Hey guys.
I am international student and is not really fluent in English. I mean I can definitely communicate but having a difficult time articulating and I start to say broken English as I get nervous. Even if I get invite for an interview from the school, I am so so afraid about the interview. Do you know anything that might help me to prepare for it? Does anyone know about good website or good tutor or so? Thank you so much guys!

Hi Bigteethrabitt,

I'm Vietnamese-American and I too had trouble with articulating myself to others for a very long time. I still fumble from time to time but it's not as bad as before, especially when I do presentations. I think what really helped me was maturity and confidence. When you stop the mentality that everyone will judge you base on what you say, you tend to communicate better and more effective. Also, know what you're talking about. There are lots of interview questions you can find on the internet pertaining to lots of health care career. Print them out and write out the answers to them. Then, go back and have a friend or family member ask the same questions and then answer them as you would a real interview. I'm positive you'll over come this set back with plenty of repetitions and determination. I hope everything goes well for you and good luck 🙂

Hello Bigteethrabitt,

Gladiator had some great advice for you 👍 [ just wanted to say you don't look Vietnamese  ]

Honestly, I used to be like you, Bigteethrabitt. I could write English perfectly fine, but my speaking was beyond horrible. I would too start speaking broken English when I got nervous  The only way to improve that is to start talking to strangers & be yourself 'cause the moment that you're super comfortable with those conversations is the moment that you're fluent in English and can do well in any sort of interview given 😉 Gluck.

Find someone to practice and do mock interviews with you. I did it with my premed and predental friends, and a couple of faculty members--really helps to get some feedback.

Watch yourself in the mirror. Kind of odd at first, but you'll notice facial expressions and etc.

Just be confident and yourself! You don't want to sound too scripted or like you are only replying with answers you think the interviewer wants to hear.

In all seriousness, people suggest practice answering questions with family and friends.

By the beard of zeus... I love this.

My biggest fear is getting the runs before the interview so I'm going to go early and get myself real acquainted with where all the restrooms are.

I have trouble articulating and say broken English when I'm nervous too, and it's my first (and only) language . At least you have an excuse!

English is my first and only language and I still get very flustered during interviews to the point that I have a hard time articulating my thoughts. Some things I've done in the past is try going over questions they may ask and practice them in your head. Talk to lots of people to get a feel of what the questions might be like so you are prepared for everything. Your answers don't need to sound rehearsed, but being prepared mentally is the best step to nailing any interview. Good luck!
