Hey everyone, I'm thinking of applying to Oklahoma State and had a question about this alternative pathway, which allows you to apply even if you haven't met all of the pre-requisite courses. Here is a description from the Oklahoma State Website:

"The Admissions Committee of the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences seeks to admit students into the DVM program who have solid academic backgrounds and possess excellent potential for distinguished performance in the veterinary profession. The Admissions Committee recognizes that well prepared students with diverse backgrounds can succeed and play an important role in advancing the veterinary medical profession. With that in mind, students who can meet the following guidelines may be admitted, even if they have not completed all of the required pre-veterinary courses:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in a Biological science area in at least 9 consecutive fall and spring semesters and have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher.

  • Taken the general GRE within the last four years; scores must rank in the top 50 percentile for each section of the GRE.

  • At least one of the 3 required references must be from a veterinarian for whom the applicant has worked or with whom the applicant has thoroughly discussed their educational and career goals.
Applicants with a doctoral degree in the biological, physical, or biological sciences may also qualify for admission and, depending on their educational record, be considered for advanced standing. Seems simple enough, except for the first bullet which states "Completion of an undergraduate degree in a Biological science area in at least 9 consecutive fall and spring semesters". This seems like it might be a typo... isn't the usual undergrad degree only 8 semesters? It seems like "at most" would make more sense... If anyone has any insight on this, I would greatly appreciate it... this would prevent me from having to take an animal nutrition class on-line. Thanks in advance.

Hey. I'm a second year at Oklahoma State. I did not know they had this pathway. I think it may be new. I would check with Robin or Dr. Meinkoth in the admissions office with any questions/concerns. They are super nice ladies and are always willing to help. Orientation is going on right now so they are super busy but they would probably take the time to answer questions, especially through email.

Litterboxer,

I don't have an answer for you, but when you find out, please share with everyone else!

I didn't know about this option, though it could (based on the answer you hear back) apply to me, so I'm glad you posted this. I'd heard good things about OkState on here so was a little bummed I don't have a few classes necessary.

Thanks, I did call Robin and she was very helpful. Yes, there is such thing as the alternative pathway (if you completed your undergrad degree (must be in the biology area) in 8 semesters or less with a cum GPA > 3.4, scored above the 50th percentile on every section of the GRE (including the writing) and have at least 1 recommendation from a vet.) you don't have to have all of the pre-reqs... but it still doesn't preclude you from taking an animal nutrition course, which is exactly what I was hoping. Looks like I have to look for one on-line. They do offer an affordable self-paced one at oklahoma you can start anytime. Go to is.okstate.edu to look up more info about it.
By the way, how do you like Oklahoma?

I love it here. It is a smaller class size which I like. We have some really great professors and clinicians as well as support staff. I grew up in Oklahoma so I am used to the weather but I know some out of staters took awhile to get acclimated (it goes from really hot to 30 below to 70s in a matter of a couple weeks). If you ever want to come out for a tour, I would be happy to show you around! Feel free to PM me with any questions you have about the school. Class starts Monday but I will be checking in every so often.
