Hello!

I am a 4th-year DO student applying to DR. What types of questions (aside from some of the basics) should I be asking programs? And what are some questions I should be prepared to answer in interviews, aside from the basics?

Thanks!

For residents:

What’s the call like and when do you take it? Is it independent or is an attending in house? Is there just ED call or is there also separate subspecialty call too and what are call responsibilities? I’ve heard of programs that read everything under the sun overnight vs others where you just stick to ED or the subspecialty you’re on call for. I know of one where you’re supposed to stop reading studies overnight and go do ED ultrasounds because they don’t want to hire an ultrasound tech overnight. Some have attendings standing next to you on call while others have in house attendings but they’re like 2 hours behind you and working from home. And of course there’s independent call. Most start call in R2 and put the bulk of it there while others might start half way through R1 and have it be a regular thing the whole way through.

Core studying time. Some programs get months off while others get none at all.

IR exposure: some have 1 rotation in all of residency. The most I’ve heard about is 5 months. That’s good or bad depending on your goals. You could even ask about the process of getting into esir.

Moonlighting.

General collegiality in the program, resident socials etc.

For faculty:

Generic things like what changes have been made for the better, potentially what changes are coming. I’ve liked asking what’s something this program does that you think is a benefit or strength compared to others including even where they trained. If you could change something about the program, what would it be? Research questions (if that’s your thing).

The main point of a radiology interview is to make sure you’re somewhat normal and chill. Only 2 of my interviews had any element of intensity to them and word was they were kinda malignant places anyway. You’re going to be asked things like “why radiology?” “Why our program?” They’ll ask you about stuff on your CV. Mostly your hobbies. Maybe your research if you have any. Knowing your cv cold is good.
