RANT HERE thread

I am speculating, but I am sure this change was at the behest of the schools.
You are under-estimating adcoms if you think they didn't already notice these details in the past....now they are just asking YOU to do the work of separating them, so they don't have to do it manually themselves.

I doubt there will be much of a change, if any, in how a particular application is treated.

I have worked with adcoms, they SCRUTINIZE every app (usually), and you weren't pulling the wool over anyone's eyes (not implying you were trying to - sorry).

I would hope the schools requested it and VMCAS isn't just going rogue, although their answer of "do what you feel is best" and "call the schools" was predictable but not very helpful in answering my questions. Obviously there are rules and, yeah, I don't want to enter into some action that someone may interpret as deceptive.

Last year I was able to list these hours in "Veterinary Experience" with the subdivision of "Research" so the adcoms really didn't have much legwork to do. I can only imagine that they changed from this format to allow students with non-health science related research experience to get some recognition.

Very last shift at my SA clinic... have never been bit... so of COURSE I get bit by a cat right at the knuckle. Just took some antibiotics but thinking of stopping by the hospital on my way home tonight because I can't deal with this **** later if it gets worse. All because the doctor was rushing because we're overflowing w/ hospital patients and our appointments are running about an hour late. :bang:

He doesn't give a **** though because he's leaving for vaca tonight. :annoyed:

He will care though as that is now a worker's comp issue. Definitely, go get taken care of at human hospital. Cat bites can be horrific as I am sure you know.

No excuse for rushing and not caring on his part

Bf and I went to my favorite breakfast place this morning. It's a tiny little hole in the wall with <10 tables, but some genius thought it would be a good idea to bring 30+ students (I suspect they were RAs/Orientation leaders or something similar from the university) to this place all at once. It was absolutely packed and all of them were being extremely rude - trying to jump ahead of the extremely long line to sit with their friends, sitting and talking for upwards of 15 minutes after their meals were finished instead of leaving so the next people in line could sit down, etc.

Worst of all were the five girls who ended up sitting behind us at the largest table in the restaurant. There was a line out the door but these girls flat out refused to order because they were still waiting for two friends. After 20 minutes of waiting and insisting "omg, they're just, like, hungover! They'll, like, be here soon!" the waiter finally told them they had to order or GTFO. They ordered, ate their meals, paid, and left and the friends never showed up. 🙄

At least the food was phenomenal as always. But I most likely won't get to eat there again for a LONG time, and I'm disappointed that my last delicious breakfast was marred by people being jerks. 😡

Haaah, worker's comp. I was planning to go see a doctor and I would use my own health insurance but I'm also not going to lie to the doctor about what happened either... so I know my insurance would send me a letter in a few days to get the workers comp info. I mentioned that to the practice owner and he was completely dumbfounded. He was like "well just say it was your own cat"... Uh no. I'm not going to lie. That's called insurance fraud. and then he goes "well just take clavamox, you'll be fine. I get bit all the time, everyone gets bit and they take clavamox and they're fine." 🙄

Cheap arsehole. But because I didn't feel like sitting in a city ER for the next few hours (Sunday night = dr's offices are closed), I took the clavamox. If it looks nasty in the morning I can go to my normal doctor on my lunch break and get something else.

Ugh. It was just the worst, craziest, sh*ttiest day. Although in some respects I'm glad that's how my last day was because it makes leaving much easier. And it reminds me that it wasn't always roses and kittens at that place. :annoyed:

Ummmm, yeah........no thanks, you cheap farthead! Definitely, all kinds of fraud there! I would suggest going to your md on the morrow and reporting to worker's comp.....he gets no choice. We have had 2 cat bites in the last 2 months and both were sent to urgent treatment right away. Cat bites are far worse than dog bites due to the method of bite and the bacteria in their mouths. How dare he even suggest that you lie (and put your cats at risk)?!?!

You are better off outta there.

Today was just an overall horrible day. I'm so pissed at everyone right now. I never get like this but I guess everyone has a breaking point.

Also the thought of applying to vet school this time next year makes me worry. I don't think I have enough hours, but I don't have enough time during the school year to get a substantial amount of hours. Need to take GRE, lots of prereqs and good grades.

Ugh.

My life in a nutshell.

3rd flat tire in 2 weeks. Starting to think its not a coincident.😡

I want to take a shower and both the power and water aren't working. 😡 😡

Yet the internet works? What the feck!

This is the second hotel recommended by Trip Advisor, had quality awards, etc. that has s*** the bed.

Istanbul is not off to a great start......I'm at the point where I just want to go home. 3 more days.

Edit: and being told to shhhh cause in Turkey, the woman does not speak does not help my mood. Cultural thing or not, it pisses me off. 😡

I had to get 5 new tires over about 6 weeks at the beginning of the year. It was horrible. Kept getting flats from something in the sidewall or right in the curve that couldn't get patched.
Hopefully you aren't having to get new tires each time?

Where I work we've gone through some major changes with the stuff but there are still some issues. One of our assistants is good, but she's cocky and she thinks she knows all the going on in the hospital. She and the practice manager have been clashing recently over personnel issues and she's started bad mouthing everything he does. He left this morning because his wife was having health issues. "Well, he didn't say goodbye to anyone." She has a friend that wants to work here and he told her to have the friend apply to the application like everyone has to. She says he's refusing to hire that friend.

I DON'T CARE ANYMORE IF YOU DON'T LIKE EACH OTHER. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT HERE. YOU ARE BOTH WRONG ABOUT VARIOUS VIEWPOINTS

I am. 😡

Well, not the first one, not sure what was up with that one. Took it off, filled it, no holes, put it back on. It's been fine since.

Second one had a 3 in gash in the sidewall.

This one has a nail in it. I parked it, looked ALL around my car to make sure nothing was there, because I didn't want another flat right away. 🙄 Came out 3 hours later to go to work.

I have a long standing habit of quick looking at all my tires to make sure they aren't flat, every time I drive. (I had problems with previous tires keeping air pressure and had to keep filling couple times a week. I got these new tires less than 3 months ago)

So, I quick looked, no flats. Got in, drove HALF a block, completely flat tire. And the nail is too close to the sidewall to properly fix. 😡

Oh boy. 🙁
I didn't hear about the drama on Saturday until it was outwardly complained about to me. I guess being oblivious to that sort of thing is good sometimes.

My rant. I can't essay right now. It's super frustrating to me becaus I am normally so good at writing. But trying to explain why I want to attend my dream school for my bachelor's degree? Nope. All my brain is thinking is "Well, just because, okay?!" Sigh. I have very good reasons but putting those into an eloquently written 1000 word statement is proving to be very challenging.

I'm really frustrated with my dog's allergies. I'm literally on the verge of tears. It's time to take drastic measures:
if anyone has experience with raw food diets for allergy prone dogs, I welcome your pms. I have my eyes set on an allergy test (my dog most certainly has sensitivities to both food and the environment) but since we just moved the vet recommended we wait a little longer. Until then, I'm going to feed him one of the frozen raw food brands you can't get at the local natural pet store.

I'm willing to spend money, but $15 for a 5 pound chub that will last 3 days will definitely break my bank. Thinking of mixing a grain free kibble with the raw, frozen stuff. Seriously, any advice is welcome. For the record, I've tried a grain free kibble (TOTW) and I wasn't impressed, although he DID look much better then than the "natural, wholesome" brand he's currently on. I also had him on Diamond Naturals at one point, which as far as the natural pet food store owner was concerned is crap, and he itched less on it than when he was on TOTW and Wellness.

Sigh.

👍👍👍 It amazes me how many clients come in touting grain-free diets, only to have to their dogs end up with a beef/other protein allergy..

Today is our last full day at the beach and it has been raining since 2pm. 🙁

Everyone thinks their pug/Chihuahua/maltipoo//whatever should be eating the same diet as a wolf. And apparently wolves don't eat grain, so grains MUST be ebil and the cause of all disease/allergies/problems.

I'm still waiting to see a pack of feral pugs take down wild game.

Talk to your vet about doing a real food trial. Hypoallergenic prescription food. 12 weeks. No treats, bones, rawhides, flavored meds.

I've been through the allergies thing with my first dog. It sucks. Don't waste your time trying out different foods randomly. Most over the counter foods are cross contaminated with other protein sources and you need a full 12 weeks to know if it's truly food allergies.

Your vet can also do skin cytology and medical management (antihistamines, topicals, vitamins, and sometimes steroids). If your vet is not skin savvy seek out one who is. I had to go to a vet dermatologist, turned out my dog had MRSP (similar to MRSA) and was allergic to a host of things including the bacterial infection in his skin.

The person I volunteer with is getting worse. I had a scale that I was using to weigh my ECR's .. she came over and asked EVERY single person in that room if they were using it EXCEPT me. The last thing she said after the last person said no was, "well that's all that matters". Excuse me? I don't matter? WE'RE A TEAM HELPING TO REHABILITATE WILDLIFE. Is she serious? I'm going to sit down with the hospital director because this is not appropriate, its unprofessional and down right wrong. I have not wronged this woman in any way! I haven't touched her stuff I haven't interfered with her duties, I mean I've helped her? She listened in on my conversations then put her two cents in and she's treating ME like crap?

Just spent a good 6 hours cleaning/scrubbing/vacuuming the apartment. I'm pretty sure after the last tenant moved out, the maintenance guys came in, half-ass vacuumed, and called it a day. My bathroom was GROSS.😡 Whoever lived here last (or at least I'm hoping it was the last person...) wore contacts and just threw them behind the toilet area when they were done with them. There was a heap of crunchy lens behind my toilet. Overall, the bathroom was icky so that got Clorox-wiped until I had a headache. My shower faucet constantly drips and my bathtub is at a lower elevation than the drain so it just sits there. Kitchen sink also drinks and then leaks underneath and the wood is ruined under there. Maintenance was supposed to come today to fix it, but :xf: they come tomorrow! Also scrubbed the tile by the door...its a completely different color now. Slightly bitter now that my roommate isn't here to join in the deep-cleaning "fun." She's not fully moving in for two more weeks.

Overall, I'm still glad I picked this place, I'm just in a post cleaning slump...Better now than waiting til classes start I suppose. When I first walked in, my place was still cleaner/in better shape than some of the demos I saw at other apartment complexes! Seriously, who doesn't clean up their demos?

2nd rant: Went shopping this morning for cleaning supplies and stuff I needed for my apartment. Card got declined and had to pay cash even though there was plenty of money on my card. Called the bank and they shut it off temporarily because I had a lot of transactions in a new city...I guess better safe than sorry but I could do without the hassle and embarrassment.

Went to dinner tonight with SO and friends. Ended up losing my cool and storming out. 🙁

A close friend of SO and I were talking about moving to north FL and he started drilling me on why I wanted to go to that school and how much of a risk it is for SO and I to move up there...

this is the same friend who I sought advice from when I found out SO's father was unsupportive and thought I was ruining SO's life with the move.

Drilling ME on how much of a risk it is? NO S###!!! 😡

I have planned for months and months about the budget and the logistics of it. I got to the point where I cannot plan anymore.

and then I hear "well it sounds like you just want to move there because you want a change of scenery."

Seriously? Yes, I am uprooting my entire family and moving them halfway across the state because I selfishly want a change of scenery. 😡

Beyond upset.

I don't want to be a debbie downer ... but keep an eye out for bed bugs. I know I know its disgusting but they're all over Columbus .. I just lived in a place that has them (I swell like a balloon!) and OSU just had to evacuate one of their dorms this past fall cause it was really bad. If you find you're getting bitten, find the bed bug addendum in your contract and see if you have to pay (which costs a lot) but they're disgusting and they're everywhere. Dont want to scare you! I just want you to be aware. Im currently living with zero pieces of furniture. At least the carpet is comfy in the new place?

Ugh! No! It';s not their life! I would have lost my cool too. Since when do people feel the need to act like that and dictate other peoples lives to them. Its one of my peeves and I shut people out of my life sooooo fast who pull that crap.:hello:

This is why I refuse to rent from huge apartment complexes anymore. Gross!

Background Story: My great aunt (my grandma's sister) moved to live with my grandma about 7 years ago or so. She was living there for free for a good 5 years and my grandma went out of her way to get her approved for a car and get her a car and help her find a job. Anyway, about 2 years ago my grandma asked her to start paying rent, because my grandma has dementia and she was forced to retire. My great aunt is not paying a lot of rent ($600) for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with office and all utilites that she is sharing with my grandma.

The rant part:

My grandma is getting sicker and my great aunt who lives with her is complaining that no one else in the family will help out. So my family agrees to help because they did not realize that my great aunt was having a difficult time, no big deal, it isn't easy to deal with someone who has dementia. But my great aunt is using the rest of my family now. I mean, she is being passive aggressive and outright mean. My mom has gone over to their house everyday for a few weeks and helped my grandma. She set up PT and OT appointments, helped her pay bills, etc, etc. They have it set up so that someone is going over there every day while my aunt is at work (from 9-5) to help out my grandma. My great aunt is saying though that they aren't helping and that they should be cleaning for them and cooking for them as well. My mom and other aunt were there on a weekend and basically did my grandma's AND great aunt's laundry, they scrubbed my great aunt's bathroom and when my mom was in there cleaning my great aunt was in the way of her cleaning the mirror my mom said, "could you please move to the side or use this to wipe off that side of the mirror," my great aunt tells her, "No, I hate cleaning and I am lazy, I don't like doing it, you can do it, you need to be helping me." My great aunt is complaining that she is "too tired" after working 9-5 to cook for herself or to clean on weekends. This is BS, she is a grown adult... she is in her late 50's and this is just basic crap she should be doing to care for herself. My mom and aunt do not mind helping out with my grandma, but my great aunt is going overboard by having them clean and do other crap for her, it is ridiculous. So they told her this past weekend they weren't doing the cleaning and stuff for her and my great aunt lost it... cursing out my dad, mom, two other aunts and saying "no one cares to help her and everyone is f*ckin lazy" and that "my mom don't do ****" and that "my mom should do everything because she doesn't work." It drives me nuts. That is no way to treat family. She is nearly 60 years old, she can clean and cook for herself, I mean if my grandma weren't in the picture (which sad, but will happen at some point) no one is going to go over and cook and clean for her then. Just... :boom:

Shortened version: My great aunt is taking advantage of the rest of my family and it is pissing me off.

I'll look out for them but I haven't seen any sort of bugs yet and no bite marks. I'm pretty sure my landlord pays for that stuff, but I'm not to worried at this point.

Yeah, not much worse than what I got with the dorms the last 4 years but I'm sure as soon as I move into a really clean place, I'll never look back!

I've screwed myself by living in a fairly decent apartment last year. It set some pretty high standards, even though my landlords were kind of lousy. Now I have this awesome house this year with appliances and things that I will never be able to afford. Surprisingly, rent isn't horrible. However, now I have standards and don't want to live in anything resembling a college apartment again. I went up with my sister to see her house for school in Syracuse and she's super excited about it and I'm like "Errrr....you're going to live here???"

If I've already tried a prescription diet should I try again with a different brand? I was using Hill's when he was 4-8 months and that's when it all started.

How do turkey and lamb rank on the allergy frequency scale?

As far as the layout, space, appliances, and freedom go, this is a pretty big upgrade from UG. My first three years of UG I lived in a freshman dorm with a shared floor bathroom (1 year as a freshie, and 2 years as a freshman RA) and my sr year I finally got in a "Sophomore/Junior" dorm as an RA with a bathroom in my room. They were both pretty old buildings that were falling apart and I've never had more than 1 room besides my bathroom my last year and definitely no kitchen - so I'm pretty excited overall still! I'll probably be over the dirty issue by tomorrow since it's all clean now. 😀 I'm going to try to stay here as long as I can so I don't have to move my crap again and I don't want to pay any more. I already told my roomie I've fine with still living here after I'm married because my SO will still be working 6 hours away anyway...

Did you use z/d or one of the d/d formulas? Most food trials start with z/d because it uses a hydrolyzed protein that tends to fly under the radar of the immune system. Again, like others have mentioned, absolutely nothing else by mouth other than the z/d.

If this started at 4 months though, I would be kinda suspicious that this may be more than just food allergies. I agree with the recommendations to go see a dermatologist. I'm sorry, skin issues really blow 🙁. My cat has food allergies, but they didn't show up till he was 4 years old. He gets eosinophilic granulomas on his paw pads or in his lip when he has a flare up. He's done best with the IVD (used to be royal canin) rabbit formula.

Again, I'm sorry your pup is having these issues 🙁

I live in a house with a driveway and a garage and a dishwasher and a fenced back yard. I'm terrified of having to move to a city and not being able to afford anything but a flat with street parking. Only the best for my Sebastian. (Is that my car's name? I'm still trying to decide.)

How do turkey and lamb rank on the allergy frequency scale?

Which prescription diet? We're you on it for at least 8 weeks with nothing else? That includes chewable hw prevention in some cases. Are you on appropriate flea prevention? There are other diets than hills and I'm not sure why you think a raw diet would fix any skin issues. Not all hills diets are prescription, also. If I had a new client that had a dog with skin issues, this is what I would do.

Start the pet on good flea prevention, anti histamines, and antibiotics if needed. If no improvement on 2 week recheck, start a food trial and check again for fleas. I prefer royal canin rabbit and potato but that's getting hard to find. Iams has a kangaroo and oats diet, too that is awesome for this. That diet must be continued for at least 8 weeks with no treats. I do 2 week rechecks to see how everything is going. If no improvement, probably atopic dermatitis and it still won't be a grain issue. I then recommend skin testing but they have to be off meds for that. It's very uncommon for atopy to start before 2 years of age. If the owner won't do skin testing, we talk about atopica or pred if the itchiness is seasonal. We also talk about fish oils in the diet and making sure we aren't over bathing the pet. If they want to come off the prescription diet, we talk about good options for maintenance foods.

When I came to the city here, I started paying for a garage.. then said screw that and started parking on the street. You wanna know the difference? Not much. Garages are overrated unless it is for your garage band, or a place to banish the husband when he is getting in your hair.

Dishwasher I cannot live without (MrsSOV had no dishwasher in her apartment last year, and started eating off of paper plates:laugh:). Washer/Dryer even more so.

You might as well get used to this one. It is a part of modern life. No reason for embarrassment, it happens ALL the time.

I just know when my card is declined to whip out my cell phone, call customer service (# in on back of every card), and then hand the card back (if I don't want to use another card). It should not be a source of stress for you in the future. Any change in spending patterns can trigger this... increased # of purchases, change in type of stores, change in size of purchases, change in location, use of internet or brick and mortar stores, etc.

Duurrrrr, sorry: I swear I know the difference between Hill's prescription and Hill's science, my brain was just off last night. So no, I didn't have him on z/d or anything like that. My bad.

As for the other stuff, I do in fact have my bases covered. I've always had him on flea prevention. He was on antibiotics after a yeast infection but the itching persisted at that point. For a while I would give him Benadryl daily. Now it's just as needed. (On that note, ill just say that he does have a history of pyoderma and then once even had a hives outbreak on his face for which we had to get a steroid injection--no idea what triggered it, he had been in the house and hadn't eaten anything new. I believe we're also dealing with alopecia. The fur on his limbs and tummy is thin. Between his toes always appears pink and inflamed, too. Most if not all of these can be symptoms of food allergies.)

I'm totally willing to go with and stick to a food trial. I will be living alone until school starts, so monitoring his food intake should be no problem.

I called my vet school a few months ago and they referred me to a veterinary dermatologist. She's the one who recommended I wait a few weeks before pursuing any kind of allergy test.

Now dyachei, you've given all of this great guidance, so my question is can I do a trial "on my own?" How much should I involve a veterinarian with rechecks? Of course I do have a copy my dog's file from my old vet, but obviously no one in my new town knows him as well as our old vet. Or would I be wasting my time if I didn't just go straight to the dermatologist (she's an hour away though)? I'm definitely willing to try the foods you recommended, but what about Natural Balance's LID duck and potato? I saw it on sale yesterday hehe.

Thanks everyone. I probably sound really stupid, frantic and needy. I'm just out of patience and tired of not knowing what's going on.

My doctor doesn't like the way my bite wound is looking so he's sending me to see a hand specialist at the hospital. Blergh. I'm glad he's on top of this but this is just about the last thing I feel like dealing with 5 days before I move out of the city. 🙁

No OTC diet is good enough. Not a single one. Cross contamination makes them a crap shoot.

You can monitor at home. But I still recommend talking with a vet

Well, I guess I'm used to living in a state with hail storms in the spring, so in that case, garages are super important (or at least a car port).

Even so - I don't scrape for ice in the morning when I need to drive somewhere. I don't have to get wet if it's raining until I at least get to my destination. No one can sideswipe or door ding my car except for my own husband, which is unlikely at best. And... no one can steal my car or anything out of it without breaking into my house first.

That's why I like having a garage. I could park in the driveway and be relatively assured that no one would break into it here, but in a big city? I dunno.

I'd rather have a garage than a dishwasher.

When does school start for you? I know Hills, Purina, and IVD/royal Canin (new this year at Tennessee) offer discounts to students for their prescription diets. Also, you will need a prescription from a vet to start one of the prescription diets, is there a community clinic at your school for staff and students? You may be best served by going to the clinic at your school if you have one, or a clinic in the area (maybe recommended by current students?) and get a second opinion since you have all his old records. Then you can talk to the vet about a food trial and/or referral to the dermatologist. It will probably be easier to go ahead and do this sooner rather than later cause when school starts, you'll be doubly stressed out.

Trust me, you do not sound stupid, frantic, or needy. This is a very frustrating situation and I know first hand how stressed you can get when there aren't any easy answers. My cat with the food allergies has also developed chronic sinusitis and basically lives with a constant upper respiratory infection involving lovely yellow purulent discharge coming out of his nose and usually sticking to my walls and windows. I've done cultures, nasal flushes, antibiotics (clavamox, zenequin, and azithromycin) and nothing really seems to help (well, the nasal flushes are a miracle cure for about 3 days, then it's back to status quo). I've decided to go ahead and pursue a full work up with MRI once I get to school, even though it'll break the bank. It's just really hard when you see them suffering (even though my cat still has great quality of life as I'm sure your puppy does) and there's not much you can do for them.

Edit: Are you signed up for VIN yet? I'd also go search the message boards on VIN and see if you can find cases similar to yours and see what the responses say. I've been doing that with the chronic sinusitis and it makes me feel better to be as educated as possible.

Fair points some of them. (hail especially, and scraping ice).
I would disagree with
1) Dings.. They happen. Get used to it. 😛
2) Stolen cars.. They don't happen THAT much. 😛😛
3) Use an umbrella. 😛😛😛

I don't have a dishwasher.

I do have a washer/dryer, but they are the same machine so it takes around 3 hours to dry one load of laundry and you can't start washing the next load until the first load is dry, because it is the same machine. Most places here don't have dryers though, so I consider myself lucky in that aspect. 🙂
