There is a NASCAR race in August that is 40 miles from Ann Arbor. I think I am going to get a ticket. 😀

Can't believe I missed that one.

Haha, I was going to PM you to see if you wanted to go too but then I remembered you hate NASCAR. 🙂

I bought my ticket - right on the start/finish line! I got a pre-race pit pass too. I will go all by myself. 😛

If you like IHRA Drag Racing too, there's a track about 90 miles west of Ann Arbor (and about 10 miles north of where I live) that has races all summer long. They let you get right up and look at all of the cars, sit in them and breathe in all of the wonderful jet engine fumes (the jet dragsters are the best!)... just another idea 🙂 I really hope you like Michigan!

I just started filling it out and it's making me mad. In this day and age, we have to fill out on a billion forms our name, date of birth, social security #, address, education, graduation date, etc. Like all the relevant parties don't already know this stuff anyway.

And some of it that could be useful, like direct deposit, etc. - I don't yet have a Michigan address, bank account, or driver's license! 🙄

Don't fill out your federal and state taxes and your state licensure application on the same day, like I just did. However, maybe if there were a nice computer program to fill out the licensure stuff if wouldn't be too bad ...

AARRRGGGHHHH!!!! This is sooooooo painful. I am trying to fill out the NC medical license application online. It won't save my information! Screw you information age! You are keeping me from getting this busy work done!

This whole thing is infuriating me. I don't have the time to hunt down all of these stupid forms and get all this stuff notarized. I received the packet on Friday, and it is due back to them this Friday (therefore, I have less than a week to do it all). They already have my boards scores, letters, CV, etc. What is the point of applying in the first place if they are just going to want it all again?

This is the best thing I have come across in this pile of paperwork so far.

Can you read? (circle one) yes/no

I got this one...

Have you ever had a medical or psychiatric illness?

Seriously, who can say 'no' to that one? And if you say 'yes' you have to attach a separate sheet explaining.

That's all it asks? Man, you could go nuts on that. Technically you're committing fraud if you don't mention the antibiotics you got for otitis media when you were 3.

That's ridiculous. Thank goodness I didn't get that one!

Does that go to your program? Seems like that is some type of violation of privacy laws or discrimination laws or something.

I'm still trying to figure out whether cytology is 90% easy and 10% hard, or 90% easy and 10% "I don't know what it is so I'll just say atypical and wait for the biopsy." Given all of that, why should I do a cyto fellowship?

Note: I am on day 3.

Obviously I have never done it, but I don't find cyto appealing at all.

If it wasn't for pap smears it would probably be palatable. The only redeeming thing about pap smears is that occasionally you find something cool like vegetable matter, pollen, Herpes, or parasites. Hopefully some day it will all be sent for molecular HPV testing and the actual smear will be a redundant and unnecessary component.

So everyone is getting new avatars, eh? I may have to join the trend.

Filling out all this paperwork stinks. For the references, could I use some residents who are my friends? They would probably get the form in faster and they are technically MDs who are familiar with me. Geez that would make this process a least a little easier.

I'm not attaching any, even though it says to. I am going to assume that they can print out the LORs I sent in my application.

I am required to have 3 for Duke hospital medical staff and 2 for the NC state medical license. I can't get them to print out the ERAS letters because they have be mailed in these envelopes that were inculded in our package. This is pretty annoying.

The people who wrote your letters should be able to print off another copy and send it with the packet.

So here I am on surg path at last 🙂 🙂 🙂 and I'm not learning things every day, I'm learning things every minute.

Now, try explaining this to non-physician boyfriend why doctors never know anything.

I find it best to just not try to explain it sometimes. It's actually nice to get away from medicine.

Yeah, whenever I meet new people, they ask me what I do. So I tell them that I'm in pathology and they're like "What's that?" Then I explain the things I do during the work day and usually they're fascinated by what I do. It seems like the lay public really don't know what pathologists.

I usually don't get that far before they ask me if I play basketball. Since I'm tall, apparently I would be good at it.

Well, eventually after they ask me if I do autopsies and I say yes, they quickly switch the topic to "So can you make eggrolls?" Apparently, I'm supposed to be good at making eggrolls since I'm Asian and all.

****it I am on call today I hate saturday call. Problem with saturday is that there is too much time before monday, so people decide that their clinical issues are now emergencies when they weren't yesterday. We need that ANCA stat on the guy who was admitted wednesday!

Sucks.

I am on weekend call CP call too, but we usually dont get crap like that...

Just a pile of Blood smears, a few body fluids. the odd Bone Marrow, and hopefully no transfussion reactions...

The heme fellow on call and attending handle the smears and fluids, so I am lucky there. Transfusion reactions I am unlikely to get through the day without seeing. The only call so far was a resident who asked if a liver biopsy had been read yet - it was done yesterday and won't even be out until monday since they didn't ask for a rush read on it.

Oh naturally...and I am knowledgable with Confucius's sayings too.

Well, hopefully call is relatively quiet. I have to go into work today to read biopsies and get all that done so that I can have all tomorrow off to hang out.

Lets see.
14 Smears, 11 Body Fluids (4 with flow requests???), 1 Bone Marrow Aspirate.

And One Heme-onc who wants to know if we ordered an acute flow pannel on his new (most likely) CML.

Now he wants Rush FISH t9:22.

Painful.

Of course. I do know there's a world outside the hospital in which mysteries like Digital Signal Processing and polychain sprockets abound... but when The Guy doesn't know if my job title is actually "medical doctor", then I think some clarification smoothes the path 🙂

I am on gyn-onc and was rounding this morning. I was in the room at the same time as a nurse. My patient asked us each who we were, I said "medical student," the nurse said, "nurse." Then the patient asked us what that meant. The nurse said, "It means I'm done with my training and she's not."

Hey beary... you are no longer a "path applicant"! You need to change that to "path matchee" or "more path resident than not".

You can rush FISH there? Here to get anything out of cytogenetics sort of requires lots of politics. Yeah, I am happy the flow and fluids are shunted through hemepath - they have a standard practice where they come in for a few hours on saturday to take care of everything, and the techs are available for any BM biopsies that are done. So far today all I have had is a transfusion reaction, a specimen delivered without formalin (Central distribution techs are not allowed to handle formalin and fill the stupid containers if they arrive empty. Go figure) and a bunch of pages about a liver biopsy that they want rushed to rule out rejection. They contacted me too late for same day service though. Sorry!

You would think, but when people outside of path put formalin on something it is usually a light splash. They think it is like soy sauce or something, we get big samples in 30-50 oz buckets with 5 oz formalin...

Actually, I think it is in their contract because every so often someone would complain about "exposure" to "formulin" and threaten to sue because it was going to cause birth defects or hand cancer or something.

So when you are bored and come here to find nothing going on, where else do you go? What is the most entertaining non-pathology forum on SDN? My vote is anesthesia because they get in so many overly defensive CRNA debates... good quality entertainment.

I like the EM forum. And pre-allo is always good for some laughs.

Depends on what time of year - when it comes to the fall, pre allo has a lot. And anytime an MCAT comes along it is vitally important to check out those forums, especially right after the scores are released.

I am always amused at how people who start posting on forums almost never start with proper grammar, punctuation, and even capitalization.

There are a few versions of the virgin poster (at least on SDN):

1) As above, the one who uses all caps and generally abbreviates. This person tends to use "THX" a lot as well as "PLZ" As in: NEED KNOW IF CAN GET WASH U WITH 33 MCAT. WANT TO BE DERMATOLOGIST AND NEED PRESTIGIOUS SCHOOL. PLZ HLP THX.

2) The one who never uses any capital letters, and rarely punctuates. Also tends to be the person who substitutes "u" for "you." Interestingly, this person also tends to post a lot in a condescending attitude and thinks that they know better than everyone else. Usually also the person who picks up on personal attacks and thinks that by calling attention to it they are protecting people who can't fight for themselves. As in: "wht are u talking about? i cant believe u think u will be a good doctor with ur attitude"

3) The obnoxious troll who just posts things to be annoying. And thinks they are funny.

4) The clueless person, who creates a new thread asking a question that was just answered in a post the previous day. Interestingly, this person is generally a mild version of either #1 or #2. It is invariably a thread about open positions, salary, or asking for advice on whether they are competitive enough. As in: "hey guys, anyone have any thoughts on the program at X? if u do it would really help me out. Specifically, wondering if u had thoughts on the quality of teaching?" The reply to this thread is often: See the thread linked here entitled "Information on program X"

Hey Andy,

Why did you switch from AT back to AndyM? (I never stopped thinking of you as AndyM anyway 🙂 ).

He is type-casted now. He'll never be anything other than AndyM with a different name.

Some of you may have to help me here 🙂 , but aren't abbreviations like "THX" and "PLZ" common shorthand in WoW? Maybe it is in all online chat or whatever but maybe these folks are up late playing WoW and just forget that they need to type real English grammar sometimes.

LOL

I assume so. I don't know much about online gaming. There is a resident in my program who plays runescape and all of the computers have runescape.com as one of the recent visited links. I have no interest in such trivialities. I majored in "real life" in college.

It's not THX, it's ty. 🙂

But you're right about the total absence of English grammar in WoW. Sometimes things are so misspelled I can't even figure out what they are.

not only in WoW but in many online games...and the list extends for pages and pages. I have a friend who plays counterstrike and he told me all the various things that kids say these days...actually counterstrike has been around for a long time...and many who play it are older folks, probably our age, who still cease to have a life.

Plus, correction: you majored in chemistry.
