OSU-COM Class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UnderGrad

They didn't say when the white coat is, but I would assume that it is sometime during orientation week (Aug 12). I've been told by an OSUCOM alum that they tend to wait until the last minute to tell us details.

Are you already in Tulsa?

In the past the White Coat ceremony has been on the Saturday following the orientation week. It is held in Founder's Hall, and family/friends are welcome.

A few tips -
1) The composite picture for my class (2004) was taken at lunch on the first day of orientation. Dress in the manner in which you want to be remembered for the next four years.

2) Don't buy any books or medical equipment now. Wait until you are contacted by your mentor - they will likely have books, dissection equipment, etc for you.

3) Don't waste any time studying for BLS. You will be taught everything you need to know in the morning review session.

That is all I can think of now regarding orientation week. Congratulations to all of you.

Pilot Thanks a lot for all the information.

UnderGrad I will be moving to WestPort in the middle of July. Are you in Tulsa now? How do you like the Apartments? I have seen the outside but not the inside.

SEE ALL OF YOU GUYS IN AUGUST.

I love all this info. I'm eating it up. So here are a few more questions:

When are we contacted by our mentor?

What do you mean "Don't waste any time studying for BLS." What does BLS stand for?

Thanks Pilot and DrMom.

I think BLS stands for basic life saving, which i would guess is our CPR or first aid certification class? What else goes on during orientation week, does anyone know?

If anyone is interested in living near the school in a house instead of an apartment, PM or email me. I know a family that has a rental house 2 blocks from the school. They generally rent it to OSU-COM students (their current occupant just graduated).

The house has 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bath, 2 living areas, large backyard, security system. $695/mo.

I have more info if you are interested.

Hello everyone! School is finally out and I am now "summering". I am also excited and eager to begin. I know this sounds weird, but I guess I'm looking forward to buying scrubs, tools, and filing out forms. Yuck! Yeah!

I also kept thinking, 'they forgot us.' I will also confirm that Fin.Aid says they will contact us in June. They keep reminding me that 'they will take care of us.' I am so excited I may need Depends during Orientation. JK. :) :D

Hey everyone,
I was still wondering when we were going to try to have a pre-2006 party. We can meet in OKC or Tulsa, but I think it would be cool to get to know some of you before we start. Someone should set a time and date and then reply if you can make it or not.

OK I will give it the 1st shot- OKC-Sat june 15th in Bricktown.

Dr. Mom and Maxy and whoever else,

I will be moving into Westport in the middle of July. For right now, my move in date is scheduled for July 19th. I vote we do the party sometime in July, but I'm sure that's somewhat selfish. . . I'm trying to plan a wedding right now for June 22!

My future hubby will be staying here, and I will be living in Tulsa by myself. :( I know it will be hard on us.

I hope to make friends with all of you! I love this board because we've already had a chance to interact some!

Hopefully, we'll all get our mentor letter soon. It might take longer to get out here to the Okie panhandle area. . . you know, coming by horse and all. :p

Later.

By the way, I have not seen the inside of Westport either. I decided to get the large one bedroom. I've heard only good things about the place though.

hmmmm westport is ok, but i personally would recommend renting elsewhere. The apartment complex itself is fine, but I know of several car thefts that have occured there (including a first year I know from my undergrad). There have also been a few break ins and such-- make sure you ask the management about the safety of the place before you rent. They may have put in some more safety measures by now, but I would still be weary of the place. My first semester I stayed at Sundance, (just down Riverside at 31st) and I didn't have any problems at all. I would encourage you guys to at least drive down riverside and check out the places available, as some of them are really nice, and not far away.

Yea, I think I agree with DR. MOM and Undergrad. I'm currently in Houston, TX and I will be moving to the WestPort on July 26th. Furthermore, I think others will be moving in somewhere in July. Hence I think the party should be somewhere towards the end of July.
However, Bricktown in OKC will be a great place.

Yea, I kind of know about the theft problem at WestPort, and I plan on doing the best I can to stay safe. It can't be worse than my neighborhood
in Houston.

For those of us staying at the westPort, we should make sure we have some anti-theft equipments on our cars, eg alarms, Clubs etc.
I know I'm definately bringing my club from Houston.
See Ya in July.

Thanks Homonculus for your advice. I wished I had known about the other apartment earlier. I chose WestPort because of it's close proximity to the school. I didn't know there was any apartment that close to the school. Maybe next time.
Homonculus, can you give us some insight on how the first day of orientation goes. Maybe it will help me calm my nerves. This is like starting High school, new faces from all sort of backgrounds.

UnderGrad ,
CONGRATULATIONS on your upcoming wedding. I wish you all the Best.
Have you decided on where you and your Hubby-to-be will be going for the honeymoon?
Take care and We will see you in Tulsa.
P.s Don't forget to bring some wedding pictures with you.

First day of orientation. . . Things may have changed, but our orientation wasn't too bad at all. The first day they'll give everyone nametags to wear and take your composite photo. Sometime during the first or second day you will meet all of your professors, and there will likely be a Q&A session with some of the second (and maybe 3rd and 4th) years. Financial aid makes a presentation, the Dean speaks to you, pretty much just "getting to know the school" kinda stuff. All of the school clubs will have booths set up part of one day (join them all, you get free lunches during the semester). You will also be given a Basic Life Support (aka CPR) course, which is EASY-- don't study for it, you will all do fine. The White Coat ceremony will be that Saturday, in the gigantic hall with the catwalk. That's really all I remember at this point-- I would have remembered more, but studying for boards has pushed a lot of the older files outta the hard drive, if ya know what i mean. :)

Hey all,
Yea I think late july would probably be better!! Whatever is fine with me, just let me know and I will be there.
Luke

Dr. Mx What part of Houston do you live in? My brother is in law school there, so I may come down there and visit. If I do we should have lunch.

Luke,
I live in the Southwest area around Sugarland and Missouri city. I have just been here for 8 months (since graduation), working with this chemical engineering company in Pasadena.
The Lunch idea sounds great. By the way which school is your brother attending?

Homonculus ,
Thanks for the information.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR BOARDS, and also tell YVONNE (from Ghana) and J.GORE I said GOOD LUCK.

Homonculus ,
Yea., tell them Maxwell said GOOD LUCK.

Dr. MX
my brother just finished his first year at Texas Southern, but I think he is going to transfer TU school of law in the fall. Anyway, I will let you know if I am able to make a trip to visit him.
Luke

Dr. Maxy,

Our honeymoon is going to be in Venice, Italy. I'm excited! I think that will be a nice break before med school begins.

UnderGrad ,
WOW thats one of the greatest places in the world for honeymoon.
Have fun, and if you get the chance, please bring me a shot glass that says Vernice or Italy on it. I collect shot glasses.
Thanks...HAVE FUN.

Hey, everyone. I got to talk to my 2nd year mentor last night and she had a lot of good info for me. SO....here's what I thought. As we get to talk with our mentors, I suggest that we share some of their advice with the others so that we can benefit from a variety of opinions.

Since my mentor was so great in getting ahold of me so quickly, I'll go ahead and share a few tidbits. She recommends that we relax and spend time with loved ones this summer as much as possible (of course, many others on this forum have said the same). If you do want to review/study up on something this summer, she suggests histology (BTW, she mentioned that the 1st histo exam caught many in her class off-guard--and that test is worth more than the others so it really hurt their grades!). She says the anatomy prof, Dr Taylor, is tough but fair, and we should befriend Don the anatomy lab tech...he knows a lot and is very helpful.

Hope you hear from your mentors soon!

Hi all!

Just got accepted to OSU from the waiting list a few days ago!

Just wanted to drop a note saying hello to everyone who will be there with me in August.

Undergrad,
   Congratulations on the upcoming wedding! Italy sounds beautiful.

Humonculus,
Thank you for the info.

I got my mentor's name in the mail this week. I am looking forward to hearing from her.

Is anyone signing up with Physicians Manpower? How many of you are sure of what you want to specialize in?

Fenrezz,
Once agian CONGRATULATIONS..

Eveshands, I have also recieved information about my mentor, I can't wait to hear from him either.
Well, as to what speciality, I will be 100% sure after my 3rd year, but now, I'm interested in anything surgical.

Thank you everyone for all the info. I too have received a letter regarding my second year mentor. What I'm most anxious about is financial aid. If anyone here hears anything will you please post it?

Thanks!

I got my financial aid packet today. Since I am already in Tulsa, I think that everything gets to me a day or so sooner. There's also quite a bit of info about other lenders and health insurance. An application for SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Association) is also in there.

I had a question about my aid, but Dana is not available until Monday (FYI).

Oh yea, I have also been waiting anxiously for those financial aid packages.

Dr. Mom....
Thanks for the information. My spirits have really lifted now. I received my second year mentor letter about 2 days after you did, so it should be here any day now.

It's also good to hear I'm not the only one anxious about financial aid.

Thanks everyone. This board has been so helpful.

Fenrezz,

Yea! You made it! You're the 4th person from our interview group that I know of!

Congrats!

Have you looked into housing?

Did anyone else get the email yet regarding the white coat ceremony? I found it in my junk mail, so all of you might want to look through your junk mail. But anyways, it just says that it is on sat. the 17th in the morning. they are wanting womens dress sizes and mens jacket sizes by june 21st for white coat sizes and also peoples name changes for lettering on their coats. i'm still waiting for my fin. aid package stuff...

Hey Undergrad,

Thanks! I was a bit pessimistic about my chances but when I saw the FedEx man walking to my apartment I knew all was well with the universe :)

Who is the 4th person? I know you and Toby got in but I hadn't heard about anyone else. Guess March 29th was a good day to interview. If you remember, could you tell me where they sat at the table? I remember the seating positions better than I do names.

I haven't looked into housing yet. I was considering just getting one of those apartments next to the school, but I don't know the name of the complex. Most likely I'm going to take the place without looking at it as it will be a bit expensive to travel to Tulsa just for that. Do you or anyone on the list have any recommendations?

Anyway, I can't wait to meet everyone in August. It's gonna be nice having at least 3 people there that I've already met in person. :)

Fenrezz,

Yes, a friend of mine who interviewed on the 29th of March has also been accepted. He's from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. Remember Jacob?. I think Undergrad remembers him. He's a very cool guy.

Fenrezz,
Westport are the apts. next to the school, and they are pretty nice. There # is 918-599-7180 and the lady I talked to was Brigitte. I think I am going to live there, but I am still deciding if I should get a roomate or go solo. Anyway, I hope that helps.
Luke

Thanks people! I'll end up calling Westport by the end of the week and hopefully I can grab an apartment. I'll see what it looks like when I move in. :D

Dr. Maxy, I checked the list of people I interviewed with on March 29th and I didn't see his name. Other than Toby and I, the only other guy there was someone named Michael. Are you sure it was the 29th that he interviewed? OSU was interviewing on the 28th as well. Could it have been then?

Fenrezz,
It might have been 28th. Well I'm also staying at the WestPort. I have already seen the outside of the complex. But I guess I will see how the inside looks like when I move in.

Fenrezz and Dr. MX,
The guy Michael on the 29th is my roomate. He is on the waitlist, I hope he gets a seat.
Luke

I hope he gets in too. Keep us posted. :)

Did he apply to any other schools?

Hi EVERYONE,
I have recieved my financial aid package. I was wandering if the calculated living expenses happens to be the same for everyone despite marital status?
Mine was calculated at about $13,000. I don't know whether that's for single or married student.
Or maybe it's all calculated the same and then adjustments are made later.
Anyone have an idea?

Anyways if not, I will just have to wait till monday to call Mrs Livingston.

Dr. Maxy,

I also received my financial aid package and my living expenses were also calculated to be $13,000. I'm a married student with children. I don't know how the adjustment thing works..... I'm hoping for one.

I'll be calling Dana on Monday too. She'll be a busy woman!

MoJo-JoJo,
Okay, I think that's the calculated living expenses for everyone. Hopefully the adjustments recalculates the living expenses or make up for additional needed expense.
Yea, Mrs Livingston is going to be geting a lot of calls coming monday.
Thanks

I have a question. Will I be getting some kind of orientation packet in the mail? I received the financial aid stuff, but as far as information about when orientation is and any details I need to know, I'm in the dark.

Did anyone get that info in the mail?

The award letter is generic. In order to change the amount you will need to submit a school-year budget and letter requesting additional money to Dana, and she will recalculate the amount. The maximum amount you can get per year is around $40,000 (if you are married with kids). The maximum overall (including undergrad) is around $190,000. I recommend you shop around for interest rates - when I signed my four year promissary note the T.H.E. Loan was the best, but I don't know it that is true anymore.

I lived in Tulsa for 13 years and I would suggest that those looking for apartments check the Tulsa World (newspaper) online for apartments or garage apartments. Westport on the River is slightly expensive, and other apartments on the east side of the river are usually less expensive.

I hope this helps. There is a walking/biking trail that crosses the river for those who have no car. :D :D

I talked w/ Dana several months ago, and she told me that the "generic award letter" goes to everyone regardless of married or not. To change that you need to see her. She also said that being married you would qualify for $38500 MSI and MSII, and $45K MSIII and MSIV.

I checked into some apartments near St. Francis (about 10 miles from the school) and they were in the 350 range for a 1BR.

Hope this helps - Look forward to meeting everyone!

Some of the apartments near the school, on the east side of the river (not a bad place in Tulsa), are Place One Apartments, Sunchase, Lincoln Plaza (high$), University Towers (looks like a large syringe in the skyline). The school is located at about west 23rd and Southwest Boulevard. Check out places between downtown and 41st street, and near Peoria Lewis or Riverside.

Westport is close, and the apartments were nice the last time I checked. If your budget is tight and you don't mind driving about 15 minutes to get to school, look around.

I live 45 minutes north of Tulsa and will be commuting and crashing at friends' when I am too tired to drive home.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone this summer.

Anyone know of someone looking for a roomate at westport or anywhere else in Tulsa. I was going to live by myself, but I think with my student budget it would be better to get a roomate.
24/M/christian/have new furniture
thanks,
Luke
