Does your advise hold true for anatomy as well if one has never had it?
 
Especially for anatomy, actually. The time spent the summer before really doesn't pay off. No matter what, you're gonna be spending way too many hours on anatomy next semester, so don't add to it this summer.

The thing is, med school isn't really like undergrad or grad school. The volume is incredible, and it is likely that you'd spend a bunch of time over the summer and come to find that you only reviewed the first week or so of a class. You guys will be working hard, but will be able to do fine once school starts...even if you haven't had the classes before.

most people borrow more money than you can fathom. There are grants (military, rural, etc) and scholarships out there, so I recommend that you make an appointment with Dana.

Stafford & Perkins loan (that's me)

I won't do grants because the options for my specialty are limited, and I don't want to commit to working somewhere for several years that I don't plan to live (i.e. foreign country, middle of nowhere, etc.)
 
Hey!! Welcome all new additions to the forum. Sorry, I haven't been on for a while. Brent and Kat - I think I interviewed wtih you guys the Friday before Thanksgiving.

I am very happy to hear more people suggest not studying before summer. I work with some graduates from OSU-COM and they all have told me the same thing. I guess I am lucky in that I have taken biochem, anatomy, micro....etc, but I still feel like I have forgotten most of what I learned in undergrad.

As far as paying for school...So far, just taking out loans. Although, I am waiting to hear back on some scholarships I applied for. I interviewed with the National Health Corps in May, but won't know anything till August at the earliest.

Hey Everyone!

My name is Shannon...I was at the Admitted Student Day in June.

To explain the screen name: About 6 days after the ASD, I had surgery on both feet ( 👎 ) and haven't been getting around much since.

A little info about me: I'm a female, 25, from Chicago, moving to Tulsa in 3 weeks and cannot wait! Graduated from U of Wisconsin a few years back with a degree in poetry writing.

I am really excited about starting at OSU, and getting know all of you. The people that I met at ASD were great, so I have high hopes for the year(s) ahead.

Did anyone interview on Thursday the week before Thanksgiving? I've recognized people at ASD, but don't know if they're on SDN yet.

Also, does anyone have any idea what speciality they want to do?
I know everyone says that it'll change, but I'm still kinda curious...

For myself, I'm interested in Uro-Gynecology...which is kind of a mixture between GYN and Uro...as if that wasn't obvious...🙂

I shadowed my uncle for a month the summer between my sophomore and junior years of undergrad in his Urologic Surgery practice. So right now, that is what I am leaning towards. How knows what the next four years will bring though, right?

😉 Do not worry about biochem, it is far easier than either of my undergraduate biochem courses (so easy in fact it bore a close resemblance to my college religion course...... you will understand what I mean when you meet Dr. Banschbach "the preacher"). On the other hand, even though I do not suggest studying over the summer since it will do no good, I will tell you that having a firm grasp on whats going on in the world of molecular biology would (and did make mine) your life much, much, much less stressfull.

AND NOW FOR MY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ALL WHO HAVE DECIDED TO ENTER THE WORLD OF MEDICINE.

Congratulations, and Im sorry. It turns out that you have chosen the worst possible time to enter this profession since men with painted faces beat dogs in the rain so that their cows could get pregnant. I am proud of all of you that you care enough about people to go through with this. Few people, if any know exactly what to expect coming into their first year (God knows I did'nt). Many people will over-positive/pump up "everything is going to be all right" you to death. Ill shoot you straight. There are basically five types of first year students. 1. Those who have excelled throughout most of thier conscious lives and will do such in medical school wheather by pure genius or very hard work., 2. Those who slacked off most of their lives and suddenly realized thier intellectual gifts by either a huge humanitarian epiphany or the threat of huge unpayable debt that comes with failure., 3. Those who have always done well and thought themselves the brightest who suddenly find themselves at the bottom of the heap or out of the pile all together., 4. Those who coasted through life, tried to coast through medical school, rolled the dice one to many times on tests and lost., 5. Those most commonly seen individuals with positive outlooks who do average to very well on just about everything, are easy to get along with, and put thier focus on being "caught up in all their classes, rather than peeing on the fire closest to them and smashing eash test into tiny bits." All in all kids OSU-COM is by far one of the friendliest medical schools in the universe where virtually everyone is happy to see you succeed..... but be aware, every student as the year goes on will begin to ask themselves the same question when they think of you "Would I let trust this individual to take care of me or my family down the line, do they care, do they work hard, do they have the problem solving skills?" Not to scare you all and not to imply that you know anything about practicing medicine in your first two years, I simply want to remind you all that even though its all smiles, when it comes down to it your bread and butter your first two years is learning the material as best you can. After all, it would be hard to play a never before seen Mozart piece on the piano if you could not read sheet music, no matter how talented you were.

I'm doing Emergency Medicine, and possibly EMS Medical Direction or EM Sports Medicine as an addition to working in the ED.

The feet are ok, got my stiches out yesterday. The nurse told me that since I was going to medical school, she'd do the first one and i'd watch, then I'd do the second one. :scared:

As for a specialty: I have no clue, but I have ruled out a few:

Peds (sick little kids would be too much for me, and nervous, freaked out parents, well they'd probably be too much for me too),

Geriatrics (b/c well I'm not sure how to explain it, I used to work in a nursing home and it seemed so hopeless, although out of all the work I did there, I liked the Alzheimer's unit the best)

Some of the specialties I'm kind of interested in right now are orthopedic surgery, developmetal neurology, neurology in general, and maybe plastic surgery, but we'll see how much that changes in the coming years. Also endocrinology.

What I was sure I wanted to do, before I actually applied, was Women's Health. And I don't really even know if that exists. I'm not just talking about Gyne, because there is so much that attacks women differently than men. Maintaining a woman's health takes a somewhat different approach than maintinaing that of a man. (Is it clear that my undergrad minor was women's studies? Don't worry, even though I am a proud feminist, I'm not a man-hater guys!)

My name is Aimee, 25, ORU and TU graduate, married with 3 step-children. I have always wanted to practice medicine and am excited to start OSU-COM in the fall.

I went to the June admitted student day. To all those who went to Mexicalli and Magoo's afterwards, please let me know if you all get together again. It was a blast.
 
I agree. Let's get together before school starts, at least.
 
I don't think we have an AMSA chapter at our school. You need to find out how to go about that, but I do know to start a new club you have to wait a year to get approval by the senate. Probably won't happen until fall 2005.
 
Why do you want to scare all of the new students? The only things you guys need to know is where happy hour is on Friday.

This post reeks of wisdom.

I also disagree with bck's perspective on the 1st two years. I suggest working hard. But do not sacrifice friends, family, exercise, sleep, relaxation, Seinfeld. There are only a few exceptions to the above. (mostly finals)

Grades in the 1st two years are worthless for residency selection. And no amount of preparation can prepare you for the poorly-written nightmare that is COMLEX.

So just relax, study as much or little as you need to reach your goals, and let the chips fall where they may.

Hopefully I'll see some of you at Kilkenny's. I'm usually the one sitting at the second-to-last barstool on the left.

My problem is the fact that you are making light of how hard medical school really is. You will not have time to go to the bars and while you will have a little time for your family and friends, you will have to sacrifice your whole life. That is just the way it is!
 
By the way deano..... The good majority of the time people who belive that grades have nothing to do with residency choice obviously have not heard of dermatology.

While I agree that sacrifices are made, the magnitude will vary from student to student. The belief that everything must be sacrificed in order to be a great physician is not true.

My intent was not to portray medical school as easy. I got my a$$ kicked on a regular basis. However, by organizing my priorities, I also found plenty of time to enjoy life while being successful academically.

Is that why surveys filled out by program directors in several specialties all listed preclinical grades as the least important factor in residency selection?

While AOA (which does not exist in the DO world) may play a role in residency selection, it is common knowledge that many other factors carry more significance. Examples include boards scores, LORs, outside rotations, clinical grades, etc.

That is why the majority of medical schools have a P/F or H/P/F grading system for the first two years.

Just because OSU is living in the dark ages, does not mean the rest of the medical community is.

1. I've already communicated with the senate & student affairs.

2. It will start this coming school year. (Fall 2004 possibly, Spring 2005 at the latest.)

It looks like more have joined the SDN since I've been gone. Welcome to the group Shannon and Aimee. Justin good luck with your move. As far as the conversations about sacrifice....I plan to enjoy the rest of the summer. The sacrifices will come soon enough. I am in complete denial until August 16th. Then, I will willing face the reality. However, at the moment, I do prefer denial. It makes like much more pleasant.
 
I agree with Katz, I am just cruising through the summer....spending time with the kids and wife,,,,GOING ABSOLUTLY NUTS WAITING....lol
 
I read the message about getting together as a group, how about we shoot for the 23rd (since it sounds like most people will have moved to tulsa by then.

Also, xray(or anyone interested) you wanna play in a poker tournament with me wednesday night it's just for fun at the stadium (81st & garnett) message me for times etc. if interested, helps eat up the summer time.

The boyfriend and I are doing all the last minute packing and panicking to get ready for the big move. The latest...thought the truck wans't coming because I confirmed it on the wrong day. AHHH :wow: But its all worked out now.
Anyway, as for getting together, I'd be for it...will just be unpacking and will need a refreshment break.

Oh and by the way, only one noble soul offered to help my broke foot a$$ with unloading the truck. The offer still stands: Beer and Pizza on me. We're looking at next week, Tuesday (19th) or Wednesday (20th), depending on when the truck gets here.

Everyone: the 23rd is just a thrown out there date, i'm free anytime. My suggestion for the 23rd would be someplace nice/entertaining I'm thinking along the lines of Shoguns (a Benihana type place) but it can be like $18 a plate there... Or anyone with a house and a barbeque.... That would be fun.

Hey everyone, I just now got done with my move to Tulsa and got my internet up and running so I'm new to this site. I'll be starting with you in August and am looking forward to it. Just thought I'd get my foot in the door.
