That literally sounds like a win-win situation. Add in "good with dogs" and that's pretty much all of my criteria...

Haha he was nervous around dogs initially because he didn’t grow up with them like I did, but now he actually stops to say hi to and pet dogs he meets, even if I’m not around. some men are actually amenable to change! Works well because I’m rigid, stubborn, and uncompromising lol.

@OrthoTraumaMD is it considered a faux pas to present an abstract at more than one conference assign the conferences are different enough? What are your thoughts on 'double dipping'?

Some conferences will actually prohibit you from doing this. They will ask you, when you do your paperwork, if the work has been presented in whole or in part at another conference. If they don't, then all bets are off and you can present. I've presented some of my research projects at three different major conferences in the same year, and it was fine.

As a medical student does it matter what type of research I do as long as it’s ortho specific (and not just a case report)? The vast majority of research projects it seems like are retrospective chart reviews

Does not matter. If you’re going for a very strong academic residency, having first authorship in a high-impact journal is good. But the type of project is less important than your ability to talk about it coherently.

Wow. 100,000 views! I’m amazed...didn’t think it would end up so popular when I started this thread a year ago. Thanks guys. 🙂

I think your enthusiasm, sunny disposition, and love for your job shine through. So many of us in medicine hate our jobs and it's nice to read posts from someone so content, happy, and fulfilled.

This thread is seriously amazing for many of reasons. I still think a layout of all your Questions and Answers (/responses) should be consolidated somewhere on the thread haha

Also the above x100. This really is very true and we are also enlightened by your enthusiasm and genuineness.

Is research in the field required for ortho? Ill have radiology experience and ortho is on my list of interests and I would probably end up taking a research year if I decide later on if its the field I want to commit to.

Absolutely required, yes. Ortho is very competitive and the average applicant has 6-7 pubs/abstracts/presentations, most in ortho.

Thank you. The questions have allowed me to become a better mentor in my own professional life, as it helps me understand what students and residents are thinking about and worried about. So I benefit from this, too. As for the Questions and Answers consolidation, I'm not sure how I would go about doing something like that...

And im assuming that would take the entirety of the research year, correct? Im in my gap year now and my friend said my abstracts and presentations now count towards residency apps. Does it matter if the pubs are in high impact journals/large national conference presentations? Or is it more important to just show that you are interested in research and try to be as productive as possible?

The latter. It's nice to have a high impact journal but any journal is good. As I said in previous posts, your enthusiasm and ability to talk coherently about your project is more important. And yes, it would take the entirety of the research year.

I doubt you would have time for something like that! I was thinking a student or someone interested in looking back through might be able to consolidate it all. (I would do this if I wasn't so busy, but maybe in the future I could)

Haha well I don't even know how to do it! I would if I knew how... trauma is so varied in terms of how busy we are... some days I can't breathe, other days it's like this, when I'm done with cases and just hang out in my office blasting music and working on research, and just have this site in the background so I have time to answer.

I was going to compile all of the questions, but there are 855 posts in this thread! I was busy at work at the time but I have a few days off so I will work on it. Does someone want to help?

Would recommend adding this to your CV under "community outreach"
....

But seriously, this is super helpful, thank you. For someone like me who is interested in ortho this is so valuable. I've shadowed surgeons and chatted with them in the OR and the office, but nobody has time to sit there and play 20 questions about getting into residency and going through training. So having something like this, where you are able to answer questions at your leisure and everyone can view the responses as a whole, is 😍

Thank you for the compliment, but that’s quite a turnaround statement. In another thread, you made all kinds of assumptions about me, and called me “lame,” “not brave,” and “disgusting” for apparently not being empathic enough about life being unfair.

Ironically, my recent knee surgery still has my sleep patterns in shambles so I'm working on random things in the middle of the night. Give me a couple hours and I'll be done with a compiled list of questions and answers from the thread.

Okay, I think this should work. Due to volume of questions and answers, they have been divided as follows:

1) Medical Students Interested in Ortho- research, mentors, ECs, away rotations
2) Ortho Match Specifics- selecting programs, ranking programs, PD input
3) Ortho Residency- hours, resources, structure
4) Ortho Practice/Choosing Ortho- general ortho practice info, why to choose ortho, ancillary ortho info
5) Trauma Specifics- specifics about trauma ortho
6) Ortho Plus/Versus Other Specialties- podiatry, neuro, gensurg, IR, etc
7) Lifestyle- hours, job type opportunities, schedules, compensation

It's not perfect, but it should be at least approximately sorted. Someone with more time and patience is welcome to refine.
Will upload in 2 parts.

For research experiences in ERAS, do people list their research year as a single research experience or do they list each research project they worked on as a research experience? I'm just wondering what you usually see in ortho applications and how you prefer applicants to use the research experiences section. Thanks in advance!!

I don’t think it matters, but I usually see the research projects listed separately.

Wow. Thank you for doing this! I will look when on computer, can’t see it on phone.

Hopefully it helps people navigate through if they're looking to read on certain topics. Like I said, things aren't perfectly split up, but should be fairly accurate.

Just some thoughts...
I recently had a student seek me out for mentorship for the first time, and they (I say they on purpose for anonymity) did something few students had: they came prepared. I get so many people who want a “mentor” without understanding what that means. They just have a vague sense of “tell me everything about everything.” That’s not as helpful. This student had not only specific questions about residency and research, but went the extra step with suggestions about how specifically I could help them. They had an idea of what I had done from my (publicly available) CV, and suggested a project idea. I scrapped the idea because it had already been done, but I was impressed with their forward thinking and decided to include them on a different project. Also, they showed up ten minutes early to the coffee place, which I appreciated as I am also an early arrival. Just some tips for you guys...take the extra step. Look at the things your attendings have already done. Look them up on pubmed, it takes 2 seconds but makes all the difference in having you stand out in their mind.

I have enjoyed your insights and banter. Had a research question, my school has none really and I would like to pursue some. I have reached out to various programs to help, no avail. What would you suggest as I pursue a competitive residency? Almost done with m1. Thank you.

That’s a tough one. I need more information. Is this in ortho research or something else? If your hospital has a medical school then I assume they have an ortho program. Any ortho program must do research in order to stay accredited. So when you say the school has no research what exactly do you mean?

Thank you. DO school with no associated hospital. I am looking for research into anything clinically competitive ( ophthal, surg, ent, or any other procedure heavy area). I have reached out to the ortho, ophthal, plastics residencies, nothing yet.

Tough. Did you reach out to nearby hospitals? What part of the country are you in? You said you are an M1, are there older students who have done research? Maybe they can hook you up with their mentors, and you can continue their projects once they graduate. Or start some of your own. Competitive fields won’t just take someone who cold-calls if they haven’t rotated and they don’t have any connection...

Yes, I did reach out to the universities around me. I am in the Midwest (big city). I have talked to upper class men in ENT and they told me to keep reaching out to programs. Hmmm, I am trying to meet more residents and doctors. Many doors have been closed, but I will keep trying. I was just curious if you know of something else that I am not thinking of or any other suggestions. Thank you.

As another 1st year DO student if i could make a suggestions (and @OrthoTraumaMD please feel free to critique this suggestion), itd be to reach out to near by universities (as you said youre in a big city there should be plenty) and if you cant get a hold of clinical research done by an ortho surgeon try reaching out to biomechanics researchers (check to make sure theyre doing ortho relevant research first and publishing obviously). Some of our biomechanists publish in sports med and ortho journals, so its definitely an avenue you can look into if it interests you.

Yes, I think this would be helpful.

@ekmf27050
That's awesome!! That's exactly what I was think about. Glad someone was able to do it.
@OrthoTraumaMD I think it would be helpful, if somehow possible, to sticky these. Are there moderators that can do this for the thread? I'n not too familiar how it works but wouldn't want to lose those amidst more questions.

@Winged Scapula
Can you help? Is this possible? To sticky something within a thread? Specifically the word documents posted on 3/31?

Thanks! It was a little overwhelming until I divided it up-- about 73 pages filled with walls of text. More docs can be more annoying, but my hope is that it's easier to navigate that way.

Also, in training for the competitive field that is orthopedics, I slipped in some sabotage advice a few pages deep in some of the documents. Things like "Throw ice chips at your resident every 3 weeks to keep them on their toes" and "Breathe heavily at your attending in the OR to establish dominance"

*No, I didn't really do that

**Or did I?

I’m going to try the “breathe heavily” tactic next time with my residents. I’m sure it will go over well

Not within the thread.

However if someone wants to create a new thread with the document in it I can sticky that or if someone wants to send me the document as an email attachment I can create my own thread and sticky if you guys would find it helpful.

What would also work is that I could probably strip it out from the current post and place it into the very first post on this thread which would make it easier to find and keep everything in one place. However we try to cut down on the number of stickies so if I give this thread a sticky I have to give them for all of the AMA threads to be fair. Let me know what you guys think is best.

I can email the originals or put them somewhere else, whatever is easiest and makes the most sense
