OK State c/o 2017 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a new member living in OKC (will be moving to north edmond area) working on my pre-veterinary classes still (8 left and maybe 10 left before my bach in bio is finished!) and I just wanted to thank ALL of you for this helpful thread. I am going to be applying to OSU when I am ready and all of this info is helping me immensely! I lived in Stilly for five years so I do know a lot about the town. I did love it for the most part. I feel like I have a million questions and don't even know where to start. For now I will continue to read 🙂

Nice to meet you Megan! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask or PM any of us.

Okay I'll start out with a few...

1) Should I be getting volunteer hours in for all areas of animal/vet care? For instance do I need large animal, small animal, exotic, shelter and vet hours? --If I get a job at a clinic, do I still have to volunteer at a clinic as well? I only have about a year and a half before applying (not this oct but the next time) so I really need to get to work! I am unsure as how OSU has you list your "animal" or "vet office experience".

2) Is it true that it's only $15,048.00 per year at OSU for residents? That seems really low for vet school compared to what I've been reading!

1. Some schools like diversity of experience, but it's really not that big of a deal to have experience in all areas. All of mine was in small animal. If you have a job at a clinic it should be easy to rack up hours. OSU uses VMCAS so VMCAS rules apply when defining animal vs vet experience.

2. I think it's up to 18,000/yr now with the latest tuition increase set to come into effect in the fall. It's still one of the cheapest IS tuitions in the country.

Thank you!!! 🙂 What are your "typical hours" in vet school at OSU?

Totally depends on the semester and the year and whether or not you include studying time

The first year curriculum has changed a bit since Lissa and I went through, so I'm not sure what the current schedule is like. In general, five is the latest that labs will run and lectures are 8-11 or 12ish, but that depends on the day. After first year, you get elective choices that can make schedules vary as well.

I think that's still pretty much how it works: about 8-11 with anatomy lecture and assorted labs in the afternoons. They also split your class by alphabet so for the smaller labs there are 1-3 and 3-5 slots that switch halfway through. That shouldn't happen until parasit though...

Thanks a lot! That is all info I didn't know... had no idea 🙂 Did both of you have bachelors in bio or animal sciences or only pre-reqs?

Megan

I'm relieved it typically starts at 8am because right now I own a home in OKC and we will be buying in North Edmond (I-35 area) by the time I apply... so a commute like that won't be too bad! I read somewhere that they want you within 15mins when you're on call for certain clinicals your 4th yr though... so would have to make arrangements I guess.

I have a B.S. in both Zoology and Microbiology. If I could have a do-over, I may have just done micro, because that's the one I could have found a job I liked if vet school hadn't panned out for me. So that's what I would do - imagine life with no vet school and try to pick something you would use anyway, then just make sure you take the pre-reqs. If you need any help with that, You should contact Anna or Robin in the admissions office and have a meeting or exchange some emails. They're both very helpful and happy to clarify things or make sure you are on the right track.

Yeah, you will need to live in town for at least some of 4th year. Lissa can comment more on that and on commuting because I think she probably lives about the same distance away as Edmond and commutes here.

Had a b.s. in animal science with pre vet option. Thought about going to grad school instead of vet school when I first graduated undergrad, but ended up moving to Kansas for a year with the hubby and worked a couple ag related grown up jobs and ended up working at a small animal clinic as a tech before I applied. Had some experience shadowing at a mixed animal practice while in undergrad and did foal team and pre vet Internship at osu. Our schedules as a first year seem like we don't start until 10am for the first few weeks then 9am the rest of the semester. I'm sure I will be there earlier every day to study since the house has too many distractions.

I have a BS in zoology. I live in Ponca City which is about a 35-40 minute commute depending on time of day. If you are on call you have to be within 15-20 minutes of the VTH. Most rotations have a couple nights of being on call or working emergency shifts a week so you will definitely need to stay at least part of your weeks in Stillwater. Not every rotation has after hours duties though. If you have in house patients (you will on several rotations) you have to come in at night to do their nighttime treatments and to walk them etc. I own a house in Stillwater that I rent out to vet students. This year our renters get cheaper rent so that I can stay there when I need to. For the equine surgery rotation you are on call for the entire 3 week period because they need everyone to come in to help with laying the horse down and moving it around etc. I actually enjoyed commuting 2nd and 3rd year because the drive gave me time to wake up in the mornings.

My bachelors is in English Literature, with a minor in Journalism. 😀 I got all my vet school pre-reqs after I had my degree and took some extra electives. We have several people in our class who live farther out as well, and they manage fine for classes. As Lissa has said, you just have to make arrangements for 4th year.

Hi Megan!

I am also a c/o 2017 person about to start. I am also one of the rare ones that got in just off of pre-reqs. Non-tradional all the way around here. 🙂 Feel free to PM me as well if you have questions.

When I lived in stilly I used suddenlink. Wasn't too thrilled with it, but not many choices.

I'm over at McElroy Hall for a parasit slide session. They have changed my class' old mailboxes to the Class of 2017. Thought you guys might be excited to know you have mailboxes up here now.

Haha! I filled out the assessment. I bet they are going to think I am a dual personality that is unstable. I have no issues making friends and chatting with people and like to just make things up as I go, but am very logical about it and don't mind schedules either. I like people in social situations, but would really still rather be by myself. Have fun with that, interpreters! :meanie:

Haha I was the same. I like schedules, but if they change I can adapt. I like my alone time, but I don't mind small groups either.

Yay mailboxes!!!! I've always loved mail, even if all I get now is bills...

How many rotations do you have left, Lissa?

You guys have two mailboxes at school, one open and one locked. The locked one is where you will get tests back and the open one will be where people put flyers, etc.

We are on rotation 5 now so 12 left. It's going by pretty quick.

I think I am going to enjoy the open one more than the locked one.

Gonna head over to the uniform stop today to make sure a medium coat is appropriate. Is there anything I should go ahead and get while I am there, or do we do this the first week of classes?

Also, HRL, are we the only two '17ers? I haven't seen any other SDNers to meet up with. Too bad our last names are far apart, woulda been fun to be in the same zoo tech group.

Oohh I don't know your name... are we facebook friends? The only person I've figured out is lissa because of her name and all the baby pics but I don't know how stockery it would be to add her...

P.s. I think abner was also a 2017 but I haven't seen any comments from him/her lately

No, I just was able to figure you out from the class page cause of your local and I remember you from interviews. I don't think non-friends can see my page, but Lupin isn't hard to figure out cause he's pretty much all that's on mine. I'll shoot you a friend request. 🙂 And hooray, it's raining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I was out riding this morning and stuck close to the house because of a scary looking rain cloud, got sunny, then downpoured... really weird summer...

Also where can we get blades and gloves for anatomy. I have a mostly complete dissection kit dr meinkoth gave me... not sure what I'm missing from it.

Seems like you are getting a ton of unpacking done. I need to run into glencoe and get a low tire fixed but I am just enjoying sitting on my couch doing nothing for my last few hours way too much.

I pretty much just have the guest room to get in order and I need to clean out my car. Otherwise, all good. I do need a dresser to fit the rest of my clothes in cause my closets in this house are pretty small, but I'll probably get that off craigslist at some point.

Knight's medical and the uniform stop should both carry pretty much everything you need supply-wise during your vet school career. The lady at the Uniform Stop is super sweet and awesome and there is a "vet student discount".

I think you may have sent me one, too? Got a friend request from a 17er with a super cute fuzzy dog lol

That is Lupin. Yep, I sent one to Lissa too. I haven't posted in ages, but I may start since I have friends scattered from here to NY and LA now.

I was wondering why the last thing was 2010... I thought fb was messed up.

So today was reconfirmed that I'm an introvert and forced social interaction is exhausting!

I sat right by you and talked to you the first day at the very beginning silly.

Well no one fell off the stage today, not even the nuts, so that was good.
