but I do need to say- I had another Amish sighting today.

I work at 2 hospitals- saw one family yesterday in the cafe at one hospital.

went upstairs today at hospital #2, and almost smacked into another (different) Amish family when I got off the elevator.

who knew there were so many out here? It's not like I'm in OH anymore.... :meanie:

You can't make stories like this up ....

I'm glad that the little boy is ok, but the irony of having the mom actually WORK there is just ... well irony. tee hee. Ok I just woke up from a little nap.

I'm starting to think that kids are partly made of rubber.

I know of a little 2 year old on one of my parenting boards who fell through a screen from the second floor of her house. She only had a few bruises. Amazing.

I stuck with conservative. I'm already crazy enough, so I figured I'd at least try to LOOK normal. 😛 Evidently I managed to fool several schools. :meanie:

I know. I try not to eat too many pig meat products. They're such sweet animals - even though they are delicious.

I try to limit myself to chicken, turkey, and beef (and I don't eat too much beef).
I never eat pork either. Nothing about saving the pigs, but I grew up not eating it (my family is Jewish), and I'm just not all that hot about it now. I rarely eat beef except for a steak once in a while. I don't like poultry too much. I love seafood though. 😀

Hey guys ... just sharing a link that is pretty interesting

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=3880152

The thread is on polyheme the articifical blood that is being "illegally" phase III tested at various trauma centers throughout the US. Not many people know about it so I thought it interesting to share the news. I've known about this product for the past 3 years and have been following the stories when they pop up. They come in waves and cycles.

I say a report on 20/20 about that. Scary stuff the way they presented it. :scared:

Well, it was hard enough applying to med school with no GPA and all the other crazy things on my app. (And you thought that YOUR GPA was low???) I am a...what did someone just tell me...a bohemian. Yeah, that's what she called me.

Interesting mushy. Thanks for bringing that up.

I personally think we have to do studies like this. I think everybody agrees that donor blood is the best, but if it's not available, what else can you do? Saline, which is the standard, really can't be any better than these blood substitutes. I think some of these ethics rules have made things too regimented. If somebody is dying (which these people in the study mostly are), just try stuff. Basically anything. IMHO.

I found some coke zero at the drug store!!!

I have so successfully made the transition that now I prefer coke zero to coke classic. I wish it were more available in vending machines and such.

That's good. Even if you do nothing else, you will lose weight b/c you're consuming so many fewer calories. 👍 Plus you'll hopefully stave off diabetes for a while longer. Cheers, doc!

Personally, my favorite soda is Pepsi One. It's made with Splenda, and it's a lot sweeter than most other diet drinks are.

👍

I have also switched to coke zero, and I think it really tastes good.....although I don't think I will ever prefer it to classic

I hope it doesn't get phased out like some of the other ones!

Wow I didn't know they still make Pepsi One.

Then again, I HATE Pepsi and all Pepsi products.... :meanie:

I will deign to allow you to live in spite of such a mean-spirited, blasphemous comment. 😛

Seriously, have you ever tried Pepsi One? I swear you wouldn't know it was diet. Some people complain that it's too sweet, but I don't think it is. Then again, I really liked New Coke. Heh, you probably don't even remember New Coke, do you?

For a little while longer? 🙁 :scared:

(I have a diabetes phobia. It runs in my family very strongly).

VD - I didn't see 20/20's speil on it but I have seen examples of the press its getting right now and I'm disappointed that its all negative. While I have my own reserves on "how" they are completely this study, this product is solid and is out there for the good of all medicine. Its been in the making for years and is a great alternative to saline solution out in the field (paramedic world) especially in rural areas or more than 20 mins out from a hospital.

I think its more the ethics part that is coming into question now. This the product I wonder how they will ever determine "what is satisfactory" and not all these patients will live and there are so many complications as each situation is variable and can't be compared overall.

My parents have an old picture of me drinking New Coke!! I think I was about 3 or 4 years old.

I heard they changed it to be sweeter like Pepsi.....What a horrible idea! 😛

I honestly have never tried Pepsi One, so maybe i'll give it a shot....maybe

😍 Love them. When we were younger, our parents would make us though. As we got into middle school/high school our parents would give us them and let us have a splash of champange. At the time I couldn't drink champagne it was nasty, not that they'd let me have any. It was only special holidays like christmas, thanksgiving, and easter.

I'll probably order one tonight. Going to Cheddars and then Pirates of the Caribbean tonight with the g/f. Last night out before I leave. 🙁

I'm with you on this one ironman. 👍

The worst is when you're out for dinner, order a coke, and they say, "Is Pepsi ok?" NO.

I know! Penn State has a contract with Pepsi.....which I was honestly a little depressed about freshman year

Hey before you leave, let us know how Pirates is? I LOVED the first one, but I have heard some mixed reviews on this one so far 🙁

I can see the rural considerations. And I remember thinking that if it worked it would be one of the greatest medical discovery ever. I think the fact that only the polyheme can be given for 12 (?) hrs is not such a good idea. I think it would best used in the ambulance setting then the person is typed and cross-matched at the hospital and real blood is used after that. At least until it is completely perfected and more on the level with real blood.

I'm a total hippy when it comes to parenting stuff. I breastfeed a lot longer than "normal", co-sleep, and *gasp* cloth diaper! 😱

Haha I was talking about this the other day with my g/f.....her parents used them too

I think it's a great idea, and saves some money

Well, you're a doc, so I don't have to tell you that diet and weight are two important (and controllable) risk factors. 😉 I have the same family history. Both of my grandfathers had Type II diabetes, and my dad does as well. BTW, lifting weights is supposed to be helpful to reduce risk of diabetes too. 👍

How is Coke Zero different than Diet Coke?

I have yet to find a sugar substitute that doesn't make me feel like crap, so I try to stick to the real thing.

It's hard to explain, but I think it's just a lot easier to get used to than diet....I still can very much tell that it's a diet soda, but it keeps that coke "zing" taste and feels a little more like the real thing.

I cannot for the life of me get used to diet coke, but I can get used to coke zero

Most people my age and older were cloth diapered (I'm 25). I think my mom said disposables were just coming out but they were pretty expensive and didn't work very well. It starts getting less and less common as you get further into the 80s. 😉

They do save a ton of money and they so gosh darn cute!! 😀
