OSU-COM class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't get a PDA yet. The school is trying to get a grant for all of the med students to get PDAs. You don't need one during 1st year at all & they're expecting to have word on this grant next November.

As to a laptop, most here don't bring one to school, but I do. Right now I have a Toshiba Satellite. I haven't had any problems with it.

Kwooder,

I was just starting the think the same thing... I am not the PDA type, so I am going to hold off as long as possible....

as for the laptop.... I am going to try to get one thru business for really cheap... want me to let you know what I find.... I mean cheap like 300-450, poss refurb? pay up front, but would be dell, hp, or the like....?

that offer goes for anyone... if available

later

Dude, I'm getting a Dell!

My family has always been exclusively Dell, and my dad works in government IT and gets significant discounts. I'm getting a new laptop for my birthday in May just in time for school.

Any suggestions for software, accessories, or hardware I might need for school?

Don't get me wrong...I love my PDA & use it often as a second year. I just don't want you guys to go out and buy something when you may very well be getting one for free. Also, only a couple of models will be compatible with the school's system, so you don't want to get the "wrong" kind.

Yeah, let me know what you find. I think I want to to get a mac though. I've worked pretty extensively on a Sony Viao for 2 years and I've had problems with it from the get go.

Any current students know of any mac issues at OSUCOM?

I worked in an office with pcs and macs and have never seen the mac leave you hanging (the pc of course is another story).

One of my classmates brings his mac laptop to class occasionally. I've never heard him mention any problems...and he does hook into the inter/intranet here.

I got my Compaq Presario 2100 a couple of years for grad school, it was a life saver, I don't know about how many papers you have to write, but it sure helped then.

As for a PDA, I see all the residence and interns here at the hospital running around with them, but I think I will wait until second year.

I have always wanted to try a Mac, but never had the money or the guts to switch...

You rarely have any written assignments. I use my laptop to take notes in class, make study sheets, browse the internet, etc. I also have a bunch of music on it to listen to while studying. 🙂

Actually, DrMom uses her laptop to play around on SDN forums all day during every class......

(I've actually observed this on a few occasions)

I had to tracheally suction a patient last night that was Fleming.

a few occasions? 😉 I have a reputation here for taking good notes...really. I'm just really good at multitasking. 😀

Hey, what's going on? I finally made it over to the website. I got to meet some of you at ASD. I see you are trying to get a dinner together some night. Would be nice to get to know a few more people. I live on OKC but am in Tulsa about every other weekend looking for a house. I'll keep an eye on the site to see what date you decide on. Also, Bourbon Street is a pretty good place to eat in Tulsa.

Hey LabTech, I'm in the same boat with houses. I'm in Norman. Where in Tulsa are you looking? It's been frustrating for us so far. Everything close (and decent) is small and expensive.

Nice to hear from you. Welcome.

I am looking around in the midtown area. Pretty much anything west of Yale. I am having the same problems finding one I like. I have seen a couple that I really liked, but they were not on the market over a week. I think a lot of houses tend to go up for sale around March, so hopefully we will have some more options soon.

Hey guys,

Lots of houses for rent and sale down here in Broken Arrow. I think there are about 4 or 5 of us in a two mile radius. I think I am going to try some car pool thing and see how it goes.... Shoot, my Excursions as big as a bus.......lol

Our 2 bed 1 bath house will be on the market soon. we live right off of riverside and need more space.

so are you going to try to buy or rent?

I'm moving into a 1 bedroom apartment the last weekend of July over on 71st near ORU. I've always lived in a furnished apartment, and currently own no furniture. I'm going to have to come up with some soon before I move up there, so does anyone have any suggestions on where i can get some cheap second hand furniture? Thanks

Ah, Roofing. One of life's simple pleasures. The smell of thatch in the morning. I need to put some guttering up before I sell my house.

I got really intimate with the bundles of shingles at Lowe's when I worked there. It's fun loading those spineless creatures.

Yeah, I am trying to get all the work done to the house before school starts..... It really wasn't too bad, but then agian, I am use to laying Spanish tile roofs, carrying cement all the way across the place, laying 16lb tiles. So the shingles were not to bad....Plus the weather was perfect....

Ahh, just think, never agian will I have to lay another roof, the simple pleasures of becoming a doctor.....lol

just thinking.... would it not be awful to be a physician and the market in health care get so bad that you had to start working your first job again?

DrDad

OK thats scary, stop cussing me.......

I have spent all this time trying to getout of xray////lol

yeah i know.... that is why it is particularly sooo scary

Hello all, question,

What have you done for chicken pox vaccine? I have all my other titers, but do we have to get the cp vaccine or just state when we had chicken pox? Sounds stupid, but this is all I lack to turn in this piece of the puzzle....

call the clinic on SW Blvd & talk to Cindy 918-561-8376. Tell her you're a new student next year. She should be able to find out the answer for you or direct you to someone who can.

I have been trying to get ahold of Cindy Joyce for almost 2 weeks now. I finally got a message last night, she said," That I need to get a chicken pox titer (var) from my personal physician." Its OK, I have plenty of money,,,lol.

Hmm. I guess you've either got to get a titer or a vaccination. You may just want to see which one is cheaper. 🙂

my old records are hilarious....
they are worse than Dr. writing... they are a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy of my immunization record written on an old peice of paper by my physician... at the time...

funny huh

DrDad

No, no no.....

You don't have to get a chicken pox titer or vaccination, as long as you know the approximate date you had the chicken pox. Then all you do, is make sure the physician or nurse at the location you are getting your shot records from makes a notation of this.

I sent in all my vaccines and physical stuff in late December, and they accepted it, with just a month and year written in.

Anyone know if OSU is going to offer a DO/MPH program by next year?

What would be the benefit for getting additional degrees, such as MPH, MS, MBA, etc? For example, what positions would you be qualified for with these degrees that you could otherwise not be?

All depends on what you want to do

MBA: can run a clinic/hospital, some docs get one just to have some business knowledge

MPH: interest in public health (health of populations, rather than individuals), epidemiology, preventive medicine, occupational medicine, administration/policy (which is what the combined OSU-OUHSC program will be, I believe)

If a masters or PhD fit into what you want to do, then great, if not I don't see a reason to spend more time in school. 😀

(Keep in mind, I started med school with an MPH & an extra healthcare quality certification 😉)

i like jeeps that's all. and i haven't taken the time to learn how to change the picture to something real cool. as far as the name no reason there. -456

OSUdoc08, can you elaborate more on your housing deal?
I am hoping to go to Tulsa to look around in the next couple of weeks and I am trying to get prepared. thanks.

I know that OSUdoc08 can give you info, but I recommend that you also talk to Dana. 😀

Contact the Tulsa Housing Authority for a list of approved apartments. These apartments will allow reduced rates depending on your financial status. Dana didn't know about the apartment I'm staying at, and I had to tell her about it, so I would go directly to the THA. Their website is www.tulsahousing.org .

You can't deal with them until you have your financial aid package back to prove that you are fully relying on government aid (i.e. loans to cover all expenses.)
