So, I have heard that no more acceptance offers are going out until after the final feb. interviews. This poses a question for me, how many acceptances have been sent out? They haven't updated their status page since after the oct. interviews.

At Friday's interview they said that the last of the first 140 acceptances had been awarded on Thursday (Jan. 10). Between Friday and the last interview date in February they are only expecting to send out letters of deferred or declined status. February 24 is the final board meeting where the last 20 initial acceptances will be determined and sent out along with the rest who are either wait-listed or declined.

yeah hearing that was a little disheartening, but I'm still trying to be positive...it's not over til it's over right? 🙂

Definitely not over. Between the Jan. 11th interview, this week's interviews, and February's interviews, I believe there are about 125ish candidates. There are still 20 seats still remaining, plus those that will open when the deadline hits for those who've been offered admission to make a decision about where they plan to go. I'm guessing that between those two events, our odds are 1 in 3 or better.

Yes! I got my deferral in the mail today!

haha (thinking happy thoughts 🙂 no rejection letter= celebration!) anyway just glad to know I'm still in the game.

does anyone know if I should give the admissions office an official updated transcript or can I just print off an unofficial and walk it over to the BSEB?

Deferral ditto. I requested a sealed copy just to be on the safe side.

...and the wait continues...

anyone interview lately? 🙂

Yes, deferrals are definitely not a bad sign. They accept a good amount of people from the waitlist! I wonder when they are going to update the OU admissions site?

So.... Has any other acceptees received the nifty e-mail with the c/o 2012 blog page link?

i know there are still some interviews left...my friend has hers in a few weeks!
and i can nearly guarantee she'll be getting one of those last 20 spots! she definitely has near a 4.0, i'm assuming good mcat b/c she's for sure one of the smartest and hardest workers i know, and she's instate. good luck everyone!

Her stats sound really good! How come she got such a late interview invite with such high scores? That seems kinda strange...

That's still strange, though. I submitted my application a couple days before the November 1 deadline and got a November 29 interview... my stats weren't great or anything, just above average.

Did anyone interview on or after 17th of January and get a letter?

I'm still confused about what they said. Is it rejection or deferred letters within 10 days and accepted/waitlisted after February 24th? Or is it just no letters at all until after February 24th?

I want to know now!!! :scared:

Smart and hardworking don't always equal high MCAT scores. I've known lots of bright people who didn't do as well as they would have liked on the MCAT.

well, i haven't received any letters after my interview.
but i thought i heard one of the admissions ladies say that if you're rejected or deferred, you would get a letter about 10 days after the interview.
and one of my friends who interviewed on jan. 11th got a deferral letter....
so i don't know.. whatever... i guess....

it's going to be a long february.

Although I am not sure, I think once you are deferred, you get waitlisted, not rejected. Someone (doctor bagel??) I think mentioned this in this forum topic.

Yeah, it's not a 100% guarantee or anything, but I've just never seen anybody report here that they got deferred and then rejected. Honestly, I think if they want to reject you, they know pretty much immediately.

So Dr. Hall spoke to us the other day and said there are 22 spots left. She also wanted to emphasize that being put on the waitlist is not a bad thing because historically lots of spots here are filled from the waitlist.

I actually got deferred and then rejected last year. 🙁 Maybe I just looked really hopeless last year.

Okay, I'm having some serious issues right now about this whole application process and I get no support from my dad. He urged me to apply to other schools (schools I didn't think I'd ever get in to--he paid for the fees and flights to interview). Now that I have other acceptances he's pressuring me to just drop OU. 🙁 Are any of you having this same dilemma? Maybe I'm just weird, but I kind of really like it here. I don't have a fear of leaving Oklahoma and branching out into new territory (something a few friends have suggested). It's just that I have a very strong support system here, not just with my family but with my culture as well. I'm also pretty sure it's going to be really expensive up there. Additionally, my mom's health is getting progressively worse. She's already had a heart attack, is on dialysis, is diabetic, and may still have cancer (she hasn't seen her oncologist yet). She's told me that she supports where I go, but she wishes I would stay here... even if I were too busy to see her all the time. I guess just being close makes her feel better.

Anyway, any thoughts?

Wow, that sucks. I'm hoping you'll have a better outcome this year. :luck: And I'm sorry you guys have to wait for a whole month 'cause I know that won't be easy.

Azadi,
I'm sorry to hear about your mom 🙁 if it were me i don't know if i could leave her for 4 years if she was having health problems! good luck in making a decision though...Hopkins would be soo hard to turn down!

and yes, i've heard of people getting deferred--> rejected, it's definitely a possibility though not one i'd like to ponder...

22 seems like such a hopelessly small number! time to start studying for the MCAT again 🙄

Azadi, I can't tell you where you should go to med school, but I definitely think that this should be your decision, not your dad's. It sure would suck to go somewhere to satisfy someone else, only to be miserable with your choice for 4 years. You are the one going, so you should be free to decide what you want.

Azadi,

PreMedMommy is right. You've gotta make a decision based on what you know is best for your situation, not what anyone else thinks they know. That being said, if you're waiting on an acceptance from OU, I wouldn't wait to hear from them if it will jeopardize your acceptance elsewhere. If you have time to wait, take that time examine your priorities and goals. If your status at OU is already known, then you just have to take a long look at what's most important to you. No matter where you go, you'll be a doctor in the end.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother... I know that's a difficult situation. Keep your head up!

I've searched the forums for this already and I can't find anything...

I've heard that admissions committee meeting for OU is open to the public, which I thought was interesting (maybe it's not really that interesting). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had actually GONE to the meeting before and what they thought about it. I don't know if the committee would hate it, like it, or not care either way. I'd like to go and see what they say about me... I've heard that people that gone before but I just don't know.

I figure either, (1) I get in and I find out without having to wait for my letter or (2) I don't get in but I get to hear what they say so I know what to change for my next attempt.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

Does anyone have any information or past experience with this? I'd actually never heard that this was open to the public before I stumbled across this post today.

weird... i just re-subscribed to this thread in anticipation of the Feb. 24 decision, and the above quote was a question i asked during last year's application cycle. i don't think i ever got a response to it.

well, obviously i didn't get in last year, but i'm much more hopeful this year. i did end up speaking to someone on the admissions committee, and they confirmed that it is actually open to the public. however, the person i talked to was not at all a fan of applicants showing up for the meeting. maybe there are some who wouldn't mind or would actually like it, but there's no way i'll take the chance this year.

that being said, i can say i've heard one story (more accurately, a rumor) that someone went to the meeting, ended up having lunch with a board member, and had a positive outcome. i highly doubt the validity and repeatability of this, however.

i went to the re-applicant workshop last year, and it was somewhat helpful. they wouldn't actually read exactly what the interviewers wrote on the file, but they gave some good general tips and spare specifics that i took away. mostly it was "keep taking classes and re-take the mcat." duh.

good luck, hope you get some good news after the 24th.

What is the difference between being deferred and waitlisted?

The way I understood it on Jan. 17 is that if you are rejected then you would know within 10 business days which I guess means that you would know already. I think the rest are either waitlisted or accepted but won't know until end of Feb. or early March. I thought that they also said that they've taken everyone almost everyone off the waitlist the last couple of years but I could be mistaken.

Here's the explanation that I've heard. Deferred is just that -- they haven't been able to make a decision yet for whatever reason, and they're not going to make a decision until that last meeting. So technically if you're deferred, they could decide to accept, waitlist or reject you. If you're on the waitlist, you know that you'll be considered for a spot if one opens up.

I guess now, though, since they're not making official decisions until late February, you guys who are still waiting are essentially in the same position as previous interviewees who are deferred. 😕

The story I've heard about the final meeting is that they don't discuss applicants by name, and from what I've heard, there's really not a lot of discussions of applicants. The year I applied, I know a few people did go, and they felt like it was a waste of time because they really didn't learn anything from it.

The way I understood it was that they would send out rejections and deferral letters within 10 business days of your interview. If you don't get anything then I think you are either waitlisted or accepted. I do specifically remember her saying that no news is good news right now.

Well, that's cool. Even though it might be a little more unnerving to check the mail hoping nothing will show up. 🙂

has anyone that's interviewed this year been rejected? from what i've heard everyone who wasn't outright accepted has been deferred..just curious😕

Two people that interviewed on the same day in November with me were outright rejected. No deferral or anything, just a rejection letter right before Christmas...

in case it is useful info to anyone, my friend i mentioned has their ou interview this upcoming thursday. so still some interviews to go. it turns out their mcat wasn't what i expected...i know the gpa is good tho and i'm sure everything else is amazing. despite the mcat, they have that interview coming up so don't lose hope if youre someone who got a lower MCAT score. if the rest of your stuff is solid, you should be aight! at least that's how it looks for my friend.

good luck to everyone interviewing today and tomorrow! :luck:

So... How did all of the interviews go???

The 2008-2009 Academic Calendar is up.

Wow, were the interviews that bad????

Azadi, I just glanced at your mdapps. You are pretty awesome!!! Have you decided which school you will be attending? I would find it pretty darn hard to pass up Hopkins! 🙂

With the big board meeting a week and a half away, I think everyone is sitting on pins and needles afraid to jinx themselves by saying too much 🙂

Dr.Bagel posted this on the class thread, so I thought I'd link it over here in case anyone missed it there. Editing to add second link. If you read it, be sure to check out the linked reading at the bottom of the page. From my understanding of the reading, it looks like selecting the OU College of Community Medicine track (ie the last two years in Tulsa) is being included in the initial application/selection process for the class starting fall of 2008. Has anyone already accepted received any information on this? Previous classes did not have to make the decision until partway into their second year. The comment about reducing loan repayment liabilities to offset the compensation disparity for those serving the underserved sounds like an interesting plan.

Well, I'm glad this thread hasn't turned into the "PreMedMommy likes to talk to herself" thread. Good luck to everyone still waiting on an answer.

i'm curious about how this might work. for the incoming class of 2008, is this the sort of thing that could affect acceptances? can acceptances be conditional on spending 3rd and 4th year in tulsa? on interview day they said that every year there are enough people who volunteer to go to tulsa that it has never needed to be mandatory for anyone, but if they are trying to meet certain enrollment goals in tulsa then it seems like they could very possibly begin making people go to tulsa.

i'm interested in both primary care and working in an underserved area, but i have no desire to move to tulsa after 2 years.

anybody have any additional info on this?

i'm not too worried about it... just curious.

you mean they can accept or reject you depending on how you feel about studying in tulsa? that doesn't seem right....

only 10 days until the big meeting.... *holds breath*

haha i saw you post 3x in a row and felt the need to speak up 🙂

up until that post i never knew about the community medicine program in tulsa. thanks for the info bravofriendly! did anyone else read the "admissions retreat 2007" info under the publications link on the admissions homepage? wondering if that's anything i should wade through while waiting for the next 10 days...

While, I am not a member of the admissions committee, I can say that I have never observed any student being pressured to go to Tulsa over Oklahoma City. I am fairly confident that your class....just like every class that has ever come before it....will have enough people that want to go to Tulsa that it will not make a difference if you want to go to OKC. Additionally, I would find it hard to believe that any preference (one way or the other) would influence your chances of being accepted at OU. As a matter of fact, I don't recall this ever being an issue during admissions for anyone in my class.

I elected to stay in Oklahoma City for third and fourth year. Now that I am at the end of the game, I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the decision to go to Tulsa vs OKC does not really mean very much with regard to your future career ambitions (residency placement, etc). I know of several people in Tulsa who matched very well (some years it seems that they do better in the match than OKC). When I interviewed for Rads at Hopkins-the resident that took the interview group to dinner was an OU-Tulsa grad. In addition, some of the third year rotations (something that very few people think about as premeds) are probably better in Tulsa. In the end, going to one campus is only a matter of preference-being close to family or whatever. You really can't go wrong either way.

Seriously, I remember having some fear about the Tulsa decision, but it was entirely unfounded. The choice is yours to make.

thanks for the info.

the 3rd and 4th year in tulsa really doesn't sound like a bad deal... especially if the rotations are better and the residency opportunities are equal or greater.

i'm willing to do what's needed, but i'd just prefer to not uproot (with spouse who would need to find a job) and go to tulsa for probably only 2 years... then probably uproot again for residency.

that being said, if the right opportunity showed itself... i'm up for whatever.

thanks to all for the quick responses and good advice. good luck to everyone waiting for the next 10 days to pass... the 24th can't come soon enough. sheesh.
