My dachshund had surgery on his neck today to fenestrate the discs so they wouldn't cause anymore trouble in the future. I'm flying to Tennessee in the morning for my interview. It's killing me that I can't be there when my puppy comes home from the clinic tomorrow or the day after. 🙁

I hope Tennessee sees how dedicated I am to become a DVM!

Best of luck with the interview and the little man! :xf:

CT's Rant O' the Day:

Pilling Thomas (a.k.a. FAILcat) consists of opening the appropriate compartment, inverting the pill box over half a can of his food, and sticking the bowl in his cage... yet the ER I'm stuck boarding him at while I'm in Seattle is going to charge me an additional $6 per med. Per day. Cat is on seven medications. FML. 👎

Oh, and during the Great Western Interview Debacle, somebody evidently managed to steal my debit card number and has been using it to purchase pre-paid cell phones. 👎

And Shifty Rent-A-Car still hasn't refunded my deposit. Angst! 👎

It's a good thing I like ramen...

That sucks, though as somebody who worked at a boarding facility I kind of understand. We always charged extra for meds too because we actually took the time with the individual animal to ensure that they consumed the meds. We wouldn't even allow our kennel techs to just mixed it in food; animals were either pill-popped or it was stuck in cheese, a "meat ball," peanut butter, etc. If the owner didn't want to pay to have us medicate the animal, they theoretically COULD pre-bag their animal's food and have the meds mixed in with it (though we strongly discouraged this) but we made absolutely no guarantees about the animal actually CONSUMING the meds if they went that route.

That being said, it DOES add up, so sorry that it's super expensive-I think with 7 meds you should get some kind of discount. And that REALLY sucks about your debit card! Hope you get that mess straightened out soon!

It's not Boost mobile **** is it? Because that happened to the husband, and after some research online, he found out that it's completely random. It was his debit card for his business account too, so he was highly displeased.

Yeah, I always pilled by mouth or meatball when I worked in kennels. Under normal circumstances, I'd probably do the rest of mine that way, too... but this cat has to endure so much medical stuff that I try to eliminate any unnecessary button-pushing. He's a saint, but everyone has their limits, and I'm hoping to avoid reaching a point where he prematurely says "enough". He hates having his mouth messed with (it's the one area he's always been funny about), so I don't fight him on this one.

And, if you press the pills into the top of the food, he pretty much inhales everything in three bites. Tops. Kitteh does not miss a meal. Or seem to realize that his is perpetually fortified with loads of chalky white stuff.

I suspect it's kind of a bit of a PITA tax... I know these guys require some degree of extra attention and can seriously throw things when it's busy. We had one client that collected (very) special needs dogs, and used to board them during major holidays... I loved the client, and the dogs were awesome, but they'd invariably add an extra hour and a half to your shift. And I had very little experience at the time and was petrified that I might inadvertently break some of them. 😳

Hopefully, once they realize he's not much of a PITA, they'll take pity and bill nicely. 😉

Thank you. 🙂

No problem... keep us posted! 🙂

Nope... it's Verizon Wireless and Page Plus. When I saw the first charge, I was hoping it might be an innocent mistake, but when the second materialized (with another company) I knew something was up.

I'd have had a coronary if it were a business account... especially if I had a lot of automatic payments set up that would have to be altered. Yuck.

man, that sucks... I had someone hack into my itune's account to buy gift certificates last year. Thank goodness it was only $50!

That's ridiculous. My clinic charges an extra $3/day for boarders with meds, regardless of how many meds the boarder has. All of our kennel staff is trained to give meds properly- meatballs, pill pockets, cats get butter with pills, if pilling an animal, wash it down with a syringe of water, etc. We are not allowed to leave the animal until we have watched it consume the med.
Seriously, $6/med? 😡..

Am I allowed to say that I HATE Excel right now? 😡

I'm trying to put some of my thesis data into graphs... I want to compare results among snail species. It makes a PERFECT histogram for my first snail species. So I laid the data out exactly the same was as the first graph, and it creates a graph the opposite of what I want. So I try it again... and again... and again... and I fiddle with the options... and it won't work.

*headdesk*

Wish doing it by hand was still acceptable... like it was in junior high. 🙄

CT - after following your western adventure I'm totally bummed that life is throwing you this many curve balls. 🙁

I've found that Powerpoint works better. It sticks a sample graph in the screen for you with the data grid. That way you can change the data and see right away how it's affecting the graph. Last semester I had to do a few graphs and couldn't figure out how to get Excel to work. But Powerpoint saved my butt. It's almost like doing it by hand but with the computer. No need to understand any complicated tech stuff.

I was telling my roommate about a sick dog at work who was owner-relinquished but we got money to treat him and I'm in the process of looking for a home for him. (that part is 🙂, he's turned out to be a complete sweetie and i can hopefully place him in a foster home really soon)... but that story triggers her to go to craigslist and look at the pets available.
She starts oogling over all the puppy mill and private breeder designer puppies and saying she wants one. This is the roommate who insisted on getting a 9 month old papillon over the summer from a "rescue" across the country which was really a puppy mill but she refused to believe it, "took care" of the pup for about a month, meaning leaving him whining hysterically in his playpen while she was never home, and then didn't care for more than a day when he died of intussusception.
Now, she's saying she needs a husky puppy or some other cute fluffy thing that has to be a puppy because it won't be cute when it gets older, and I said something about behavioral issues with certain breeds and the benefits of rescues and how mutts are awesome, etc, no need to spend a ton of money on the dog, better to save it for when the dog needs medical care, on and on. Her answer - well, when it gets sick, then you just get rid of it. She was half joking, but still, to even partly mean that... 😡😡😡

just an update. didn't really know where to post, and figured this might be the most appropriate thread? so i've been talking to my mom throughout the week, and the state of affairs in japan is pretty mind boggling.

though my parents and relatives live in areas that were only minimally affected structurally by the earthquake/tsunami, and thank goodness their lives aren't in any real danger as of now, life is totally different from how it was just a week ago.

a few days ago, while skyping with my mom for about half an hour, there was an aftershock like every couple of minutes, and her cellphone and tv would alert for a bigger earthquake like every 10 min. their condo on the 6th floor was pretty much constantly swaying. every night since the 11th, they've had to jump out of bed at least a few times during the night because of a pretty major earthquake. poor cats are so traumatized that they freak out with the slightest shakes now (and before, even a magnitude 4-5 didn't affect them at all).

supplies are short, so there are long long lines at the gas station (where many are simply out) and grocery stores. there's very limited food, and the stores are out of things like rice, bread, instant foods, and milk. what little they have left is rationed out. pet food is also hard to come by. public transport, which is the only mode of transportation for most people (and people easily commute over an hour to begin with for school/work usually) is sketchy at best because of the rolling blackouts. the weather's been pretty chilly over there, so in order to accommodate heating, trains have been shut down at unexpected times to conserve energy. there's no gas whatsoever near my parents' place, so my dad had to go out and buy an electric bicycle to commute over 10 miles to work. apparently, he got a flat tire on his way to work today, and my mom had to go out and try to retrieve the bike. that whole ordeal just to get to work, which is pitch black from the rolling blackouts for all but 3-4 hrs of the work day. my grandparents are scheduled to be no heat, no power from 6:30 - 10:00 pm. my mom's planning on hanging the laundry to dry inside the house today juuuuust in case radiation starts floating by. who knows what's going on with that. there's a mass exodus of foreigners out of japan right now, so i hear the airport is chaotic. i dunno if any channels have come back yet, but as of a few days ago, tv pretty much shut down except for continuous news coverage.

my parents live in an area that was artificially made by filling in parts of the tokyo bay and packing it down, so the earthquake's caused the ground to not only crack in many places (like several feet long and few inches wide cracks that slide past each other and get wider and thinner as the ground moves) but also liquify. hopefully, this damage won't get much worse than the moderate flooding they've had with subsequent quakes in the near future.

the situation my family's in, as hard as it is to believe from how modern day japan operated a week ago, is very VERY fortunate. the hard hit tsunami areas are completely devastated, and aid for survivors is not looking good. even though a lot of people want to help, it's difficult to even send supplies out there. and if that wasn't bad enough, reality for a lot of these people are just setting in as they are slowly finding out just how many of their loved ones have died...

Edit: oops, just talked to my parents and realized that the info about food supplies are a couple days outdated. there are regions that are definitely still affected, but the greater tokyo area for the most part is starting to become better stocked so people aren't as worried there anymore about food shortages. even when it was a worry, people didn't get into fist fights or anything and were very good about sharing. and apparently, the second set of rolling blackouts for the day didn't occur in a lot of places because people really cooperated and voluntarily saved energy as best they could during the day. so there's a really great sense of community and pride that at least allows people to feel good about themselves and each other. and it's nice to hear about these things happening at all levels. when my mom went to the nearest bike shop to get that flat tire fixed, the man at the store told her it'll take about 20 min so she should go get some grocery shopping done next door. when he finished, he even went over and found my mom at the store to let her know that he was done.

Minnerbelle-- glad that your family is doing okay. I cannot fathom what it would be like to be over there. Thanks for the update.

After reading that, I feel as though my rant is extremely trivial. Last night the SO and I got into a huge fight. I feel like I've been run over by a truck this morning, my eyes are puffy and blood shot and I am on the verge of tears. I want to just go back to bed but I've got a full day of work ahead of me. *sigh* I'm extremely depressed and no matter what I try to do, it seems like I'm always doing something wrong or upsetting someone.

Minnerbelle - your post makes my heart hurt. I hate that this happened to Japan. I still haven't been able to get in touch with my friends because their internet/email servers are down. They're in Gifu so they're probably not in harm's way. But still.

watashi wa totemo kanashii desu. 🙁

Minnerbelle - thank you for sharing that with us. I'm glad your parents are safe and sound. I'll say a little prayer for them tonight. It sounds like all of you are going through a rough time right now 🙁

It's sad that all of this is going on right now, and my radio station and news station is more concerned about the concussions in hockey than they are about what's happening in Japan.

I was away at a conference last weekend. I got called "antisocial" for choosing to read the paper at a restaurant instead of sitting with the clique. I was the first person to order my food, so while I was waiting, I decided to get caught up on the news in Japan. It broke my heart. Didn't bother telling that to my schoolmates. They wouldn't have understood. Soem of them were making jokes at the hotel while I was watching the footage for the first time on TV. I was sitting there in shock, and they were talking about how the Japanese shouldn't be living on a fault line. People SUCK.

I got a crappy grade in algebraic physics. So I have to take physics with calculus or something totally off the wall like ASTRONOMY to replace my grade on my application.

What the heck vet school. WHAT THE HECK.

So I came home to a large cockroach on my bathmat. Insects (and ESPECIALLY cockroaches) freak the absolute **** out of me and I don't know how but I killed it. I still have the heebyjeebies two hours later. Those two hours were spent cleaning the bathroom and kitchen, swiffering/vacuuming and doing every bit of laundry, including sheets and blankets to make myself feel cleaner somehow.

The thing is, while sometimes a bit cluttered, my apartment is CLEAN and I've not had problems with bugs of any kind for the almost year I've been here. I don't leave food/crumbs around (and certainly not in the bathroom?) and I take my trash out regularly. I called the leasing office and asked about a bug guy - she said he comes Fridays but had already gone for the day, so she made me an appointment for NEXT Friday. Needless to say, I will be jumping and having a heartattack at the sight of any and every dark colored lump of dog hair, bit of mulch or whatever happens to find itself on my carpet. UGH do I hatehatehate bugs.

Minnerbelle, I'm so sorry that your family is having to deal with this. I grew up in Tokyo and can only imagine the effects that this would have on the entire city. It's pretty difficult to hear about and be unable to do much for the people there. I've also been pretty lucky in that my friends that still live there are for the most part unscathed (except for the massive amounts of fear). I hope everything continues to go well for your family.

It's too bad that cockroaches prefer clean, warm, moist, dark places like a bathroom, and not dirty smelly places. My friend's dad used to work at a dairy processing plant years ago. There would be hundreds just hanging out on cylinders responsible for pasturizing the milk (I do believe). Once a light was turned on, they would scatter.

I feel your pain. I posted on here a few months ago about my own terrifying run in with a cockroach. I'm impressed by your bravery!! Be strong! 👍

On the lighter side ... just talked to my brother in law and he said that Sake and candy are the most plentiful items available in the stores. I was thinking I could last a long time on alcohol and candy! 🙂

My wife and I have been following the pet tragedy as well. Earthquakes and tsunamis don't often allow time for people to save their pets. A few interesting links for y'all:

My poor, gentle GSD was attacked at the park today by an unleashed dog. We had to take her into the emergency vet where they removed most of her left ear - thank goodness it went for the ear and not the throat! Unfortunately we also discovered some perianal fistulas and a grade III/VI heart murmur that wasn't there last July. I think I want to pay for some chest rads this week, just to see if anything really nasty is lurking in there...

Man, when it rains, it pours. Sorry to hear about that, hope everything ends up okay with the diagnostics. :xf:

2 minor rants: 1. Spring Break coupled with Daylight Savings Time has royally screwed up my sleep habits. I'm going to be sleep walking tomorrow. 2. I LOVE the weather we have been having but it has brought out all the motorcycles in my neighborhood. My neighbors insist on revving up their bikes every time they take them out. They do it loud enough to set off car alarms. It's probably another thing contributing to my changed sleep habits since they don't care what time of night they do it.

Reminds me of that SP episode, where they try to redefine the word ***.

At least you get a spring break at a decent time when the rest of the modern world is off. Ours is not until April 15th. Then we get out of school 2.5 weeks after we come back from the break... really hardly seems worth it. I'd rather just tough it out for an extra week and get out at the beginning of May...

Minnerbelle and others, my heart goes out to you. I am glad that most people have reestablished contact and are doing well. Best wishes for everyone affected by this tragedy.

Though it is very petty in comparison to much of what else is going on, I am having trouble with a friend. I don't want to give many details, but basically there was a tough situation, and I did what I still think was the right thing to do to protect someone else. But while I haven't had any repercussions for what I did, it has negatively affected a great friend of mine. I feel so bad because I had to choose between doing what I thought was right and doing what my friend wanted, and now it has turned out worse for her than I thought it would. Even though it was the right thing to do, I wish I could un-do it so that my friend wouldn't have to live with the consequences. Life is so murky sometimes....

 That's so sad. Sorry you're going through such a tough situation. At least find comfort in the fact that you were really between a rock and a hard place, and either way, your choice would have hurt someone in the end. There was no way to win this one, it seems like.

SOV - great stuff! Thanks for posting! Also, way to go for wanting to help out! From what I'm understanding from folks who have friends/family in Japan, the best thing we can do right now is give monetary donations to organizations.

As for a 'good' charitable idea, my hospital system sent a donation to Doctors Without Boarders and we're currently putting another donation together for Shelter Box. I consider them both to be good reputable charities. Also, if you're seeking animal based groups, Veterinarians Without Boarders is an idea.

If none of these float your boat, check out http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=1221

This, 100%. I went through something similar where I had to do what was right, even though it resulted in my sister hating me. I had to hold on to the belief that she'd understand eventually why I did what I did, even if she didn't understand now, but I knew that if I went against my conscience, I'd never forgive myself. 🙁

Almost a year ago I got bit by a cat who was overdue on her rabies vaccine by like 4 years but was indoor only so I wasn't going to seek medical attention and do the whole rabies quarantine thing. However, the cat bit me again and this time it was on a joint so I wanted to get antibiotics just because I've heard horror stories about untreated cat bites. Anyway, so I went to the urgent care that our workman's comp requests we use. I had already scrubbed with chlorohexadine and iodine under hot water for what seemed like an eternity and had one of the doctors wrap the affected fingers so I would stop bleeding. So I spent maybe 10 minutes at the doctor's office, 7 of that was waiting, the other three were the doctor removing my bandages only to tell me it looks like I cleaned and bandaged it well and sent his nurse in to rebandage (not nearly as well, may I add). I had to recheck in 10 days. At that time, everything looked great so it was just in and out. Here's where it gets interesting...I started receiving bills from the urgent care clinic for $360. This was a workman's comp claim...I shouldn't be receiving bills at all. Plus WHY on Earth was it $360 to put on crappier bandage than I walked in with? So my office manager and I fought with the workman's comp company for a long time and finally we spoke to someone who said the claim number was one off and that's why it wasn't being processed correctly. She apologized and said it was taken care of now. That was like 3-4 months ago or so.

Saturday, I received a letter from a collections agency saying I've been sent to them for failure to pay my balance at the urgent care clinic....SERIOUSLY?! So my office manager called the workman's comp company again and spoke to someone else who said it looked like it was never resubmited after the info was changed. So now, when I'm trying to apply for loans so I can go to vet school, my once stellar credit has taken a hit because of something that isn't even my responsibility. I am beyond upset. There is my rant. It's supposed to be taken care of now...but we see how well that went before.

Word of advice, don't use The Hartford as your insurance company

Hang in there, NB. I feel like I make even more of those decisions as I get older.... 🙁 But, you are a good person. It's life that sucks sometimes.

Hang tight, SDN vet - it'll be okay.

Mini-rant : spring break is driving me bananas. I'm seeing so many wonderful sights, animals & plants. But the people on this trip are making me a bit bonkers. I'm grateful for the trip but I really miss my family. My two friends from school are great & all but sooooo self-centered in comparison. Oh well 😳=just hanging in til I fly home. Gotta get a picture of the sunset here!!

Word of advice, don't use The Hartford as your insurance company

unless you've been receiving collection letters for awhile now it shouldn't have impacted your credit yet. They usually wait a decent amount of time before they actually report even if its been 3-4 mo since the doctors visit. I wouldn't freak out. Just give them a call and tell them that it is being sorted out and they will most likely put a note in your file and it won't be a problem

I would scream and cry with glee if I only had to wait 7 minutes to see a doctor. Usually I wait 30 minutes to see my family doctor and 1-2 hours to see a doctor at the walk-in.

Makes me kind of envy American health care in that respect... but having to deal with insurance and stuff like that... no thanks.

re American healthcare: doctor office wait times completely vary and the emergency room is usually hours. And if you don't have health insurance you are waiting a LOT longer than that... my girlfriend waited MONTHS to get her lithium levels checked (super dangerous if they are too high) and a lump in her arm checked out (possible cancer) because she couldn't afford the doctor. She is already paying out of pocket for health insurance and most of her (very necessary) prescriptions because the insurance won't cover that or most doctor visits.

Anyway she's fine now. But the healthcare here is only good for people with money.

Well, the health care here is mediocre most of the time, and I can come up with a dozen or so situations where it was an epic fail. On the bright side though, nobody has to pay and we all eventually get what we need 😛

And I can come up with a dozen examples where it's fantastic. Sure, I've had less than stellar experiences once or twice, but at the very least, I never have the concern of "I can't do anything about this cough/lump/stabbing pain because I can't afford it". And any of the problems that I have had are pretty similar to stories I've been told by Americans (like bunnity said, they still have wait times, they still don't always have access to specialists, etc). I loves me my socialized medicine.

ETA: Not looking to get into a big debate about healthcare, just needed to say my bit. Now back to enzymes for me, and I'll return the rest of you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I hate, hate when the shelter I volunteer for separates dogs that were relinquished together. 🙁

I was originally commenting on the "I had to wait 7 minutes for a doctor". When I read it, it sounded like the OP was mad for having to wait 7 minutes. Whether or not that was the intent, I don't know.

Was just saying that 7 minutes isn't a big deal.

Yes, it SUCKS that americans have to pay for health care. But when I lived there, my mom would flash her insurance card at the hospital people, I'd get my blood drawn, and I'd be in there for 20 minutes tops. Not 1-2 hours like it is here. And the results would be back within 24 hours... not 4-7 days like I've experienced here.

I don't know if you guys are experiencing the same thing down there, but because of doctor shortages, the wait times for a lot of health services, are inconvenient. Not as inconvenient as being denied health care... but it still sucks sometimes.

Well let's see... I saw 3 different neurologists for my sleep condition. One said idiopathic hypersomnia with suspicion for non-classical narcolepsy. That was $750, and I think half covered by insurance. Second said I might just be someone who needs a lot of sleep with hypopnea and possible delayed sleep phase syndrome. That was well over $5000 (out of pocket at first, and insurance eventually paid most of it, but it was a battle. The third just took $500 from my pocketbook for a 30 min consult and told me I had "complicated sleep issues."

I went to see the doctor twice because I knew I had viral meningitis (5 coworkers with the same exact symptoms at the same exact time tested positive). I was told I was a hypochondriac by those 2 doctors, and ended up at the ER a week later where diagnosis was confirmed with a spinal tap. Out of pocket costs were over $10,000 without even an overnight stay!!!

I can't recall a time that I didn't have a 30 min wait to see the doctor for a non-emergency, and this is with a ~$700/month health insurance premium (I only paid $130/month and the rest was subsidized by work). The one other time I went to the ER was a 4 hr wait.

I think the socialists have it pretty good!

Oh no, I wasn't complaining about the wait! In fact, I was more making a point that I didn't even have time to mess up the cushions on the chairs but was charged a ridiculous amount of money. I'm used to waiting hours to get into the doctor's office. My favorite is having an appointment and having to wait an hour and a half past my appointment time to see an orthopedic specialist. It's not like he has emergencies come in...

🙄 well not all of us have a mommy to flash an insurance card for us. Put me in the camp that'd rather wait a little longer and NOT have to deal with private insurer bull.
