Believe me 4th yr is as easy as it will get for a while. Enjoy it while you can. Sure it is stressful but at the bare minimum if you are a decent applicant you know you will match somewhere..

I figure I will match somewhere. I just don't like not knowing where.
Plus this whole process is so non-transparent. Why should people write letters about me that I can't read? Why not let me read them? Would you say something about someone in their letter that you wouldn't say to their face? So why do it?
Why can't programs just say "Yes, we like you" or "Don't rank us highly"? Why make it so vague? You can say all you want, and they thank you for coming, but at the end of the day, you have no idea where you will be on their list.

But yeah, at least the rest of 4th year is nice.

same complaint every yr. I agree 100% but the reality is that this wont change unless the PDs and the whole medical system decides to change.

Quick response to the other topics...

about LORs... most decent people who dont want to write a strong LOR will tell you "I dont feel comfortable"..

Additionally, if you want to see what your LORs say then dont close them.. I know they will not count as much but.. if you want to see em..

padding in all this spare time I am finally able to enjoy!!!

Wishing I had less to drink last night though.

Emphasis on most. I had a problem getting into medical school because someone said they would write me a strong one and then it ended up being pretty bad. I thought it was poor form and told him so, to his face, and then explained that I had the balls to actually say that to his face, rather than trying to sabotage his career.
I just don't want to have to go through that again for residency. I don't figure I will, but you never know.

No way I can drink tonight. Felt perfectly fine when I woke up but have been feeling worse as the day has gone on. Thought I was set when I woke up and felt fine. Obviously that wasn't true.

But I had tons of fun last night. Almost too much.

Is there a such thing as too much fun?

That is poor form. I doubt that would happen in EM.. but who knows. I know of a PD of a big time west coast program that a buddy of mine rotated at last yr. Asked for a LOR (Closed), the guy then mailed it to him (keeping it closed) and the LOR was mediocore at best.. at least he let the guy know the letter would be weak..

My father always said, "more fun, more people killed." I think he might have been trying to keep us in line. Of course, he would always take us fishing and then jump out of the boat, once we were out about a mile, laughing his head off.

Had some fun with the Cruiser, hereafter known as the Green Iguana. Started it up and VRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM! Engine starts revving at about 5-6k RPM's. Quick shutdown and found that the accelerator cable had gotten stuck. Had to scratch my head like a real grease monkey on that one.

"The difference between a really good day and a really bad day is usually really very little and there's seldom really anything you can do about it."- My grandfather

The man was a truck driver but I swear that is the best piece of advice regarding dealing with bad outcomes I ever got.

Compare that to the advice given by one of the most burned out docs I've ever worked with: "99% of patients who die do so despite our best efforts. The other one percent, might well have died because of our best efforts."

Me: "Dr. ____________, have you ever thought about being a motivational speaker?"
Doc: "No, why?"
Me: "Nevermind. But I do suggest a vacation....preferrably a long one."

So, apparently if you go places dressed as Santa, people really are friendly to you. Just so everyone knows out on the bar scene.

I wonder if I'll make it to 2k by the new year. 125 to go. I think I'd be ashamed of myslef if I didn't. What else am I going to be doing for christmas break?

so much to do today.. i didnt do ANYTHING this weekend. it was great!

Dear Santa,
All I want for Christmas is to be just like IbnSina.
I hope you enjoy the cookies,
ST

Dear Sweet,
Santa has received an inordinately large number of requests for the same gift you have asked for. Unfortunately, the amount of coolness that IbnSina has simply will not fit down the chimney. Instead, I must give you this TMX Elmo instead. I hope you enjoy it.

Santa

PS: Thanks for the cookies.
