Since I'm mixed and I look/sound American enough, most Russians think I'm not Russian and say all kinds of things in front of me, about me or not about me but just plain embarassing. I have so many stories to tell. 😳![]()
I'm allways careful what I say in public even if it isn't in english. You never know who's listening. That explains why I'm seeing a bunch of chuck Noris pictures.Do you like my beautiful profile picture ? It's Doppelgänger week and you are supposed to change your profile picture to someone famous you have been told you look like. Inadvertently, I changed my picture to JFK, so I guess I look like JFK

I am mixed too! Filipinos think I look Pakistani and Pakistanis think I look filipino. As you can imagine I had quite an identity crisis in high school. lol

I love when people say things in another language and think you don't understand! I have a friend from thr Czech Republic and once we went to this place to eat and the ladies were saying all kinds of things because they didn't think anyone understood but he said something back to them and it was pretty funny. I also have a large identity crisis! I am mostly Latin\Spanish but I look like I could also be American because I have green eyes and I don't speak Spanish very well. Its funny when people say stuff in Spanish and I understand them though.
Oh, don't you love that.... how about nail salon ladies who clearly are talking about you with pointing and signaling all involved yet they think "stupid white people" will never know hahahahahaI love when people say things in another language and think you don't understand! FOODISHKAS!!
My almond pics didn't turn out...but I need to make a whole lot more almonds next week anyway so I'll put them up then.
Stroganoff! (Which, my wife tells me, actually originated as a Russian dish?!)
Steamed Rice...
The finished product...
It tastes better than it looks... Sour cream and Worcestershire sauce don't exactly make a pretty picture, LOL. But damn it was delicious.

Lol I was on an elevator in school and these three indian girls get on and in Urdu theyre talking about how people on the elevator think they are crazy for being loud and obnoxious and it gets quiet and im like, "YUP" They started giggling like little school girls in embarrassment.
Urdu is awesome... I wish I had had the time to take an Urdu booster at DLI. I elected for Arabic (MSA) and Dari, though.
Man, I'm getting excited about interview invites going out for my number one school, but this year the Texas A&M thread is DOA. Maybe my odds of getting in are going up?
Ishka... So is that equivalent to 'ito' in Spanish? Like when someone says besito or la pobrecita?

How do you learn languages in the military? Is it really by using that Rosetta Stone stuff or hands on info?

👍 Add flavor by yelling "MIJO!" at the beginning of your sentences, too.

Besides English, I'm 3/3/2+ on the DLPT (fluent to high school level according to the DoJ) in Spanish, Persian-Farsi, Dari, Arabic (MSA), and conversational in German thanks to my wife.
We went to the Defense Language Institute as part of our training (linguists, interrogators, Signals Int, etc). This training, while mostly classified, included full immersion (If you're caught speaking English, even off-post, with anyone but family, you can be re-classed NOA [needs of the Army, very dreaded]) and it was an amazing way to learn. You were taught only by culture-appropriate instructors (Many of whom emigrated from their country and ended up teaching @ DLI) and again, immersed into the culture... The food, the clothing, the nuances of society, etc. After PT, you had class from 0800 to 1600... Monday through Friday and often activities on Sat and Sun.
It was an amazing experience and if I could've learned 10 languages at DLI, I would have.
Rosetta Stone isn't bad for maintenance but I don't know how well you could really learn the nuances of a language through it.
WOW. That's a lot.... Actually quite impressive. Isn't Arabic (besides English) one of the hardest languages to learn?!! I've been meaning to ask, what was the best part about the Army for you?
I would love to learn new languages..... I really really wish I had time to travel and be emerged into cultures like that.

I'm fluent in two and I've learned Spanish and German from school. I've picked up some French from random books and stuff.

I should note that I learned Spanish through a combination of classwork @ UCD (Go go 15-unit summer courses!) and working in Woodland, a small town near Davis, where I worked at an auto parts store. It's at LEAST 80% hispanic, and half of those can't speak more English than "I need an a-starter for un Chevro-let pick truck", etc. That was also a bit of an immersion in and of itself, since English was scarcely used besides with fellow employees. For a time, in the district, my store was classified as a "Bilingual only" store for employees because of the huge lang. barrier problem.
I believe Arabic (Farsi shares the same alphabet but with fewer grammar/syntax idiosyncrasies, and it also adds two "letters") and Chinese-Mandarin are considered by linguists to be "the hardest." But the DoD classifies languages into 4 main categories: 1 being easiest, 4 being hardest. Cat 1 lang. includes Spanish and French, Cat 2 is stuff like Tagalog, Cat 3 is Farsi, Hindi, Urdu, etc and Cat 4 is Korean, Arabic, Chinese-Mand, and a couple others.
Hm, well contrary to how I often make it sound, I enjoyed a lot of the Army. I really loved the esprit de corps that came w/ being on the best all-volunteer fighting force this planet has ever seen. I enjoyed the structure, I enjoyed the physical exertion, the belongingness, etc... There was a great deal of pride wearing the ACUs.
And learning languages is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself as a human being. Since language is arguably the best distinguishing characteristic for us as a race, expanding one's knowledge of the world's dialects is truly an effort in maximizing one's potential!

Wow, that Stroganoff ( Russian indeed) is a killer ! Looks sooooooooooooo yammy, like it's begging to be eaten. Especially the little mushrooms appeal to me. 👍 👍 👍 😍
Let me test your knowledge of Arabic,
my name in Arabic means light or illumination, can you guess ?
Let me test your knowledge of Arabic,
Well baboshka, I know that light, as in, luminescence, is pronounced "noor" (The same in Farsi, also) and illumination (not intellectual enlightenment) is "ta-NO-veer", derived from "noor"... I wish I could type in this box in the script, but I'm not sure how to do that. =-/ I can write it and scan that!
Not sure how either noor or tanoveer at all relates to "Cheburashka", which is a fictional horse-type thing like "Puff the Magic Dragon" in American culture, right?

For you, Chebs!
I am more fluent in written Farsi and Arabic than most people who live in America and speak the languages (and are of the descent).
It always shocked middle easterners who can't even write their own language that I can... as a total cracker.

If you have delay days/canceled snow days do you have to make them up @ the end of the year? The snow is starting to melt. That's a good thing since I was worried about any more delays and make-up sessions for my classes![]()
I hated that in grade school when I lived in Boston and we'd have 101 snow days and have to make them up 🙁

On Friday, we had a Drug info class cancelled, so that was rescheduled to Monday at 1 PM (when we normally have no classes). PDA was rescheduled to next Tuesday at 8 AM (when we normally have no classes), and then on the same day, we have PDA again at 9 AM.

We haven't got any snow days here. But we did have a class cancelled and they just posted notes and said "learn this".

What a hassle.

I have to get on that too. I get to be even more in debt

I barely learned how to fill out a FAFSA yesterday. It was annoying. I have a question...when it gives you a value for your contribution, does that mean they give you less financial aid because they assume you can contribute a certain amount? I tried looking up some stuff on it, but it was kind of confusing (sorry if I sound dumb). They gave me 9000 as a value so does that mean my max I can take out will be less by 9000? When I was in undergrad I had a scholarship and tuition reimbursement so I didn't ever fill one out (my mother filled out my very first one when I was 17 and we basically got denied for fed aid).

If your EFC comes out to be 9000, they expect your family (and you) to be able to cover up to 9000, so they might limit the amount of loans you can take out. But I dunno for sure.

No they will give you more than 9,000 for pharmacy school. They give you whatever you need minus the 9,000 that you are expected to pay out of pocket I'm pretty sure. You can probably take out more private loans for living expenses and stuff if you want, but I would try to keep it minimal obviously.

Watch out for high interest rates.

Uh... what if all my income from 2009 won't be income in 2010? The EFC calculated from the past income still counts for the next year's expected contributions?

I love being poor.

Yep, they use the previous year to estimate the current year.

Yeah they go by what you made the previous year because they're assuming you've been saving or whatever their logic is. So yeah, if someone made $100,000 last year and lost their job last week they're pretty much __________.

I see. Yeah, it would just be me paying since I am 27 and all- is it true they make you use your parents tax info til you are like 22? BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! . I work hard for my dinero. 🙁🙁🙁

If you are filing as a dependent. If you are in your second year of professional school, you start filing as a professional student.

I'm assuming it's the same for pharm and med school:
For the purpose of getting federal loans they will not consider your parents income. Your school may want your parents info though for institutional need based aid decisions.
So I will have to pay 9000??? W.T.F??? That is more than one semester of tuition at my state school COP!!! UGHHHHHHHHHHHH

How the heck did you manage to end up with 9000 EFC? Isn't it calculated at like 10% taxable income or something like that?
You will be expected to pay up to that much, and the estimated cost of attendance would be calculated by subtracting the EFC from the total cost of attendance, and your loans would be based on that number.
It does seem to be around 10% of the taxable income. But you know there are some rich kids out there

Then I filled out something wrong if it is only supposed to be 10 percent. I only made like 45K, unless they count something else? I have no idea. If it is wrong, what should I do????

I'm not sure how they calculate it; all I know is the school uses the EFC # to calculate the aid they'll give you.
I goofed on my FAFSA because I haven't looked at my taxes yet so I accidentally added income that wasn't actually there. I'm waiting for it to be filed so I can fill out a correction FAFSA to fix the mistake.
