This thread is for discussing applications to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in the 2024-2025 (class of 2029) cycle.
Drawing from your experiences in the classroom, lab, and/or vet clinic (doesn't have to be limited to these only), discuss the development of your interest in veterinary medicine and how these experiences have impacted you. You should discuss how specific experiences, cases, and/or situations have cultivated your understanding and provided insight into the veterinary medical profession.
They do not factor finances into their decision, that would be kinda discriminatory. It is for scholarships to be offered to you at time of admission. My friends who go there now received scholarships directly from Penn a day or so after they got their offers.Anyone else wondering how much they factor the financial info they asked for in the supplemental into standing/decisions? Penn was the only school I applied to that asked for parental income/debt etc.
But what if your parents make good money and you’re a non traditional student and pay for everything on your own? I’m 36 and my parents do not pay for anything of mine and I would hope that I could be eligible for a scholarship. They do not factor finances into their decision, that would be kinda discriminatory. Some are need based and some are academic based. Not everyone qualifies for one but they have quite a few scholarship opportunities. But what if your parents make good money and you’re a non traditional student and pay for everything on your own? Don't let it worry you - I also felt frustrated with all the pointedly parent-centric questions as a non trad student whose parents are quite lovely but haven't been a part of my financial sphere for decades. I answered all the questions accurately, and was still fortunate enough to receive a recruiting scholarship as mentioned by Vampyrica. It is indeed just data, not the end-all be-all of scholarship worthiness. And even if you don't receive a scholarship right off the bat, I'm constantly surprised by how many opportunities the school pushes to students for external scholarships. It's work to apply, for sure, but there are opportunities out there (state scholarships, minority, merit-based, need-based, facet of medicine-based, etc.)But what if your parents make good money and you’re a non traditional student and pay for everything on your own? I'm getting so antsy. T-minus a lil' over a month until we get a status update...
Haha, hey again! Penn is my IS so I had to shoot my shot...despite my stats lolI feel like we applied to all the same schools! About to be the longest month of my life!
I felt this LOLHaha, hey again! Penn is my IS so I had to shoot my shot...despite my stats lol
hey, I saw your bio, and I'm also a future research vet. Not super interested in LAM, though, from my experiences, but good luck!!Haha, hey again! Penn is my IS so I had to shoot my shot...despite my stats lol
Do you know when people last cycle got updates for interviews? The onset of December has really increased my nerves as well 😵💫I'm getting so antsy. T-minus a lil' over a month until we get a status update...
We got our email mid-January. and then interviews were held virtually 2 weeks later.Do you know when people last cycle got updates for interviews? The onset of December has really increased my nerves as well 😵💫
Srsly!!!!I wish everything came out in December lol the wait is so painful
How did your first semester go?!Current PennVet first year here if anyone has any questions 🙂) Rooting for you all!!
It's been great! I really love it here! We have our reproduction/development block finals tomorrow before we wrap up the semester but I really like Penn's new curriculum a lotHow did your first semester go?!
Half my graduating class from Penn State attends Penn haha. My friend has had mixed feelings but overall likes it.It's been great! I really love it here! We have our reproduction/development block finals tomorrow before we wrap up the semester but I really like Penn's new curriculum a lot
They email you with interview information in Dec/January and then they will call you post interview if you are admitted usually in February. This school is the least active of all the schools I've applied to... Does anyone know if Penn calls with their decisions?
I did apply, but have not received anything. I suspect it would be much much later, as I asked the Dean about the process and he said they first have to admit you to the vet school and then the PhD committee reviews your application. So you have to wait first to see if you gained admission to vetHas anyone here who applied to Penn's dual degree received an interview invite?
Congratulations! Unfortunately I don’t think it’s really fair or allowed to share the prompts so you might just have to wait until the program open on VMCAS in May.I am applying this next cycle to UPenn Vet school would anyone mind sending me over the essay prompts from this year so I can have a look at them
I understand! But you will have enough time, all I will share is that there was 3 essay prompts with a 3000 character limit. So not super longYeah I was hoping just to get some idea so I wouldnt be crunched when they do open
No guarantee they’ll be the same, either! I would say, for any school you’re interested in, start looking at things about the school that attract you, why you think it’s a good fit, and what inspires you within vet med. Further, start to think about what strengths you have that match the school’s values. Each school admits slightly different student profiles, and some good research on their admissions websites, or via emailing their admissions officers, can help a lot!Yeah I was hoping just to get some idea so I wouldnt be crunched when they do open
