SIGUR ROS

edit: for anyone that likes interpol, listen to the editors. you're bound to like them. go download "munich" right now. you're welcome.

morcheeba. download "charango" now.

some breakestra is good. see "how do you really feel", "family rap", and "breakestra breakbeat timeline"

a couple of random tracks:

The CMA - Windows
Geto Boys - G-code

both fire.

I'm going to go out on a limb and agree with this. Also peep the joggers ("with a cape and a cane" is the album) if you like the editors and you go by the name "mota".
Also, mota, morcheeba: beats and b-sides. it's from the big calm days. if you want it i can send it by rapidshare.

if morcheeba counts as indie...

big calm is an incredible album. i had no idea any of their other albums could even compare.

and more hip-hop--"quannum spectrum" by quannum is very good.

joggers. i'll get on that.

im gonna throw out some electro stuff too if anyone's into that-

tiefschwarz - warning siren (if you like this song, i like you)

she wants revenge - monologue is a dope track (and yes, they're pretty electro)

avenue d - 2D2F
dirty sanchez - dig it

those last two are raunchy. be prepared.

indie technically means that the group independently recorded and released their music to the public. if we're going by that definition then NOTHING on this thread is indie.

Take your tight pants somewhere else, hipster.

Argonana, try uTorrent (utorrent.com) for a client. If you're on a PC, it's the best out there right now.

Going by the definition you gave, several groups/artists on here *still* qualify as indie. 🙂 So that part was kind of...wrong. The hipster tag was simply matching your tone.

Edit: /off-topic.

ahaha thanks.

on with the thread...let's keep things nice!

i got back into pretty girls make graves a couple of days ago. pretty excellent for some upbeat stuff.

If any'yall looking for Oink invites, shoot me a PM.

And to keep the music going, if anyone is a fan of Hayden or Rilo Kiley, please tell them both to come to New England this fall. The same goes for Mark Kozelek. And tell Mirah to start touring again. And Sufjan to stop selling out shows so quickly. 🙂

What about The Notwist, anyone? their album "Neon Golden" is so amazing.
omigod I thought I was the only one this side of the atlantic who loves the notwist!! I've seen them live several times, so so rad!!!

I'm not generally a big fan of independent bands. I find that most of them suck and only get popular due to excessive radio exposure. Most of the independent bands I saw were at large music festivals such as Coachella. But, the following were ones that I think are decent.

Rilo Kiley
AM60
Wilco
Keane
Guster
The Shins
Kings of Convenience

wow yes i saw kings of convenience at this amazing venue called world live cafe in philly. hands down one of the best shows i've been to. erlend and eirik have more chemistry than any two people i've seen.

anyone like panic! at the disco, brand new, saves the day, get up kids ?

a really good song is "debussie" by daphne loves derby.

saves the day, my jersey homeboys of course. wow i'm posting a lot on this forum. i've also always loved the get up kids, saw their third to last show last summer, it's unfortunate that they broke up. i meant to also ask if anyone listens to the knife. they just released or are about to release a new album, oink's got it if you dont.

u saw the get up kids on their farewell tour, im jealous. im going to saves the day concert in a wk. 👍

whoever mentioned telefon tel aviv. props. love the fahrenheit album.

same with the notwist. yes 13&God is 70% good. haha. them and ladytron should tour together.

oink member but sorry. not a power user yet~ 🙁 seeing some of these posts, i'd gladly invite some of you.

my tastes got pretty narrow recently. i find myself hiding back into my list of:
radiohead, interpol, bloc party, sigur ros, arcade fire, bss, clap your hands, neutral milk hotel, wilco, mf doom, talib/mos def/common and edan

once in a while wolf parade finds its way in.

arctic monkeys was only good once through. new flaming lips is a step down imo.

i always try to get the interesting stuff on oink too... but man. everyone's starting to sound the same again. interpol/franz/arcade fire wannabes. plus with the new buzz on radiohead it's just not gonna happen.

the Postal Services, Interpol, Tegan and Sarah, Joy Division, Cat Power (very mellow-in-a-good-way), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.......are the Arctic Monkeys indie? I've been told that they are good but haven't listened to them yet....

panic at the disco are very tight MUSICALLY, but their lyrics are kind of idiotic at times. good stuff, overall.

tight music and good lyrics can be found in most minus the bear songs.

Long time lover of:

The Magnetic Fields- I have all of their albums and saw them at Bumbershoot in 2000!
Gothic Archies (okay, yes I love Stephen Merritt)
Yo La Tengo
Calexico (before the "alone again" craze all over the radio- that was weird!)
Sinead O'Connor
Joni Mitchell
The Rakes
Joy Division
Propaghandi
Smiths
Bran Van 3000
Thievery Corporation
Beck. I have all of his albums, too.
Bikini Kill
The Preteens, when they were around in the Bay, rocked
John Digweed/Paul Oakenfold (reminds me of some good times)
Postal Service is pretty good.
My other music loves: Ani DiFranco, Willie Nelson (saw him two nights before my Tulane interview), Spearhead/Michael Franti, Campervan, Flaming Lips (yoshimi rocks!), old Modest Mouse, Earth Wind and Fire, Old Depeche Mode, The Pretty Hate Machine album, The Cure, Indigo Girls, Led Zeppelin, etc. I could go on. I love music.

clap your hands say yeah is pretty good. but the guy's voice gets really irritating.

*stupid multiple posts*

listening to bloc party's silent alarm remixed (SICK), voxtrot, the legion of doom (half suck half good), thrice's vheissu, nightmare of you, head automatica, and some others.

Well there seemed to be a good indie music thread going on within the picture thread so I thought I'd start one. Smart people have good taste in music so where better than a pre-med forum? Always good to get new music from others. I'm seeing Jose Gonzalez, The Books, Wolf Parade, Stellastarr, and Editors in the next month or so in Philly. Anyone going to these shows? My avatar is Kele Okereke from when I saw Bloc Party in NYC this summer.

Guster

I've seen Guster 5 times in concert, and they put on really fun shows.

Does anybody else appreciate how funny electric six is?

bright eyes (tho i cant help but be somewhat ashamed), belle and sebastian, ani difranco, feist, magnetic fields, rilo kiley, mazzy star, eels, weezer..yeah i know not all of those are indie but who gives a ****..

tank you said:

i just listened to it 👍 thanks for the recommendation. i'd like to see dntel/jimmy tamborello do a mix of that.

bands i just wanted to see mentioned on the thread 🙂: ratatat, caribou, this song called dream machine by mark farina, metric, the jealous sound, q and not u, deerhoof, gravy train, stereo total, kinski, three mile pilot, joanna newsom, the weakerthans, old sleater-kinney, denali, owen, my bloody valentine, moving units, gang of four, lali puna, jawbreaker (ok that's not indie but i love them), pavement... there's too many to mention!

oh, and i like clap your hands say yeah, but does anyone else feel alec ounsworth's voice can become irritating?

No, they're still good (well, their album that's coming out in april isn't as good as feast of wire). And most of the people in calexico are also in "giant sand", "friends of dean martinez", "op8"... I think there's one other one. All of those are good, though. Especially op8 because it has a lady with a pretty voice singing about being an alcoholic. That's good stuff.

does anyone like the female bands, like jenny lewis, rachael yamagata, cat power, imogen heap, eisley??

Calexico's still good - ok, their new album sort of isn't that good. Besides, they put out so much music under so many names: giant sand, friends of dean martinez, op8 (except they have some lady singing really pretty songs about being an alcoholic)...

don't waste ur time with arctic monkeys unless u like derivative drivel.

new leaked TV on the Radio not bad for being unmastered... eagerly awaiting the studio release.

i'm sure some of you guys like edan or mf doom?

and feist is always great for gettin ur bone on. (and lookin at for gettin ur tug on~)

I love MF Doom/KMD/Viktor Vaughn/Madvillain/King Geedorah/monster island czars...
Have you heard the stuff he did for ghostface? damn! And madlib and him are allegedly gonna start recording stuff for madvillain II.

radioh3ad-it boggles my mind sometimes how similar our tastes in music are.

pitchfork. sometimes they are so damn condescending though.

Yeah, but back in 2001 when suicide girls started advertising on their site, it was all worthwhile.

pitchfork is pretentious, has way too much influence in taste-making, and occasionally really over-hypes a band NME-style but its selections are usually pretty good. most people don't have time to be digging through tons of indie music to find the gems, so pitchfork does it for us. kind of a necessary evil.

i also really like kexp.org to keep me informed on new music in a whole slew of genres.

my hidden gem to contribute to this thread is Dirty Three. Horse Stories is one of the most badass albums ever.

this is all i have to contribute to this thread.

yesss... all very original female vocalists! don't forget joanna newsom, jolie holland, mirah (did stuff with the microphones), nouvelle vague, keren ann, edith frost, tracy shed, ms. john soda (worked with notwist as well), azure ray, denali, devics, metric (the feist/broken social scene female vocalist), blonde redhead... oh and since you like jenny lewis/rilo kiley who is folky/country-like, check out neko case. her voice is also amazing. 🙂

Oh for sure! I still love Calexico- I was just listening to the radio one day and heard "alone again" and thought- whoa, Calexico is on the radio??? and my next thought was: that's a really different sound than I'd heard from them before. That's all. 😀

Red Dot, I dig Pavement, too - listened to them a lot here on the East Side of California travelling on desert roadtrips with my friend Mike who works at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab. Saw two golden eagles and one bald eagle while listening to the album "Slanted and Enchanted." Loved Stephen Malkmus' solo album, too. Good memories. I could use a desert trip...

Other good stuff: Atmosphere, Ween (god they're silly).
As to the goils: Neko Case, The New Pornographers (I love Neko), Riot-a-go-go was my friend Nova's indie band in SF (they rocked well), love Sleater-Kinney (I met them at Amoeba on Haight a few years back - very humble and cool).
Old Ska: the Toasters, Let's go Bowling...
Okay, that was fun. I'm going to go enjoy my day off and go clean my house and listen to all of this goodness! 👍
