You could consider Nuvaring too. I'm wary of IUDs since I've had friends that had issues with them (although with the political climate now, I'm starting to consider it). The ring is great since it's monthly, and I don't have to remember to take a pill everyday, and I don't even notice that it's there. My periods weren't awful to start with, but are still milder and lighter now. I used to reliably get cramps the first couple days in (not debilitating, but not pleasant), but not anymore.
Not sure if that's one I can do with my clotting disorder, even being on the blood thinner. Only options I was told were IUD and possibly mini pill.

I already have to remember to take one pill every day and I'm not great at that (my hematologist would be soooo mad at me) so not sure how could I would be with a pill that has to be taken at the same time every day.

So really the IUD is the best option for me but I just know I would be one of those unlucky people who has an issue...

Getting my Mirena put in was an awful experience - I passed out, and was on the couch for the next few days. Basically had a period for like 3 weeks straight after. But since then - nothing! Now it's amazing. Haven't had a period cramps or anything for almost 2 years.
Yikes. I'm on my second Mirena now. <1 minute of strong pulling pain that made me want to curl up in a ball, then it was over. Didn't even take the recommended ibuprofen after. Second one went even better since the CNM had me take misoprostol the night before.

I'm thinking of getting something (bc/iud) before I head over to Ireland for 4 years especially with uncertainties regarding insurance over there. My periods suck (I was stuck in bed for Friday night until this morning, thankfully it's the weekend) and all of this is helping me figure out what I may ask for when I'm home for the summer. The only problem is I hate going to drs and I've never been to an OB/GYN. I'll need to find one first

I took 4 Advil before and 2 after. Also used misoprostol the night before. Usually have a high pain tolerance so I'm thinking my uterus just hates me. Definitely made me terrified to ever birth a child! Haha

I wanted so badly to love my IUD. I had a Mirena placed and going in wasn't too terrible. For the next two months though, I had such severe cramping that it would stop me dead in my tracks and even had me bed ridden a few days. I ended up having it removed by my GP who made a comment that I have a tilted cervix that may have contributed to the pain (sorry if that's TMI!). Removal almost caused me to pass out. Even if my experience wasn't great, I would still recommend it because if it works for you, it's soo insanely convienant. I haven't been on any form of BC for two years but I was recently prescribed an oral form to try. Hoping I can finally "be an adult" and learn to take something every single day. I'm mostly good with my levothyroxine but every now and then, if my schedule changes, I totally forget.

I have a bad cold :arghh:. I loaded up on meds and I'm totally not sure how I did on my K-state interview today. I think I was pretty much running on autopilot. I loved the school though so now I'm going to be dreading hearing from them.

Ahhhh! I'm sorry! Interviews while feeling sick are the worst! The last interview I had (it wasn't for vet school admissions), I had bronchitis and was coughing and dying the whole time. I got the job! But they might've felt bad for me because I was coughing up lungs inside the interview!

Oh that sounds awful! I don't know if the interviewers actually realized I was sick. I didn't cough or sneeze once (tried not to) but maybe I could've used the sympathy 🙁. I guess I will see what happens!

All this IUD talk is making me heavily consider one. I've had break through issues since 2010 (have been on at least 3 different pills since then) and it's finally less obnoxious on the current BC but still happens. Also intern life life and taking meds at regular times is not happening regularly.

Also I am still at work. I was done at 6 pm technically. I'm literally just waiting to round the overnight doctor. I'm so tempted to just freaking leave

Were you wearing a purple suit and a butterfly pin?? If so I helped check you in! If not then there was someone else there today who's sick, which isn't surprising since it's that time of year.

I was put on BC as a teen because of super heavy, super long periods. Anemia and weakness, but no cramping as long as I was active, and I played soccer, ran track, and was the equipment manager for the band.

I started on the pill. Eventually we figurwd out that I was having some weird reactions and nothing slowed or stopped my cycle. Kept getting switched as eventually they would make me break out, cramp, and get nauseous. (And eventually made me more anemic, drop white count, and sleep almost all the time... but that wasn't proven, just correlated)

They switched me to Nuvaring thinking if they localized the hormones, than no more problems and I started having the worst cramps and lots of extra bleeding. When I stopped it, I got cystic and started 17 day cycles with still 8ish days of heavy bleeding.

They wanted to place a Mirena and I just said no and managed my own damn cycle for almost 3 years before getting pregnant only 2 months ahead of my plan. (Post drunk birthday...oops)

Based on what happens during pregnancy, we kinda wonder if I have an allergy or something to Progesterone, or another likely thing that sounds scary but isn't...

Anyway, they did talk me into a Mirena after kid number one using some crazy scare tactics about insurance. The thing was placed wrong, stabbed my husband, rubbed me, made sex incredibly painful, and caused massive cramping. Periods were lighter, but still happened occasionally. After 2 years, I made them take it out.

Managed myself again for another near 3 years and had kid number 2. Mostly planned timing. (Planned, conceived, lost it, got into school, and discovered I was pregnant again. So not "trying," but not "not trying.")

This time, I just wasn't paying attention yet as I hadn't gotten back to regular plus new move, new job... and hubby was not helping at all. Next plan is he gets snipped so I don't have to worry about it. We also seem to have the gene that promotes breast cancer for those that take synthetic hormones in my family, (3 of 3 aunts who had hysterectomies and went on hormone therapy developed breast cancer a set number of years later) so just wiser for me to avoid taking anything if I can help it.

I REALLY hate it when I get a critical (obtunded, 90.1F, BP too low to read, bite wounds and other trauma literally everywhere, tachycardic, etc.) patient that I assess and think "you know what, I can save this one" .... and then have it initially stabilize .... and then have it spiral downhill into oblivion.

I hate how that exact same patient some days I wouldn't be so invested in, but for whatever reason <this> patient <this> day I really wanted to save.

I hate how the patient went through all the blood I had in the hospital, needed more, and I didn't have any more units to pour into it. And no more tools left in my medicine and transfusion therapy tool-chest to make it quit bleeding.

I hate feeling helpless in the face of a dying patient with owners that will do anything I recommend.

I hate second-guessing whether I should have cut it when it initially stabilized. (I didn't. I gambled on it stopping its own bleeding based on my risk assessment of "survive thoracic surgery" vs "clot on its own" - and I lost.)

I like ER medicine. And today I hate ER medicine.

🙁 Been there as the tech, so not the same, but I get the gist and I'm sorry.

My eyes just suddenly started burning, either from my face lotion or contacts from two hours ago, and I still have two more classes then driving back to my apartment. This'll be fun

:biglove: LIS.

I feel like your posts on ER medicine as a newer grad is some of the best insight into what that side of the profession entails. I appreciate the good and the bad you share with us to put us somewhat in your shoes to experience what you experience. SDN is so lucky to have you.

🙁 Been there as the tech, so not the same, but I get the gist and I'm sorry.

I imagine you get it.

In some ways it is worse for a tech. A patient like that requires a dedicated tech, who never left the patient for the 8-9 hours I worked with it. That is emotionally rough on a tech, especially when deep down you know for the last couple hours you are going to lose the game, but the owners aren't ready to give up. I at least keep moving and see other patients out of necessity.

@LetItSnow, despite all of your super-best efforts, knowledge and expertise, sometimes nothing will save a patient. Nothing.

In the past, I have fit the description of this type of pet owner - that is, I will do anything recommended by the DVM to save my pet. Sometimes, my pet has been saved, and recovers, and lives a long life. At other times, and when it is obvious that my pet is ready to go to sleep forever, I am deeply grateful that my pet's veterinarian will perform this humane act of compassion, kindness and love for my beloved pet. This has happened on two occasions. Each time, I saw the look of helplessness and compassion (as well as anguish and resignation) on the face of my pet's veterinarian. It is a look that signifies to me "how deeply" veterinarians truly care about the pets they treat. As a veterinarian, you have a special calling; and you are a veterinarian who clearly cares about the health and wellness of your patients. Despite your best efforts, I realize you were unable to save this particular dog, this time. At the same time, I'm also sure you have surely saved many dogs in the past, and you will continue to save many dogs in the future.

So, if you don't mind ... I just wanted to say "thank you" for being such a caring and dedicated veterinarian ... and thank you to all veterinarians!

Man, when I have cases like this, like super refractory status epilepticus or the young dog that got generalized tetanus after a spay, with owners who want to do everything they can, I feel absolutely shattered but I think it must be so much worse for the techs who literally sit with the patient the entire time.

I'm upgrading my rant from yesterday

It's not even breakthrough bleeding anymore, I just started a full blown heavy period today, ten freaking days earlier than I'm supposed to. Not to mention BC is supposed to make my periods lighter and this is not a freaking lighter period. I want to fight someone. :punch::rage:😡:annoyed:

That's frustrating. How long as this been going on for?

I found BC helped eventually with timing/heaviness (after about 3 months, before that it was just a PITA), but now when I am off of it my periods are heavier and more randomly timed than they ever were. Plus now I get cramps, which I never had before starting BC or while on it.

IUD would be so nice, I'm just too scared to get one due to horror stories I have heard. (Friend of mine got hers accidentally ripped out, other friends were bed-bound for up to a week after getting it, etc)

This is only my second pack of this particular BC, but I have literally never had anything like this happen before. I've been on multiple different kinds of BC before and have never had any issues with starting periods this early and this heavily, even on other BCs that I had to switch off of because they weren't strong enough to prevent spotting/breakthrough bleeding after I was on them for a while.

Plus I'm even more confused because my periods appear to be getting worse on this BC with each month (last month I started spotting on this same day in the pack, but did not just straight up get a period), not better/more regular/whatever. WTF? I just wish my body wasn't like this.

At mechanics. Just got a quote for almost $2,000.00 on my vehicle that (I thought) was running really well. I sure as hell didn't budget this much money on my vehicle at this time.

The vehicle is old enough that (in my opinion) there is no point doing every possible thing for it because it will probably be done within the next few years anyway. However, I am not a car person so I really don't know what is actually super necessary to do. I'm also mad at myself because my first though was "are they trying to take advantage of me?" despite the fact that I am paying them for their expertise that I don't have (much like in vet med, and everyone loves hearing that from clients).

Ugh. Don't have time to do any of the actual work today so just taking the quote and hopefully my father/neighbour can give me some feedback on it.

Ronald is a good truck, and up until this point in his life he was pretty cheap too.

That stinks! And don't feel too bad about thinking to protect yourself. It's always a good idea to have someone look over a quote if you have the time. I hope the actual bill comes in cheaper than it's quoted.

Def don't feel bad thinking that. It can be incredibly beneficial to have a mechanic you can trust...I recently got quoted $600 to do some work on my car at a place down at school. Took my car to someone back home that I usually use and he did it for half of that!

Second opinion is a good idea! You might also be able to ask your mechanic to tier things for you. I purchased a "new" used vehicle last year and there ended up being a few additional things the dealership didn't know/mention. He basically prioritized what needed done to make the vehicle safe and gave me a grocery list of everything else so I could save up. I do really trust him though.

Example about getting a second opinion: Took my truck in because shifting gear was acting up. First place said I needed a whole new transmission for a couple thousand dollars. I wasn't about to do that. Went to another place down the street, it was just a vacuum hose and they replaced it for free. Works perfectly now. Easy fix that the first place didn't even look at.

My schedule would be so much nicer if I could get up at 6am. I would have time for yoga, to check email, and not rush myself (overall way less stress) if I could force myself to get up, but everyday I end up sleeping until 20 minutes before I need to be out the door, nothing done and it is ruining my days because I feel overall less productive. I have tried for months now with going to bed early, all types of alarms, trying to psych myself up, turning the lights on half an hour before...and nothing I do seems to work :bang:

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! Definitely will be getting a second opinion. My father is taking a look at the estimate for me tomorrow, and my neighbour offered to look at my truck himself (he is a retired mechanic), too see what he thinks of the assessment. If he agrees with what needs to be done, he offered to do the work for me. He was the one who did all the work when I first bought the truck, and last time he did it for cost of supplies + a bit for labour.
😍

In terms of what they suggested getting done @vetmedhead, here is everything they recommended. They also split it into 2 invoices of what they thought was the most important, and the other stuff they thought would be beneficial.
Repacking my wheel bearings, new wheel cylinders, brake fluid flush, brake fluid (I actually don't remember him talking about that when he went over the invoice, I think he was saying because of something else I might have to eventually get it done?), new alternator belt, new air filters, new fan belt, new ball joints, wheel alignment, new engine gaskets, valve cover gasket. This could definitely have some inaccuracies, I'm translating from a invoice that just lists products and time used.

ETA that my truck is a 1994, so it is old. So some of the stuff above might make more sense.

ETA2 because this is the rant thread so I can't sound too happy: When they put the tag on my rear-view mirror to remind me to come in and get my tires torqued/tightened/whatever tomorrow, they covered up my school parking pass. So I got a ticket by the time I got out of my lab. 🙁

There are alarm clocks that are lights. They are supposed to mimic sunrise and make it more natural to wake up. I've heard great things about them. Maybe that would help?

Wow that's a lot of not necessary things! Definitely have your super awesome neighbor look at it instead, I don't know a lot but most of that is crap. I'm sorry about your ticket too. Those jerks should have taken some time to notice.

My life. I got one of those alarm clocks that shake your bed once and it worked a bit, but it broke. Now the phone/ alarm clock's vibration is strong enough that I feel it when I'm sleeping.

Have you tried timing when you go to bed with what time you wake up? I use like https://sleep-calculator.com/ and I used an app on my old phone and it tells me based on the current time, what time I should wake up at. Or what time I should go to bed at to wake up at a specific time. I started doing that last year because I slept through my alarms like you for a solid month and a half. It goes in hour and a half increments (the length of a standard full sleep cycle, so the options are like 1 1/2 hours, 3 hours, 4 1/2 hours, 6 hours, 7 1/2, 9 hours) so the idea is that your alarm goes off when you're the most awake in the cycle, and you'll be "more refreshed" (take it with a grain of salt).
It takes a while to get used to it (especially if you miss the bed time and it's an hour until the next one) but now I don't sleep through my alarms anymore!

I think Ive heard about those. Defs going to look into it, because I do know sunlight really helps me.

And thanks @cdoconn I'll try that alarm! I'm to the point of experimenting with whatever until I find something that works.

I use an app called Sleep Cycle (free for iOS) that is an alarm clock and tracks your sleep cycle and you tell it when you need to be up by, but it can wake you up up to half an hour before the set time (default setting) based on where you are in your sleep cycle. If you're in deep sleep half an hour before the alarm time, it's going to wait until later when you're hopefully in lighter sleep, but if 20 minutes before the alarm is supposed to go off, you're in super light sleep, it's gonna wake you up then instead of waiting 20 more minutes to do so and you most likely being in deeper sleep.

There's a similar one if you have an Android phone, it's called Sleep as Android. Same features!

I used sleep cycle for a while. It was interesting. I can see how it would be useful, but I usually wake up before my alarm several times anyway so I stopped using it. I dislike having to charge my phone all night every night in order to run it.

😍

In terms of what they suggested getting done @vetmedhead, ETA2 because this is the rant thread so I can't sound too happy: When they put the tag on my rear-view mirror to remind me to come in and get my tires torqued/tightened/whatever tomorrow, they covered up my school parking pass. So I got a ticket by the time I got out of my lab. 🙁
I would definitely appeal that ticket if you can! Maybe your school will still be jerks and say it's on you to make sure your pass is visible, but it's worth a try especially if it's an expensive ticket.

Yeah, I can see how that'd be annoying if you didn't charge your phone regularly at night. I use mine a fair amount during the day, so I end up having to charge it at night anyway so it doesn't inconvenience me

The blisters on my feet keep getting bigger and bigger each day :arghh: and it's my own fault because I keep walking and walking and walking, but I can't help it because I want to see and do as much as possible while I'm here and my only transportation is my feet and the local bus system 😳 poor feet, blisters in 4 places, sigh

This sounds like me when I was in New York this past summer. It wasn't until day 3 of 4 we were there that we realized how easy and cheap the subway is, so we did a LOT of walking. It was worth it, though!
