Ohio State 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone concerned about the 84% NAVLE score? I'm note sure how much I should factor it into my decision? My other option is a school with >90%, but I'm more interested in Ohio's program. it is just concerning that the scores have had a downward trend and we can't see the results of the new curriculum yet

Here's Dean Moore's response to the university-wide change. Text copied below and original email included in screenshot.

"Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
As you should have seen in this afternoon’s message from President Carter, Ohio State is navigating significant changes in response to new state and federal policies regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). These developments are complex and continually evolving, and we understand they are likely raising questions and concerns within our college community.
The College of Veterinary Medicine is following the university's lead and will continue to update our college community as we learn more. Our college’s goal is to ensure that we remain a place where all people feel welcome, safe, respected, valued, and a community where everyone can be successful and thrive. It is also important to note that we will do this while adhering to the new university guidelines and regulations announced today, and in compliance with applicable state and federal policies and laws.
The values we uphold, such as You Matter, You Are Not Alone and You Belong, represent our unwavering dedication to each incredible member of our College of Veterinary Medicine community and family. Your positive impact on our mission areas of education, research, service, and outreach is truly valued.
All along, our efforts and initiatives have been focused on fostering an environment that provides fair and open access to education and employment for all people regardless of anyone’s background, attributes, or other factors. Anyone that has been here in the past or is currently here has earned your position within our college. Don’t ever question that you earned and deserved your place at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
I want to emphasize and reiterate President Carter’s comment about the commitment to Ohio State’s history of having always been a place where every member of our community matters, where each of us is seen and heard, and where we all have opportunities to succeed. This will not change moving forward.
Protecting all students, faculty, and staff in our college so that they can all be successful will remain our North Star. We will continue to celebrate the richness of backgrounds and ideas that have made us strong, and which have shaped our rich140-year history and traditions. We will uphold the time-honored value of academic freedom that has long defined excellence across America’s universities.
During these times of change and uncertainty, we encourage you to take advantage of the various resources available through the college and university. Information about the college’s offerings can be found here. Details about the Employee Assistance Program are available here.
Please be reassured that we are committed to the success, satisfaction, and sustainability of every member of our College of Veterinary Medicine family. We appreciate your continued dedication to the college and to one another in helping everyone navigate these challenging and uncertain times while maintaining hope for a better tomorrow for everyone.
If you have questions, please reach out to your supervisor, advisor, mentor, and/or other members of our college leadership team. Although I don’t and won’t always have all the answers, I want our community to know that I have an open-door policy, so please reach out to my assistant, Kristy Terry (terry.402), if you would like to meet and discuss how any of this will impact you and what the college can do to assist and support you and/or others.
Once again, THANK YOU for all you do and contribute to our college community.
Sincerely,
Rustin

Interesting thank you for sharing! I know from a former classmate who is trans that they have had a really difficult time at tOSU so I really hope this doesn’t set them back even further 🙁 I guess we can only hope the school puts their words to action.

If you attend a "why osu?" weekend they will address this head on and have a discussion with you about what factors play into this is, and where they are going moving forward. If you can't attend I highly recommend connecting with admissions or students for their thoughts and for information on the curriculum change, the pass/fail rating, and class schedule for 1st year.

Hi! I am super excited to be accepted into tOSU vet class of 2029! I also was fortunate enough to have been accepted into some others, and have been trying to get as much info as possible before making a decision. I was wondering if any current vet students would be willing to set up a zoom call to answer questions, or give your honest opinion of your experience below? Thank you in advance for your help!

Current first year here, can answer questions as needed. I do recommend choosing the cheapest vet school option. You will get a good veterinary education anywhere but certain schools will give you a greater debt load

Is anyone waiting to accept their seat until they've offered financial aid? Will accepting or not accepting your seat actually affect that? I want to accept my seat, but I've been told to wait. Is it worth waiting?

Does anyone know or have any idea how many recruitment/1st year scholarships they have typically given out in past years? I am trying to wait patiently but want to get all of the information I can. I believe they’re based on admissions scores

I very much doubt that waiting to accept will affect your getting a recruitment scholarship - those are reserved for applicants with exceptional stats or stories that tOSU wants to include in their class. But admittedly I don't know for sure about that - I believe I received my scholarship offer 2 weeks after admission. It 100000% will not affect how much you are offered in loans - you will receive an offer for the full COA based on how you filled out your FAFSA.

I'm waiting on the off-chance that one of my schools will offer me a great financial aid deal I can't pass up, but if you're already sure you're going to commit to tOSU I don't think there's any harm in accepting your seat now

This is a great point. I too am waiting to hear about financial aid packages to then compare and be certain I'm choosing the least expensive option. But it is making me nervous about not locking down where I am going. I fear I learn about financial aid packages late and then have only a couple days to compare the information, which certainly will be presented in apples/oranges format. Given the current environment and the dismantling of the Dept of Educ and unknowns about loan programs - this whole thing is way too much.

What living areas do people recommend for first year students? I haven't committed yet but I want to start browsing. Ideally one bedroom with not crazy ridiculous rent ☺️
I've been told by friends familiar with the area to avoid Whitehall, Bexley, and Grandview Heights!

Avoid due to cost or safety @catsandsnakes ?
Bexley is where the rich people live.

I live in Short North, which has some sketch areas, but it’s been overall pretty okay.

… I think technically I live in Italian Village, actually, but right on the border, so it’s functionally Short North

Thanks @supershorty - living in Short North, do you think it's safe to bike or walk to campus during the day and night?

I would not recommend that at night. But it would also be quite a hike from at least the part of Short North I live in.

I have some decisions to make, I know things change from year to year, and nothing is guaranteed. But realistically, what do you guys think the chances of me being pulled off the waitlist are? I am ranked number 2, in state.

Hello, I heard Ohio does flipped classroom. Does this mean that lectures will be 100% online and we only go into classes for case discussions and quizzes?
I did this for my whole time in pharmacy school and I thought I would finally be able to go back to traditional learning 🙁

I think you have good chances of being pulled off the waitlist at #2 IS. Like you said, obviously I can't guarantee that, but I would be prepared to receive an offer after decision day if you choose to stay on the waitlist.

Hey I’m a current student. The flipped classroom model we use refers to our usage of pre-recorded lectures to aid in student learning. Prior to classes, it’s encouraged to look at pre-work prior to lectures but most, if not all, of our lectures are in person. However, these lectures don’t always go over all the material just the key topics. Each course is run different and each professor has a different style of teaching which can shake up things a bit but for the most part you watch the prework and then go to class

Anyone with an IS acceptance know if they will be attending elsewhere?

Any accepted First Years receive the email about financial aid offers? I have seen 2 people on here announce they received scholarship offers as a first year. I'm asking about the promise of "financial aid offers by the end of March" that was mentioned at Accepted Students Day. I'm hopeful to make an informed decision between schools and am really leaning tOSU, however, if these forums have taught me anything it's "go to the least expensive school option" - so, anybody receive the financial aid offer or have insight into when we'll receive them? We are less than 30 days away from April 15.

I also received my scholarship on the 13th. The email stated "As an out-of-state applicant, you are eligible for a scholarship to help reduce your costs for the first year. Based on this year’s available funds, we can offer a scholarship of $[amount]".

It does seem like the amount offered varies from person-to-person. I am unsure what the criteria was to be awarded it 🤷‍♀️

Helpful - thanks @catsandsnakes and @re0289! I imagine something is eventually coming to my box.........

i talked to sandra dawkins after today’s info session about their aid process. she said a first round of scholarships has already gone out but they’ll continue to award more as more funds come in. seems like they’re hoping to send out another round before decision day but they might also award more scholarships after that too.

Do any current students have experience living downtown? Specifically on/near high street. Wondering how the traffic getting to/from school is

Not a student, but I live off High. Depends on where on High you'll live, but I live in the Italian Village area and it typically takes me 5-9 minutes to get to work. Getting home at rush hour can take 15-20 minutes if I time it wrong.

Does anyone know what the highest scholarship amount anyones heard of was?
Thanks for this question, I too have this question......as I am trying (without all the information) to estimate which school will be the least expensive. I attended a Dublin information session over the weekend and they basically said that "they will have to work on something for our North American clients" - meaning they acknowledge the chaos of not knowing whether student loans are available with the dismantling of the Dept of Educ. That is the only school where I have seen even an acknowledgement of the situation. For OSU, I am struggling to determine cost (also taking into consideration that at the OSU Admitted Students Day presentation the top of one slide read "Anticipated 5% increase for tuition in FY 26.")

I can say I got between 10-20k. Wondering if anyone got more

Has anyone in state heard anything about scholarships yet?

I'm really trying to make my decision and finances will certainly be a factor for me!

I had written to tOSU asking about when possible COA estimate breakdowns with financial aid offers would be available. Just so everyone knows, they replied today that estimates can always be found on their website and they hope to distribute student-specific aid packages by early April.

Howdy everyone! I'm likely going to accept my seat (OOS), and I was wondering if anyone knew about how to find the facebook group for our class. Do they email you once you've accepted your seat, or is it just something your email will be able to search up? Right now I'm trying to start my search for roomies to get a good apartment 🙂
