Aw man that stinks 🙁. Have you tried Khan Academy on Youtube? It's a great resource and was one of the reasons why I was able to pass the horror that was physics.

I might have to. I was doing great in the class when I had time to practice problems, I'm hoping the one B was just a fluke subject that was hard for me. We have our next "mini exam" today so I'm hoping to return back to the land of As. (I know a B isn't bad. I'm just frustrated that he changed the entire format and my grade went down substantially.) Fingers crossed things get better again. It's been a really tough week emotionally, so I am also probably reacting more than I normally would. Just gotta survive until December....

And looking at the grade distribution histogram, there is only one A in the class *grrrrrrrrr*

Well if it comes down to just not having enough time to practice... it might be worthwhile to use another resource (text, youtube, etc.) and see if you can get ahead and use lecture as supplemental instead of a primary learning tool. I personally despise getting a bunch of information a day before the exam because for me it has to stew for a bit... hopefully it gets better for you!

My physio class gets curved so that the highest score in the class is 100%. The Exam 1 highest grade was 100%, so there was no curve even though the average was below 65%. The Exam 2 highest grade was 96%, so curve was 4%. Does anyone else think that this is super weird? I find it extremely annoying for some reason. I get wanting to cap the highest grade at 100, but you can still cap at 100 while curving the average to a passing grade. lol. I'm doing fine in the class, but the way this professor does things bothers me.

In other (less important?) news, the ratio of my PB&J was wayyy off. 🙁 I made it, so it's my fault. I must have still been asleep this morning. lol.

A similar professor-switch happened to me too during physics II and it was just awful... there were more than a few times that he told us he would rather be researching than teaching us... wasn't fun at all, so I feel for you. Do you have any TAs that are available right after class if you don't understand something or if it explains it poorly?
Those first few lectures were so promising 😢

Definitely this. Watching those videos practically saved me. And this chick 👍

I agree, the only "good" part of physics was able to complain about with each other 😛

There was another guy on youtube that saved my butt during physics II as well. I think it was Brightstorm Physics or something like that? Whoever it was he was a lifesaver haha.

Yes! Brightstorm is the one I was thinking of!! I absolutely loved that guy, he's so energetic.

My Gen Chem/Biochem professor curved the class average to a 75% for both classes. He thought that people that would end up getting over 100% still deserved it because they obviously put in the extra time, while he also thought that if the class average was below 75%, he hadn't done his job well enough/properly so that kids in the class understood what was going on. I feel that's a super fair way to do curves.

My patient this morning was listed as "New 3/6 murmur." Older mixed breed.

She is leaving this afternoon with a diagnosis of 3rd degree AV block and possible hemangiosarcoma. Crap!

HCM recheck = huge oral mass, probably SCC. Why am I cursed with diagnosing unrelated, bad cancer in my cardiology patients?!

Aaaannndddddd today's mitral valve disease and "syncope" probably has a brain tumour. wompity womp womp.

Doctor from home recommends a particular test. I call four clinics in VA.
The loser: tells me they can do the test, but do I have a doctors request? I can have one sent. She then tells me I should really just come talk to their doctors and take the test I already took (recently). She tells me the test my trusted Doctor recommends is unnecessary and I should retake the test he already did. I thank her and hang up - she was almost as bad as the MD that refused to do a sinusitis culture on me last year. Geez!
#2/3: tell me they don't offer the test and ask if they can help with anything else.
The WINNER!: says they use a third test, then spends three minutes with me trying to figure out the difference in specificity between the three. My epi/biostatistics professor would be so proud.

How is the general public supposed to make informed medical decisions?!? Now for a literature search...

My physics professor is so frustrating. First off, when I signed up for the class, I specifically took it because there is one really good professor and he was scheduled to teach this section. On the first day of school, the professor got changed and there were no other classes I could fit into my schedule. Secondly, this new professor, his PhD is in environmental science and he has not taught a physics class before. Every single class he mumbles around, never lectures on the actual material, and when asked questions never gives a clear answer. I asked him to explain a homework problem the other day, he proceeded to do it wrong on the board, get a wrong answer, and then tell us "I actually don't know how to do this one, I'll have to get back to you." I understand that everyone has bad days, but how can you assign a problem that you don't even know how to solve yourself?! On top of that, based off the syllabus we were supposed to take four exams plus a final. We have taken two, and now he has decided that he would rather do a weekly 20 point mini-exam instead of the four big 100 point ones. So he is completely changing the class structure half way through the semester and he hasn't even given us a new syllabus explaining the new grading format. I was able to get a 102% and a 92% on the first two big exams, but now his little "exams" I only got an 81% because we have one day to study following the lecture where it is "taught." So there is no time to get help if you don't understand something. On top of all of this, he has magically lost one of my lab reports that I definitely turned in, so there is a currently a zero in the gradebook for that until he finds it and fixes it. Other students in the class have gone to the Dean of Students to complain because he is making the class so difficult for all of us, but nothing is being done. I'm doing my best to suck it up and survive, but when my grade has gone from a 96% to an 89% in under a week, I am not very pleased. :annoyed:
My understanding is that the class syllabus is like a contract, and if the prof deviates from it, the class must agree to it. There must be someone you can talk to about it.

That seems reasonable. Lol. 🙂 idk, my physiology professor is just terrible at teaching. Lol

Generally speaking, most syllabi have some kind of disclaimer that the professor can change the syllabus at any time. I know all of mine for the last two years of vet school have. Pretty sure they do this year too, although clinics are a bit different.

I haven't looked at my vet school syllabi, but I know the ones I had in undergrad did not have any clause like that.

3 different colleges, and I've only seen one professor with a changeable syllabus. He got away with it by having an incomplete syllabus and having the students vote on the options each week. He was tenured and had been doing it that way for years and still caught flack.

Otherwise a change required a vote by the students and possibly approval by admin.

But I suppose, if nobody complains all is fair...

Yeah, I seem to recall most vet syllabi having the clause that anything and everything is subject to change. But that generally covers the profs as majority of them have some crazy schedules as clinicians and researchers in addition to teaching.

It's just so frustrating. On yesterday's mini exam which covered torque, he screwed over the entire class. The normal rule is that clockwise is negative, counter clockwise is positive. However for the entire quiz he put an astrick on the directions and at the bottom of the page he said that it was opposite convention for this problem. So of course 2/3 of the class missed that direction and went off normal convention. Of course it is my own fault for not reading it properly and thoroughly, but now I got about a 40% on that mini exam because he doesn't believe in partial credit. Luckily, I keep all my records from classes so I was able to prove that I in fact turned my lab report in, so that part is at least taken care of.

What the actual ****

I feel for you. Teachers have a very difficult job. I am currently both a student and teacher. I understand why he did this. Attention to detail is crucial in life. It is what separates us. While most just take things for granted, a select few question everything and pay attention to anything that is different. These types of questions are meant as lessons. While most of you may have missed it, from now on you will look for those variances. You will not get the letter grade you want, but an important lesson is hopefully learned. I will admit, I have done this occasionally where I know some people will miss it, but they will learn much more from having missed the point of the question rather than another memorized fact.

Much Love to all students though, as I still bitch often when a prof manages to catch me being complacent.

Today I'll be at home tapping my foot, waiting for a person to call me about a job interview. I jumped through the hoops she wanted me to and paid out $100 to order a transcript and file an application for a professional registration which I just received in the mail today. I emailed this person a week ago and left a phone message on Friday so I've covered my communication bases and I deserve to have an answer. I'll be upset if they already interviewed or hired someone because without specific work experience that professional registration is just an expensive, useless piece of paper.... and why bother contacting me at all if you aren't going to wait at least a week for me to get the materials together to apply for the registration, right?

Well, I'm pissed that I had to call this person again to find out what's going on with this job. I'm pissed that she didn't respond to the e-mail I sent 10/26 or the phone message I left on 10/30. I'm pissed that the administrator told me "you are already scheduled for an interview" in an e-mail on 10/21 with no details about where or when. I was given information that was completely wrong and all of my efforts to communicate were ignored so when I called today, and finally got a person on the phone, I was told they already interviewed people and have a candidate selected for the position. Ain't that dandy?

that's awful.. I'm so sorry!! Sounds extremely unprofessional and maybe a good thing that you don't have to deal with their poor management.

Long term imagination is a hard thing. The moment demands so much attention, but the marathon concept is crucial. Being human is no cake walk. I often still wish I had simply been born a kitteh.

From 3 of my 5 classes this semester

Yeah, I thought the grading policy was the part you couldn't change throughout the semester. Schedules, lecture order, that's all gravy, but you can't change the grade structure dramatically (sure, miss or add a test or quiz, if the class approves, but no hooking a kid with the first test, letting it get past the W date and then change the grade to essay assignments.) We actually had this in the new student paperwork at at least 2 of the schools I went to.

Grumble. I show up to work only to be told that I've already got a lab puppy HBC on the way bleeding badly and having trouble breathing, a bad pancreatitis transfer coming, a post-op FB transfer that's not recovering on ITS way, and some random injured dog the sheriff picked up also inbound. One lf those "great - all going to arrive together" moments. Sigh.

Now I'm sitting here at 4am watching the pancreatitis case go south on me, wondering if it's going to die before ... Or after ... The owner comes in the morning. Sigh. I frickin' hate the really bad pancreatitis cases. Anyone have any magic cure-the-bad-panc juice?

At my job, we work alternate weekends. The staff on my weekend has really gotten the short end of the stick. Back in September, we worked the weekend before Labor Day, so the staff for the other weekend got a 3 day weekend, and we didn't. Our open house and the set up for it were on our weekend off, so we were expected to come in anyway, meaning we worked 3 weekends in a row. Now they're down a staff member for this weekend and asking for one of us to come in, which would mean that person will have worked 4 weekends in a row. Come the end of November, we're on for the weekend after Thanksgiving and in December, we're on the weekend after Christmas. We're also open on Christmas Eve. This means I won't be able to see my family at all this holiday season since I will never have more than 2 days off in a row, and they won't approve any vacation time for those prime weekends. Everyone but one other person has family all in the local area, within 2 hours' driving distance, but mine live several states away, and I get to see people maybe once a year. Yay. All for barely enough money to pay my bills. Yay.

The first really sad case I worked on as a VA was a papillon with pancreatitis that went south really quick. Still sticks with me.

One of my first days of shadowing we had a "pancreatitis" that ended up being really bad pancreatic cancer (aren't they all?) Really sweet, very very loved spaniel with owners who felt horrible because they thought they might have missed something the last few weeks as they had their firstborn in NICU. Crappy situation all around.

I agreed to demonstrate castration to producers with another vet at a university farm (agreed like 3 weeks ago to do this today. I got no reminder until 2 days ago. I'm standing here and I still have no clue what's going on or where I'm supposed to be. Ughhhh disorganization at its finest.

Once upon a time, I saw an unbelievable only 3 cases on a 12 hour ER shift, but ended up having to stay for 16 hours because the surgery intern called out and they made me stay instead. Worst part about this is that now I don't get to sleep in (an extreme rarity and obvious treasure) because now I have a pet to soap. So annoyed

Found the sweetest dog on the side of the road last night. She's covered in mange and is so itchy to the point that she is now covered in scabs from itching. I went to a 24 hr vet to get her scanned for a chip, she had one which had multiple numbers listed. One was the rescue she originally came from. I guess she was adopted out back in 2010. Makes me so sad that she has obviously been neglected recently. I would love to assume the best about the owner, but it's hard. I gave her a bath last night and made her a temporary bed inside for the night. I'm taking her back to the rescue today and hopefully she will find a happy ending. It is so frustrating and breaks my heart that this kind of thing happens. Whatever caused it to happen, she didn't deserve it.

And I'm freaking freezing! Aren't overnights' general lack of sleep enough? Must I have issues thermo regulating as well?

Brrrrr **** ing brrrrrr!

Can I complain that north-western Nebraska has had no snow? It should have snowed a month ago and not a single snow flake. That bodes poorly.

Hoolllyy crap I know nothing about cows and I'm taking the NAVLE in a week.
freakout.gif
Cows have 4 chambered "stomachs" including the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. They have a spiral colon. Their extensive gut is designed to get as many nutrients as possible from the microbes that really make up their diet. (The grass feeds the bugs, the bugs feed the cow.)

Metabolic diseases make up a big part of their care. Even if they get something viral, it's the keto acidosis and milk fever that do them in (Unless the virus is bad ass, but that's a whole other chapter.) Reportables include Hoof and Mouth, BSE, and a few others.

Just follow the Calcium, sugars and water (milk components) in dairy cows.
