Well, today was all around just loads of fun. I have an infection going on so I'm taking doxycycline and metranidazole twice a day. I took both of them this morning and about an hour later I was yacking up the contents of my stomach for the first time in 6 years. Did I go home? Nope because I can't afford to take any more time off work so I spent my day trying not to hurl all the while fighting off dizzy spells and headaches. Then, I got passive aggressive attitude because I called attention to the kitten we had staying for surgery having really gunky (technical I know) ears and asked if she wanted to put some of it on a slide. Her response was "yea just put it over there because apparently I'm the only who can do it" in an annoyed tone of voice. Um, I'm sorry? Was I not supposed to tell you the kitten's ears looked horrible and ask if you wanted to see if it had mites? And guess what, it did. Afternoon rolls along, and my stomach tries to revolt against what little lunch I ate so I go to fold towels because it's a simple job that doesn't require a lot of moving. I then get yelled at for folding towels because there's so much cleaning to do (which is true) and my coworker was just standing around because it's totally my fault that he can't keep himself busy 🙄. I tell her I've been nauseous all day and she tells me she doesn't care and I should find a simple cleaning task to do. What do you think I was doing?! UGH!!! Now I'm playing "which medication makes me sick" and hoping I figure it out so I can tell my doctor I'm not taking it anymore because F that nonsense. So done with all of it.
Sorry that sucks 🙁
Doxy always kills my stomach unless I take it with food, but even then no promises.
Now that my finger is under control, as I was leaving for work this morning one of my cats, Shirley, peed on my bed. And my husband made a good point that she has been less active recently (although I thought that was just due to the heat). The last time she peed on our bed was because she wasn't feeling well - took her to my clinic and surprise! Pyothorax. So now I'm moving in 4 days and freaking out that the pyothorax is back. Last time we drained as much as we could (but didn't flush it) and put her on Baytril for 6 weeks. She had two re-checks and her chest looked pretty good both times. If it's back though, it probably means putting in a chest tube and a 5+ days hospital stay... right when I'm moving away from the clinic where I pay for stuff at cost. FML. 🙁
My husband is taking her over to the clinic later today so this rant is premature but I just needed to get that out....

🙁 i hope your kitty feels better! are you flying the pets up or driving?
Well, good news is I didn't vomit again last night, but that also mean I have no idea which medication made me sick or if it was just taking them both at the same time that did it. I do know that the doxy makes my stomach hurt when I try to eat. Ginger ale is going to become my friend. I hate being so sensitive to medications. Any advice on how to make this a less crappy 9 days? I've never taken either one of these medications before.Sorry that sucks 🙁

I was on doxy for an extended period of time, many months. The pharmacist said it was a tradeoff, food in the stomach can reduce effective absorption of the meds, but can help with nausea and stomach pain. I just couldn't handle it with an empty stomach. I would eat and then take the pill shortly after the meal and usually wouldn't have problems doing it that way.
And don't take it with anything citrusy like orange juice or lemonade.
I'm lactose intolerant so that one's easy lol. Thanks guys I really appreciate it.Or dairy products.
I'm sorry Jam. I hope Mojo can come home soon and your bill stops climbing. I would sit down with your boyfriend and calmly explain that you're stressed by your own health issues and Mojo's and ask that he hold off on getting a new gaming console until more necessary bills are paid off. That's the least he can do to help with this situation. I hope both you and Mojo feel better soon!My rants:
1. Mojo's bill is at $2600 and rising, as he gets a weekly chemistry panel and a urinalysis weekly. I just don't have that kind of money. I'm hoping the vaccine company will help pay, but I'm not banking on it.
2. The boyfriend and I have gotten into little arguments about money recently, stemming from Mojo's hospital stay... Yet he is buying a new gaming system. I haven't asked him to pay for Mojo's stuff at all. Ugh.
3. Had an MRI yesterday for my back because I was having sciatic pain and foot numbness. It turns out I have some bulging discs and they are referring me to a spinal surgeon.

Thank you! 😳 We're driving... it will be at least a 5 hour drive from NYC. I know I'm freaking out prematurely but it's hard not too when there a zillion other things going on at the same time/I'm already stressed about moving. Are you in Ithaca already or moving soon?

No OTC diet is good enough. Not a single one. Cross contamination makes them a crap shoot.
You can monitor at home. But I still recommend talking with a vet

Taking a pet, sick or healthy, on a trip is way easier in a car than a plane, so that's good. I won't be in Ithaca until the 14th...going on a trip with the SO. Which brings me to a rant: PACKING IS THE WORST. For anything and everything. Especially when the cat keeps jumping into everything. I fully expect to land in Italy and find her in my suitcase, or drive up to Ithaca and find her in the box labeled 'kitchenware.' 😡

Im out of the loop. What's wrong with your dog? 🙁
Oops, sorry... I forget I'm not friends with all of you on the Facebook! ( 🙁 )
Mojo was in the ICU at school from last Tuesday until Friday. He tested positive for leptospirosis, serovar Grippotyphosa, for which he was vaccinated for multiple times, most recently May 2013.
He is home now, but I have to give daily subcutaneous fluids and weekly lab work because of persistent azotemia.

Oh my goodness. I am fairly certain my lab mix had lepto in april.
I can sympathize with you on the vet bills. I am so sorry. 🙁
I decided not to do the test because of the cost. It was never confirmed but her symptoms and lab work were indicative of it. She was UTD too.
What does/did his platelets and WBC look like?
I trust that youve been in contact with the vaccine company?
I'm so very sorry about your pup's troubles. I hope he starts feeling better soon and that he has a speedy recovery. 🙂 I'm just curious, though...do you know the manufacturer of the vaccine? I can't imagine that the manufacturer wouldn't assist with any medical costs since it sounds like a product failure. I know, as I'm sure you do too, that Zoetis will (should) cover up to $5,000 in diagnostics/treatment costs for any of their vaccines. Can't speak for other companies, but surely there's a similar policy. :\
Either way, sending positive thoughts your way. 🙂
Platelets and WBC were normal. The head of the small animal department is helping me file a case with the vaccine company in hopes they will pay for it.
To you and your pup!Thank you! Unfortunately, it wasn't a Pfizer/Zoetis vaccine. The vaccine was a Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica.
Only concern I have is that the lepto vaccines (in my understanding) are intended to make the disease less severe, not necessarily prevent it from happening. But they may still cover you since you had the appropriate tests done. Certainly worth trying. Good luck!
I have a similar (kind of..) issue but it's with general chemistry. My school just switched to doing one semester of gen chem the year I started (for some unknown reason...) but I need two for vet school. My instate is having me take a random semester of general chem somewhere else (so next summer I have to give up a lot of time to take gen chem at a community college since summer classes are usually 5 days a week and a lot of hours at our cc) and I don't even know what semester I'm going to take since my gem chem class mostly covered everything that's covered in two semesters (which was why it was 1.5 hours a day 5 days a week) but left a few random things out that don't all fall into gen chem 1 or 2 at the cc. Not really the same situation but still difficult pre-req to fulfill and frustrating! You could maybe try an online class? It'd be equal to a full semester but it would probably cover it! Biochem will be harder to find classes for outside your school since you can't usually take it at a ccNot really a rant, but I e-mailed Oregon State yesterday about their pre-req biochem requirement (namely, you need two biochems if you attend a quarter school). My university does not have a sequence of biochem courses. There is just "Introductory Biochemistry" which lasted ten weeks and covered a whole textbook. It was essentially a 15 week semester course squeezed into a quarter (as many classes were on OSU's quarter system). To get more biochem, I would have had to find graduate level courses in other areas like nutrition, food science, meat science, etc. Subject areas that require lots of departmental pre-req's that an Animal Science undergrad would not have and a Public Health graduate would also not have.
I just thought that was strange. I could be wrong, but they're the only school that explicitly states that you need two quarters of biochem.
