Megs... honestly, in the end it really doesn't matter where you go to school as long as you 1. do well in your classes and 2. nail the boards. nobody can say that you don't deserve a residency spot if you can do both. it's possible that you could do well in the G-town program and get into a better school... that might have better faculty, more research funding, better location... etc. BUT it's also possible that you might not do so hot in the program and end up with nothing. my advice is that if NEOUCOM works for you and you are acdepted, you should go.

Very much agreed.

I think I'm OSU bound... 😀

But, in a different time/place, I would have no hesitation in going to WSU for the reasons mentioned above.

Have you heard back from WSU? what other interviews have u got coming up?

All the best

Yesterday I had Case interview and UCinny interview is on January 10th .

YAY!!! I just got into Case!!!! 😀 Can't stop laughing...!

Congratulation!!!!

Now only if could get my lazy ass to write those damn essays. 😳

How were you guys notified about your interview at OSU? Was it by an e-mail saying that your status page had changed or via snail mail? Does OSU send out post-secondary rejections or on-hold status through e-mail? Thanks and best of luck! :luck:

All of my communication with OSU (interview, acceptance) has been electronic. E-mail says to check the website...the website tells you what happened. The minute or two it takes to go from the seeing the email through logging into the website is like torture...

So that probably means that receiving an e-mail from OSU wouldn't necessarily mean good news then. Wouldn't that be kind of harsh to see the rejection or hold status post-secondary on the website? But I can see that it would be more efficient. (you are the weakest link, goodbye!)

Just curious, have any one of you who've been accepted into any of the Ohio schools been required to pay a deposit? None of mine have asked me for this.

Oh really? How were you notified about this? And when?
The letter of acceptance on the website said it was required, but I haven't received the official paperwork yet and I think we were accepted at the same time. Hopefully UCLAstudent can give us more info.

You get a letter in the mail...i guess mine was ~2 weeks after the online acceptance. You just sign a little slip of paper and send it and a $25 check back to them.
They also email you a "disclosure form" about the same time that you have to fill out and fax/mail back. This is just to ask you if to your knowledge you are a rapist/druggie/psychopath etc. If you are one of these things you have to provide an explaination.

So 2 weeks would put us right around end of this week, beginning of next.

BTW redrocks, I did receive the disclosure email - did you? I printed it out, filled it and faxed it back to the office.

Off the topic of OSU, but does anyone who interviewed at Case on 11/19 know when we're supposed to hear back? My interviewer said within a month, but I'm burdensomely impatient!

Is Ohio State's Alternate pool ranked for out-of-state people? If so, do they let you know your rank?

I got my post-interview decision from MCO today: waitlist. That was one of the most disappointing decisions I have ever received in my life. I know there's still a chance I could get in but I wanted the straight acceptance so badly that this waitlist just feels like a dagger through the heart.

Sorry to hear the news size_tens. I too was an out-of-state waitlistee at MCO. So don't fret too much. Did they happen to assign you a priority class/ranking?

Here's the stats for the class matriculating in '04. These numbers have not fluctuated much from year to year:

Total number of applications received: 2905
Ohio Residents: 985
Non-Residents: 1920

Number of interviews: 436
Ohio Residents: 264
Non-Residents: 172

Number Acceptances Offered: 301

Also, note that historically the waitlist for out-of-state is almost completely gone through each year, as opposed to the slow movement of the in-state wait list.

Taking all this information into account, you were quite fortunate and must be academically adequate to get an interview at MCO (9% of out of staters' get the interview, the rest get the 'boot'), let alone any medical school.

More than two-thirds of those interviewed, are offered an acceptance to MCO. This percentage is better for out-of-staters that have interviewed, as the waitlist tends to move faster for them.

Also, keep in mind that MCO constantly reevaluates applications throughout the academic year. Send them a letter of intent (make it good)!!! Call them to ask what some of the factors that went into the waitlist decision. Inform them of your activities, etc.

You're almost there. Don't give up yet!!!

Best of Luck,

Regards,

-Salty

holla to all those who love CCLCM. i finally got my letter today! I'm so officially in.

SaltySqueegee,

Do you happen to have interviewed/acceptance data for Ohio State? (Out of state)

Thanks.

Sorry, not off hand. Being at MCO, I have knowledge of MCO's statistics.

In general though, gaining an interview at any school will give you a 30-60% chance of acceptance. Generally speaking... ...

If I attended med school in Cleveland or Cincinnati, do you think it would be okay for me to bring my mini cooper? What is the weather like...how are the winters?

I have never lived in Cincinnati (yet..next year though) or driven a mini, but I can vouch for Cleveland. Winters are cold (usually 30s or lower in the heart of winter) and you do get reasonable amounts of snow and icy roads. You are right next to Lake Erie. But they do salt and scrape when it gets bad out, so if you have snow tires, anti-lock brakes, and front wheel drive you should be ok. If you don't have FWD or ALB, then I'd say not to bring it.

A very close friend of mine lives in Cleveland and drives a Mini Cooper S - awesome car. He hasn't had any problems with it - I mean, it handles really well; I'd be much more worried driving some land yacht. You might want to try and find a place to garage it though, since there is quite a lot of snow and salt. I've always left my cars outside, but it just means you have to spend a fair amount of time with a snow brush.

Here are the figures from OSU's website:
total applications: 3806
non-resident applications: 2278
total interviewed: 777
total acceptances: 354
class size: 210
non-residents in class: 66

They don't break down the interviewed/accepted data by resident/non-resident, but as a state school, I find it hard to believe that nearly half of those accepted were from out-of-state. Given the large number of non-resident vs resident apps, though, I suppose its possible.

Hehehe. My g/f is getting a Mini Cooper S w/ John Cooper Works performance package and navigation! it arrived in the states yesterday. I gotta teach her to drive stick tho. (this is relevant cuz I'm going to school in Cleveland and she's from Ohio as well).....yes....good....

Are you worried about having a FWD on snowy roads? I know I am...

Yeah. Im worried about the whole AWD vs FWD v RWD debate. I don’t have a car yet….but I plan on moving to Cleveland as well. Should I get a AWD or 4WD car/truck? Or is any other car okay for the snow? Is there a big difference for FWD and RWD for snow/ice? I have never driven in the snow or ice….so I don’t know if I am great at it or not

Also a dumb question. I am thinking about driveways….if you live in a house…are you expected to dig your car out of the snow everyday to get to the street? How much does it cost to hire someone (Approximately to do that?)

Yea, I was looking through the Case brochure and it says that 3rd year students will need a car (because the hospitals are spread out). FWD in snow is doable (but a pain). Whatever you do, RWD is the WORST thing you can have in the snow. I've driven both FWD and RWD cars in various conditions, but I would be scared to drive in a RWD in snowy/icy/wet roads. Obviously most of us don't have the money to just buy a new car, so we'd probably bring whatever we have (if anything). If you're gonna buy a car and you're gonna be in cleveland, I'd recomend an AWD car (or SUV if you want...I don't really like SUVs but to each their own). If you can't get AWD next best thing is FWD.

I grew up in a place where there was a lot of snow during the winters and we shoveled our own driveway every morning. It's not that bad. I don't think you should pay someone to do it.

If you've never driven on snowy or icy road before, I'd be careful the first time. It's a lot more tricky that you'd think.

uclabruin -- if I get into CCLCM, I'll shovel your driveway for $20/day

HAHAhahah... Ucla Bruin... Save your $20 Bucks a day, you'll need it living as a medical student. I own a small geo metro with FWD and it does just fine in the snow. Just don't drive like an idiot. Give yourself plenty of time to stop. When turning in snowy/icy conditions, don't use the gas, just idle through. It may seem like your crawling, but at least you won't end up like the impatient numbskull in the ditch on the side of the road.

Just use your common sense... ...

Also, a RWD car would probably not be the best investment here. You may want to think about an easily repairable small american car that you can repair with duck-tape while in the mid-west; then sell the POS when you move back to warmer climates.

-Salty 👍

cntd...

Also, if you own a cheap a$$ car that sucks, with only a crappy am/fm radio, it is less likely to be broken into, or ripped off. FYI. This is not the time to have a 'Bling-Bling' car. Trust me... this can be a frustrating problem depending on where you live.

Ditto on the salt damage to the car. When I moved out here, I noticed the first rust spot on my car within a week!!! 👎

Well I got on the OSU "alternate pool". Anybody know anything about that? Do many people get accepted off it? Thanks!

you can always get Xibit to pimp it for you later on.

I ended up getting put 'on hold' after my interview with Case. Is this the same as waitlisted? Does anyone know what the chances are of getting accepted after this?

Thanks for all the info. I guess I will try to buy an AWD car/SUV. I hate SUVs. Anyways I was looking at cars....I was thinking that a cheap car to get with AWD is a used subaru. Or I could get a Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV4 (such girly cars).

Hope you get in too! Maybe you can teach me how to shovel snow? Is it really that hard? I cant imagine waking up (an hour?) early to shovel snow? If I had a SUV could I just drive through the snow and not shovel it? Sorry Im lame as hell...

Oh an $20 sounds like too much. Maybe $5.

this just about sounds very shi#$y a$$. not that i was gonna bling it anywhere. Is car theft/vandalism that rampant in cleveland?

Should I really get a (gulp) Ford or Chevy?
