The French Kicks
The Books
Broken Social Scene
The Exploding Hearts
Beulah
The Notwist
Her Space Holiday
and...

!!! (I love that band)

Oh and I almost forgot: The Go! Team.

Have any of you heard Sondre Lerche? That guy kicks ass. I love this thread

i'm not too into coldcut, but these two tracks "man in a garage" and "whistle and a prayer" are the heat. download em.

edit:
e-40 - tell me when to go
and
mobb deep - put em in they place

are on repeat at all times in my room.

i finally downloaded danger mouse's grey album. it's pretty good. rafa, i'm using utorrent...thanks for the pointers, everyone!

every time i listen to that album in the morning, though, i get the songs stuck in my head all day at work. kind of annoying.

yay for the classics!...Built to Spill, the Pixies, Flaming Lips, Elliott (RIP).

Yes, I still do love DCFC...and the Postal Service. A little weirded out how popular they are becoming, but such is life.

honorable mention to Calexico and Neko!!! (okay, and Ryan Adams).

i pulled out my old slowreader cd tonight. and the belles. soooo good....

Again, if any of y'all are looking for Oink invites, PM me. I've got a handful left. 🙂

Currently playing: Mark Martucci - Glass.

Oh, yeah, thanks for hooking me up with the oink tip, rafa.
I've finally got enough stuff uploaded that I know they won't kick me off soon. Oh, yeah, and I've got a few good CDs, to boot.

Mojave 3. I nearly forgot them! 👍

I like 80's music, like Pat Benatar and Pet Shop Boys. Is that weird?

Pat Benatar is rad.
No weirder than "my dutch accent." (Schmoke and a flapjack?)

yes.
anyone who was upset about the breakup of the beta band (oh, I guess I should say they aren't indie music in this thread, right?) will appreciate king biscuit time.

Anyone here like The 88?

I got a demo CD my frosh year...been hooked ever since. To my delight they've had their songs played on shows like The OC, Grey's Anatomy etc. but they still seem relatively unknown. I love practically every song on their new album, Over and Over.

http://www.myspace.com/the88

You can check out 4 of the songs here.

haha how about hipster guys that wear girls jeans? that CAN'T be comfortable.

cool calm pete.

Well there seemed to be a good indie music thread going on within the picture thread so I thought I'd start one. Smart people have good taste in music so where better than a pre-med forum? Always good to get new music from others. I'm seeing Jose Gonzalez, The Books, Wolf Parade, Stellastarr, and Editors in the next month or so in Philly. Anyone going to these shows? My avatar is Kele Okereke from when I saw Bloc Party in NYC this summer.

what is Indie Music?

the name comes from "independent" meaning they are signed to a small, non-major record label (like SaddleCreek for instance) or even unsigned, as opposed to those signed with major record labels like Sony, BMG, Capitol, etc.

but when you say indie music i think it refers to a certain sound, something that's more raw and amateur than the produced sound you hear from anything in pop music. but it's close to rock and pop and folk more than anything else. and indie music seems to be more experimental and inventive too. that's just my take on it.

brand new, saves the day, get up kids ?

a really good song is "debussie" by daphne loves derby.
All great bands. I'm also a fan of early november. I say get up kids with dashboard last year as well as motion picture soundtrack with story of the year last year.

World Cafe .... 🙁 I miss that place, I never even got to go but they have the best bands. Ever since it started to boom in the past 2 years I never had the time! 😡 Now I'm out of the area. GREAT place in philly to catch a show. AND TONS of impromtu shows.

I'm a fan of Ivy and Eisley

new tv on the radio was upped to oink the other day. i just started listening it seems pretty good.

I don't know if you'd consider these people indie, but I'll list them anyway.s

My major rotations right now are death cab, postal service, sia, modest mouse, anda couple others I can't think of right now.

A side note:

I apologize I haven't read the whole thread (tired and all that) and will edit later if needed. But aren't bands like She Wants Revenge, Death Cab for Cutie, etc not considered indie in the popculture sense. As I understand it, a standard 'pop culture' definition of indie is of course an independant label, underground, and not mainstream (I consider anything that gets played on national TV and radio mainstream) so bands like Death cab, she wants revenge, gin blossoms, flaming lips, the postal service, etc who get played on local radio, national radio, sat radio, TV, and are all over considered a mainstream influence.

Or are you considering the definition of indie at it's core as a band who plays under an independant label, their own or otherwise.

Of course forgive me if I'm wrong, I just like listening to good music and try to not apply labels to the music I do listen to 😛

I'll be honest, you wrote an awful lot and I didn't bother to read it all. But I did read this part and I agree with it. You deserve a raise.

i've read the forums a few times but never felt compelled to join. but i had to post here just to say how happy i am with the hope that some of you fine music loving future MDs will be joining me as a first year in august....once i figure out where that is 😍 👍

favorite bands: @#$%-ing arctic monkeys did you catch them on snl?? rilo kiley, dcfc, guster, franz, flaming lips, iron & wine, snow patrol, ted leo & the pharmacists, postal service, the rakes, spoon, editors, nada surf, stars, reindeer section, the strokes, amusement parks on fire....the list goes onnnnnn and onnnnnnn and that's only 1 genre 🙄

*edit - god i scrolled up and saw some of you had mentioned pinback and built to spill and i felt guilty for leaving them out. damn good music!

i just discovered the band ms. john soda, it has one of the guys from the notwist. they are amazing, and a great reason to revive this thread. go get some music.

what songs do u recommend?

My favorite "new" albums:

Catpower
Feist
Boy Least Likely To (saw them live at a bar!)
Sufjan Steven's Come on and feel the Illinoise (ok, so it's not new)

I still DJ the electronic show at KTRU (Rice Radio) once every month or so. Totally doable.

random question--i know there are a couple other college radio DJs out there. are any of you thinking about doing a show while you're in med school? (is it even possible??) if i end up near or on a college campus, i'd like to get a late night slot once a week...maybe with 2 other students so one person could skip out if they had to...

I think some of you have already mentioned this, but The Flaming Lips is awesomeness personified. "Flight Test" and "Do You Realize" from their Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots album are dynamite for lyrics, sound, and shall we say...atmosphere. The whole album is great.

Guster is a long time fav (they put on trippy live shows) and more recently I've been listening to Juliana Theory and Ambulance LTD.

I love this thread

Just because mashups are cool as hell, a mashup between catpower and matthew sweet(.mp3) (I have no idea who he is).

while mashups are the best thing to happen to music in years, i didn't really dig that. too cacophonous.

i'm sure some of you have seen this but let's see how far it gets on this thread:
There are 75 bands represented in this photo. List only ONE per person.
