguous with this, but are we not supposed to send transcripts until we've completed and submitted the VMCAS and supplemental applications?

I'm not planning on submitting my VMCAS until September, at least, and I'm worried that if I wait to send in transcripts, they won't get there by the deadline if this is the case.

Anyone have any input? Perhaps some c/o 2015ers?

I have been wondering the same thing and have added it to my list of questions to call and ask VMCAS about one day, but have been so busy and I work nights and sleep during the day, so I am like hardly ever up between 9 and 5 when they are open. I might email them to ask. I am pretty sure you can send in transcripts before you actually esubmit your VMCAS application, but not positive.

Also, did you see you can start your supplemental now even though you can't submit it until after you submit your VMCAS application.

Super excited to see this thread started, I am getting more and more excited about applying by the day!

I think calling the school might give you better results than calling VMCAS. But please let me know what you find out 🙂

I'm not an Ohio state student myself, but I'm pretty sure the rules are the same everywhere. I also think this question was addressed recently in previous threads, but here goes..

You should be able to send your transcripts to any school any time. They will place them on file and will tie them to your application once it has been received by them. Trust me, they know why they're getting them. I sent all my transcripts well in advance of final submission of app materials/secondaries. VMCAS has nothing to do with transcripts and states repeatedly that they are to be sent to the school directly, who should be contacted with any transcript related questions/concerns. Hope this helps.

I would tend to agree with you, however, Ohio's website has stuff like this:

Academic Transcripts: Students who complete a VMCAS application are required to submit all their official transcripts...

And...Please do not complete the supplemental application until you have first completed and submitted your VMCAS application.

Sooo I'm a bit confused. But thanks for your input!

I see. Well, those remarks sound similar to those found on most school's websites with regards to the transcript part and none of those statements imply that you can't send them in advance of submitting your VMCAS. I'm willing to place a very confident bet that you can. I believe legally schools are obligated to hold on to transcripts they receive for a period of time anyway before removing them from their database, but again don't quote me for sure. Nonetheless, e-mail or call the school would be my best advice. I'm sure that's the quickest way to get the most accurate response.

I think that you can send transcripts when you like, but the supplemental can't be submitted before VMCAS. The supplemental is online and separate from the transcripts and GRE scores, which are mailed directly to the school.

Careful there. If you apply to a school and don't get in, you have to resend your transcripts when you apply again the next year. They only hang onto them if you get in.

Exactly.

Hi All,

Remember, veterinary schools vary in terms of their requirements, so please make sure you check with them on their specific policies regarding supplementals.

However, as rule of thumb, I've found that supplemental applications CAN be submitted at any time so long as you have STARTED a VMCAS application. This is because they need the VMCASID on the supplemental application.

Again, just a rule of thumb... check with your schools directly though.

Hey guys! Hope everyone is doing well and your apps are coming along! Just wanted to let you know that if you have any questions at all, I just got a job in Student Affairs at OSUCVM and would be happy to find out the answer for you. Also, don't hesitate to give them a call-the people in Student Affairs are so, so nice and very willing to help. They want you all to have the correct information, so your questions are encouraged! Good luck everyone!

Me! I'm reapplying this year. I am SO looking forward to filling out the supplemental again. 🙄

EDIT: OMFG. The supplemental is so....small... this year. Only 2 questions?! Anyone who did it last year should know what I mean. Although I have to say that I preferred last year's essay-style question about different animals handled. This drop-down menu thing with tiny little boxes is going to make me insane. NUMBER of animals? Seriously?

Figuring out/justifying the hours worked with each species (and total number) plus ranking your skill in handling each is a bit of mental gymnastics. Ballparking to the best of my ability as I didn't count every cow, sheep, dog, cat ,etc that I've ever worked with.

Last year it was "list every species you've worked with in animal handling (not veterinary) and all the things you have done." That was at least a little easier than justifying number of animals and hours! I've been working with horses for 18 years! :bang:

I would expect any information you provide to them in that section to be used against you during an interview. I.e. if you claim to be proficient in restraining canines, cleaning teeth, etc I would anticipate a question such as "how do you normally do this procedure?"

The essay question will require some thinking too. Haven't given it much thought.

Yep, anything you claim be able to back up! From another angle, make sure you can back up whatever your LOR's say you can do too. Obviously you can't control what they write but just keep that in mind. In my interview I was asked to explain step-by-step how to intubate a dog, because one of my LOR writers said I'd done that. I had, but I'd only done it once and the vet was actually guiding my hand. Luckily I remembered the steps and everything involved, so I told them I'd done it one time and explained how to do it and they seemed satisfied. So every little thing you do, make sure you understand why and how it's done, just in case!

Hey question for you all, for the species listing part, for Equines, did you guys list out Horse, Pony, Donkey, etc? Or just include Equines all as one unit?

How did you guys formulate how many animals you have dealt with in each species, and hours? Goodness

Hey guys, for the 80 hours experience form... do we need to get that signed and filled out by each veterinarian we have worked with? Or just a convenient one?

Any veterinarian under whom you have worked 80 hours is just fine =) I had a couple vets I could have picked; I just chose the one who was handy at the time!

I just got around to finally starting the OSU supplemental app this evening and I can't believe how short it is this year. I applied 2 cycles ago and I think I had to write 4+ essays, all on difficult topics. Am I missing something?! The open-ended essay prompt is a challenging one, but I am quite relieved that I don't have quite as many topics to cover this year!

Just popping in to ask a quick question:

For ohio's supp essay...are you taking the question to mean:
1) Why are you a special snowflake?
2) Why are you a good fit for the school (ohio)?

The question's really ambiguous and I had written it as #1 but I'm wondering if I should include some #2 as well (since there's so much room to write!).

Does anyone want to swap supplemental essays and review eachothers? I am up for that if anyone wants to trade with me. I have a rough draft done now, but have no idea if I am on the right track 🙁.

Just finished mine (gave it the last polish) and will be submitting it shortly. My suggestion would be to highlight why Ohio can serve your future career needs (e.g. how it can prepare me for a career as a research veterinarian). I also used the space to elaborate a bit more on my undergraduate research (e.g. what didn't go in my VMCAS, how it has shaped my interest in infectious disease). If you stick to that rough outline you should come up with a pretty cogent essay. I recommend taking a peek at the CVM's website and doing a bit of digging/research.

Good luck.

Hope everyone's applications are going well!

Just a quick note, since we are getting a lot of phone calls about this ('tis the season!). This year, Ohio State is not verifying the receipt of individual application materials. That is, if you call and ask if we received your 80-hour experience form, we aren't going to look that up at that time. We've got SO many applications that need to be processed and filed, and looking up individual items is super time-consuming. So what we'll do is once we've received all your application materials, you've been entered into the computer, and your application is complete, we will send you an email notifying you that we have all your materials. Similarly, if you are missing something we will also email you and let you know what we need, and give you plenty of time to send it in and complete your application-so don't worry 🙂

Good luck guys-this first step is almost done!

This animal handling form is making me crazy! I'm having a hard time deciding where to classify certain species. I'm thinking I will list "pocket pets" under companion animals (my list includes ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and rats). I have also handled rats in a laboratory setting so I am thinking about listing them under "other" exotic/lab also with a different list of procedures. Does this make sense to anyone? We see a fair number of what I call "small furry things" at the practice I work at. Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated!

I put my handing with guinea pigs, ferrets, and rabbits under exotic - because they are typically classified as "exotics" by vet clinics. They could be considered companion animals as well - but so could horses - so you know its splitting hairs - I wouldn't worry about it too much - just make sure your description of your handling is clear

I have a quick question, I was under the impression the supplemental had to be completed in one sitting, similar to VMRCVMs...is this the case, or am I going completely crazy? Thankss, I just don't want to open it if I don't have enough time to complete it in one sitting ha

I don't believe that is the case because I have logged in and out of mine several times over the past month!

Perfect thank you so much! I'm not sure why I was thinking that 🙂

How did everyone distinguish what was considered "handling" the animals vs. "veterinary duties" ? I don't want to leave things out that could be important but at the same time I don't want to be obnoxious and add to much. GAH!

EDIT: So this is my understanding, restraining a dog while a doctor gives a rabies vaccine is "handling" but actually giving the shot myself is "veterinary" so I should go more with the restraints I have performed than the actual hands on procedures?

Last minute, per usual, is my MO.

I have a quick question. I thought I saw on the supplemental that it was due Oct. 1st (I.E., TOMORROW). This is a fallacy, n'est-ce pas? I looked on the website, and it said the 3rd. I would very much like to apply to OSU but don't think I have a chance if I'm pulling an all-nighter essay!

You're right - it DOES say the 1st on the supplemental, but the 3rd on the website. Major admissions faux pas! Given that they want your VMCAS submitted BEFORE the supplemental, I'm am guessing that the date on the supp is wrong.

But now I will have to get that stupid thing done after work today. Arrrrrrg. 😡

I am very confused about this! The example they give is nail trimming or teeth brushing which are both "procedures" imo since the "handler" would likely be restraining the animal while you trimmed its nails. This is sort of a silly example but from my interpretation I have:
Rabbits- Restrain for physical exam, nail trim, IM/SQ injection, restrain for teeth trim, shavedown under sedation, syringe feed, oral dosing of medication, SQ fluids

I have similar lists for the other exotics I have handled and a much longer list for dogs and cats. Let me know if I am totally off-base b/c I haven't submitted it yet!

Got my login info. and activated my account. My application is in review and I can see they have my transcripts and GRE scores 👍. This is getting so real :soexcited:. I have a feeling I am gonna be obsessed with that page.

Where do you see info about your application? I also activated my username, but can't find a link anywhere to anything about vet med from the myosu.edu page. Do I have to go somewhere else??

buckeyelink.osu.edu and then go to "Application Status." =)

Oooh sorry, got ahead of myself because I am so used to working with this system! After you go to buckeyelink.osu.edu go to "My Student Center" and then log in, THEN go to Application Status.

Oh, and just FYI, I brought the supplemental due date discrepancy to the attention of the folks in Student Affairs today-it was an oversight and though there's nothing that can be done about it now they will make sure and triple check that in the future. Sorry for any anxiety it caused anyone!

Hmm, just tried that. I clicked on My Student Center, but it says I'm not authorized to view the page (ie, I can't login). Help EG! 🙂

Did they give you your name.# and a password? (I never had to go through this particular step b/c I was an undergrad at OSU.)

Hey all! I was just checking the status of my application and for my transcript status, it says "initiated". Anyone know what that means? I sent in my transcripts like 2 weeks ago...so they should be there.

I talked to them this morning, and they haven't matched up all application materials yet. My status says the same, but that doesn't mean they don't have them. Just give it some a bit before you worry that they don't have your stuff.

I haven't even received an email with my username and password...I'm planning on calling on Monday but I was just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat? This is so exciting and so scary at the same time 🙂

Any time, guys! I remember the anxiety well; it was just a year ago that I was in your shoes! You've already got the first big step under your belts, so hang in there-you're doing great 😀
