PCOM - Suwanee, Georgia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey I just interviewed on 5/13 too, it wasn't too bad. The school is nice and new. I just hope they have a lot of seats open, especially if they are accepting applications till June....😳

Word on the street is that there are about 15 or so seats left. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks. I have a $500 deposit due soon for a school I was already accepted to. I am leaning towards PCOM if accepted but idk when I will hear from them so I have no choice but to pay! I am excited about this school but kinda concerned with the accreditation. I guess I will just have to pray about it. Any advice???

You can always call the other school and see if they will give you an extension on your deposit due date. I've heard of schools doing that before, but the worst they can say is no lol!

Did anyone with late April or early May interviews hear anything back yet?

And does anyone know how they rank the waitlisted students? I noticed on the website if you are waitlisted they ask that you not call to check your status...is this normal?

Good luck to those who recently interviewed, I would think you are being offered an interview at a chance to hold a seat and not go directly to the waitlist ( that would suck:scared:).

St Joseph's and PCOM are the only two schools with no ACPE accreditation status as to date and St Joseph's was just denied "Pre-Candidate" status and it looks like they will try again in 2011. Does anyone know when PCOM will find out if they can start the class this fall?

I spoke to Aisha a couple of weeks ago and she said that the pre-candidate visit was that week, and that they should be finding out when the ACPE meets in June.

Where did you see that St. Joseph was denied? ACPE hasn't published anything about it. According to their website, ACPE has a meeting in June to decide pre-candidate status for St. Joseph's, PCOM, and Tri-State. PCOM should know the 2nd week in June. Check www.acpe-accredit.org for updates. They put their meeting minutes on the website and have the status of all schools that are accredited as well as those applying for accreditation.

Its on the school's website, they will reapply for 2011. My friend also interviewed and they sent him back the deposit he put in and they are negotiating for travel expenses students paid when they interviewed.

Maybe their site visit was conducted and did not go well, but I've never known ACPE to make such decisions between meetings. Perhaps the school pulled out...who knows.

Regardless of that situation, PCOM's program seems solid. I remember when South University went through this process several years ago and students had the same worries. Rarely do programs not meet the accreditation standards. I think this program is going to be great and you all have nothing to worry about.

I wish they banned all new schools from opening and put an end to degree inflation. Especially when there is Mercer 20 mins away. The Pharm.D. will mean nothing in just a few years unless ACPE steps up( I doubt that). I would be very concerned especially the people on here taking out 100k + in loans...just look at what's happening in Cali....its happening already

Learn your economics..supply and demand, I'm sure as the demand slows so will the supply. Think about it, why would the ACPE allow more schools then what the demand calls for??Also, nobody can predict the future of pharmacy my advice to you is to stop worrying about schools opening up and start worrying about how you will use your degree to differentiate yourself in the future.

The hardest thing for PCOM is going to be rotation spots. They were hard to come by before South came along and have pretty much dried up since then. UGA is increasing it's class size to 200 over the next few years and a majority of those practicing in GA are UGA grads... so if preceptors have to cut spots -- who are they going to cut first? The brand new school or the school that has been in the state for >100 years?? Hmm.... Last I heard, PCOM was having a hard time finding rotation spots. Good luck with that.

For those of you who might go there (assuming they get precandidate status) be prepared to travel all over the country for rotations.

+1...I can't wait to see this school when these students get to their 4th year (if they make it). There are ZERO extra rotation sites (some retail left)...Preceptors have preference to Mercer and UGA (with South getting what they can). PCOM has adds trying to hire pharmDs if they can provide rotation sites! Unreal what these new schools are trying to do. Should've stayed in philly...oh wait, degree mills already took over that city!

lol im sorry but you need to find a new hobby its kind of sad what you're doing you keep saying the same thing on this thread you haven't said anything new its kind of creepy

Their will still be rotation sites...this same argument was made when South was going through this process. Their will be some resistance at first, but students won't have any trouble getting rotations. The schools that end up paying more often get the rotation spots. I have seen this first hand as a preceptor for students from UGA, Mercer, and South. When South came along, Mercer and UGA lost several rotation spots. It's a constant effort made by all schools. PCOM has a couple years to make final plans. ACPE won't grant accreditation unless adequate preparations have been made...they'll decide that next month.
That being said, students on this board should not be discouraged by parties that do not positively contribute to this forum. Discouraging your (future)colleagues is unprofessional and immature. The pharmacy profession is not in dire straights. It is still growing and producing many opportunities. Granted, many of these opportunities have changed, but there are still plenty.

Carbox, I encourage you to treat potential colleagues with greater respect as you WILL be working with them someday and pharmacy is a very small world.

Good luck to all of you!

To all those who interviewed:

I have an interview coming up and they sent me an invitation through email and I responded and accepted but they didnt send me a confirmation of my acceptance.

Are we supposed to get another email after we accept the interview offer?

Please let me know ASAP since my interview is coming up. Thanks in advance. 🙂

You should get a confirmation email shortly, if not I would call to confirm your interview spot.

Hey, I have an interview coming up and I was wondering what the essay is like. I'm kind of scared about the essay portion since that's not in the interview feedback place. Can you guys post essay questions that you have received so I can prepare for my interview better? Thank you!

My interview is in a couple of days so a quick reply will be much appreciated! Thank you!

The interview is a great experience. Your essay will be a topic you know really well. They just want to see how you can put your thoughts together on paper. Perhaps a health care issue, political issue, or even something as simple as your greatest accomplishments. These are all topics I have heard were used. You will not need to research any topics, just brush up on correct essay format and clear written communication. It is really not bad at all. I was accepted and I don't consider myself a strong written communicator. Good luck!

So what all do we have to have done before we receieve our student binder? I've done everything and just today had the insurance sent. Think that's what they were waiting for? If not guess I'll have to call them.. Just so hard getting in touch with people I feel like. I hope they didn't send it to my old address Ahh. I mean I was accepted over a month ago.

😀 Hello SDNer's I just got back from a cruise and had a great surprise waiting for me today in the mail. I GOT MY ACCEPTANCE LETTER!!!!😀 I was worrying all last week and ran up my cell phone bill with international calls home to see if I had gotten anything in the mail. Then when I got home from the cruise, (SN: had a wonderful time despite the fact I was on pins and needles waiting :scared:) and checked my mail before going into work. I started not to go in but I was already driving. Prayer does change things, I'm so happy 😀. Now I have to make time to go up there and find a place to stay 😳. Sorry for all the Smilies I can't control myself 😛.

Not to be funny but maybe you haven't been contacted because you are not as competitive as others who have been offered an interview already.

Also who is Paige? From my understanding Aisha is the admissions coordinator, I would reach out to her.

sorry, i meant aisha.
uhmm, anyone in here submitted later in march and got interview already?

anyone out there can tell me how to improve my PCAT score on my retake on 6/19/10. My 4% on reading comprehension lower my composite to 22%. I spoke to Limiat in georgia about pcat score not in my file and Aisha recommend that I retake it. Studying Kaplan 2007 guide but having hard time focusing on reading comprehension, biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, verbal ability, quantitative ability, and I think now 2 essay writing sections. When I took it in 2006 and 2007 only had to write one essay. In 2010, is PCAT test computerized and not a paper test? Any advice improving reading comprehension and forgot most of my biology, and chemistry since took these classes in 2007. I read pcat destroyer price of $168 not worth it to improve your score. Did not get interview email and taking pcat in june and reporting to PCOM could take six weeks may be too late for a space in August. $199 fee paid to pearson for test is non-refundable since had to pay $49 late fee.

Anything is possible but being that you have been out of the game for about 3 years the material has changed drastically. Because it is too late to cancel your test in June the only thing I would recommend at this point is to start drilling through practice tests. Had you been on SDN earlier this year you would see people in the PCAT thread mentioning Dr. Collins study guide (which is what I personally recommend!)

If you decide on taking the test after June to apply next year PM me for information on Dr. Collins study guide.

Not that you want to spend more money but I really liked dr Collins review. http://www.pcatprepclass.com/. My composite went up 24 points (49-73). I only focused on chem and math and my chem went up 40 points and my math 50 points. All I can say for the reading though is just take your time. Also all you can really do is just as many readings as possible to practice.
Good luck!

You beat me to it Brunette!

Dr. Collins is the way to go for PCAT prep.

Hi everyone!
I've been watching this forum for awhile, but I just joined today 🙂
I applied to PCOM in March, and had my interview 5/6, just got my acceptance letter in the mail yesterday!
I'm SO excited! 😀

That is a tough situation but not impossible. My advice for RC is to read the questions first, then scan the passage for key words. I only read in detail when required for certain questions. The kaplan review course suggests the opposite (to read the questions LAST) but the other method worked best for me. Oh and the PCAT is still a paper test. Good luck!🙂

BTW, I received my acceptance letter yesterday! I'm so excited 🙂🙂

uhmm, anyone in here submitted later in march and got interview already?

I submitted my application April 15th and have my interview on Thursday. It took them exactly 3 weeks to contact me for the interview.

I was wondering if anyone can give me advice of what to take to the interview. I have friends and family telling me that I should take a notepad and a pen to look like I'm prepared and take notes if they say something about their school. Did anyone else take something to the interview? Please let me know! Thanks!

I brought a portfolio binder thing lol. It had my resume and pens and a notepad. I just felt more professional with it. I also wrote down questions for my interviewers while I waited so I wouldn't forget. But I didn't open it during the interview of course! Good luck!

You should have received it, you were accepted before I was even interview and I have my binder. I haven't sent in the insurance yet. Did you get the private message I sent you about logging into nucleus?
