OSU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am waiting for a bus to hit me or something because things are going too good!!

It could also be that first anatomy test, or if you can avoid it long enough it is sure to be the first Neuro test.

I remember when I felt that way when I was first accepted. Good times.

No but the housing prices in oklahoma, and especially the tulsa and surrounding areas are much higher than the national average. Heard that on news 5 the other day.

You heard wrong. Tulsa is the 8th cheapest city in the nation for housing and the entire state is well below the national average.

With OOS'ers, they seem to get real picky. Sorry 'bout the rejection but you do have North Texas for DO's and some real good MD schools in Texas.

Texas schools are very difficult to get into.

Just saying what i know I heard on a local news channel; lets not dig this skeleton back out of the closet...

Texas schools are very difficult to get into.

Since hes from Texas, there would be an in-state advantage. Thats all I'm saying.

bumpity bump bump bumpity bump bump...look at frosty go....

thanks for the bump, hows the end of the semester commin with everyone?

AMAZING!! This was the best semester EVER!!! Took 19 hours of upper level chemistry and law classes and made straight As while working two jobs....got into medical school and got engaged! I'm definitely excited about this winter break!!!!!!!

Phlame, by the way, who is your mentor going to be for INBRE this summer??? And what area of science will you be doing research in?

Oh, another funny thing...I recieved my rejection letter from OU yesterday!! haha!!!
"It's my unlucky task to inform you that you will not be recieving an interview this year. Please apply again next year."

HAHA That cracks me up. There is no doubt in my mind that I am going to the best school in Oklahoma. My GPA kicks thier average GPA's a$$ but because I was one point below thier MCAT scores, they won't even give me an interview. I seriously wouldn't go there anyway, I want to be a D.O. but I think it's crap that this number game makes or breaks applicants. But, that is the way it's always been and always will be. I threw that letter away after I read the first sentence!! The funny thing is that underneath that letter, there was a postcard from OSU with pistol pete with a stethescope (I can't spell) around his neck and on the back was all the admissions people signatures with a merry christmas on it!!! LOL!

Not sure who my mentor is yet, but i applied first decision neuroscience, second genetics, and third immunology. They pushed back the deadlines all the way to february 4th so it'll be a while before i find out if i made it for sure. My two references were from my allied health chair and the chemistry chair and both are active in INBRE themselves so I believe I have a real good chance to get in with my 4.0 and high tests scores other than MCAT.

Lol that right there says alot about OSU since they don't follow the flow and put happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas and that they even sent you a letter!

I hope people in the area are safe with all the ice and no electricity.

I have a cousin who lives close to the campus, and they are out of power. Is the campus closed? Saw on the news where the University of Oklahoma is about the only place most students can go to get warm and study for finals. Must suck, I just wonder how much worse it sucks trying to study for med school finals w/o power.

Anyway I finished my classes this semester with b and a. Pretty happy to be finished "for now", and can focus on testing my high school kids. Interested to hear how others are doing for the holiday.

Im done with three of four classes thus far and have all a's.

Well I finished yesterday with my Human Dissection Final. Sadly it looks as though I'm going to have 3 A's, 1 B (Biochem), and very possibly a C in Dissection. The final over the brain/skull and neck was pretty ridiculous. Tedious minute details doesn't even begin to cover it. I also feel that a little bit of Senioritis has bitten me. I feel for the people without power. Ours was off and on there for awhile and we had friends stay with us that had none. Right now I'm driving around with 2 buddies cleaning up limbs from peoples yards making a little extra Xmas cash. Hope everyone is doing well. If you are waiting on an interview, relax and enjoy the season. Worry about that stuff afterwards. If you're in, have fun, it's one of our last breaks. Hope everyone has a great Christmas!! I'll be checking in from time to time, but probably will not post much unti afterbreak. Caribean Cruise in Jan.

P.S. Anyone heard if all's well with Dr. Mom????

The power thing seems to be better in Tulsa. I was there all day looking at schools for my fiance to transfer to in order to finish up his bachelors and then get a masters and the power seemed to be fine. A MS-I friend of mine told me that power was off during finals so they put all the 1st and 2nd years in the most well lit area and had them test anyway!! That cracked me up! NOTHING stops them from getting you your education!!! At the OSU-TULSA campus they told us today they were full on the health science students studying on their campus during the problem.

Honestly if I were in med school, I'd want to get my money's worth so they better test me! lol.

Well looks like the snow tonight isn't really all that much to worry about. Makes me laugh.

this thread wont die on my watch...:p

lalala...finals are over! bump

Anyone know when the next round of interviews will be. Have heard that jan interviews have been reviewed, have they already contacted people?

Yea! Finals are over! Only Orgo II left to go spring semester!

Spent last week shadowing at OSU Medical Center - 3 days in Emergency, 1 day in Surgery. It was fantastic! Saw lots of procedures. All the doctors (especially in the ED) were great. Watched one surgery (but it was a long one...close to 5 hours including prep time) - aortic aneurism. Special thanks to Drs. Michele Fowler and Gavin Gardner!

Had tree damage, lost internet, but didn't lose power. We're all okay. :) I'm in the middle of a move within town right now (sold our house, but new one isn't done yet so this is a temporary move), so still crazy.

Glad you had a good time in the ED! Sorry I wasn't in house.

I just received phone call from Sarah, have interview scheduled for Jan 8! Now I can sleep tonight and worry about my performance at the interview.

Merry Christmas

Congrats on surviving the weather everyone and also on shadowing lisa. I am actually shadowing the ER on wednesday for some time and will be shadowing once or twice a week until school resumes. I think it'll be alot of fun.

Congrats on getting your interview setup saylor!

OH MY GOSH, saylorsdad!! I am SOOOOOOO excited for you!!!! Good luck! I know you will do great!!!!

Have actually been looking forward to the congratulations. Thank you all for the encouragment. I think I'll do ok on the interview, I've been to around 30 for teaching jobs and they pick you apart "phone past employers, call your college prof's, and call your preacher" so this one should be a bit easier. Still it's pretty high stakes so I am not taking it for granted. I am going to make a list of past interview questions, type my answer and probably retype my answer.

congrats and good luck! For my interview the last question they asked was "List 5 prescription drugs and their function." It caught me a little off guard, so just giving you a heads up:thumbup:

Get out of here they asked you about five perscription drugs and their function? I will prep for that one, but if accepted and you are accepted and they don't ask that question I will get payback.

Don't fret. The OSU interviews aren't bad. :)

working in a pharmacy, i know quite a few.
Lets see, the common ones:
Aldara - HPV warts
Valtrex .1 gram and 1 gram - herpes
Viagra - You know what
Levitra - translates to "The flame of life" ednough said
oh and Cialis - Better than viagra in many testimonies

Or you could go the psych route
Abilify: Schizo
Seroquel - the mentally disterbed
Methadone - recovering addict
Alprazolam - nerves/ocd/anxiety
Ambien/Lunesta - sleeeeeeeeppppp and drive drugs

Pain Killers
Tramadol - the unaddictive pain killer
Hydrocodone - most abused pain killer
Oxycodone - stronger and more adictive pain killer
Mepergan fortis - aka meprozine - another combo pain killer
Carisoprodol - strong muscle relaxant

I actually heard that from several people about the medication thing. I think it just depends on the interviewer. I'm just wondering how many people they have put on the waiting list! I hope not too many...

heh, I've already been rejected  But yeah one of my interviewers was a pharmacology professor. The interview was pretty laid back and typical...and then they threw that one in. I rattled off 4 right off the bat, but for the 5th all I could think of was viagra and I kept trying to think of another.

But don't stress over it too much, and good luck!

Already though of viagra I think I'll open with that one just to lighten the mood. I don't care what is next I think it'll be funny enough they won't either.

Thanks for the heads up on that question, haven't seen it posted in the interview feedback section.

Hey all,

I talked to Leah yesterday and she told me they have only offered 49 seats so far. On top of that, there have been a couple of accepted people who have turned down their offer, but she could not remember exactly how many that was. This means that the class is not even half full yet! which is great news for us still on the waitlist, and you, saylorsdad along with everyone else who will be interviewing in January.

She also said that the next time they will be reviewing applications wont be until the second week of January, when they start interviews up again, so everyone who is still waiting for a call can relax a bit till then and stop hyperventilating every time a UPS truck drives by.

Sorry to hear you got rejected, UTBME. I am the guy from Utah who interviewed the same day as you. Good luck with your other options.

Thanks for the update; that is awsome that there are still many open spots I promise that if they offer me a spot I'll be there the next day with money in hand holding my spot!

I also talked to a 4th year med student from OSU-COM at southwest medical center when I was shadowing today and he said that they are adding 10 slots a year for 2-3 years beginning with the next application cycle.

-Side note: It was alot of fun shadowing today, got to see alot of ultrasounds and a shoulder re-alignments and a many other things.

Thanks dude. I was bummed out for a few days, but I got over it. I hope you and your family are doing well and that everything works out for you and you get into the school of your choice

Thanks. I guess everyone on this board will know if I get into my top choice, right?

I must say, though, I feel very fortunate to have an acceptance at a great school (KCOM) where I will be really happy at if I do not get into OSU.

Hope things work out for the best for you as well.

I've been in communication with a few students at OSU-COM in their fourth year and also a few of the admissions people and I've been getting a large hint that the whole ordeal with the teaching hospital contract is a done deal and OSU will be losing it.

My parents are now pushing me towards OU and I don't know what I should do. Its more feasable financially because I'd be able to live at home, but I really like what I see at OSU.

Thoughts?

Well, nothing is done yet and those particular rumors aren't even traveling around the hospital/residency programs at this time. Don't make a decision about OSU as a medical school based on the hospital, anyways.

Thoughts?

The state owns the residency spots, besides a few of the specialty spots which are not medicaid/care funded, I don't see how that would make a big difference. i would imagine St Francis would LOVE to have some resident minions running around.

We were told when we got interviewed that if they lost that hospital, then they would work with Integris Southwest in OKC. It is a nice hospital... actually took a little visit myself in an ambulance this year! (everything's cool) So I can say first hand... they are very nice people.

I know SW Med center is awsome as its where I've been shadowing. I just dont know how'd they integrate all their residecy programs there.

Well Merry Christmas and Happy Newyear to everyone! [aka bump]

Oh and for the grinches, "Happy Holidays"

It's almost 2008! YAY!

It's 2008. I can now say that I'm graduating NEXT YEAR! YAY! lol. Well, this is just another try to BUMP this thread, since the last one clearly didn't work.

Happy New Year, OSU peeps!

Hopefully this thread isn't completely dead just yet. I was put on the waiting list at the beginning of December. I sent in a new recommendation and my new grades (i got A's in all my classes last semester, including biochem and molecular biology). Could this be enough to get me off the wait list????

I don't think the thread is dead yet I think everyone else is out on break and actually not thinking about the application process or trying to forget about it. As for me I have interview next tuesday so I'm reading everything in sight.
