Emi, those pictures made me NOT happy to be moving to Grenada. 😡
You can just do this when things get a little crazy 😉

Update on my bank account draining dog...

She's officially on Amoxi/Clav 400mg once a day for the rest of her life. :bang:

I think it's what's best for her (at least for now), but I may need to take out a Gradplus loan just to pay for her medicine

So the wind today is strong enough to blow children away. Just saying.

The beaches here have waves 5-10 feet going over bridges from it. (normally no more than 1-2 foot waves in the bay area

Is that not a free abx at Publix?

Is that not a free abx at Publix?

ahhhh... Publix :biglove: I can't wait to be near it again! 😀
It is not. Augmentin (closest alternative) is not as effective in dogs :prof:

Correct. It is just as expensive at the vet as it is at a pharmacy. 👎
My vet is rather awesome though, and upon seeing the look of terror and defeat on my face, he said he would cut me a break on the price (drops it down from $4/day to $2/day) as a congrats, good luck, and good fate gift for vet school 😍. He said he will mail me 90 at a time for the next year so I won't have a problem getting it...
I am truly grateful for this!

Yeah I was told it maintains a stronger concentration in the urine.

And people shouldn't take Clavamox. Not good for them!

Another picture from TS Debby... :meanie:
At least he's using the crosswalk 😉

It sounds like there are waves outside. It's the wind picking up and dying down. No rain for a little while now, but the wind is still ridiculous. Like moving my car when I'm trying to drive ridiculous.

Soooo I'm leaving California two days early 🙁 i called my grandpa the other night and found out all the family was over and having a discussion about my grandma and her treatment and how they might want to stop it because she has apparently deteriorated since I have been gone. So of course I broke down and wanted to come back. My flight leaves in 3 hours. I'm so thankful my bf is understating and is okay that I'm leaving early but I feel so bad for a) leaving like this in the first place and b) for going even going on my trip. I should have been home and with her and wasn't 🙁 ugh.

Why not? From a pure curiosity.

Honestly, I don't know for sure, but the husband of one of the vets I work with is a PA and strongly advised against taking it when an assistant wanted to take some expired Clavamox instead of paying for augmentin. I *think* the concentrations of clavunate aren't high enough in Clavamox to be effective.

But, don't take my word for it, I guess. Dr. Google seems to think the two drugs are interchangeable, haha.

sad sad sad case at work 🙁 8 week old miniature aussie is brought in by owner, tentative diagnosis is congenital myasthenia gravis. owner wants to euthanize, but the neurologist convinces the owner to srurender the puppy to him directly - he is keeping the puppy alive for the sole purpose of writing a paper, as this disease has never been documented in this breed. she now has megaesophagus and is regurgitating, getting worse, and her responsiveness to the medication (pyridostigmine) is getting less and less. i know that theres' a purpose behind keeping her alive, and i have no problem with science and medicine mixing together but the case still makes me sad. ugh.

Don't beat yourself up over it Katie, your family I'm sure understands that life can't come to a complete stop when things like this happen, and it's so great that you're going back when you feel like you need to.

Speaking of grandmothers and sort of dire news, mine hasn't improved much, though she was able to be returned to the nursing home where she lives from the hospital. She still can't really talk, and can barely move the affected side of her body. My mom said that when she's aware enough to be, she just seems so frustrated. But I did finally have the conversation with my mom about quality of life, and she agrees. She already asked that no life-saving measures be taken and for now, just palliative care should be done. The rest of my family is going back to visit next week, but I already am going back to town on the 14th for an externship so I probably won't be able to go next week and am not sure how to feel about it.

Not a good night for grandmothers around here. 🙁 Mine passed away two hours ago. Sorry and hugs to everyone who is coping with an ailing grandma.

🙁

Big hugs to all of you, Katie, Nyan and Hai. Just lost my grandma about a month ago, and it really just sucks. Glad to hear that your families are looking out for your grandmas' quality of life and trying to do the best for them.

Hurricanes? Tropical Storms? This NY gal ain't ready for that. Just sayin'.

Also, Emi, are you preferring inferior Publix over the amazesauce that is WEGMANS?!?! 😱

Only because Publix came first in my life. Publix brand stuff is better than Wegmans brand stuff, but other than that, Wegmans is pretty amazeballs. My BF and I argued about this for a while when I moved lol. I still like Publix subs more though.

Ugh I know, it's still hard not to feel bad about it, but at least I'm going back now.

I'm glad you were able to have the talk with your family. I'm sure it's some small comfort to have to her able to be returned to the nursing home, and having the family be able to visit will be good for her

Hai, I am so sorry about your grandma 🙁 and minnerbelle, I'm so sorry you lost yours as well 🙁

Also, I've been stuck in JFK for 3.5 hours!!! I should have been back in NC by now. Dumb flight delays!!!!!

we are really too far south for most of the storms (with the exception of like 4 in the last 100 years). i watched every storm develop last year online and was amazed how they just dont even come close. they develop at the same latitude off the coast of Africa, but as they travel west, they head north too leaving us high and dry! remember hurricane Irene? that was the only system that we had last year, but Irene was literally just a rain storm at the time! no name or fame until long after it had left! we mostly just get tropical rain 🙂

I just got word that my dog's former vet died of a heart attack. She was only 46. She was one of my role models, she was so patient and compassionate and skilled, and she was one of those amazing vets who's just as good with the clients as she was with the patients. 🙁 46! It's not fair.

Emi- No way, Wegmans brand is awesome. Mmmmm. I don't know how i'm going to go from Wegmans to... I don't even know WHAT is in Grenada!!! Uh oh, minor melt-down about to ensue 😱:scared:😱

JMO- Really really grateful to hear that news. One less thing to worry about when planning a move to a tiny island!

Katie8, hai, etc. So so sorry about your families. 🙁 It sucks, but they all know how much you care!

Especially their PRODUCE!!!!! *I'M* even gonna miss their produce section, and the cheese section, and the Mediterranean bar!!! 😱
Goodbye delicious olive tapenade, tuscan spread and fresh pesto

Dear coworker:

I know you are doing me a favour by driving me to work and back every day, but I would really appreciate it if you told me you were leaving early or would not mind waiting 5 minutes for me if I am running a little behind. I am sick and tired of coming into the office at 3pm, 4pm, 4:15pm, 4:30pm (technically leaving time) and not seeing you there. No note. No text message. Nothing. Stop assuming I can get a ride home with the girls because sometimes they can't. Give me some f****** notice so I can make other arrangements.

Also, stop overcharging me for gas.
And I really did not appreciate you saying that you were "too hungover and should not be driving" as we were pulling into work. I do not want to die in a car accident at the age of 23.

Oh yeah, and DO YOUR JOB.
Work is not the place for you to planning your bottling business.
Since the disease outbreak, we could really use your help in the field. Every time we ask you, you say "No." The lab was originally supposed to be all women, but my PI wanted a guy to help out in the field. You are that guy. So come help. You were also supposed to help with DNA extractions. As soon as the boss-man disappeared and we asked you to help us, you said "No."

I thought that by working in the lab, I would not have to deal with this laziness. I feel like I am working in fast food again with a bunch of 15 year olds who would rather talk about their drunken adventures than to help me serve a line of people.

Hmmm. That's a tough one.

trivially:
Just got a notification today that we should no longer use the term miniature australian shepherd. The name has been changed to Miniature American Shepherd due to some political thing at AKC. Silly.

so remember how I was talking about these little red bumps on my forearms...well some of them are going away but there seems to be at least one new one every day. They aren't itchy, but we had a dog come in today and scrape positive for sarcoptic mange...I helped with this dog when he was hospitalized like a month ago. So now, I'm kind of freaking out that I have scabies but at the same time I think that might be completely unreasonable since they don't have the typical appearance and they aren't pruritic at all. So if it's not scabies...what is it? Is it bedbugs? I would think that they would have been affecting me before now since I haven't changed anything in my apartment since I moved in last July. Is it flea bites? I guess that's possible, I'm constantly restraining dogs with my arms and since my upper arms are covered by my scrub top, my forearms are the only part in contact with the animal. I had a vacation ruined 2 years ago by ringworm and I have been washing my arms to no end lately to prevent that from happening again and I'm kind of terrified that I'm going to have sonething really gross and contagious that's going to make my dad ask me not to come.

It is a tough one - I'm having conflicted feelings right now and everyone at the hospital is getting attached and what not since we have to do elevated feedings and keep her upright after. I have definitely found myself being more emotional with cases lately and this is one of them. 🙁

The doctor thought I had scabies once but was not 100% sure. I had very dry skin on the backs of my hands and my whole body itched every single night. If you are concerned... ask a doctor... and I hope you never get what I had. I itched for 4 straight months before my parents finally took me to a doctor (mom is a nurse and decided to try every cream and home remedy imaginable before taking me in... and health care is free here.)

Scabies is pretty host specific and while canine scabies mites can bite humans, they cannot maintain a life cycle on humans or spread from person to person. You generally only see canine- or bovine-specific scabies on humans when the human has prolonged and frequent contact (like milking the cow every day).

Yay parasitology.

But actually... go to the doctor 😛

So remember the dog with the drain? I had to place yet another one. Another pocket formed when her incision necrosed and came out with all the suture and glue that was left over. I freshened the edges and went from there.

Apparently, she told one of the techs that I should never have replaced her drain (even though it wasn't draining and a new pocket was forming).

This was the day after she threw me under the bus to a client.

And news about the other situation?

Whatever! The pocket more than likely formed because she place the FIRST drain improperly! I mean come on. Placing it in the original wound?
