RANT HERE thread

So sorry to hear! Rest in peace little buddy.
I had a betta develop dropsy once. I think he went on for 3 months with the condition. I suddenly left my dorm room due to stress and left him with a friend for two weeks with specific instructions. Her daughter convinced her she was not feeding him enough so when I got him back, his tank was moldy, polluted and he had dropsy. Unfortunately, dropsy is one of those things you cannot cure.
In an odd way, you are making me miss keeping bettas. It sucks when they get sick, but they are so fun to have around. I miss the little wiggle dance they do when they know you are going to feed them.

Dropsy can actually be cured, depending on what is causing it. Basically it means something is wrong with the heart, liver, or kidney, causing ascites/effusions. If it is, say, a bacterial infection, correct Abx treatments may relieve the symptoms and the fish will be fine, assuming the damage is not so bad that simple fibrosis won't interfere with organ function. However, if the fish is very old or the infection is overwhelming (Mycobacteriosis, Aeromonas etc and the real baddies), the organ damage may be too much and yes, it can't be cured.

I managed my betta's dropsy for months doing belly taps, and he did wonderfully until I had to euthanize him (he had a large internal tumor that we suspect arose from the kidney based on histology; it had taken up his whole coelom and he stopped eating).

OMG the wiggle dance!!! My little female does it ALL the time. She also chases laser pointers around the tank. I wish my fat ass cat did.

I AM GETTING SO SICK OF EATING SOFT FOOD AFTER GETTING MY WISDOM TEETH OUT! if i have to eat more soup mashed potatoes or mac and cheese i'm going to kill someone...
i just want pita chips and hummus! and fries! and crunchy salty things!

Finals Finals Finals. Go.

Then immediately back to quadruple full time at work.

Apparently, mentioning to my boss that I was 'available' to work over break indicated that I wanted to be scheduled to work 9 days a week, including christmas eve, new years eve and the afternoon of, about 45 minutes after, my last exam.

Nothing like a relaxing vacation to decompress and prepare for future academic success.

I learned something new today. The fish geeks on the interweb seem to think that dropsy is a death sentence. Personally, I had no luck with treating it and could not find anyone who has (until now). I guess the big issue is finding out what is causing it and finding the correct meds to treat it. How did you manage to do belly taps on a betta (and what are belly taps?)

yeah... that's what tends to happen with any kind of _____ geeks on the interwebs. You should see some of the dog/horse crap out there.

And let's end this one right here... soliciting medical advice on sdn is no good. Even for fish. Please seek a fishy vet.

Warm? I wore three jackets this weekend and was still freezing. And I heard the same about the weather in Florida (Pensacola), where my old barn went to a horse show. Maybe it's warmer compared to other states, but still really cold. It's the wind that sucks so much. 🙁

You're in GA, right? What's considered "cold" there? 🙂

I guess it depends on what you are used to. It was around 30 with a nasty wind all day. It got a little warmer sometimes during the day, but the wind never really stopped. That was at the show this weekend.

In Athens though, we sometimes still wear only t-shirts outside. I never thought 90 minutes driving would change the weather so much. lol

That's colder than I expected you to say! It's even colder than MO, which is 41 right now. 🙂

I don't know why, but it only seems to get that cold at horse shows. I'm fine every other time, but as soon as I go to a show, it gets freezing cold. It's terrible.

I've lived in the south my whole life. Virginia and Georgia are HEAVEN compared to Michigan.

Bahh, I meant to say warmer here (obviously). But 30 isn't that bad. 😉 One year they cancelled school for me because with windchill, it was -30F outside and they didn't want anyone to walk outside.

But then again, Wisconsin considers Missouri to be "The South". Lololololololol.

I'm going to Germany on Thursday, so we'll see how it is there. Although I don't mind the cold there as much, because at least there usually is snow. Cold without snow is pointless to me. But I looovveee snow, so then I don't mind it.

:annoyed: second rant of the day...
i watched several hours of desperate housewives reruns this morning instead of studying for my physics final tomorrow. which i am starting to study for...now.

sigh. all my good study habits have gone to crap since i graduated in may 🙁

Exactly. And since there are almost no meds that are consistent in ornamental fish (let alone good diagnostics) dropsy in practice is usually almost always fatal. I more meant that in theory, it is not/should not be.

Sorry, belly tap = abdominocentesis. Or in a fish, I guess it is a coelomocentesis

Question. How do you belly tap a fish? Like, "Hey little guy, hold still..." ?

this stuff saved me after i got my wisdom teeth out because i was STARVING all the time and simply could not consume enough soft foods to satisfy my hunger! it was awesome because it could be shredded into tiny pieces that then basically melted in your mouth!

IV catheter, propofol, gill tubes and Isoflurane.

DUH.

Don't forget to lube the eyes. Also, courtesy nail trim while they're out.

My uncle had a heart attack. He's 52. 🙁 He's diabetic and has a lot of the same health problems my aunt had. She died when she was 55. 🙁

I'm SO sorry to hear that. Keep your head up!

For those of you who have finished- jealous. For those of you who haven't- anyone else finding it difficult to focus on studying when all you can think is VET SCHOOL

Strange, I think I'm having the opposite problem - I'd like to think of anything BUT vet school. Alas...

 Yes, I was thinking about things like... sleeping, christmas, cheese, beaches, not living in the same building 12 hours a day...

now now kids, yall remember just a year ago when you were in the same position 😉

haha yeah. I attempted to find this one particular post by TT from last year that had exactly that sentiment, but in her sea of 7k+ posts, I was unsuccessful 😉. Funny how a semester of vet school changes your perception on things, ain't it?

I'm like b****ing all the time about how I'm sooooo done with school. But I bet first year out, I'm going to be like "PLEEEEEASE lemme back in!!! I don't want to worry about my loan payments, and I don't want to kill this dooooooggggg! Someone tell me what to dooooooooo, or at least gimme differentials in a multiple choice format!!!"

I'd help, but I don't remember it. :d

I hope everyone realizes (at some base level)... that you *will* have a lot to bitch about. Cuz you will.

It's good to remember the crazy dance I did when I got that fat little envelope with the sticker on it and thought, "they wouldn't waste stickers on rejects!" but my brain is still melting from a semester's worth of cumulative histology. It is what it is.

any other suggestions to fill me up?

hahaha that stuff is the best! it was a really tough 2 weeks for me because i wasn't painful at all! my best advice is to find anything loaded with protein to help you stay full (thus that melt in your mouth beef stuff is FABULOUS!) and avoid watching TV-they have the most cruel food commercials that will leave you drooling and ready to murder someone 😉

I just have to rant this because if I don't, I may go insane. My roommate is my best friend and I love her but honestly she bothers the heck out of me sometimes. I am a senior, graduating next semester, and if I get into vet school :xf:, no longer need to worry about grades. But I am STILL working my butt off to get a good grade in all my finals.
My roommate called me today to tell me she failed, literally FAILED her psychology 101 exam. She now has 1.5 in this class. So instead of getting to work and studying for the rest of her exams and trying in life...she is screwing around in her room, being loud so I can hear her in our living room. OMG PRIORITIESSSS, and WHY do I have them when nobody else seems to???

....ahaha....hahahahaha...haha...heh. *sob*

Yeah, not like 10% of our 1st year class fails out/drops out or anything... not like we've already lost a few people because of grades... noooo... grades don't matter... :scared:

I think the number is a lot higher in undergrad. I was talking with my friend the other day and we could not think of a single person from her graduating class of 52 who actually got a 4-year degree in 4 years. In fact, majority of the people who bothered going flunked out, dropped out or flunked and switched their major and are now behind. A couple of people earned 2-year community college degrees and our now out in the work force, but it seems like the majority of the people suck at university. It seems like I am surrounded by a ton of people who cheer over at the thought of a C (which is 60s here I believe). I just cannot believe that high school left them that unprepared.

I agree that more people fail out/switch out of undergrad than vet degrees, but its also important to remember that people tend to go into vet degrees with a lot more on the line, and a lot more commitment etc than undergrad. So its really comparing apples to oranges.

My rant: My partner and I are both sick. Its horrible. I spent like, a grand total of 4 hours out of bed today! And my poor partner is still working, so I don't want to complain to him about how bad I feel because i can't imagine what its like for him!!! 🙁

I don't know if how well high school prepared students really makes a difference in this case. College is hard for a lot of people, and not just academically. Going to college is the next step to becoming part of the real world and finding a career. I think a lot of people go into college thinking they want to do something then realizing they don't. So, then, they either do poorly because they don't care about the material and then switch majors, switch majors immediately (both of these first two options usually results in requiring more than 4 years of schooling to graduate with a bachelor's), or dropping out. I would think this would happen around 2nd year or 3rd year since first year is usually general courses.

I'm also not sure why it's a big deal if it takes a person 4 years or 8 years to complete a degree. If they complete it, they complete it. Who cares if they changed their mind and aren't going to graduate at 21 years old? Who cares if some people drop out of school and pursue a career that doesn't require a degree?

In my case, I struggled. I didn't have to study basically at all in high school or earlier (except history because I hated it and it never stuck). However, when I got to a university, I had to figure out how to study and it was difficult to get into the swing of things. I found that a lot of my friends had the same problem. It wasn't that they couldn't do well in the classes, it's just that it took some time to get used to changing how you learn. Some people stuck it out, some people didn't.

I'm sorry for ranting but it really irks me that a lot of people who plan on going to vet school, get into vet school, plan on going to med school, get into med school judge other people for not being exactly the same as them when it comes to drive.

This. There's a huge push for high school students to go to university, regardless if it's the right choice for them. They're 17/18 years old. Most of them have no idea what they really want. I did a year and dropped out because I realized I'd made the wrong choice. My sister did two years and left for the same reason. I obviously went back in a different program, so did my sister. I think people leave undergrad programs, but I don't think all of them fail out or give up entirely.

I also don't see a problem with switching your major. I did it. So I didn't have my entire life figured out at 17. Big deal. 😕

From my understanding, 10% is really, really high for vet schools! Is that really a correct number?

On the subject: I think that high school preparation definitely does play a huge role in people not being set up for success in college. My second high school did absolutely nothing to prepare me for university courses, especially not ones like organic that require long-term study and a really in-depth understanding of material... in high school I often wouldn't even know when I was going to have exams, just showed up for class and did fine. Obviously my study habits have improved, but I really wish there had been some sort of discipline before to ingrain those sort of habits a little deeper.

Most of the students from my school (many of whom were way higher in class rank than me) have done quite entertaining transitions from science/engineering fields to social sciences/arts, completely dropped out, or gone back home to our community college.

An unrelated rant? EVERYTHING on this website looks amazing and I want to cook real food again. But on the same note, I only have five days left in Finland. :C

Cmon, give vet7 a break. Yes, passing matters, but grades don't for a lot of people in vet school. There is a big difference over studying hard to make sure you pass, and obsessing over whether you will get a B or an A.

So no, grades generally don't matter as much as undergrad. That doesn't stop many people from acting like they do.

I did not mean to strike a nerve. Sorry Bearby!
There is a difference between doing badly because you have not developed the study habits/your program does not interest you to still doing badly 4-5 years down the road after switching majors repeatedly. All of the stories I have heard about so-and-so flunking out and so-and-so still doing horribly are due to laziness and drama. From that high school, all I hear are horror stories about people getting wrapped up in drama, flunking out and struggling financially. It hurts to see people with that much potential go through that at that age. I am rather curious... what happened that made 90% of a graduating class end up working at call centers/McDonald's/retail by the time they are 23 years of age? Economics? Family problems? Poor preparation? Drugs/alcohol? Or is 10% really the success rate? It is just sad and I am tired of hearing about it. On the plus side, one of my good friends just started her degree after putting it off for 4 years and is doing AWESOME. I like hearing stories like that. It makes me happy.

I switched high schools to go into the IB program and the number of people who succeeded in a university setting are significantly high. I hardly studied (due to bullying) but I guess being in the IB program helped a little bit with preparing me for university.

Personally, I would have wished that our guidance counselors would have said more than "Get a degree so you can get a good job." They failed to warn me that university is EXPENSIVE and HARD. If they had told me that dropping a course that I was not doing well in would not ruin my entire university career, I think I would be in vet school now rather than replacing the low marks on my application.

I was told (by an interviewer) that the drop-out rate at our vet school is essentially non-existent. Some people get held back a year but everybody graduates in the end. I was told that in a class of 60, it usually fluctuates between 57 and 63 by the time the program is finished.

Mizzou has a higher fail out rate than the average vet school-bear, but I think it's closer to 8%, in reality. I only mention it because we've already had someone drop out (due to grades), and I am aware of a few people who are not in good standing going into finals.

I know this is rarer at other schools, but it's a reality for some people. There have been some curriculum changes so supposedly this is on the decline, but I'm still seeing it in our class, so I guess I can't speak to the root of the problem very well. Most of the people I know have failed a test at one point.

And while blah blah blah grades don't matter in vet school sounds great, I don't think it's very reassuring to the people who bombed our first anatomy exam or are sitting on two D's going into finals week. We are also one of the only schools that let you stay in the curriculum if you get a D in a class, so interpret as you'd like.

Not trying to be overly critical, just offering my own perspective. I also don't mean to imply that Mizzou is a terrible, vicious program that will fail your butt out, but for whatever reason we have more issues with grades.

grrrrargh. I am sooooooo low energy lately. Probably has something to do with the fact that I haven't exercised in about 2-3 months. Wow- I feel like such a lazy-lame-ass!

On the other hand, I think my medication has something to do with it too. Anyone else here on Anti-anxiety/anti-depressants? I take mine for anxiety, so naturally, it has a calming sort of effect, thus explaining the low energy feeling.
But gawwwwd, it sucks so bad 🙁 wish I could feel normal...
