Anyone know the ratio of PNWU accepted out-of-state applicants?
They do not publish the number on their website but just said they gave strong preference to applicants who tie to their states or neighbor states. I don't have any tie with them so I wonder how much is the ratio they accept no-tie applicants?

Thanks.

(I am friends with the prior Dean of PNWU) You have to look at that school as DO WAMI, it is set up like that. So 75% of their students come from the states that don't have medical schools: Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho + Wash preference.. The other 1/4 comes from other states. Hope that helps.

Yes, they do. They specifically state that they look to accept students from the pacific northwest - i.e. Oregon, Washington, California. I was accepted to PNWU and have lived in CA my entire life (though technically the valley, not the "NW"). There are some other states I think that are considered the pacific northwest too, but I don't know for sure. If you really want to go there, then let them know your reason. I know they really aim to educated people who plan on staying in the pacific NW. Hope that helps!

Thank you both!!
I personally have no tie to the state or its neighbor. I live in Northeast (NY, Boston..) all the time and may only travel to CA ten times in the past. I won't mind staying in the CA or its neighbor after the school but it may be hard to convince them now....

My GPA is ~3.5 and MCAT is 26. You guys mentioned about they only take 25% (or even less) OOS, so I assume they will only consider the OOS applicants with outstanding academic record, right ? I am not sure if I should even consider applying....Any advice to me? Thanks!

What draws you to PNWU from Boston? Yakima is a terrible place to live. It sucks there. I grew up about 50 miles from there and wouldn't wish the area on my worst enemy.

The school might be fine, I don't know much about it to be honest. Just trying to give you a locals perspective on Yakima.

So I just attended a forum with the admissions coordinator and some students of PNWU in attendance yesterday... they do seem to give some preference to NW students, but I wouldn't let that deter you from applying. For instance, one student mentioned that they intend to spend their career as a physician in the military and had no intentions of staying in WA or the NW - the admissions member said that this is no problem. I would just advise to stress that you intend to practice in an underserved population. But yeah, Yakima is pretty terrible. Good news is they do their rotations outside of Yakima; could end up in the greater Seattle area which is pretty nice.

Also, the faculty stressed that grades and MCAT are benchmarks for interview invites, but then it's mostly up to their assessment of your personality.

Wait, what's so terrible about Yakima?

Asking for details on this because I'm from a beautiful area of the PNW where all anyone does is complain about how boring and stupid it is. That is what long hikes and good books are for.

On the other hand, if Yakima is one of those awful Fresno-type places with nothing but burby sprawl and a permanent low-slung haze, then forget about it.

Fresno is a decent comparison, but Fresno is a but nicer.

Crime, run-down, crime. Other than Miners not much stands out about the city itself. area is near the transition area between the desert and the mountains, but mostly desert.

Put it this way, I grew up in the area and went elsewhere.

Helpful, thanks. I'll think twice before applying.

Woah I didn't know it was full of crime and run-down. That's one of the reasons I want to get out if Philly. I want to go NW for the nature. Thanks for the info tho.

You can certainly get nature within reasonable driving distance, don't get me wrong. You certainly won't be in the heart of it though.

sooo, worth the secondary and primary cost?

I was an out of state applicant and got an ii with a 25 mcat. I didn't attend but a friend of mine who went there said it wasn't bad. If your from a major city and are used to the super suburb life it's definitely going to be different from what you're used to .

I was accepted from California. I have seen a few others from outside the WWAMI region. Many of the others are from western states though: CA, OR, UT, CO. On my interview day I met a student from Texas, and at the open house, there was a student from Wisconsin. If you're really interested in the school, it wouldn't hurt to apply.
