I had applied and got interviews at 3 other schools, but I am gonna turn them down just based on what I really want to do and what my significant other wants to do as well. I don't want to make him go anywhere he can't or would not be successful. We are going to move to Columbus and I will try to reapply next year hopefully with in state residency. How bout you? Anywhere else you also looking at?

Thank you sooo much! It feels great to have people behind you, even though you only know them through this forum (which I have grown to love). I know this process is really random, competitive, subjective, and there are tons of amazing applicants, but I still wish I could read the minds of admissions committees to know just what exactly they are looking for.

For all wondering, I asked what number they got down to last year. She said high 60's, but she stressed that's only for last year and she can't say how much it varies because she didn't have the numbers from the previous years.

I'm actually thrilled with the waitlist at all, even though it's a high number. I know it's a tiny tiny chance that I could be accepted, but it's a chance nonetheless!! I was just beginning to get really down with all these rejections lately.

That makes sense, there's no reason to go somewhere that you both wouldn't be happy. I am still waiting on 3 left, got rejections from all the others. I have an interview at UPenn next Friday and I just have to wait patiently for the others.

I am actually planning on doing the same thing... moving to a different state if I don't get in this year. Penn is just not my first pick. I was trying to figure out if I could be considered in-state if I'm a resident by the time classes start (but not by application time) but it looks as though it varies from school to school. Do you know if OSU would consider us in-state for this year's cycle if we moved before August?

So maybe we'll be hoping together again next year (although I hope not)!

Good luck with your other schools, and I do hope that the waitlist gets down to your number so that you can get in. I would think that if the move to Ohio was done early summer one could be considered a resident by the time application goes out. I think it takes a year at the least to be considered a resident.

No, you will not be considered as IS until you have lived in Ohio for at least one full year. So if you are coming to OSU from other states, you will have to pay OOS tuition until your second year. Sucks, but at least you can get residency the last 3years.

If you move this August, you should be IS by next August. I'm not a residency counselor though, and I would suggest you contact the registrar, explain your situation and see what they tell you. I guess the bigger question would be when applying with hopes of receiving In-State consideration do you have to have been living in the state for 1 year at the time of application, or simply by the time you would matriculate?

I'm friends with someone who works in the admissions office. Here is what I asked:

"Hey ***, since you are my inside source to the Vet school admissions I had two questions for you. My friend is #6 on the waitlist. 1) Is their just one waitlist or is their a separate one for instate and out of state? 2) From past years do you know how many people from the waitlist get invited to the class? Thanks."

"***, there is only one wait list, it combines both out of state and in state student applicants. Typically it is mostly out of state applicants and many of them get into their home school and decide not to come to OSU (bad decision!). Therefore, I would say if he is sixth, there is a great possibility he will be your classmate. I don't know for sure, but we have typically went pretty far down on the list. If this year is like past years, we will go down to at least 40. I hope this helps and don't tell him it is definite, but the chances are good!"

Your "inside source" is apparently not very "inside" because they are wrong. There are TWO waitlists, an IS and OOS. The instate list only has 9 people on it, the OOS has a lot. The IS doesn't move very far, OOS gets through a decent amount usually into the 30's or so.

Thanks for the info!! I should probably call and ask this, but I'll try here first:

- When do the lists start moving? Do they wait until they have heard back from everyone before contacting off the waitlist (i.e. April 15th) or will they start contacting alternates beforehand?

- How many OOS people does Ohio admit? I heard they only admit the exact number of OOS seats they have? Is this true? If so, that explains the long alternate list!

Hi, I've been following this thread for a few weeks but this is the first time I've posted. A friend of mine is now in her second year at OSU, and is pretty certain that the year she was admitted (2007), they went as far down as #39 on the OOS wait list. She was number 12 on the list, and I remember that she had to wait for a decent period of time before she found out she was offered a seat.

So, it seems that the list increased quite a bit from 2 years ago to last year, and it also seems that fewer people applied this year compared to the last application cycle. If you're waiting to hear about wait list, remain hopeful! I know I am...

So...someone asked me this question about a page ago on the forum. Sorry it has taken soooo long to get back to you (and more than likely someone has answered it but I will be honest and say i did not read all the posts between that question and now). Exams have been tough the last two weeks....be prepared! Anyway, YES the buckeye is a tree...the leaves are what is on the helmets of the OSU football team and you will see buckeye necklaces made out of the nuts during game time (they kinda look like chestnuts).

Are tests spread out over 1 week, a few days or does it vary depending on the class? What time do classes start and end on a regular day? How long is the lunch break? Also, kind of a random question, are hedgehogs legal in Ohio?

Exams vary not only by class but by year. I am only a first year and last quarter exams were pretty well spread out and on regular intervals except for histo which only had one midterm and one final. This quarter I have had two exams a week for the last two weeks, one quiz this week, and and I have two exams again next week. I talk to upperclassmen and they say that second quarter first year is one of the hardest though. I am not sure what next quarter will bring but I am crossing my fingers for something similar to fall quarter. Second year they only have midterms and finals and I am not sure about third year (except that its supposed to be relatively easier and that a lot of students get bored and sign up for A LOT of electives). Oh and we get an hour for lunch every day. I am not sure about hedgehogs but I will try to find out for you. First year we get class from 8 am until whenever (varies from 2-4 sometimes earlier). I know that in future quarters it changes to 9am (though I am not sure how long it lasts) and a lot of electives start at 7am (they go around the core curriculum so they typically are before classes, at lunch time, and after classes). I've been lurking around this forum for a little while and finally made myself join today! I'm so sorry about your rejection smashley. I know exactly how you feel. I found out through email last week that I got rejected. Absolutely heartbreaking. OSU was my number one choice (just like last year)...after last year's interview and rejection I did an application review with them to find out my strengths and weaknesses. They gave me some really good goals to set. I DID EVERYTHING THEY ASKED ME TOO....got more (way more) animal experience, improved my GRE score, retook some chem classes (got all A's), got stronger recommendations (2 vets and an associate dean), and completely re-did my personal essay. Needless to say, I was feeling way confident this year when I went back for my interview....I felt the interview went well again this year like last year....and then the wait started. One of my friends who is graduating undergrad this year also interviewed at OSU...she wasn't overly impressed (and has interviewed at many other schools), but she got a call the very next day saying she was in!!!! To say the least, my level of frustration is through the roof....what more do they want me to do???? I'm confident I will be starting vet school this fall (it just won't be at my dream school)... I am, however, doing another application review with OSU because I just have to know why I didn't get in again this year. I highly recommend the application review to anyone that didn't get in....good luck to those on the waitlist, and congrats to those that made it in. I'm jealous!

kiki, I am also very sorry to hear about your rejection as well, esp after you worked so incredibly hard to do everything they told you. I still have to talk to the consult, but I kinda already know where my faults lie: not enough vet experience. I am moving to Ohio this summer to establish residency so that my chances may increase for next year's application cycle. Please let me know what they say when you do the review again for I am as curious as you now as to what went wrong. I had to call Amber to ask about my status; the first two times I called in later January, she had no status whatsoever; I at least thought I might be waitlisted lower on the list, but the rejection after waiting so long was just a killer. I am glad that you are confident that you will be still starting vet school in the fall (what school?) even though it may not be your first choice. Good luck to you, and again, I am sorry about the OSU ordeal.

Thanks. I wish, in some way, I could apply again to OSU for one last chance...but I just don't want to wait another year to start school. This was my 3rd go around with VMCAS (only the 2nd time applying to OSU). I think if everything somehow fell through, and I was going to apply again, I too would move to Ohio ASAP to be considered in-state...my sister and her husband and 2 babies live in Westerville (which is right outside of Columbus)..... I have gotten one acceptance so far, from UCD in Dublin, Ireland...and I have yet to hear from Kansas, RVC in london, Michigan, Western, and Florida. I should be getting at least 2 decision letters by the end of this month and I know western doesn't mail out letters until mid-march.

The same thing happened to me! They changed my application status online. Then I waited a week and a half. Then I called, and was rejected. That was 2 weeks ago. I still have yet to receive anything in the mail despite that I was told something was coming! So frustrating!!!! Luckliy, I still have a few more shots this year! I am truly sorry to everyone who was rejected like me. It's not fun! 🙄

Just an FYI, Ohio no longer has contract seats with WV. WV changed their seats due to the fact that OOS tuition at OSU is so expensive (makes sense - they can pay for more seats at other schools).

Oh that is frustrating news! It seems crazy that they have an alternate list into the eighties yet don't expect it to move until April 🙁.

Exactly! I am totally thrilled about Penn and Virginia, so having this big Ohio question mark is tough! I want to give it equal consideration when I finally choose but its hard to when I have no idea if/when I will get in 🙁

There is always the option of depositing at your top pick of Penn and Virginia and then if Ohio comes through you decide if you want to lose your deposit and go to ohio. Doing this is legitimate depositing at more than one place at the same time is not.

I am still waiting to hear from OSU, Penn and Tufts. I go to school in PA and my boyfriend goes here too, but lives in michigan right near ohio. So I'm not really sure where I would want to go. Ive had interviews at Penn (put on hold) and Tufts (waiting......😕) so who knows....

Hey guys... some of you asked me to tell you about my application review for this cycle... this was my 2nd year applying, interviewing, getting rejected, and doing a file review with OSU...read my post (#430) of this thread to get my background info before you finish reading this post...

I had my review with Dr. Brandt on Monday (2/23/09). I told her that I didn't really need a full review with pointers (because I have been accepted elsewhere), but OSU has been my #1 pick, and after doing everything suggested last year I just wanted to know why I didn't get in. Here comes the heartwrenching part....wait for it.... I missed getting accepted BY 3 POINTS...which is a teeny tiny margin. She felt horrible having to tell me this. For their process, they have categories broken down with point values (academic, financial awareness, job awareness, motivation, references, etc...). Dr. Brandt told me my interview went stellar, and I couldn't have done any better. For most categories, there was only room for improvement of half a point to a point...she said where I could have easily made up those 3 points would have been in my references...I was floored/shocked/felt let down by my evaluators. Dr. Brandt said the written part of the eLORs were really supportive and positive, but there was also a section with like 10 statements and they had to rank me... with 0 being the poorest, and 5 being the best... she said my evaluators gave me more 4s than 5s...had I gotten better ranks, I would have gotten the points I needed. So I feel horrible, and frustrated. My 2 vets are amazing and have been great to work with...they also, both got in their first try and don't quite understand how hard it is to stand out and get accepted...unfortunately, they didn't understand that you need to be scored near perfect (they viewed a "5" as meaning there was no room for improvement, which they don't believe in, hence giving me more 4s than 5s)...Dr. Brandt also said that this year had an extremely competitive pool of students (much more so than in past years....so had I scored similarly last year like this year, I would have gotten in last year)...I asked her how I didn't even make it to the waitlist if I was only 3 points away from an acceptance...she explained that there were probably about a 100 or so other students that also scored 1-3 points within being accepted, so it goes down to luck of the draw on who got waitlisted....I was not one of the lucky ones... 🙁

So, although it may be absolutely heartbreaking to hear you were this close to getting in, it is way better to know that you didn't blow it in the interview....that you should have gotten in, but there aren't enough seats... accept the fact that maybe you should have done some things differently, or made choices more carefully. I REALLY RECOMMEND DOING A FILE REVIEW...it truely is helpful, and hopefully it will help you get in next year if you are applying....
