Since there's lots of talk about whether pets do better at home or away from the owner, I honestly think that if we could provide the same standard of medical care in the pet's natural environment, we would see improvement more quickly and in more cases than we do with hospitalized patients. Vets and stafff can be skeptical when owners claim that their pets do better when they're there, but keep in mind that the clinic is a very scary place for these animals, and being in an unusual place, surrounded by people who they don't know and who do "mean" things like take their temperature and give them nasty medicine, makes it less likely that a patient is going to be comfortable and rest/eat/drink like they are supposed to for ideal recovery.
We, as veterinary professionals, sometimes assume that we know best and that what we were taught in school is the end-all be-all, but that's simply not the case.
My parents cat was hospitalized recently for pancreatitis and one of the vets who cared for him upset my mom greatly. The cat was refusing all food and water in the hospital, so IV fluids were continued and a feeding tube was placed. The vet told my mom that they didn't want to send him home until he was eating on his own. My mom said that she didn't think he would ever eat in the hospital because he was so scared and that she would like to take him home, where he's comfortable, and see if he would eat there. If not, she was completely willing to bring him back. The vet then stated that "cats don't have feelings." My mom was VERY upset, so upset that I thought the cat died when I called her to get an update. Turns out, after a couple of additional days in the hospital, the vets let the cat go home even though he still hadn't eaten on his own. Two minutes after entering the house, he was eating.
Moral(s) of this story: be careful what you say to owners because they actually know their pet better than you ever will and don't assume that what you learned in school as the best option is actually always the best option in every case.
